I like to ride my bicycle alot and ALWAYS wear a helmet.  I used to pull my ponytale through the opening in the back of the helmet but found that it was damaging my hair.  This past summer I rode with my hair in braids most of the time.  As you can see from my photo, I found that tucking the braids up into the vents allowed me to keep the braids off my neck and back.

Does anyone else have any suggestions for handling long hair with helmets? ???

I´m a passionate horsewoman and have to stow away my hair somewhere when I put on my helmet. Sometimes I wear a braid which I pull into my shirt for not running the risk of getting caught by a tree. I like a bun as well but made the experience that if your hair is very long or thick the bun will come into conflict with the helmet. Third possibility and usual in riding is using a hairnet to handle your hair.

Hmmm...I dunno about bicycle helmets.  

For motorcycle helmets, when my hair was a bit shorter, I wore a slightly too-large helmet, and piled it all up in the helmet  ;D

A friend sent me a "hair glove" a couple  years back for my birthday - it's a sleeve thingy that wraps around a low pony tail, and has a little hook to hook onto the ponytail holder.  I originally was given a short one (4") but now I need longer ones to be of much use.   :D

I have too much hair to put up into the helmet - bike helmets must fit snug or they are useless.  I have seen the hairgloves, but never tried one.  I hate to spend a lot of money and then find it does not work.

I have thought about putting my hair in a single braid and then wrapping the braid or putting it in a pantyhose leg and attaching it with a pretty bow.  Guess I'll just have to be creative about this.

I think it is great the way you wrap the braids around the outside of the helment.  Extra protection for yor head.   :)

Is there a sunscrean that you can put on your hair so it won't get damaged?  

I try to keep my hair covered when I'm out in the summer sun, but many times I'd love to have it down.

If I am going to be out all day (such as when I do week long bike rides), I will use a little aloe gel on my hair.  It helps hold it in place and acts as a sun screen.  (If you want to try this, be sure it is 100% aloe gel, some aloe has alcohol in it which will dry your hair - a definite no-no).  

I am always trying to figure out better ways to deal with my hair while biking, so any suggestions are always appreciated.

I was surfing the net the other night looking for hairstyle's for the 40's for me to wear to my son's wedding (he is wearing a zoot suit  ::) ) and I found snoods were quite popular with that time.  While searching for snoods I found many of them in with clothing and accessories for horse riders.  They usually had a bow with a small snood that attached to it.  Not being a horseback rider, I have not seen anyone wear one with a helmet.  Can anyone direct my to a site that would show a person wearing the snood with the helmet.  [and just to clarify, I am NOT going to wear my bike helmet to the wedding  ;D ]

I don´t know what a snood is (foreigner  ;) ) but I guess it is what I called a hairnet? You need not to wear a bow because a lot of them can be fixed on your hair. The bow is worn as an assecoire for dressage. For military or jumping there are hairnets which are fixed on the head and then supported by the helmet.

Yes, a snood is a type of hairnet.  Obviously I am not familiar with the protocols of hair and horseback riding.   ;D  I guess I will have to do some searching in that area as well!  Thanks.

During the summer I wear hats often to protect my hair and face from the sun...to keep my hair off my neck I use a snood...I found this great web site that sells plain and beaded (for the wedding) snoods.

i love 2 ride my bike and find my hair stays back and is not damaged when put my hair in a loose ponytail down my back and roll it up into a shower cap, i just slip on my helmet and ride. I even ride with a conditioning treatment in. ;)

Thanks for your suggestion, however I can't get my hair up into my helmet - too long.  I can't leave it in a pony tail because of the type of bike I ride.  I have found that putting it in braids, then putting a little cap over my hair helps protect it from the helmet harness.
