Anyone have any suggestions for do-able hairstyles for about shoulder-length or slightly longer hair?

I'm getting antsy. I want to be able to do something with my hair! lol

For the last one you can use a smaller sock and twist or braid the ends around the bun if you don't want them loose.

When my hair was that length I would french and dutch braid it all the time.  Depending on your hair type you might be able to make mini buns, or a half-up style at your length.

You could tug on the ends to try to make it grow faster, but it hasn't worked for me yet.  ;)

I should have specified that my hair is layered and not all of it is shoulder-length yet. On top of which, it's very thin.

I can't put it in a ponytail yet without renegade shorter locks popping out of the ponytail holder, so buns are out.

But the twisted cornrows and the crown roll look doable for me. I'll try them and if they work out well I'll post pictures!

Which poses a new question: clips? What is good and bad for fine, thin, oily (read: doesn't like to stay in an updo EVER) hair? I need to find some clips, I currently have NO hair toys at all. Only just today did I look in the mirror and realize that I had to be able to do SOMETHING with this.

Scunci has some new non-slip products, including clips.  They seem to work.

Mini-claws/clips work well at that stage. You might have to try a couple of styles of clips to find one that holds best. Vidal Sasson has some "soft touch" barrettes, etc. that hold pretty well too without tearing your hair.  They can't handle a lot of hair any way, so thin hair should work well.

Yeah, looking at these, I think I'm mostly confined to clips for a little while. I don't think anything based on a ponytail is quite possible...maybe something half-up, I'll have to try that.

So I don't have any clips yet but I just tried twisting my hair into the "reverse roll" just to see how it looked (it's also on that www.dressytresses.com website)...and it looks kind of funky. It could be that I'm not just very dexterous yet, but I was wondering something...I read something in one of the other rooms about some styles being easier to do, or looking nicer, when hair is freshly washed, and some being easier to do when hair is between washings....I was wondering if anyone had experiences with this.

I did notice that I have more flyaways when my hair needs to be washed...it becomes much shiner and more cohesive when it's just been washed, although it's at its softest between washings.

Eh, I dunno. I think I'll wash my hair and then try to track down some clips. Yes, I know I said I was going to wait until my next paycheck. I'm impatient. LOL.

You don't have to break the bank for clips -- I got a lot of mine at Wal-Mart or a local drug store for a couple of dollars for a card of 4 or more. :)
I found I could to a half up-do long before the bun or braid.  I'm still not ready for a "naked" bun, I have to use a bun cover (I've crocheted a few) to keep all the short hairs under control.  Galadriel uses a bun net, but I haven't been able to find one that size and the regular size just doesn't seem to work for me.

I have also found my hair does better with certain hairstyles depending on how long since it's been washed.  Trial and error here.  I'm still figuring it all out. :-/

*is starting to think, whether she should start selling bun nets online* Or maybe Rapunzel could find them and start selling them to US customers?  ;D
I haven't seen any online hairtoy store selling the nearly invisible ones that I use.  ???  Really weird, because here they are so easy to find even though most people have short hair. Plainly Dressed (www.plainlydressed.com) sells heavyweight bun nets, but they are clearly meant to be used under a headcovering.

I've seen hairnets/bun nets at Sally's Beauty Supply.  Do you have a store near you?

There used to be a Sally's, but they've closed here.  I'll have to look further afield.  There is a local Sally-like store, but I was disappointed in their stock and they only had the large size nets.  Seems silly to spend so much time looking for something that is so inexpensive ;).  In the meantime the bun covers are working out well for me right now.

Sooooooooo, I was at the drugstore buying more "necessary" things like toilet paper, and I wandered off into the hair accessories section and I found some really neat combs!

For the record, combs DO NOT stay in my hair. But I spotted some by Scunci (I'm officially a fan now) that looked like the regular, semi-wide toothed combs, but in between the regular teeth were these sort of "squiggly" teeth that grip your hair much better when you stick them in. They looked intriguing and they were cheap so I bought them and made my stepmom (waist-length hair, she's 33 and determined to stay young and feminine looking!) show me how to use them. Voila! I had the sections of my hair that are still layered pinned back with combs that held all day! No hair came out when I pulled them out, and I didn't have to pull the roots tightly or do anything un-hair-wise at all!

So I've been working ridiculous amouts of overtime and waiting for the rest of my stuff to arrive at my apartment (I just moved).

I totally know how you feel!  We just got our camera last month (?) so I feel like I've just caught up.  I've been taking pics of my hair w/ sticks with a regular camera since I began collecting them but w/o a scanner I couldn't post them.  :(
Now, if only I could figure out how to make my pics a reasonable size before posting on tinypic.com!  That would be progress.  :P

I size my pictures with paint shop (though I'm pretty sure that photoshop has something similar).

1. Open the picture in your PaintShop.

2. Go to EDIT menu, choose "Zoom to 100%". Don't be scared when the picture turns out being even bigger than you thought. It's now in true size.

3.Go to IMAGE menu, choose "Resize". You will see pixel dimensions. For making pictures nice and small for forums, I usually choose width around 350 pixels. Height adjusts automatically so that proportions of the picture stay right. Press OK.

4. You have now resized your picture. If you don't like the new size, you can just resize again. Remember to save when you're happy with the result.
