hello......i had naturally brown hair.  Last June i died it a "wash out" black.  But it never all washed out, just some and it grew out about 3 inches.  Yesterday i tried to die it a "wash out"  brown that looked like my original color.  But it didn't work very well.  It died all the natural brown in my hair a redish-color and it kept all my black there. I have washed it about 10 times since then since the box says it comes out in about 28 washes.  But i really cant wait that long and i want it to come out faster without going out and buying some expensive hair color remover.  Is there any home rememdies to get it out, or do i have to go out and buy some hair color remover? PLEASE HELP ME!  :'(

There are 3 types of hair color:

1. Temporary, like Loving Care, that is supposed to last about 2 weeks
2. Semi-permanent, which uses permanent dyes to cover your natural color, and
3. Permanent, which bleaches your hair slightly in order to make the dye stay better.

The first type is normally considered "wash-out".  Semi-permanent color usually lasts at least a couple of months, depending on how often you wash. Basically, it is intended to last at least til the roots get intolerable and you're going to color again anyway.

How permanent is it, really? That depends entirely on your hair type. When you used a semi-permanent dye to color your hair black, and it didn't ever come out, this meant that semi-permanent color is permanent on your hair.

But neither temporary nor semi-permanent can lighten your hair. So after your hair was dyed black, you were basically stuck with it. Then, when you tried to color it "brown", it turned out the photo on the box wasn't as red as the color turned out to be over your natural hair color, and did nothing to the black portion.  

The only way to lighten it now is to bleach it.  I recommend seeing a professional who specializes in fixing color problems, if you want to try to restore your hair color.  Listen to this person. If you want long hair, you need to treat it nicely.

At this point, who knows what will happen to it if you make more drastic changes on your own? You should probably plan on growing out the treated portion, and think about learning to love your hair, rather than trying to radically change it.

They gave me(well i had to buy) "The Uncolor System". And used it twice.  It really did work, it washed all of the red out and some of the black which has been there for almost a year! so.....yea im happy now lol

Being happy is the most important!  Glad it worked out.

In the future, just for a reference for anyone who is interested, it's recommended to use a color stripper on dark dyes. I really adore ColorFix by Jheri Redding because it is very gentle on your hair. I have used it to remove black dyes successfully after 2 to 3 rounds of this product. Then I was able to re-color in lighter colors. It won't return you to your natural color (eg: brown) but a light orange color which is NORMAL. You have an option to bleach afterwards (if you're naturally light blond) or re-color in your natural shade. ColorFix never failed me in the past when I was dyeing my hair a lot back then. It got out black, brown and even red dyes pretty well. I highly recommend it.
