Title: vinegar clarifying rinse? help!
Post by BraiderSC on Mar 19th, 2005 at 1:54pm
Okay, I could swear that I have seen recipes for  a vinegar clarifying rinse on this site somewhere, and now I can't find it anywhere!  Does anybody have the recipe, or know where it is?  Thanks!!!

Pretty simple. I use 1/2 cup vinegar mixed to 1 quart with warm water. You can use more or less.

I use about a 1/4 cup in a 1/2 gallon, but I don't measure anything, I just pour a bit of vinegar into my jug, then add some warm water from the shower.  Exact measurements are not necessary.  Some people like the concentrationn more diluted, others stronger.

While we're on the subject, when do you do the rinse?  Between wash and condition?  After conditioning?  Both?

I tried both today, gotta say I'm impressed :)  Who knew vinegar would do anything for hair?

I do my vinegar rinse between my shampoo and conditioning.  I feel this removes any product build up which then allows the conditioner a better chance to do its work.

Some people do the vinegar rinse last.  Since the vinegar is supposed to return the Ph balance of the hair and close the cuticle of the hair, this also makes sense.

I guess it all depends on your hair and the types of products you use as to which is better for you.

I have a weird variation on this.  I'm in love with honey, use it in my rinse out conditioner and then ... while that is still in the hair I have a mix of vinegar, honey and water in a nuzzled bottle and rinse with that before detangling and final rinse.

Seems to be working rather well ...g

Thanks everybody!  I found a thread concerning this at the long hair community.  They suggested 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar to 1 quart of water.  It worked well for me (I used it inbetween shampoo and conditioner) and my hair was so soft!  It left my scalp a tiny bit greasier than normal, so I don't think i would want to use any more vinegar than I did.

I believe vinegar just restores Ph level.  It doesn't clarify.

Vinegar has some chelating properties which will help remove product that clings to the hair.  It does this by restoring the hair to its natural Ph value.

It is not a clarifyer in the same way as a clarifying shampoo works.

I have never tried 'clarifying' my hair but I can see from this site, it might be good.  Is this just regular...white vinegar I presume?

You will see many people prefering ACV (apple cider vinegar), but white vinegar will work just as well (I use it all the time).

So, I have seen the measurements to use...can anyone tell me how often I should use this rinse?  By the way, I tried it last night.  Scared me at first because hair felt so different after using...but dried nicely.  thanks for the tip.

Some people do an ACV rinse every time they wash their hair, others do it less often.  If you use products that tend to build up on the hair, such as those with -cones, I'd suggest frequent rinses.

As I have mentioned in a previous forum, I have severe psoriasis on my scalp.  Subsequently I use tar shampoo (gawd, how to dry your hair out and get stinky hair) after which I always do a really good condition.  HOWEVER, I also use a topical product that makes my hair REALLY greasy on weekends.  I think it is obvious why I do it when I do not have to go to work!!!  Now, while this stuff is really greasy, it does wash out with a couple of shampoos.  Should I think about using it whenever I use this oily stuff.  It is prescription, so I am not sure what is in it.

just an fyi if you'd like to check it out.  Ida at Chagrin Valley makes shampoo bars and you can get a generous sample bar for $1.95.  I know there are bars for psoriasis and dry scalp.  They may help :)

so is the concesus basically that it is more beneficial to the hair to use after both Shampooing and Conditioning? or before ocnditioning?  I think I want to try this in my normal routine.
