My name is BarbaraAnne, and I work as a moderator for HabboHotel, an online community game for kids. I've been doing communities for 12 years, but I am also a passionate hair comb collector.

I just received my first longlocks geisha stick, and I'm hooked! It's so gorgeous! I'm so thrilled! I have one beaded set and one special order geisha stick on layaway, and I can't wait to get them and start building my collection. :-)

It notes hair combs sold on ebay that, to my eye, were especially beautiful. It also has some pieces of my personal antique comb collection.

Another site I like for antique combs is The Tadema Gallery in London. http://www.tademagallery.com   They specialize in art nouveau jewelry. My favorite comb from that store is a Plique-a-jour Swallow Comb.

And my favorite comb artist of all time: Rene Lalique, the orchids.

Even with LC Tiffany and Faberge making combs, Lalique takes it with these. I guess for me, it's enough to know that he existed. I think my favorite combs are from Early Edo Japan and from Rene Lalique.

My, you certainly do have an interest in combs!  Gorgeous! Do you own many yourself?  Your avatar pic is quite nice with the Geisha stick, I'm sure your hair would also be stunning with any of the combs I've seen on you links!  I know Susan has quite a collection of antique combs - have you chatted with her about what she has?

My hair is just below shoulder length. It used to be in the middle of my back, but when I moved to south Georgia, everyone wore their hair in this updo.  I really liked it.

You gather your hair at the nape of your neck as if you were going to start a pony tail. Then you twist twice and put the "tail" on the top of your head, letting the curls fall on top. For the curls to fall nicely, your hair can't be too long, so I cut it.

I don't really wear my antiques, but maybe I could take some pics. Good idea. :-) I haven't had a chance to chat with Susan about antique combs yet. I'm sure I'll get to do that as my addiction to her hairsticks grows.  ;)

BUT today, I got heart palpitations. A Rene Lalique comb is up for auction at Sotheby's.  :o It will be sold in Hong Kong on Oct. 8. 2006. I posted about it on my blog.

I am wondering if Susan can make a reproduction of this. What blows my mind is how Lalique envisioned designs like this when all he had to look at was Victorian jewelry. I cannot believe one of these is actually coming to auction.

I also have yet to try that honey-avocado hair pack. I'm too busy spraying stuff on my roses to prevent black spot -- another obsession of mine.

I think when we get to middle age, we just go insane. There is no way to control our emotions anymore, so why even try!  :D

That comb is fantastic!  Such a naturalistic and simplistic design that has such class.  It will be interesting to see what it ultimately sells for.  If Susan can duplicate it, it would quite the accomplishment.

Susan hated it! LMAO.

I also received my first two hair stick sets with glass beads. The Harvest Blossom Sugar Stix and the Enchanted Woodland PearlStix. OMG! They are more gorgeous in person than in the pictures! So I asked Susan if any of the glass artists wanted to make matching earrings with a dangle. Think of it, I said to her, you could have 3x the email you have now! ;-)

Go away ;P she said. LMAO LMAO!!!!!!!!

At any rate, I am thrilled with them. I have a special order of the October Comes Geisha stick on the way, and I just put in a special order of the Twisted Cherry FoilStix on Layaway. :-) Display case will have to be bought soon. ;-)

ANYWAY.....

I did some posts on my blog. For the birds is about birds in hair combs all around the world from 1870 - 1920. Rats and Bats has my friend Myrna's ivory rat comb! And H Combs in Medieval France is something I wanted to do for a long time and finally got to it.

Hi Barbara, I am also a comb collector.  I have been trying to get my husband to do a photo of my hair all spread out with some of my combs on top, sort of like Susan's hairstick photo.  But I can't get him to take it.  He says to get one of my friends to do it.  Maybe one day.  

I love the photos.  I regularly check out the combs on ebay.  I had to stop buying for a while, though.  I bought three from a dealer in South America, but she only shipped two.  My favorite was missing.  Of course she refunded my money, but I wanted that comb!  

I am always looking for hairstyles to use for my combs.  I do the "spanish lady" one with the inverted ponytail and the comb in the middle often.  Sometimes I braid the tail, sometimes not.  Do you have any great hairstyles to share?   Welcome to the boards.

Oh wow, you look like you're wearing an antique kingfisher ornament! Beautiful! I love Chinese ornaments. Japanese, too.

That's fabulous that you also collect combs. :-) I look on ebay all the time. There are some nice things on there. I couldn't afford an ivory bird Chinese comb that went for $350. Then there was a shell and 14K gold comb that went for $300, which I didn't get. Now, there is an American Sterling silver one, also with a reserve, which I won't get either.

sigh.

And ye, some dealers are bad. And you could spend your entire life savings on collecting. The addiction is so bad.

Hmmm, hairstyles. I do this updo, which i have in my picture because my hair is just a little below shoulder length. Sometimes I do Heidi braids. I'll have to think about it. :-)
