Title: Preserving Curls
Post by MurmuringMelodies on Oct 3rd, 2006 at 12:40am
My hair is pretty curly after it drys from a shower :). But after I comb it is only wavy  :'(. Is there anyway I can keep my hair's curl? :-?

Im.not.an.expert.but.i.dont.think.you.should.comb.
curly.hair.when.its.dry.just.wet.With.my.daughter.i.
comb.it.after.it.has.just.been.washed.and.then.allow
.it.to.dry.to.a.mass.of.curls.

However.if.you.do.not.want.to.comb.when.wet.you.
could.comb.when.60%dry.and.then.put.in.a.certain.amount.of.rollers.for.a.
few.hours.and.then.let.it.down.This.takes.time.but.
most.people.i.know.who.do.this.only.wash.their.hair.
once.a.week.

Another.option.is.to.go.to.bed.with.braids.which.are.
slightly.damp.or.you.could.try.damp.sock.curling.

I.would.not.reccommend.anything.with.heat.as.it.
encorages.frizz.Also.keep.combing.and.brushing.to.
a.once.a.week.minimum

I have the same problem...lots of curls when wet, but just waves when dry.  I don't comb other than with my fingers.  I think the weight of my hair just pulls the curls out.  I have found that if I sleep with my hair twisted into a bun on top of my head, I have curl in the morning.  Some people find that using aloe gel will help keep the curls, but it just makes my hair crinkly.

My husband's hair is curly and he uses gel to maintain the curl after a shower but, if you don't like gel, maybe you can try "scrunching" it.  Instead of combing it out when wet, only finger comb and then take your hands palm side up and continuously push up the ends of your towel dried hair in your hands as it air dries. You can also use a blow dryer with a diffuser attatchment on a low heat or cool setting for faster results.  Scrunching can help reactivate the curl pattern because by pushing it back up, your working against gravity which is pulling your hair down and straightening the curl. I learned this trick from a high school friend, I hope it works for you. :)

Also, using Ouidad products may help.

I'd suggest trying to comb out your hair during your final rinses, then gently pat your hair dry.  The "plopping" technique would also help to keep those lovely curls.  The less you handle the curls, the better they will look.
