Title: hair salons
Post by candylipsgurl on Aug 3rd, 2004 at 8:10am
I dont like going to salons or letting anyone do my hair. everytime I let a stylist near my head they want to chop it off,and they totally screw it up. A long time ago A friend of my aunts did my hair she was a stylist and she trimmed my hair after she had styled it. I was young so I couldnt tell her not to. Needless to say it was all uneven and it looked terrible. It took a long time to get it  somewhat even again. I am scared to go to a salon now because i know they will try to convince me to get it all chopped up into a "fashionable hairstyle". I cant trim my hair by myself so i dont but i know i need to. I dont really have anyone else to do it for me because all my family lives kinda far away. Its either go to a salon full of hair butchers or not trim it at all. My husband wont do it because he says he doesnt know how and is too scared. I hope not trimming it wont make it look too bad. :( :( :'( Will trimming it in a ponytail be a bad idea?

I use a method I found years ago on another board:
First I brush out my hair, remove any tangles and put it all on the back.I make sure (with a mirror)  it hangs down evenly and in line. Then I grab it all with one hand, bring it in front and cut off a few mms in a straight line. You have to make sure you hold the hair tightly and it doesn't move-otherwise the ends will be uneven.
I only cut off a little at a time,so even if I make a mistake there's no harm done.
This method works wonderfully for me,after all I've got my 3 year anniversary of *not* entering a salon in September  ;D

I don't like salons, they are mostly rude, and they are just out to get your money. Most of them anyway. Back when I got haircuts they never gave me the correct cut I wanted.

There was this salon lady that advised me to get my ends trimmed every 6 weeks, every 6 weeks. Is she out of her mind. 1 trim is about 12 dollars. I can understand every 3 or 4 months, but the only reason you need to be trimming every 6 weeks if you are maintaining length, not growing it.

although he could be a great help in feye's method: put a soft scrunchie at the nape of your neck and look down at your feet, than ask him to softly pull the scrunchie down over your spine and make him trim the point off as horizontally as possible (i pulled the thing in front of me like feye does, but i think it's a lot easier if someone can cut it behind your back. that way normally it will be fine right away!
i dunno if that will be suffucient, personally i did the second step as well. (parting the hair and bringing it over the shoulders and trimming the uneven hairs off.)

I just read your response to my hubby as a suggestion for a different way to trim my hair.  He has been afraid to trim my hair now that it is low on my rear end.  He's afraid of nipping me with the scissors!   :o

you mean my suggestion bikerbraid?

note that i the first time i trimmed myself, i just asked him to help me pull down the scrunchie cuze i felt i was moving it down in a very non-vertical way. he managed to do that so i think he could manage as well to cut off 1/4"! i had the idea you somehow can't cut as straight when you pull it in front of you and then you're forced to take of more in the next step or even to redo the hole thing.

Yes  :D

When your hair is long enough, you can secure the ponytail in back, then bring it forward and not cause an uneven trip.

yeah, if the hair can be pulled in front of you without having to move it over the shoulder it must be ok. if i do that my hair ends up somewhere in my armpit  ;D
