Title: Age and Hair Growth
Post by UP_Lisa on Jan 21st, 2005 at 3:45pm
For those of you who are 40 or older.  Have you noticed any difference in your rate of hair growth compared to when you were younger?  I'm 44, and I think I'm still getting about a 1/2 inch a month.

My hair grows about 1/2" a month, too, but it used to grow faster when I was younger. Back when my daughter was small and we had the same haircut, I used to have to get a trim more often than she did. Then she bleached out her hair and it took forever to grow out. It seems like I had twice the growth rate that she did.

eKatherine,

You aren't 40 or more, are you?

I've thought of you as younger.

My hair seems to grow pretty fast, I think it actually grows faster than it used.  :o ;D

Being well over 40, I'd have to say my hair has slowed down in growth.  The change in hormones played a big part in the slow down and the thinning.  I know my hair grew more than 1/2" a month when I was younger.  Now I'm tickled pink if I get 1/2".

I haven't yet noticed a slow down in growth or thickness
yet(I've always been fine and thin) but I haven't yet entered menopause.  I figure slow down in growth and
thickness will start then.  I'll be in trouble, too because
my hair is already rather thin and slow growing.  My hair grows about 5-6 inches a year.  My mom, who is 79, says now she's old she doesn't have to bother shaving her legs  much any more because that process slows or stops with old age.  One good thing, I guess.

Maybe I am only thinking my hair grows faster on account of I am always having to cover the regrowth of gray.  :P Seems like it is a constant battle to renew the color on the gray, why does the gray grow out so darned fast.  :-/  :o

Having to touch up roots keeps you in touch with your hair growth rate in a way that women who don't dye their hair can never experience. :D

Yeah, I never thought my hair grew very fast at all, until I had to touch up the dark roots after I started heavily highlighting my medium brown hair blonde.  It seems
like it was time for a touch up every time I turned around.  That's just one reason, besides many others, I  don't want to do it any more.  But yes,  as eKatherine said, it gave me a sense and appreciation
of my hair growth!! :) (It still never seemed to get longer).

While trying to keep my hair short so it styled well, it seemed to grow way too fast.  Now that I want it to grow fast.... :(
Even so, I think age may certainly play a factor in slowing hair growth -- there are many changes that occur in our bodies with aging, some are even positive!  Not that I can think of a positive one right now ;)

Hey, THAT is positive!  But loss of hair on the legs is also associated strongly with decreased circulation, which isn't likely to be a problem on our heads since our heads are so much closer to our hearts (sounds like there is a good "moral to the story" in that statement ;D).

Until December - I'd never even "officially" measured my hair to determine growth rate

But - in my teens it seemed rather sluggish - maybe 4-5 inches per year - but I was frequently brutal - swimming in pools, ocean, etc - and NO proper hair care - even used (collective gasp, ladies....) Prell shampoo or head and shoulders.  Might as well have gotten out the comet or ajax and done a good scrub - ha ha

In my twenties - pregnancy - prenatals - I couldn't believe rapid growth that lasted about 4 years - 7-8 inches per year (going by photos from that time) - it was AMAZING!!!!

Thirties - trimmed about 2-3 inches 2-3 times per year - always kept hair below waist, above hip...  Seemed rather ordinary - nothing special

Now - Forties.... Babying my hair has become my hobby and my passion - have kept it up with hair sticks for about 15 months - doing "all the right things", taking supplements..... It really does seem thicker and shinier than last decade - or perhaps just bouncier and happier.  Has become more wavy and with more heavy, curly hairs mixed in with my baby fine straight ones - and - very, very few split or thin ends!  And - the growth rate seems better than in the last decade  - I guess I'll have to wait till the February measure up!

Well, eKatherine, if you look half as good in the front as you do in the back, you needn't worry about age!
