Title: Measuring my hair
Post by Rainbow on Nov 25th, 2006 at 5:24am
Just wanted to get this of my chest.

Well i finally found my tape measure only to dicover that when i cut my hair to a bob it was very badly cut. I have some bits measuring 12 inches and some bits measuring 13 inches. I really dont want to cut just yet as my next trim is not till next year.

I am finding it so difficult to cut short hair by Christmas my hair will be touching my shoulders at last but it is all crooked.

I now am not sure where to measure from and plus if i do cut it sets me back nearly 2 months.

However i have come to terms with being patience and have decided to no longer measure till next year. I cannot tell its crooked unless i pull my hair and measure each bit exzactly so i think i will just leave it now.

Ok thanks for hearing me out

By the way for anyone growing out their hair (or thinking about it) once you have a good 4 inches of virgin hair like me you will be able to pull it back in an updo and it does not show much of the dye, thought that would cheer u up.

It is not uncommon for hair to grow out to show inconsistent lengths.  Some of that is due to the cut itself, but some of it is due to the hair growth patterns. I've found that the hair on parts of my head grow faster than others.  The very front (bangs/fringe) area and the lower back of my head grow faster than the top of my head.

When I was growing out my hair I also found it frustrating to have these different lengths, but with a bit of patience and some careful trimming, I did achieve my goal of hair that was all one length.  Hang in there and you will have the beautiful long hair you desire.

Very interesting, BB.  I guess maybe I now can understand why my last hairdresser looked at me in disbelief when I accused her of cutting my hair unevenly-and I stopped going to her because of it.  Oops.  I never thought of the growth rate being different in different areas.  Hmmm.

Yeah, I noticed that my sides grow the slowest and the top of my hair grows the fastest.  It's pretty weird.  Because my hair doesn't grow at the same rate it naturally forms a v pattern which I hate.  To get rid of the 'V' I have to trim the back only, leaving the sides alone.

Rainbow - all I can say is I feel your pain.  Oh, boy, do I ever feel it.........if I get through this first year I think I will be ok - but it could be a very difficult and somewhat not-so-pretty year.  Sigh...........

I'm new here, but I just read some of the posts and thought I would share a bit of my own hair growing history that might make a few people feel better.

First of all, I always had gorgeous, thick, dark brown hair as a little girl.  It was usually halfway down my back and my Mom always braided it or pulled it up for me.  I loved my hair all the way through high school.  Then, my first year of college, I became severely anorexic.  Anyone who has ever suffered through an eating disorder knows how devastating all that restriction is to your body.  My hair fell out in huge chunks and I became very sallow and sunken in.  My once glorious hair was a patchy, dry mess and I had to cut it to my ears to be able to cover the bald patches.  I did not overcome the eating disorder for about 5 or 6 years.  Throughout this time, unfortunately, I became a big fan of highlighting my hair to make it look fuller.  I did this at home, myself, with inexpensive, harsh, chemical-laden haircolor kits.

Fast-forward to 2005.  After a few years of taking much better care of my body, my hair, although thin and brittle, has grown back to shoulder length or just below.  On a whim, I decided to have my hairdresser (who was my close friend) cut my hair into a wedge bob just above my chin.  She had been encouraging me to let her do this for a year or more.  She did.  I hated it.  It wouldn't grow back!!!!!

Finally, just last year in March, I was in a much better, much less stressed lifestyle.  I decided that I was really going to try and take better care of my hair so that it would grow back in.  Despite what some people at work and elsewhere have told me, I DO NOT believe I am too old (I'm only 29 for God's sake), too tall, too thin, or too fine-haired to grow long hair!!!!!!   DON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE WHO TELLS YOU YOU CAN'T GROW YOUR HAIR LONG!!!!  That was the biggest setback to me.

Now, almost a year later, my hair is about 21" long.  The "patchy" spots have filled in due to my dedication to eating better, reducing my stress level through meditation, Pilates, and outdoor activities, and taking a high-quality multivitamin daily (I highly recommend Source of Life multivitamins by Nature's Own).  Other changes I have made are that I have thrown away my blowdryer, stopped using my beloved cheap, plastic Conair hairbrush on wet hair, and started giving my hair much more TLC.  I truly believe (especially since I have found this community of wonderful people) that I will reach my goal of 28" within about 1 more year.  If I don't, I will keep trying.

To all of you who might feel frustrated or that you have so far to go, don't give up!!!!  If my hair can recover and I can reach my goals, you can too.

Sorry if I bored anyone with my long rant, but I never know if what I say might help someone.  I hope it has.  We are in the right place.  I have already received a great deal of good advice from Fata, Bikerbraid, and Angel Spun.  People here really know all there is to know about hair!

Thanks to those who have given me advice and encouragement to those who are frustrated.  Someday we will all look back and remember these days (as we brush out our gorgeous, long, shiny hair).   ;)

Take care!!!

Tracy

Finally another Pilates fan!! I've been a follower of Joseph Pilates for 10 years and swear by his teachings.  THe man was so ahead of his time.   I believe it has kept me out of a wheelchair along with yoga, meditation, reiki and other implements.
I congradulate you on overcoming you eating disorder.  It is a life long battle and requires strength, tenacity and disapline.

We're here for you on your journey of growing your hair!  There's so much to learn and always feel free to ask questions or offer your thoughts. ;)

Amen, GTL! I don't think that you're too old at 29 to have long hair either. I myself am 27 and have very fine, thin hair and you know what? I'll grow it as long as I want because I can. I find the whole notion of age vs. hair length completely ridiculous. If your hair is willing to grow, then let it grow as long as it wishes or as long as you wish it to be. The world certainly has a high enough population of bald and short-haired people to compensate.
And thanx for the compliments. If any advice that I can offer helps somebody in the end, then I've done my job as a human being.  ;)

OH MY!  If someone thinks you are too old to have long hair in your late 20's, I cringe to think what they would say about my classic length hair when I am over 50!!  :o 8-) ;D

When I worked in an office in the 80's I had long hair and my boss said I should cut it or put it up.  I put it up and she liked the cute little buns I would make.  Thing is she wasn't going to sack me if I did not compile.  And being told your too old to grow your hair is just plain stuipid! I'm 40 now and I am just waiting for some one to give me that lecture...god help them! ;)

Can my hair still grow long at age 38?? Is  it still possible for me to have growth spurts?? I'm so worried that I ruined my hair..and now it will grow back, but maybe it won't grow long?? I just cut it right above my shoulders..

Hang in there!  I didn't start to grow out my hair this last time until I was in my 40's.  I still have growth spurts (and periods of slow growth).  My hair is classic length and currently holding at this length.  I don't feel my hair is "done growing", but being over 50, I don't expect fast growth either.  ;)  Your hair has plenty of time to grow out to be beautiful and long!

Hair keeps growing for awhile even after you're dead.  ;)  So no worries, Peachygirl. Just keep healthy habits and you'll be able to grow out even the worst damage.
