Title: Trying something new.. Shaggy Hairstyle
Post by MoreThanAlex on Feb 8th, 2006 at 12:54am
Hello everyone, I am new on the boards. I don't know if I am posting on the right section and if I'm not, I do apologize since there are so much sections to choose from..I think this sections suits for my thread :D

Anyhow, I wanted to try a new hairstyle. I have a haircut appointment tomorrow with my stylist and I always a get regular "clean-cut" hair-do. I always keep it short. Nothing long at all. I need some help as if I should get a new hairstyle and that being a shaggy hairstyle. I have coarse, thick hair. And I've tried growing it and it curls up a lot. This picture here is very similar as to how my hair gets when it is long.. http://mensfashion.about.com/od/goominghair/ss/PEfall05hairmed_8.htm

My question is..can I actually pull off a shaggy hair style? I never tried it before..Oh and one thing..whenever I wash my hair, it just gets all frizzy and poofy. And if I grow my hair out, It'll be unruly. Please help me out with any suggestions..and I'm also male as well :)

Thanks for reading.

Hey MoreThanAlex!

It can be *very* hard to step out of the comfort zone when it comes to hair.  I think if you wanted to try the more 'unkept' look for hair, go for it -- you can always cut it off if you don't like it!

Also, try to find a photo of someone that has similar features as you.  What looks on a hair model might not look good on you.  I think many of us on LL found that out the hard way. ;)

As you grow your hair out, you will notice changes in your hair's curliness, (or lack of) volume, and texture.  The best thing to do is use a trial-and-error method on hair products.

The best thing to do, in my opinion, is go for the shag.  You'll never know if you don't try! :)

Having pictures to show the stylist of what you want to try will help them understand what "look" you want.  They should also be able to let you know if your hair will look good with that style.

Good luck!

Oooh, I think the shag is very sexy on men, I myself am attracted to man who is not clean cut looking.  It's so much more interesting and boasts confidence.  If frizz & poofing is a problem, try to control it with gel or oil, we here at LL all seem to lean toward natural products that don't harm precious hair, so pure aloe vera gel (can be found at any drug store, usually by lotions and body creams) and a natural oil like jojoba or sweet almond (health food store) would be in order.  ;)  And, as Panpeus said, if you don't like, cut it & pretend it never happened!

Hey all..thanks for the responses. It has really boosted my spirits in actually going with it. I just want to try something "new". And I am tired of having the same look for the past 5-6 years. However..I have an appointment in 40 minutes..let's see if everything turns out ok..thanks everyone again :)

Alright, I didn't cut my hair! Basically what my stylist did was clean up the unnecessary hair and basically thinned out my hair since I do have course/thick hair. I guess what he was trying to do was take off the weight off my hair and not cut off any length.  I am actually happy that I went with it, however, when I look in the mirror, I  am just a bit unhappy considering it might not turn out the way I would want it to. :( Oh well, I guess these are the phases you go through when you grow hair. My stylist even said to be patient and something I sort of lack on  :-/ Anyhow, let's see how this goes. I'll take pics and post after shots once my hair has grown if you guys are interested on my progress, that is :D

And thank you Panpeus, hopefully it does work out for me. I really don't want to go back to my original hairstyle =(

Hey, MTA!  Good for you for taking a chance on something new, I know that's not always easy to do, and it may feel funny for a while - way to go!  I'd love to see pics of your hair, current & progressive, and I'm sure everyone else would, too.  :)

I second that! For you've certainly come to the right place for support in growing your hair longer.

My boyfriend started growing his hair out shortly after we met  ;)  and is now sporting a sexy surfer shag. The bottom layer touches his shoulders now. Like yours, his hair is quite wavy.

I love the look of shaggy haircuts on men because it gives the impression that they like their hair longer & are secure enough that they don't have to adhere to the alpha-male jarhead flat top look. Shags are very surfer & very rock star. They're also the crucial in-between stage for people who are thinking about growing their hair very long.

Just hang in there. Patience is a virtue...and unfortunately, they don't make near enough of it for people like us who want our hair long now. But if you embrace it in stages, it might not seem so bad. Each month, there will be a whole new ½ inch of hair...so care for it the best way you know how.  ;)

Well, just a quick update everyone. I will be uploading pics quite soon on my hair's progress. As of now, my hair has grown just a bit. I have noticed that it has started to curl in the back and since my hair in the front is down, it's a bit curly. To my surprise, I had washed my hair 2 days ago with Schwarzkopf Professionsal: Bonacure 6c and this shampoo has aloe vera extracts as I have noticed and surprisingly my hair did not come out rough as I thought it would be. Just a quick question, I know you guys have listed products that natural oil but I just wanted to know since I want my hair flat, want volume and want it to be vibrant as well, what products should I be using? I just don't want my hair to be disgustingly oily as I do want my hair looking healthy. Any other comments are truly appreciated.

Once I get a camera, I'll take some shots :)

Thanks for reading everyone.

I'm not sure how to answer your question other than trial and error will let you know which products to use.
What are the natural characteristics of your hair?  Then find products that fill in the gaps based on your desired outcome.

Good Luck!

Alright everyone, just wanted to give you an update on the shaggyness. I'll have pics uploaded this week before and after. As of now, my hair has curled up, like soft curls. On the sides and the ends of my back hair has curled up. So far, my hair is nice and smooth. I try not to wash it every other day because it will literally poof up. I just want to keep it non-poofy, let the hair grow it's natural curls and to be manageable.

All in all, I'll have some exciting pics posted this week! It's not too much of a change but it's almost getting there :)
