Title: Sleeping with curly hair..
Post by Ranlayla on Jul 24th, 2003 at 1:29am
I have almost waist length curly hair.  So curly that is in ringlets most of the time..hehe.  I was wondering what was the best way to sleep on it?  I've tired braiding but my hair gets frizzy and its too long to sleep without anything done to it, it gets in the way.  So if anyone has any suggestions as to what they do with their hair, I would be so greatful.. :)
Thanks-Manda

Hi-Iīm not a curly head-in fact very straight :),so I donīt know if this will be of help:If braiding doesnīt work, how about a sleeping cap?Made of silk or satin maybe? That should take care of the tangles!

You might want to try sleeping with your hair over the end of the bed, if it's long enough to do that and you don't have a headboard.

Or how about rolling your hair around a heavy cotton sock or two?  Although I don't have curly hair, I find this is a good way to "control" my hair at night and it doesn't put tight waves or curls into my hair.

Hi thanks for all the ideas.  I could'nt put my hair over the bed because I sleep on my stomach.  I had thought about wearing a satin cap, Ill have to try it.  Bikerbraid, I found your idea interesting but I dont know how to do what you are talking about.
Thanks

My "sock curls": I find that a heavy cotton sock works best - crew or tube length.  I can roll my waist length hair on a crew sock, but if you have thick hair, a tube sock could be easier.  You roll the ends of your hair around the sock, then rolling under like with a regular roller, roll your hair onto the sock.  When you reach your scalp, take the ends of the sock and gently tie.  This will put you hair in a type of bun with the ends of the sock sticking out of the top.  (Remember to roll the hair under or the bun will get sloppy and fall out).

You can use one sock at the back of the head, or two - one on each side.  If you want to increase the curls, use even more socks.

Give this a try and see how it works!

Hi -

These are all great suggestions that I'm going to keep in mind for when my hair is long enough to wear up at night *wistful sigh* Do any of you have advice for how to sleep with curly hair which is still quite short? I have to rinse my hair every day because sleeping on it turns it into non-curly, enormous '80s hair. Since I always try to air-dry it, it's a real pain waiting for it to dry so I can go out.

Well, I still have to rinse my hair just about every day, although sometimes I won't bother if I'm just wearing my hair in a ponytail.

Even when I can wear my hair up to bed, it's going to ruin my curls - at least the ones that I am lying directly on. Isn't there a quick morning fix for rejuvenating curls? Or a way to wear hair to bed which won't result in flat, straight, frizzy hair around my face? I've thought about damp braiding, but then I have to sleep on a towel so my pillow doesn't get wet, and I don't like the way that feels. Any other suggestions?

The closest experience I have with curly hair goes back to when I had a curly perm about 25 years ago!  I would use a spray bottle to dampen my hair each day which would rejuvenate the curls after sleeping on them.

Thanks Bikerbraid, I'll give it a try. I have to wet my hair quite a lot to get the curls to come back (rather than just frizzing the top layer). Maybe I can work on a technique ;-)
