I'm new here and was just wondering if its OK to use a boar bristle brush on curly hair, since everyone knows your not supposed to brush it because it causes frizzies.

My hair is wavy, not curly, but brushing still causes frizzies for me.  I have a BBB, but rarely use it.  Sometimes I might brush my hair before bed when I'm going to wash it the next morning.  The BBB is primarily and perhaps specifically designed to help distribute oils down the hair from the scalp.  Now, while this is natural protection for the hair, if you are washing your hair frequently there would really be no need for it as long as you are combing your hair to detangle or get dust/lint out.  I think BBB is part of hair care tradition because in the olden days people bathed less often.

Well I wash my hair about 2-3 times a week. And arent you supposed to brush your hair everday with just a regular brush?

I have wavy hair too and I second what Sakina says. For the life of me I can't understand the "need" to brush : I get frizzies and lose much more hair than my regular very wide toothed comb. Just my 2c

I don't brush my hair.  :-/  

The purpose of brushing is to distribute the sebum (oil) down the length of the hair and to smooth the hair into place.  If you are washing your hair 2 -3 times a week, you don't need to distribute the sebum and curly hair is best left untouched as much as possible.

OK, Ok, I'll be the dissenting vote. Although, everyone is correct that brushing curly/wavy hair produces an amount of frizzz or in my case undesired & unwanted volume. I still do it occaisonally because it "feels good". Being a curly/wavy hair, I might get the same feeling from "scritching", but, quite frankly, I haven't the patience for it. When my scalp feels a little itchy or funky, I break out my fave BBB and go to work. Granted this is after careful de-tangling with a comb and I even comb it out after BBBing. The end result for me is that I do not "scritch" and my scalp feels wonderful.

Semi dissent - curly is more open cuticle therefore more sensitive to damage; also, it depends on the look you want - brushing curly hair is going to seperate the individual curls so that instead of curls you'll have something more like frizz - but attractive frizz that some people do intentionally.

Certainly you don't need to brush - there are all sorts of way to massage your scalp and distribute oils.

But it is fun  ;D, if I brush I do it in sections (wavy not curly here) ...g

I have very curly hair and a few years ago I switched from brushing to combing, and now I do neither.  I guess the curls prevent tangles so I there's no need to brush.  I just shake my hair out when it's wet and I'm good to go.

Oh, how lucky are you. I so wish I could wash and go but I would scare too many children.

LOL, Jules!  If I BBbrushed my hair and went, I'd scare little children 'cause I'd look like I'd been electrocuted!

i have waist length curly hair, i used to use a BBB and always had a problem with my hair being frizzy, when i switched to a wide tooth comb after a few weeks i noticed alot less frizz. but i got in a hurry one day and used the BBB and i was back to square one. i only use a wide tooth comb now.

I have the same problem with frizziness.  I only use a wide tooth comb also.  It just seems to separate curls better without making it frizzy.
