Title: mult. hair types on one head?
Post by juri on Jun 18th, 2005 at 8:25pm
This might sound confusing, but I'll do my best to describe what's going on with my hair.  Anyway, while the majority of the hair on my scalp is a 1b, I seem to have a significant amount that's more like 2a, and a couple dozen strands that are extremely thick, wiry, and easy to pull out .  I know my mom's hair is pretty much only one type (not too sure about dad) so I know I didn't get this...phenomena from her.  Would being Japanese-Okanawan have anything to do with it?  Has anyone else noticed that they have more than one hair type?

This isn't exactly a problem, but I was curious.

I have many different types of hair on my head.  I know many others also have more than one type.  I think those with a single type of hair are lucky - it is much easier to deal with a single set of hair issues rather than several.

Thanks, BB!  As far as I know, my relatives don't have this, um,issue so it's nice to know that there's other people who do. :)

Juri, are you more than one Asian race? Is there even a smidgen of Chinese in your blood? Even a smidgen of Chinese in an otherwise non-Chinese ethnicity can make for really bizarre hair. :P Actually this happens to lot of people so it's not that bizarre. 1/4 or 1/2 Chinese will of course give you a higher probability of 2+ hairtypes.

HTH and hugs

Well, as far as I know I'm only 3/4 Japanese and 1/4 Okinawan.  But since I don't know my ancestry past my great-great grandparents and Okinawa did a lot of trading with other parts of Asia, it's possible that an ancestor married someone from China and some of those genes are still showing.  Hmm, that might explain why I've had a few people from Hong Kong ask me if I'm Chinese.

Thanks for the help!  I had never seriously considered the possibility that I might be from more than 2 Asian groups.   :)

Wow, my hair is EXACTLY like yours. I'll find strands that are extremely wiry, coarse, thick, and curly, while the rest are 1b. I'm 100% Japanese. I have no idea why my hair is like this, but it's nice knowing there are other people like me :)

I have at least 3 or 4 shades of hair on my head (from black to lighter browns). All of them are fine though (not sure if any of them are more fine than others or not). My hair is somewhat wavy - more so on the left side of my head than the right side (the right side is almost totally straight and the left side without products in it looks almost curly at times). I am 100% Chinese (75% from the Canton area, 25% from Yunnan Province to the west) - although, I was born here, in Central New Jersey. I don't know why it happens - I always thought that the genes for your hair (or any trait) is expressed by one or the other gene. I do think maybe sometimes in your life things change (like I see my daughter grow - she's 20 months old now - she started off looking ONLY like me but now she looks more like a mix of me and my husband, who is Puerto Rican). She had the thickest hair - like him - now I see her hair is starting to look a little more like mine (thinner and less coarse in texture).
