Title: scissor happy hair dresser
Post by drammaw on Sep 20th, 2006 at 6:48am
I just had my hair cut about 6 inches up  to my waist. The hair dresser treated me like I was commiting a crime because I didn't want layers and wouldn't go shorter with my hair. Kinda made me second guess myself.
Has any one else met this kind of hair dressers? If so, how do you handle it?

Ooooo - careful - the mention of scissor-happy salon stylists can cause a riot around here!  ;D

Yes, many of us have suffered under those conditions.  It is difficult to find someone that will trim just what you want trimmed and not hack it all off and put it into layers - all which requires you to return in 6 weeks for more cutting.

Once I get my hair to a single length, my hubby is the only person who gets near my hair with a scissors.  He does a great job of trimming just what needs to be trimmed.

Ah yes, the bain of us long hairs .  I too only let hubby cut my hair. I would rather have dental work then go to a hair dresser ever again.

I avoid salon hairdressers like the plague! It's extremely rare to find one that will give you just a subtle, even trim without suggesting all kinds of crazy styles & colours. They're trying to earn a buck...

What they don't realize is that it's far better to just give the customer what they want rather than scaring them away forever. That's driving away business.

I'm friendly with two women who own hair salons, which is kind of cool because they tell my a few "inside" secrets. The one salon owner told me that while "doing time" working in salons before she got her own, she knew of hair dressers that would lie and tell long haired clients that their hair was damaged even though it really wasn't.  That was how the hair dressers would dupe their long haired clients into getting cuts.  I even believe this happend to me once, I'll never forget switching salons because the girl I usally went to was on maternity leave.  I was told that my hair was VERY damaged (which was a complete shock to me :o) and I let the new girl cut my hair, it took everything in me not to break down in tears however, I did once I left. I no longer go to hair salons but after that conversation, I've refused to let any hairdresser cut or trim my hair.

Not all hairdressers want to be scissor happy with longhairs though...  I met one at International Camp www.internationalcamp.co.uk (which was the best ego trip for my hair EVER!) who signed my T-shirt at the end with "I love your hair".

But hair-ego trip comments included: It's amazing (from a guy), I wish I could have hair that long (various people), and just plain WOW!!! :o  I also managed to have about half a dozen people watching me brush my hair (I had washed it that afternoon so it was its natural, beyond fingertips, poker-straight form) in the dinner queue before the masquerade ball, followed by one of my tentmates brushing the back ::) after asking me, of course...
