Title: East travel styles
Post by Hippychik on Apr 28th, 2006 at 11:46am
I'm a native Tennessean who is traveling to Texas for a week in May. I have a little past waist-length hair that is fairly straight, slippery and medium thickness.
I am looking for easy styles that travel well, especially in a hot climate. I LOVE my bun covers with barrettes, but they are all lacy and fancy and don't really go with jeans. Buns often make my head hurt if I wear them for long periods (and I usually hit the hairsticks on the car getting out LOL)
I do have a lot of bandannas.
any ideas or suggestions on stuff ro do with my hair?

Hey Hippychic!  Haven't seen you around much.

Hairstyles for hot weather......

1.  put hair in a bun and tie a scarf around the bun to hold it.

2.  long single braid, doubled back up and secured with a scrunchie or hair tie.

3.  two braids wrapped around the head.

4.  two side braids with a bun on each side (secured with hair pins).

5.  A crocheted bun cover that goes with jeans - demin or blue colored works well.

If im having a day where i can _not_ be bothered by my hair (pouring latex, for example  ::) ) - i always will take the body of my hair gathered together, twist it only once or twice, and lay the twist out in a very loose coil on the back of my head. You have to hold this with one hand while you rummage for bobby pins, but usually you only will need 4 or so to keep the whole thing flat against your head- one in each direction.  then i will take a bandana folded into a triangle and tie the ends underneath the flat spiral - bring down the top of the triangle to lay in the middle of the knot, and tie over it again so it is secure. put a few pins in your hair at the hairline/start of your bandana and you wont have any problems!

This way, if you go to sit down or take a short nap while traveling- you dont have a lump on the back of your head to maneuver around.

Take your hair with one hand gathered at the nape, take your other hand and wrap your hair around the hand at the nape however many times you need.  Pull your hand out and hold your bundle (which makes me think of a yarn butterfly) kind of in the middle. Use a scrunchie or tie in the middle of the bundle.  Makes a nice compact little "butterfly".   I saw this convenient style on an Amerindian but don't remember which tribe.   It's faster than braiding.

Also, two braids wrapped about your head is great too. (Think like Frieda Kahlo or a german peasant girl.)  You can even put a ribbon with the braid (while braiding) to give a nice touch.

(^_^)/

Schmooey, Thanks for the suggestion;  I will be traveling in a few days and am always at a loss for a comfortable hairstyle!
