Title: an interesting day...
Post by nightowl on Nov 13th, 2004 at 3:52pm
Yesterday was a first for me.

I was out with my cousin for the afternoon for lunch and errands - and saw more long haired men in 4 hours than I have in the past 4 months!

At lunch there was a 'surfer dude' with shoulder blade length hair......... thick and blond - lots of highlights...8)

Then, while driving to the store, I saw a jogger up ahead, and thought there was a strap or something hanging down his back... no - it was a herringbone braid past to the mid back - thick and black...  :D

While shopping for a gift for my sis in Linens 'N Things... the guy who asked if we needed any help had nice red hair - pulled away from his face - when he turned to leave he had a banded ponytail at least 20 inches long and curly...  :o

Then - when in hallmark, a fellow walked by carrying a starbucks coffee - and his chestnut/brown hair was up in a  twisted bun with a beautiful hairstick....   :)

Then, driving into the Costco parking lot - I saw very long hair blowing in the wind - it was bound at the nape with a leather strap and was HIP LENGTH!!!    ;D  It took me a moment to realize it was a man - the hair was so thick - (the base of the pony tail was bigger than my forearm), and it was blowing around - he was partially obscured...
I couldn't believe how healthy and shiny his hair was - I actually drove to where he was getting into his car, pulled along side and called out the window, " I'm sorry if I sound too nuts - but I just had to say how fantastic your hair looks - it is incredible!" -  He actually looked a little embarassed, but said, "thanks so much, it's nice to hear"............

Was that an incredible day, or what?!
(the stuff dreams are made of for this long-locked lass!)

my best wishes for all our gentlemen members here - we ladies love looking at your hair!!!   ;D

I see a lot more longhair on men In WEst Michigan than I use too.  It seems before the First lord of the rings movie came out, there weren't too many male longhairs, the long style had died out. Now it is coming back.  It may even be more pronounced than in the hippy era.  One thing I do not want to see  is people with longhair that don't condition wash or brush, comb their hair. That is what was wrong with Male longhair in the 60's, too many men made a bad name for the rest of the longhaired crowd.

I see this all the time where I am, too. I'm sure its partly inspired by the movie, but it developed a life of its own as guys who always wanted to grow out their hair realized that there's no time like the present.

But we probably wouldn't notice so much if we weren't obsessed with long hair as well.

The condition your hair is in says something about you and how much you care about your appearance, regardless of what length you have chosen or the trendiness of your style.

I get tired of looking at short hair in dreadful condition, too.

For me, the image conjured up by uncared-for male long hair is not that of the hippy.

I know guys who have decided to grow out their hair with no trims, despite the fact that it started in terrible condition and is progressively getting worse. Unfortunately the style is indistiguishable from the one being worn by semi-permanent residents of homeless shelters. I have difficulty understanding why a guy would want to look like a street bum, but I know they consider it a matter of taste.

Title: Re: an interesting day...
Post by kengibson2001 on Nov 15th, 2004 at 12:17am
WEll my hair started in a shaved position, I have had no trims yet, but that was because I started conditioning my hair early, after 5 months with a haircut I started Conditioning.
This is just an observation take it as you will, a lot of street bums have better hair than most men who have short hair.

There was this homeless shelter in my town I was volunteering at and they were all clean, the only good thing about shelters is it gets people off the streets.  A lot of these people are ex-veterans, ex prisoners who have learned their lesson, or people that fell on hard times. Do not make a judgement on people that are homeless, while a minor part of the homeless population is homeless, because they do drugs or drink too much, many want to get out of that lifestyle.

Anyway enough of the rant.

One day last week I noted that there were four of us males with long ponytails in the magazine section of the bookstore. That was quite cool.

There used to be a guy working at the mall who wore a small bun every day. He's gone now. From time-to-time I'll see another guy wearing a bun but it is quite rare. As for hairsticks, I'm *it*. I've never seen another guy here in Ottawa wearing hairsticks.

I'm also in the "hair-growing-out-without-trims" club. I haven't had a trim in 26 months. I regularly check for splits and so far I've found and snipped off exactly two. Maybe I have robust hair? Or I just take good care of it. Natural ends are sometimes called 'fairytale ends' but perhaps males could call them 'caveman ends' or 'pirate ends'.

Gollan,
I saw your picture in the customer gallery of LongLocks Hairsticks Boutique.  Very cool ChapStix!

I vote for Pirate Ends; it makes me think of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in
Pirates of the Caribbean

Think I need to watch that again...

Johnny Depp............ *faints*

There are unfortunatly no fellows around here with long hair  :'(  It's so sad!  Though there are many long-tressed ladies.. I'm in the whiplash of the Bible-belt (excuse the reference) and there is a huge community of Pentacostals here.. the ladies tend to grow their hair as long as it will get...

;D  I've been mistaken as a Pentacostal a few times, and have been embarrassed as well.. one Pentacostal woman came up to me while at work (I work in a bookstore) and said, "my, but you're a pretty thing.. I'm looking for a girl like you for my son..."

:-[ :-[ :-[  She seemed a little discontented that I wasn't Pentacostal, but she did invite me to her church...   Maybe some other time....

funny, the person with the longest hair i ever saw in REAL  was male (at a gig in Brussels, don't remember which one). his thick dark blond ponytail went all the way to his knees without any loss of volume (so not even close to his terminal length!).
i encountered at least two other guys with long dark blond hair (about classic length). one was a singer in some death metal band (no i dont like death metal) and the other one was a model in my painting evening class (yes, NUDES!
hihi (i am sorry, it seems so long ago right now) ).

I would love to take a painting class working with live models.  No such thing is offered around here, such a suppressive area...
I think it would be very challenging, did you enjoy it?

oh yeah, i learned probably the most in those classes during the model sessions. for painting the internet is a better place though. technics of the old masters are just not taught anymore. it's a long time ago though. i took those lessons when i was 16 -17. i am 25 now lol.

Speaking of that.

I found this photo at the longhaired scientists website. His hair is amazing, I can't imagine having hair that long.

:o :o JAYNEY MACK!!  :o :o

Ok...so I stand corrected. A man with hair down to the floor is certainly a sight to see.

Why is it men are able to do that so easily without even thinking of it? And then women like me are left trying to grow their hair for aeons and barely get 3 inches?
Hmmm......... >:(

But then again scientists are well known for having ridicolous hair look at Einstein.  His hair is a little thin past the knees, and when he has it braided it looks a bit messy.  I would like to ask him how long it took him to do that. While I would never grow it to the floor, I may grow it to classic length just to see what it would look like.

Title: Re: an interesting day...
Post by maggie on Nov 17th, 2004 at 3:11pm
So what exactly is "classic length"?

Title: Re: an interesting day...
Post by bikerbraid on Nov 17th, 2004 at 3:27pm
Classic length is usually to the bottom of your rear end.

Title: Re: an interesting day...
Post by maggie on Nov 17th, 2004 at 3:47pm
Oh, wow!  I think that's a little out of my reach, though.  I'm pretty sure that I've hit my terminal length at BSL, it has never gotten any longer than what it is now, not even as a child.  It's OK, but a little longer would be nicer.  How 'bout that wave in his hair? Wow!  You trim that up and take better care of it and that would be hair to die for, and look at that awesome strawberry blonde color! Such potential!  I have a male friend with awesome red hair that used to wear it long - about 6" short of waist length- unbelievable!  That was during the "hair band" phase in the late "80's-early '90's, but he has since cut it and keeps it short.  Another male friend of mine also wore his hair long, he had this thick, shiny naturally wavy dirty blonde hair that went close to waist length.  His pony tail was like 4" around, I swear any girl would have scalped this guy to have hair like that, and of course, he cut it ALL off now.  I mean ALL, like Mr. Clean.  So sad...so, so sad  :'(.  Boy, I know more long haired guys than I thought...in fact, I think moreso than short haired guys. Interesting.

From what I understand 1 in a hundred thousands people don't have a terminal length, meaing their hair grows out forever, only thing that limits their length is condition.  There was this guy in china who just died who had 25 to 30 feet of hair. All matted down of course

Yeah...I remember seein that fella on the telly once. It wasn't in the best of shape, but he had miles of hair!

Oh to have those abilities!  ;D

Title: Re: an interesting day...
Post by bikerbraid on Nov 17th, 2004 at 6:39pm
Keep in mind, that long hair that is matted, probably isn't really that long.  Like with dreads, the hair locks to each other, so it never sheds away - it will remain attached to growing hair, giving the appearance of longer hair.

Think of it like yarn.  No sheep has hair that is yards long.  The hair is spun together to lock the fibers and allow the appearance of a long "strand".

That scientist hair is such a beautiful color!  :) I don't think I would want my hair that long though, mine is almost to classic length and I think when it reaches that I will keep it there.  ;D

Every year?   :o

Great Mercy!  I couldn't stand it.  The longest I ever made it to was about 5 days.. I was VERY sick and couldn't do a thing about it.

That said, I'm rather envious of this scientist's long hair... but I think I'm going to stop at when my hair starts brushing my thigh.. anything more and I think it would be rather tough to take care of.  I just love to see one long braid swinging about... *dreams*

It looks great, but.. do guys ever worry about this?  I'm curious.  When you look at him from the back angle, I think a lot of people (I hate to say it, but myself included) might think he was a she... that is, until he turned around..  :-[

Still.. male or no, I'm experiencing major hair envy....

Title: Re: an interesting day...

Pictures are the hardest for determining gender.  I've found that once the person "moves", I can usually tell if they are male or female.

Title: Re: an interesting day...
Post by kengibson2001 on Dec 10th, 2004 at 5:40pm
I found that too. When Women walk its more of a passive walk. I find when men walk including myself its more fast and aggressive.

But to be very honest, even when men are in drag I can still tell they are men.

Back photos though are the hardest Determination of Gender. If Ahhhhhhhnold of California(look at my biceps) had long hair and he had a picture of himself in the back you could probally tell it was a man.

It is harder to tell for skinny dudes though.

Title: Re: an interesting day...
Post by bikerbraid on Dec 11th, 2004 at 12:53am
Shoulder width will sometimes give away gender, but you are right - the thin guys are harder to distinguish.

Title: Re: an interesting day...
Post by novusfemina on Dec 11th, 2004 at 1:20pm
It's because of the slender shoulders.. it throws me off.  But then, Bikerbraid, you're right, you can usually tell by the walk if the person is male or female.

And yes, it is obvious when you see an alpha male.. you can see the muscles peeking out from through the hair and.. well aside from female body builders, being "beefy" is kinda a guy thing.

But I suppose if you wanted to be like Arnold and then have long hair... well, I guess you'd end up looking like Fabio..  ::)

I have a friend that is female and she if you look at her from the back you would think she was a guy. She has a guys shape: a narrow flat rear, broad shoulders, and she is 6 feet tall the only real female shape she has is her chest lol. Sorry guys for the flat rear comment I know some guys out there don't have a flat rear  ;D.

wow, I want that hair...

Unfortunately mine just doesn't want to get any longer than the middle of my back...

When it comes to being mistaken for women from behind - I've had it a few times. A couple of times people at work have commented that until I turned round they had wondered who the new red haired girl was - but most often I get it when I'm travelling.  I'll be sitting on the plane with my head in a book, and one of the cabin crew will refer to me as "ma'am" when coming round with the refreshments - until I look up, and then they get horribly embarrsed and apologise profusely.  I just find it funny though :) Even funnier is when they make the mistake and then don't apologise - I always wonder if they're just hoping I didn't notice, or if they just never cottoned on...

You know, I wonder if a lot of short-haired women, especially if they don't wear makeup and dress ambigiously, get called, "Sir".  I've seen some I was not at all sure about.

When I was young and wore a pixie cut, I was frequently mistaken for a boy.   :-/

Now that I have long hair I don't think that mistake would ever be made, but then I also have a distinctive female body shape - very pear shaped.  Even with short hair I doubt the mistake would be made now!   ::)

I've had that happen to me when I WAS wearing makeup. Of course I was in baggy clothes, and the person mistook me for a fella from behind. This was back when I had my punkish spiky short hair in my mid-teens. At the time, I wasn't amused...but then about 2 weeks later, I made the same mistake to some poor woman at the checkout queue in the market.

"Excuse me sir...", says I, and to my horror a woman turns around, highly irritated. I got all flustered and apologize profusely.  :-[

It was an honest mistake though. She was kinda butch!
