Title: Henna on Blond Hair?
Post by zariva on Jun 4th, 2006 at 8:04pm
Hi Gals,
I was wondering if anyone here ever tried henna on blond hair, since I read in various sources that this might lead to unpredictable results.

Well, the deal’s this:
I’ve got about elbow-length hair that’s light blond at the tips from highlights coloring. I haven’t dyed it in over a year, though and naturally the hairline has grown out about 10 cm (apparently that’s about 4 inches?). Since I want to grow my hair long while keeping it as healthy as possible I’m hoping to be able to get away from dying it chemically and started to use “blond henna” to even out the difference in color between roots and tips, which has worked fine (by turning my tips darker, rather than lightening my roots).

But over the last few weeks this idea has formed in my mind to color my hair red, since I’m very pale by nature and a lot of people have told me I should be able to pull off looking like a natural red head. (Plus I have green eyes and I hope the red will bring them out more.
But the color I’m thinking if is not a dark, powerful red, but a very natural and light shade.

Is that possible to do with henna or will I have to go back to using chemical dye? Does anyone have experience with using henna on highlighted hair? Should blondes use henna at all?

Oh, and since I’m a somewhat clumsy, impatient person I’d prefer to use a finished product, like maybe something from Lush, rather than having to mix it up anew myself every time. (I’d just mess it up that way)
Really looking forward to your advice,
Rive

I've never used henna, so I can't give you any personal experience.  What I have read and heard from others, however, using the red henna over lighter hair, will give your hair red color.  Using body quality henna seems to give the best results.  I would suggest testing the henna on hair you have collected to ensure the henna process will give you the desired results.

Here's a link that might give you more information.

Hi there! I haven't henna'd either, but will probably do it soon. Anyway, I agree with what BB said about using body art quality henna and doing a test on a clump of shed hair. If you haven't looked at it already, the henna for hair site is a great resource and now that I'm getting serious about using henna on my chemically processed hair, I go there quite often.

Even if you're bad at mixes, you might want to consider getting body quality art henna and adding things to it like paprika, chamomile, or what have you. At least that way you'll know exactly what's inside the stuff you're using. But that's just a suggestion.  :)
