Thanks Anais Satin! My birthday is on the 16th, so I have a while to go yet. :-)

On Saturday, my 2 best friends turned up on my doorstep and kidnapped me for the day (I thought they were just unusually caffeine-deprived, since we had lattes straight away). I was taken out shopping for a sexy outfit, given a sushi lunch, then taken home to my friend's house where they stuck me in the tub with hair & face masks and various other spa accoutrements. After a few hours we all got dressed to the nines (hair related detail: the mask did wonders and my hair did its fab ringlet look with some rhinestone clips to hold it back), and they walked me around town until I was thoroughly confused about where I was going.

We arrived at a 17th c. brick house decorated with candles, knocked on the door and my boyfriend opened wearing his spiffy black suit. He gave me a long-stemmed red rose and a pineapple containing a (quite toxic) cocktail. At this point I was a bit in shock and was later described as looking like a lamb being led to the slaughter. I entered a room filled with 35 of my closest friends, who started singing Happy Birthday to me (in English and Swedish).

Of course, I was incredibly moved - I was shaking and spilled my pineapple all over the place. There's nothing like realizing how much you are loved! We had a fantastic evening with tapas, a bonfire in the bricked garden, lots of candles, drinks named after me, fireworks, Arabian music, an off-key but enthusiastic rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner at midnight (I'd forgotten the 4th) and me being tossed up in the air (with knickers al fresco, but I seem to be the only one to remember THAT).

I still grin every time I think about it, it was one of the best nights of my life! ;D

Thanks everyone, I'm touched! And I will gladly share my cake with everyone who wants a piece!  ;D

I had dinner out with friends last night, they made me wear a headband with pink sparkly bobbles, sang to me about 50 times and inundated me with gifts. :-)

The highlight of the day was my boyfriend's present, he got me a vintage Vespa! I'll have to get Bikerbraid's advice now for helmet-friendly hairdos!

Hugs to you all,
Kate

You are so lucky to have such great friends.  Sounds like you had a great birthday.

Helmets are important - never ride without one.  Brain injuries are serious, permanent disabilities.  Motorcycle helmets are different from bicycle helmets.  Never having ridden on a motorcycle of any size (and never will), I'm not real familiar with what works for hair in the helmets.  I have heard that they can be big enough to wrap your hair around your head, then put the helmet on.  Braiding your hair is always a great option.

Have fun!

Definitely not! I've ridden on the back of my brother's motorcycles many times, but never owned one myself. We were out looking at helmets and jackets today (motorcycle jackets have plates in them to protect your spine and joints). I think I'll be limited to French braids for a while, I can't do a proper English braid on my short hair yet!
