is it just me or does anyone else find it annoying that any 'makeover' show you watch, they always cut the persons hair so short - i was watching one the other day and this woman had lovly waist-length hair - and they cute it above her shoulders - i wish for once that they would at least try something with longer hair - it would be nice to see how they would put it up or something - i don't know - maybe it's just me but i was wondering if anyone else ever noticed this

I think those shows like to do the drastic cuts, because it is just that - drastic.  It makes a significant change in how the person looks, which then "justifies" the makeover.

I'm probably the only one that doesn't find these shows annoying, because...

And yes, Drummergirl, I've noticed these shows too. When I still had time to watch television, that is. But.... it also makes the longhair want to fantasize about how they'd resist getting on one of those shows... I'd give the show host a swift kick in the butt, then zoom over to the nearest exit ;D ;D

Ugh, I hate makeover shows! I don't care about the clothes part at all; the make-up is usually okay; and I always turn 'em off before they get to the hair. I've also seen more than one episode where someone's beautiful long hair has been cut to above the shoulders.

I was watching TLC's "What Not to Wear" the other day (that show annoys me to no end, but my sister looooves it), and I came to wondering how many, if any, prospective guests they go to who refuse to go through the makeover. It must be a kick in the face for the show; they go through all the trouble of having the person secretly taped for two weeks before the hosts show up and surprise them with the chance to have a complete makeover. If that happened to me I'd refuse to do it and walk away, and wish they'd actually show it on television.  :P
I love it when the guests on that show get rebellious and go against the rules they're supposed to follow for buying clothes. I was especially proud of one woman who bought a pair of cowboy boots that cost around $500 when that was the one thing she was supposed to stay away from at all costs.

I agree, Cairn. These people running makeover shows just want to make carbon-copy barbie dolls of everyone. They should save themselves the trouble and go look in the mirror and congratulate themselves on their good taste and lack of imagination.

Although I will admit, many times when they chop off extremely long hair, it looks to be in terrible shape. The person is always wearing her hair down - not that that's necessarily bad, but it usually highlights her scraggly ends and frazzled condition of the rest of her hair. Why don't these women ever wear their hair UP? And why don't they ever wear makeup in the before shots? And why is short, layered, coloured-within-an-inch-of-its-life hair appealing to so many?

I have seen several of these make-overs on Oprah where they cut off both men and women's long hair  :o it makes me sick to see all that beautiful hair go.  :'(

Yech, I just made the mistake of watching Oprah (always makes me feel like I'm wading through cotton candy), and among other things they chopped off the hair of 6 women. They all had such gooorgeous hair, waist length or longer, shiny, great condition.

They must have clothed the girls specifically in the before shots, they were all wearing baggy, unflattering, colorless sweatshirts. None of them was smiling. Of course, after the makeover, they wore smart, tailored outfits, glowed with makeup and manically flipped their bobs while prancing about the stage. I bet several of them regretted the chop when they got home that evening.

Sadly, their hair was donated to Locks of Love. Apparently there was some sort of "Rapunzel Contest," earlier in the year, and - get this - the winner got her hair cut and made into a wig for LoL. They actually had the recipient on the show, a girl with alopecia. It's not surprising that people support LoL if they market themselves as the champions of poor suffering adolescents.

Yeah, what is it about those bleedin makeover shows? I don't get it. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like shootin the telly every time those Oprah or Maury Povich makeover shows come on.

When you think back to Renaissance times and the Middle Ages most all women had their hair long and were proud to wear it that way. I wonder if things will ever go back to that ever again in the future. Or have people become so desensitised by what's tube fed us through the telly to look like a teeny boppers that we never will?

I gave up on TV shows long ago - there are much better things I'd rather spend my time on - bike riding, knitting sock and mittens, playing with my hair.

As for long hair becoming the norm - I don't see that happening . >:(  People have been tooooo brainwashed.

woman had long hair.   Even fine thinnies like me.
they wore it up most of the time, I'm sure.  Even
older ladies had long hair.  I'ts funny when you
think that now you can't have long hair because
you're "too old, to short, to gray, hair too thin",ect.
what did THOSE ladies do.  And men have worn their
hair long at different times in history.  Remember

I agree most T.V. is garbage these days, with a few

I'm sure that one day, fantastically long hair will be the rage again. Probably once we develop pills that will grow hair an inch overnight!  ;D  :o Today the world is smaller, cultures overlap, and there is so much more variety that I doubt if one trend will sweep the world as it did as recently as 100 years ago. Back then, society was more restrictive and there was less deviation from the norm. Nowadays, you see crew cuts, floor-length hair and every length (and colour) in between. Variety is the spice of life!

Being able to choose your hairstyle is much more important than having the "style of day".  During the times when all women had long hair, they did not have any choice.  At least today, we can pick our hairstyle, be it short or long and will not be an outcast for our choice.

That's true, I'm glad we have the choice to go short or
long today.  It seems that there is more variety even
now than there was 10-20 years ago.  Now it seems
that you can pretty much wear your hair how you want,
curly, straight, long, short, ect and I think that's good.

I'm glad that it is acceptable for men to have long hair today too, I just love long hair on guys!  ;) ;D

Yes! I remember Absalom. In fact, he was well known for his beautiful long hair...which he shaved once a year because it was so "heavy upon his head" and it weighed "two hundred shekels".  That is nearly 5lbs!! Can you imagine growing that much hair a YEAR?

Hate the shows for the hair and for the attitude in general, so I avoid them, grrrr.

BUT - I really think semi long is back, like lower bra strap to waist.  I sure see a lot of it where I live, on all ages too ... yippppeeeee

I'm the exact same. I don't think I've totaled 2lbs in my entire lifetime!

One good thing about fine hair- it never gets too heavy
-so no headaches with updos! ;D
