Title: VERY Slow growing hair...what to do?
Post by helzerman on Aug 14th, 2004 at 2:59pm
Three years ago, I had my hair cut very short....to the ears.  Three years later, after only getting trims once every 6 weeks (and now once every two months), my hair is just past my sholders!  I know this is very slow growth and wondering what, if anything I can do.

I use good shampoo (BumbleBumble) conditioner, etc.  I also do not bleach or perm it.

Lastly, the longest my hair has ever been is about one inch above my breast at which point I did not notice -any- new growth over six months (that's when I got frustrated and cut it very short).

I'm trying to grow my hair now, but am wondering if it is a useless cause.  Also, my hair is very fine and not much of it, so it sits very marsha brady style.

Any ideas??

Would love to hear from anyone with fine, slllloooowww growing hair who ended up having it grow.

I am 36 and have never had long hair and always wanted it.

I just started taking vitamins for it too.

Welcome, Helzerman!

I don't have fine hair, but many other board members do. (come out, come out!) Hair sometimes reaches resting phases, and hair also slows down as you reach mid-thirties (I'm not sure/not in my thirties, but this is what I've heard). But many finehairs like Anne-Marie (44 inches plus) have reached incredible lengths. With care and patience your hair will surely grow! and keep taking those vitamins...

Welcome to Longlocks :D

Why don't you try measuring your hair once a month? This will help you determine how much growth exactly you are getting. I'm sure with patience and determination, your hair will grow to the longer lengths.  :)

Try having your hair trimmed less often.  I bet they are trimming off more than your realize, which is taking off all your growth.

I also have very fine hair and not a lot of it.  It also
has a slight wave pattern and tends to get dry on
the ends.  My hair has never seemed to grow all that
fast, either.  I've had friends who've grown out short
cuts much faster than I.  Very frustrating.  I know it does
grow, because back in the day I was getting highlights
In sure had to get those roots touched up!!  I figure
it may have been due to: chemical treatments, which
I've stopped and you don't do, bad, products, which
I"ve changed and you seem to use good ones.  I think
the suggestion that you are getting more trimmed off
than you know might be it.  That's what I think my case
is.   I've recently started taking vitamins to see if that
will speed up the growth, it has only been about a month so I can't say yet if it's worked.   Anyway, with
good treatment, a healthy diet and maybe some extra
vitamins, and  small trims, your hair is bound to grow!

I have VERY fine hair and not much of it - And it takes AGES to grow.... due to stress, hereditry factors and poor circulation - "give up I hear you cry!... and I did for a while...

Two years ago I had a very short pixie style (as my friends kept telling me to get it cut and I succumbed - I won't do it again though!) Anyway 2 years later and it is just hovering at the base of my neck! HOWEVER I have been through quite a few traumatic experiences in the last 2 years and this hasn't helped (loads fell out) it is just starting to look thicker now but that is after 11 months of REALLY looking after it and eating well and taking vits etc. So be patient - try and forget about it or do what I do and just imagine it's loger than it is  - enjoy the length it is now as it won't be that length for long. AND EAT REALLY WELL!!!

I'm a hair stylist and everyones hair grows half an inch a month. Thats how we can keep up with how much to cut off, especially with mens hair cuts! So, :) when you were getting your hair cut every 6 weeks, basically you got half an inch cut off and probably plus some giving it no time to grow out.

i'd say: eat whole foods and you won't even need to spend money on all those vitamins. i don't even really get the thing about biotin. apparently a real deficiency is very rare and doesn't come just with hair loss, also digestive problems you can't miss. also, your body is supposed to produce a bit itself if it's in serious lack.
and personally i always found milk to be the biggest power juice for nails and hair (before i started taking birthcontroll pills, i was able to grow nails of easily 5 cm!). just drink skimmed milk of course.

yep, forget those silly trim rules. twice a year (or even just once) should be more than enough, especially when it's not really long yet and thus the hair is still young. i once didn't cut mine for 2 years and had no problems at all. (and i dye my hair!)

Don't stop there.. if you're brave enough helzerman, take the cutting into your OWN hands.  Then you'd know for SURE how much was coming off.  No offense to stylists out there, but I've been to some pretty sneaky ones... the few who tell you "oh, it's only 2 inches" and they end up taking five.. I know that can be traumatic when you haven't had a chance to even reach BSL yet!  :o

But everyone's advice is great, eat healthy, get excersizing, and make sure you get plently of beauty rest... your hair will catch up, I promise.
