Title: How should I do this?
Post by Chanda on May 11th, 2005 at 4:15pm
I have fine hair, and slightly thinning in the front. It's just shoulder length and layered, so the sides are a tad bit shorter than the back. And I have bangs that are almost to the end of my nose.

I need to get a trim soon, and I need some advice!

Should I keep the layers while I'm getting trimmed? If so, I plan to take 1/2" off the ends, all the way around.

Or would I be better off to just trim the back (where it's longer) 1/2", and keep trimming it that way until all of my hair is one length?

As far as my bangs are concerned, I'm not sure what would be best. This is the first time that I'll be letting them grow long to match with the rest of my hair. Or try to, anyway. And of course, I'm slightly thinning where my bangs are, so I don't know...

Again, any advice would be appreciated!

Eventually you will want your hair all one length if you are planning on growing it past BSL.  Until then, I feel it depends on your hair and how you style it as to when the layers should be eliminated.  Some types of hair look better with the layers until the hair gets much longer.

Unfortunately, it is hard for us to tell you what would be best.  You have to go with what you feel comfortable with.  Keeping your hair healthy is a top priority.  After that it is up to you!

What's BSL?

BSL=Bra stap length.

I have very fine hair,too.  As BB said, it is hard to tell what you should do--in my own case, I got my hair to all one length as quickly as possible, because my hair looks like it has more volume that way.  Of course, I started from a just above chin length bob-with light layers in the front and short bangs.  I let the layers catch up with the back-admittally easier that what you will have to do because mine was shorter.  Mine is all one length now,(about 1-2" above BSL) My bangs are now chin length.  I always hated the way I looked without bangs, and hated the growing out (bangs) process-but now all of a sudden they are getting easier to deal with and I now actually like myself  without them.

I ended up cutting off my layers, so now my hair length is about to my collar. The bottom of my collar, at least. I'm working on growing out my bangs, too. Maybe when my bangs get long enough, I'll cut my hair again to be even with my bangs, and then grow it long from there. That will add a few months to my little snail meter.  8)
