Title: Oilling hair???

Pardon my ignorance but why do you oil your hair?

It seals in moisture - similar to what conditioner does.  Some people use oil instead of conditioner to avoid all those extra ingredients.  Some people use both.  It is usually used just on the ends.

For some people (like me) oils can be drying and irritate my skin.  Since I don't use them, I can't offer more information but I'm sure other people will jump in here soon.

Protection and lubrication would be the main goodies derived from it.

As Khrome said some people don't find it compatible.  There is also the middle ground.  Some oils may work while others don't.  Only way to know is to experiment.

Other variations are, how much is put on and whether it's used to wear or as a preconditioner.  Yet another difference in methods - some put it on wet hair some on dry only, some both.

Hope that helps some ...g

Oiling moisturizes the very ends of hair where natural scalp oils can't reach. Moisturized hair is hair in good condition and it doesn't get split ends so easily.

I use jojoba oil on freshly washed dry hair, which is most popular, as it resembles most the oil that scalp produces. It's a light oil, and I need to use only two or three drops for my entire length (hair from ears down). I rub the oil between my hands and then work the hands through my hair so that the oil is distributed evenly. The result doesn't look oily- the hair is just a bit more shiny than it would be without oiling.

I'm glad I found this, I've been wanting to try my jojoba oil on my hair, but wasn't sure how to go about it.  I think I will do as galadriel said, just try a few drops on the ends of my hair, if it looks too oily, I'll just pull it up and be done with it, I guess!  :-/

I have tried several kinds of oil on my hair over the years and they all made my hair oily looking. Jojoba oil is the only one that does not.  I apply it to my hair the same way Galadriel described.

Personally, I oil just the ends to keep them from drying out and splitting. I have very fine hair which tends to dry out at the tips.

Oiling makes it easier to brush through my hair, and also enables me to prolong the intervals between trims.  :)

This might sound nutty, but I bought some Dr. Hauschka normalizing day oil, which is supposed to be for the face, but I didn't really like it that much for m skin so I started using it on my hair. The main oil is apricot kernel oil and almond oil I think. Well, it is the perfect oil for my hair, which is really fine. Even jojobs oil alone is kindo of heavy. Anyway, I can oil my hair with this and it makes it shiny and moisturized but not greasy looking. I don't know if you can buy apricot kernel oil alone, or if that would work as well, but I thought this was great for my fine hair, which is now about 2" past BSL, by the way!! (I spent the last year growing out the damaged parts).

I've heard others mention apricot kernel oil for their hair.  Sounds like you found a good option for your hair!

It is not uncommon to find products that are good for the skin are also good on the hair.  Jojoba oil is frequently used in skin products.

[and on a side note - glad to see you back - you haven't been around much lately!]

I oil my hair regularly with 1-2 drops of jojoba oil, and it never looks greasy, except for one time.  I had just used a silicone-heavy finishing gloss that day and I guess it must have blocked the oil from absorbing, and it looked greasy.  But normally I have great success.  I also like to apply aloe vera and then apply jojoba right after.  I guess my theory is to moisturize with the aloe and "seal it in" with the oil.  I don't know if that's actually what happens, but it seems to work well for me.

I've just started oiling my hair with jojoba oil and I love it!  I would have never thought of putting oil on my fine hair. Greasy roots is often a problem for me, so extra oil sounded silly.  I only put in on my ends, however and it doesn't make my roots any oilier.  In fact, it evens out my hair more, so my ends are as shiny as my roots.  I will definitely continue with jojoba oil.  Also, I only need such a little bit of oil, my $10 bottle will last for a very long time!

I oil my fine hair with jojoba oil too and I cannot go without it!  I mix EO's with mine in different scents for lovely scented hair every day! ;)

Amanda, live on the wild side!!  Don't limit yourself to just jojoba oil!  There are lots of different oils that are not greasy and absorb well into the hair.  You can even mix up your own recipe !  Experiment to see which one or few your hair likes! :)
