Title: Swimming With Hair Loose Post by La Diosa on Jun 14th, 2008 at 12:31am
I haven't gone swimming yet this year, but I saw bluberri's thread about asking about swim caps however, I've never been fond of them.
Typically, I'll put my hair in a bun or something, but it usually comes undone during my swim and I actually love the way that my loose hair feels as I'm swimming. So I'm wondering, is there a way to swim with loose hair that isn't damaging? |

No. Swimming with hair loose = hair suicide. :P
It might look romantic underwater, but it's actually tangling hopelessly with every move you make. I don't believe in swim caps either since rubber breaks hair. But I absolutely braid my hair before swimming. |

It does and it feels great too... but, I'll keep it contained. The last thing that I want to do is damage my hair. Thanks Angel. :D |

My daughter and I have discussed that when we swim her hair flows like a river behind her, while mine floats like a cloud around me. I think it illustrates how my hair is fine while hers is coarser.
I confess to sometimes swimming with it loose. If I braid it before wetting, I'm always worried that some part of the braid won't get wet and absorb the chlorine instead. I hate the way the cold water feels on my back when wetting it, so I usually bend forward, which tangles the loose hair enough it becomes difficult to braid. So I swim with it loose and then use lots of detangler and conditioner to unsnarl it before washing. Unless I'm swimming in the ocean. Then I blop on lots of conditioner and braid it. |

My hair floats around me as well...I think. :-?
Although, when I'm in the ocean, I try not to get my hair wet at all. Getting sand out of my hair is no picnic. |

That's why you rinse off in one of the showers at the beach afterwards. Then take a shower when you get home. We SoCalians know the drill. ;) |

I don't even know if that would work for me. My hair kinks up a bit when it's wet so the sand doesn't just slip out. The only thing that seems to work for me is keeping my hair as dry as possible to avoid sand in my hair at all costs.

Apply conditioner first. Uhm...I don't actually remember if the advice is to rinse out the conditioner first but I assume so. It still seals the hair somewhat so that your hair doesn't soak up all the chlorine or salt water. I don't know if it actually works. I forgot to test it last summer, the only time in ages when I went swimming.
