Title: Another shampoo bar question
Post by PreciousLocks on Apr 5th, 2006 at 9:10pm
I have been using a shampoo bar for a couple of weeks now.  Even with lots of rinsing I am finding soap on the teeth of my combs....after my hair is dry.  Any suggestions?  I also think my hair is not as shiny - from the shampoo residue I suppose.

I am hoping to be able to use the shampoo bar for a 3 wk trip I will be taking soon -- trying to travel as light as possible and so would like to avoid bottles of liquid stuff.

Now that you mention it, I got some too. Then I found out that it was conditioner residue and not shampoo bar residue, because I quit shampoo and the stuff is still coming out.

If it's soap residue, you might want to follow each hairwash with an ACV rinse if you don't already do so. During my shampoo bar month, I did bar, ACV, then Suave C, heavy C.

I agree with Anais. If there is a lot of residue, clarifying with baking soda might help too.

But, I also agree with Anais about that it really sounds like you're just going through adjustment period. When you start using shampoo bars, you change your cleaning method from detergents and chemicals to soap. Soap reacts with old product residue pushing it out of your hair, and before the shampoo bars begin to really work, your hair must be free of all product residue. This process may take up to 6 weeks (depending on how often you wash). It's like very slow clarification. The adjustment period can be especially dramatic if your old products have contained cones.

Thanks!  I was hoping you two would check in on this topic  ;D
I will try clarifying with baking soda and see if that helps clear things up -- my hair just feels dirty near the scalp, but doesn't look it, on the up side I can do updo's with only one hairstick because it isn't so slippery :-/

I did the baking soda clarifying thing, followed by conditioning, rinsed well, then heavy jojoba oil/wrap my head in hot towels x 40 minutes, then shampoo bar wash and jojoba oil on ends.
Feels MUCH better!
Don't know about the white stuff on the comb yet.

The clarifying worked for a short while.  But my hair started to leave white gunk on my combs again and was feeling icky again even after it was just washed.  The only product I used on my hair beside the shampoo bar is jojoba oil, and that has been sporadic since starting the shampoo bar.  So I really think it is the shampoo bar residue on my combs. It was also much harder to de-tangle all the time.
Last night I decided my experiment with shampoo bars was done.  I did another baking soda clarify then did a C-COW-C.  It feels soooooo much better.
I wanted to settle the question of the shampoo bar before going on a long trip.  I was hoping the bar would work--makes packing much easier, but I just couldn't stand my hair like that for another month!  I felt I was constantly fighting to keep the icks down to a tolerable level.
