Title: Trisha's Tresses 2007
Post by Trisha on Jan 2nd, 2007 at 1:06pm

Tuesday 2 January

Hair
I'm continuing the routine of two no-wash days in between cleansing.  Seems to be working quite well.  I hope to eventually extend the time between wash days, but I'll not rush it.  Still using Tre Semme s+c, and performing vinegar rinses once a week, and oiling the ends on wash day.  My regular "style" has become a part down the middle with the sides held back with hair-friendly barrettes.

Other
Happy new year, eh?!  Like a lot of others here, I'm hoping 2007 is better (in a lot of ways) than 2006.

You know, I had a revelation of sorts while I was on break.  When I was younger, Christmas was my favorite holiday.  It was tops.  I was always very happy during the Christmas season--couldn't wait for it to arrive and was always sad to see it end.  But for the past few years my feelings have changed toward Christmas.  I almost always become unhappy...not cranky really, just...bristly about everything.  And this year was no different.  During my break I started thinking about the different holidays, comparing my feelings about them.  And I think I figured it out.  I realized that I now feel about Easter the way I used to feel about Christmas.  It must be because of my relationship with God, don't you think?  I mean, Christmas has gotten so commercialized it's sickening.  It's all about the money.  But Easter, despite the candy and basket sales, etc., is still about Jesus and what's important.  :-)  Kind of silly, I know, but I just wanted to share that with you.

A sweet revelation indeed, Trish.

It's a tie between Halloween and Christmas for me.  ;)

I definitely agree with you about the Christmas holiday it's no longer a favorite of mine either.

I see that you mentioned honey as one of your likes, what do you do with the honey?

I haven't used honey in quite a while, but earlier in 2006 I was adding it to my regular conditioner.  I wonder what would happen if I added it to shampoo??  Hmm....

Hair
Wash day; hair is parted on the side.  Just had a conversation with the student worker about greasy hair.  She was complaining about having to wash her hair every day because otherwise it looks terrible (so she says).  I explained to her about stripping away the natural oil and how our scalps produce more to compensate, etc.  I must have done a decent job of explaining because she said, "Makes sense!".  Now, whether she changes her routine is another matter.   ;)  All we can do is provide people with the information; we can't hold a gun to their head and force them to treat their hair nicely!

Other
My good friend, T, telephoned over the holiday break, terribly upset and crying so hard she could barely speak.  She had just been given the news that she must have a hysterectomy.  We have been friends since elementary school and I know her heart's desire has always been to become a wife and mother.  She was heartbroken about never being able to have a child.  I told her she could always adopt, and she said something about not being flesh and blood.  I said, "Flesh and blood doesn't make a family", and she admitted I was right.
Anyway, I spoke to T again last evening and she was doing much better.  She was calmer and her spirits were much higher.  I didn't mention the possibility of cancer because she's easily freaked out.  The surgery is scheduled for February 20, and I've assured her that I will help in any way I can.  You know, I certainly didn't relish going through the whole hysterectomy/ovarian cancer thing in 2003.  But I am so thankful that I am able to turn around and help others with my experience.

Hair
Nothing new to report, which is a good thing.

Life is about to get a whole lot more interesting...again.   :o
Hubby is scheduled for back surgery this Thursday, the 11th.  Two bad discs in his lower spine will be removed and replaced with "spacers".  Bone grafts and titanium screws will fuse everything together, hopefully giving him much needed pain relief (please Lord).  Hubby will have a hospital stay of 4-5 days, and I'm assuming there'll be some type of physical therapy afterwards to aid in his healing.  I'll be taking off work for about a week and a half to watch over my dearest.  I'll post more details after Thursday.

I'll be thinking of you both during hubby's surgery.  I've had the lower 1/3 of my spine fused and have the rods and screws too.  He may be pleasantly surprised to find out the pain after the surgery is actually less than what he has been dealing with before the surgery.  Getting around will be a bit slow at first, but it gets better every day.

If either of you have questions, feel free to ask me.

My mother also had this done a few years ago and her pain subsided as well although as Bikerbraid mentioned, it was slow at first.  I will be thinking of you both as well.

Hair
Nothing new to report on the hair front.  I desperately need to get an official measurement for the new year!

Finally back online after a, what?  --Two and a half week absence?  Sheesh.  I missed this place very much.

Thanks to all of you who have been keeping hubby and me in your thoughts and prayers.  Hubby's surgery took about 5 hours.  Two bad discs were removed and replaced with...I don't know what.  He also has rods and screws (titanium, no less) now for added support.  He's recuperating amazingly well, although there's still a long way to the finish line.  I'll tell you what...taking care of someone else 24 hours a day is HARD work (even if you do love them).  I have a newfound respect for caregivers everywhere.

I was able to do some work from my home computer, so I'm actually not behind in my tasks.  But I've still been very busy today.  I can't stay long; I just wanted to let y'all know that I'm back and I've missed everyone.   :)

Welcome back, Trish!

Glad to hear that your husband's surgery was successful. The road to full recovery may be a long one, but it's downhill. I think it's safe to say that the worst part is over.  ;)

Have fun playing mother/nursemaid while he heals up. haha  ;D  All the best.

I'm glad you stopped by to give us an update on hubby's progress.  You may be surprised at how quickly he will recover.  I know I was amazed at how quickly I was up and walking (not quickly, but hey - just being back on my feet was good!).   The pain subsides more every day.  The body has amazing healing qualities.

I will keep you both in my thoughts for a quick and complete recovery.

Thanks, gals, I appreciate your support!   :-*

Hair
No wash day.  Length of hair is down with sides held back with barettes (parted down the middle).  I'm planning on measuring the length this Thursday, which happens to be wash day and the first day of February.

Other
Classes are back in session here at Southeast.  The spring semester began while I was on family medical leave.  I'm having good success at keeping up with all of the requests for student data--it seems everyone wants to mail something to the students.  (They're busy studying--leave 'em alone!!)   :)
Yesterday was my first day back at the office.  Before I returned I wanted hubby to be able to do 3 things:  1.  take a shower by himself, 2.  dress himself completely, and 3.  get in and out of bed on his own.  By the end of last week he was able to accomplish all of those items, so I felt comfortable returning to work.  Luckily, I have an amazing boss who understands the need to be with family during such times.
I think hubby's next big step will be to wean himself off the pain medication and muscle relaxant, so that he can resume driving.  I know good and well he's getting cabin fever, but I don't want him to be in pain if it's not necessary.  Still, he's his own boss and must make that decision.
Even with our cold temperatures (and I mean COLD), I wore a skirt yesterday and a dress today.  The skirt was a long black velvet deal with a slit up one side; I wore a frilly white blouse with it, along with black leggings and black knee high socks.  I kept thinking of Angel because the whole ensemble had a decidedly Victorian look to it.   :)
Well, it's a little after one o'clock now, so it's back to work I go.

Hair
I couldn't wait for my scheduled wash day of tomorrow, so I did it this morning.  For some reason, my hair looked simply dreadful when I woke up, and I couldn't bear the thought of enduring one more day with it looking the way it did.  And since I washed a day early, I also measured a day early (with dear hubby's assistance).  28 inches!  It's been a good decade, I know, since my hair has been this long.   :)  Lovin' it!!

Other
When I drove to work this morning the temperature was 8 degrees.  EIGHT...that's, like, dangerously low.  Shouldn't there be a law against people having to leave their homes when it's this cold?!  For cripes' sake.  How I wish I could be a stay-at-home-wife.
Wore a skirt again today; this one is long, almost ankle length.  Underneath I'm staying warm with my leggings, knee high socks, and boots.

LOL! It's a bit chilly up here in MN too!  This weekend we probably will not get above 0.  You appreciate dressing in layers in this weather.  I hope to get out to the Ice Maze  and the Ice Sculptures for Winter Carnival this weekend.  I certainly won't have to worry about the ice melting!

Holy cow, BB, your 0 beats my 8!   ;D  We were much warmer here, with a morning temperature of 23.  Heat wave time!  I'm already anxious for Springtime to make an appearance.

Not much going on today.  I could in good conscience take off from work at noon today...but I won't.
I broke my skirts-only streak and wore pants today...only to wish I had worn a skirt.  *shrug*  I'm so fickle.   :P

Hair
Second no-wash day.  Hair pulled back in a low ponytail again with a Scuunci band and a pink silk scrunchie.  Tomorrow I'll wash and do a vinegar rinse.

Other
It's still cold here today, with temperatures hanging around the low twenties, and the little smattering of snow we received the other night is keeping the grass covered.
I'm wearing a nice dress today (aahh!); long sleeved, denim-cotton, full skirted.  It's one of my favourites but, since it's so warm, I can only wear it on very cold days.  I'm nice and cozy in my leggings, knee socks and tall boots.   :)  I feel so feminine and I move differently when wearing skirts. I thoroughly enjoy wearing dresses and skirts, and I intend to wear them more often this year--possibly even exclusively to pants.
And so, to that end, I just ordered two new skirts!   :)  Yesterday, I found some nice ones on clearance at the Blair site.  Since today is payday, I asked hubby last night if it would be all right to buy them.  I had done my homework--had a total price worked up for him, including shipping, and he said, "For two skirts?  That's a good price.  Sure!"  So when I got to work this morning I called in the order.  I'd include the link, but it's too long.  If y'all are interested, just go to www.blair.com and search for "challis skirt".  It's the print challis skirt;  I ordered one in multi paisley and the other in navy floral.  They should arrive in 7-10 business days.  I'm so excited!

Those are beautiful skirts Trisha!  I know how you feel, I love wearing dresses they're so simple to wear and they do make you feel very feminine just as long hair does. ;)

Monday 5 February 2007

Thanks La Diosa, I liked the look of them--and the price!   ;D  I hope they look good in person.  But, hey, for $10 a piece, nothing else I can wear them around the house.

Hair
Since the cold weather and dry artificial heat was causing some static in my hair, I have switched to using a dollop of Tre Semme conditioner as a leave-in rather than my usual jojoba oil.  Once Spring arrives I'll return to the jojoba oil.

Other
Mental note to self:  When the temperature drops below 32 degrees you must NOT wear skirts or dresses, no matter how badly you may want to!!!    >:(  Wait for Spring, girl!

It would be different if I could park right outside the building where I work and dash inside.  But I have a 7 minute walk from the parking lot and when the temps  are dangerously low, a lot can freeze off!!   ::)

I burned a spot on the underneath of my right arm on Saturday morning.   :(  I was chucking more wood into the ol' heating stove and I guess I got in a hurry.  As I was pulling my arm back out of the opening, I accidentally touched my arm to the red hot edge and SINGE went my flesh.  Yeesh...  I've been putting triple anti-bacterial ointment on the wound and keeping it covered with gauze.  I felt like an idiot because I've been around that wood stove for 45 years, literally my whole life, and had never hurt myself on it before.  Hubby said I was just overdue for it.   :)  He's always so helpful with those insights!   ;D

Over the weekend, hubby and I were in Wal Mart doing some shopping.  Suddenly, he nudged me, bringing my attention to a woman several yards away who had long, long hair.  She was blond, natural I think, and her tresses were about knee length.  --And she was wearing it down...it was so beautiful!   :)  I simply stared at her as we passed by the aisle where she had paused to look at something.  Then, later, when we got home, I thought to myself, "Dang it--why didn't you talk to her?!"  My first "real" long hair sighting, and I was too amazed to approach her!   ;D

Hair
Second no-wash day; hair is up in a low ponytail.  Using conditioner as a leave-in seems to be working well for my winter hair.

Other
The burn on my arm is pretty icky looking.  The whole burn area is about 2" in diameter and will take some time to heal completely.  I'm putting anti bacterial ointment on it 2-3 times a day and keeping it loosely covered with gauze.  It doesn't hurt or anything--I can smooth on the ointment without causing any pain.  But I'm keeping an eye out for infection.  You never know.

Temperatures in the area are hovering around the 30 degree mark (and that's the high, not the low temp).  Of course February is usually our worst winter month, and this year is no exception.  Can't wait for March.   :P

My weight is currently at 152 1/2, which makes 27 1/2 pounds I've lost.   8-)  Hubby and I are still doing a modified low carb lifestyle.  He's lost a total of 86 pounds so far.  I have recently added fruit back into my diet, but only certain types.

I've been using conditioner as a leave in instead of oil for about two weeks now, it does work really well.

27 1/2 pounds!!!!  Congratulations, you and hubby are on a roll!!!! :D

I wish you could send some of that will power my way.  I've been so lazy lately but I really need to exercise and develop some muscle tone to firm up, as my thirties aren't proving to be so kind.
My husband just installed cable in our exercise room only this morning, to work as a movitvator to get us in shape.  But by "us" I'm not sure if he really means "us" or just me. :-/

La Diosa, don't feel bad.  I need to exercise, too, not only to aid in my weight loss but simply to get into better shape.  At 45, I just don't think the better shape is going to happen on its own!   ;D  So when the weather warms up (I'm thinking March) I want to will start a walking plan.

The burn on my arm is looking better today.  Up until now, I had been dabbing on ointment and keeping it loosely covered with gauze.  But last night I slept with it uncovered, and today I'm attempting to go "naked", if you will, all day.  I'm periodically putting lotion on the area and being careful not to bump it on anything.

Angel, I guess having a better shape (i.e. being fit and healthy) NEVER happens without some effort from us, eh?  LOL

Hair
No-wash day, hair in a low ponytail.  Spotted an older lady (probably in her 70's or 80's) in Wally World yesterday afternoon who had long hair.  She had it looped and bunned and done up nicely, and I thought to myself, "...someday that'll be me."   :)

Other
So glad it's Friday.  I wish I could sit around doing nothing all weekend, but that ain't gonna happen.  I need to vacuum, do laundry, clean the bathroom, keep the wood stove fired up, cook the meals...ugh, I'm getting tired just thinking about it all.  Just do one thing at a time, girl, and the rest will wait patiently for you.   ;D

Hair
Didn't wash yesterday so I could wash today.  For some reason I always feel better starting out the week with clean hair.  --And I got a hair compliment this morning from a woman in another office.  Today, since my hair is freshly "laundered", I'm wearing it down around my face.  Usually I tuck my hair behind my ears to keep it out of my face.  But today I'm feeling rather saucy and the hair around the face reflects that mood.   8-)  Anyway, the woman went on and on about how long my hair has grown, and how pretty/shiny/healthy it looks.   ::)

Other
As if the hair compliment wasn't enough, not more than 5 minutes later I received a weight compliment from a totally different coworker!!  Woman #2 sees me and says, "Have you lost a lot of weight recently?  --You're looking very skinny!"   [smiley=laugh.gif]  Woo hoo, I'm having a great day!  LOL

Amazingly enough, I accomplished all of the weekend chores on my to do list.  I took my own advice, did one job at a time and, more importantly, rested in between chores.  I've found that pacing myself is the key to getting things done.

Our accountant finished our 2006 taxes last week and we'll be getting a nice amount of refunds from both federal and state.  Nothing huge and, of course, a lot of the money is already earmarked for various items.  Some of it will pay for the house insurance due in May.  Some of it will buy more propane (and maybe more firewood).  Some of it will buy a new television (have y'all priced new televisions lately?  Oy vey!!)  But I'm sort of hoping to use a little of it to buy some new clothes.  *fingers crossed*

My daughter did the sweetest thing...last night she came home with two heart shaped boxes of sugar free candy for hubby and I to share for Valentine's Day.  Everybody say "awwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!"   [smiley=engel017.gif]  She is a doll and I love her beyond words.

Wow, a hair and a weight compliment in one day!!  Way to go! :D

This past weekend all I wanted to do was clean, I enjoyed it so much.  I couldn't sit down, I just kept looking around in search of things that needed cleaning.  I'm not sure what it was, it must relax me or something.  Too bad I couldn't come give you a hand. :)

Okay, it's Valentine's Day--big deal.  I'm sorry, it's not that I dislike Valentine's Day.  It USED to be one of my favourites.  But, like a lot of other "holidays", February 14 has turned into just another money-spending frenzy.  People drop tons of money they seriously can't afford to spend, then complain later about how broke they are.  Flowers die, sugary treats are bad for you, and who needs another bloomin' stuffed teddy bear??   >:(  If you have to spend money to convince someone of your love, then there's something seriously wrong.

Title: Re: Trisha's Tresses 2007

Awww, Trish.

It's not about convincing someone of your love. It's just one more way to show it. Granted, you could do that any day of the year, and certainly should do it "just because." But if there's one more "official" excuse to do something thoughtful for somebody else, why the heck not?? Share the love, y'all.  ;)

Yes, flowers die. But they look cool when they're dead.  ;D  Sugary treats might be bad for you, but they're ohhh so good! And yeah, I see what you mean about teddy bears. I'm totally not a stuffed animal person. But that's what jewelry is for!  :D  So cheer up, sistah. Embrace the red, white and pink. lol

*great big Happy Heart Day hugz!*

Sorry Angel Spun, but I'm with Trisha on this one!  Although, I do agree that you can do creative things with dead flowers and make them look cool! :)

As far as I'm concerned, Valentines Day is about proving your love to somone.
Early in my realtionship with my husband, I felt that he'd better get me something for Valentines Day or else there would be trouble.  Now, I'd just feel silly putting him through that.  We've been together for almost 12 years and if I still need Valentines as proof of his love, then we have bigger issues.  Valentines Day being as consumer driven as it is, is so contradictory to what the day should be about.  The same flowers you can get any other day of the year, suddenly become so ridiculously expensive on Valentines Day!  It makes no sense.  Happy Valentines Day!!!

Title: Re: Trisha's Tresses 2007

I'll throw my 2 cents in on this.  I consider Valentine's Day a holiday for the young who are still developing their relationships.  It is a day to remind them to express their feelings to each other.  As someone that has been in a relationship with the same guy for 35 years, we don't need Valentine's Day to express our love for each other - we do it every day.  (However, I did give hubby a pair of hand knit mittens so his hands could be as warm as his heart!).

No wash day; hair in low ponytail.  Tomorrow should be wash day, but I may get lazy and wait for Saturday.  Oooo...I wonder if I could put it off until Monday even??  Hmm.  We'll see.

Hubby and I ended up eating at Cracker Barrel for supper last night on Valentine's Day.
See?  For all you folks who thought I was a big ol' Valentine's scrooge--nyah!   ;D

The burn mark on my wrist is looking great.  I'm remembering to put lotion on the area several times each day.  I believe the burn will leave a scar, but not more than one inch in length.

Another cold day here in southeast Missouri.  Although next week our temperatures are predicted to be in the 40s, 50s, and even 60s.   [smiley=laugh.gif]  We're already spotting quite a few fat robins in our yard.  Spring can't be far behind!

13 days until I start walking for exercise--can't wait!   8-)

That burn must have been really bad to leave a scar.  I'm happy to know that it's healing well though.

If you'll be getting warm weather next week I need to check my local extended forecast.  I would LOVE 60 degree wether right now!  Even if it's just the 40's I'll take it.  Anything will beat the heck out of this Antarctic like weather we've been having lately! WOOHOO! [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

(Freak #3 here, reporting for duty! LOL)

Hair
Didn't wash this morning; this is day #3.  My night piggy braids were so comfy that I redid them for work today.   :)  For one instant, I heard a negative voice in my head, saying something derogatory about a 45 year old woman wearing pigtails in public.  I shot that voice the bird and proceeded to braid my pigtails.   8-)  Everybody at the office thinks they're cute, so I guess I did the right thing.

Yet another cold temperature day here in southeast Missouri.  Although...!  I hear that today may be our last frigid day of winter (please God!).

Yep, the burn was a bad one--with help from descriptions found on the internet, I reckon it was a 2nd degree "minor" burn.  But apparently I kept the ointment and guaze on the wound for just the right amount of time, and continue to keep nice lotion on it.

Thank goodness it's Friday.  No special plans, I just need some home time.  The usual will be accomplished this weekend:  a little bit of cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, fueling up the car(s).

12 days until I start walking for exercise!!

Hair
Waited until yesterday (Sunday) to wash.  That was...4 days without washing.  My hair didn't look too bad, but I was very ready to have it clean.  I wouldn't like to make a habit of going 4 days or more without washing.

Other
I have received the 2 skirts I ordered from the Blair site.  I was looking for skirts that are inexpensive, skirts that would go well with my existing wardrobe, and that can funtion well in all seasons.  I must say I am not disappointed.  The challis rayon is not a thick material, but in the cold seasons I can wear leggings and boots with the skirts.  I will probably order from the Blair company again, although a different site now has my attention:  Bedford Fair.

Over the weekend I began the process of weeding from my closet the clothing that has become too large for me.  I've been hesitant to  do it until now since there's always the lingering fear of going insane and regaining the weight.  Rationally, of course, I know that's not going to happen.  Hubby and I are committed to this way of life and neither of us would willingly go back to the way we were (cue Barbara Streissand song).

As I mentioned in a thread in a different category here at LL, I've just had an epiphany.  I've just realized and acknowledged that my job cannot make me happy.  My job is NOT who I am...and I need to finally stop waiting for and expecting it (the job) to fulfill me.  Because that's never going to  happen.  It's just a job, for crying out loud!  How COULD it make me happy?   ::)  What a relief to finally have that bit of insight!

Wait a minute...am I having a mid life crisis?  Oh, I don't like that word "crisis".  How about a mid life review?  Yes, I prefer that term much better.   8-)  45 is a good age, I'm thinking, to pause and take stock of where one is and where one wants to go.  I'm a wise, mature woman; I can do this.   [smiley=happy.gif]

Hair
Washed this morning.  I could have gone another day without cleansing.  But I would have had to wear the tresses pulled back into a ponytail and I ddidn't relish the thought of having a headache by early afternoon.  I'm doing the hippy chick hair today; parted down the middle, hair hanging down around the face.   8-)

Well, the boy (as hubby and I refer to him--my stepson) has apparently begun the process of moving out.  He told his father a few days ago that he would be moving out "soon".  I use the word "apparently" because we're having to put together clues like a friggin' detective to know what's happening.  When we got up this morning, a lot of his effects were gone; things like his alarm clock, his smelly shower gel, his scrubby, his shaving kit, and his coffee pot were not in their usual spots.  So either he has begun the process, or we have a thief with no sense of value.   :)  Of course he does these things in the middle of the night so he doesn't have to deal with talking to us.  Whatever...grow a pair of stones, boy, and deal with reality.  We're simply happy he's going, and that's unnatural.  Parents should be a little sad when children move out.  But all we can feel is sweet relief!   ;)  We'll hopefully find out more over the weekend.

Anyway, the boy and his half brother are going to share a place.   ;D  Sorry, y'all won't understand why that's funny, and it would take me a library's worth of books to explain everything.  Suffice it to say, these 2 young men living together is a severe case of the blind (mis)leading the blind.  But, hey, we're old, uncool, ignorant parents and we don't know one blooming thing.   ;D  This should be an interesting train wreck to watch.

Here's wishing you tons of sunshine wherever you live!!   :)

Life is relatively quiet right now.  The bills from hubby's back surgery have been rolling in.  Thank God we have good health insurance, and the money to pay our portion.  The doctor's bill alone is $50,000 and (hope you're sitting down) the hospital bill is $183,000.   :o  Yes, that's one-hundred eighty-three THOUSAND dollars.  What on earth do people do who need this type of surgery but don't have medical insurance??   :-[

Hey - your hubby's surgery was cheap compared to my back surgery which was over $500,000!!  :o  and, yes, I did have insurance to cover every penny of it.  I'm glad you have insurance to cover this as well.  I'm amazed at medical costs.  Even my measly, 30 minute surgery to remove the hardware from my ankle, which was done as day surgery, is costing a bundle (again, thank goodness for insurance).  But, I also know that the fees that are charged are higher in order to help cover the costs of indigent services that are never paid for.

Hope your hubby is recovering well!

Hair
Wash day, wash day--yay!   :)  I love the way my hair looks and feels when it's freshly "laundered".  Tomorrow is payday, and I need to stock up on shampoo and conditioner.  I'm going to stick with Tre Semme a little while longer, and resist the urge to leap into the more expensive arms of Giovanni.

I can't believe it's already March.  For crying out loud!  That old saying "time stands still for no man" is a big understatement!!
Since it's March 1, I will begin my walking routine today after work.  I'd like to walk outside but I do have a treadmill to use in case of inclement weather.
Speaking of inclement weather, we're under a severe thunderstorm watch for most of the day.  I've heard that a county not too far from us is currently having a tornado warning.  Not sure which direction the bad storm is heading, but I'd bet money it's toward us.   :-?
Returning to healthy lifestyles...in addition to the walking regemine (sp?) I'll begin this evening, I've also today gone DECAF.   :o  Actually, I've had no bad effects, like headaches, because I had already cut back on the amount of caffeine I was ingesting in earlier days.  I was a little concerned about feeling lethargic, but no such thing has happened.  I only have to remember to use the right type of tea bag!!   ;D
I've also decided to cut out, or at least cut way back, on my use of Splenda (artificial sweetner).  Instead I will attempt to use Stevia, which is an all natural sweetner.  I want to be as healthy as I possibly can and now is the time to move in that direction.

So this caffeine-free thing has been pretty easy thus far.  No headaches, no lethargy, no ill effects whatsoever.  Actually?  I feel better!  I slept very soundly last night.  I've noticed my mood is more even.  I've also noticed fewer hot flashes.
Used my treadmill last night for the first time in months.  The poor thing was covererd in dust!   :-[  I love walking out of doors, but Missouri's spring weather can be unstable, so it's nice to have the treadmill as a backup.
I've set the last Monday in March, the 26th, as the first lunch meeting for a new group I'm trying to get started.  The group will consist of women whose lives have been touched by cancer in some way.  Either they've had it themselves (or have it currently), or their family/friends have it, etc.  Any woman, really, who is connected to the university where I/we work.  I want this to be a support group of sorts, where women can gather and talk about everything from diagnosis to life after remission.  I just want to help others if I'm able.

Time to have my ca125 blood test done.  I should have had the test done in January but, once again, I allowed life to get in my way.  So think of me this afternoon while I'm having blood drawn.   :(  Oh well, it's all right.  I'm only a LITTLE late!   :)

Hair
2nd day hair.  Length is in a french twist held by a giant claw clip--very comfy.  It's a very sophisticated look, too.  I bought the giant claw clips (2) yesterday at the Dollar General store (had to buy some conditioner).  The clips are 2 for $1; I chose a faux tortoise shell and a clear one.

Other
Had my blood drawn yesterday for the CA-125 test and now I await the results.  Shouldn't take more than a couple of days for the nurse to telephone with the outcome.  It's not that I expect the cancer to return but, until I hear the result of the test, I always mentally hold my breath for the "everything's okay".   :)
Hubby gets to begin light physical therapy now, as okayed by his doctor.  He'll make those arrangements this afternoon.  Where the surgery is concerned, hubby is making great progress.  But since after coming home from surgery, hubby has developed a tremor in both hands.   :(  His general practioner says it could be a result from the muscle relaxers (he advised hubby to stop taking those, which he did), or something with the thyroid.  Some tests were run for thyroid disease, but we don't have the results yet.  Doc asked if hubby had a history of Parkinson's disease in the family, but hubby said no.  --Although SOMEBODY has to be the first one so that there can be a family history.  I mean, look at me--nobody else in my family has or had ovarian cancer.  So we're praying like crazy that this is not Parkinson's...only time will tell.  Oy vey, it's always something!   :o

I will keep you in my thoughts in hope that the "everything's OK" call comes quickly.

I had tremors from the muscle relaxers too.  Scarey until you know what is causing it and I DO have Parkinson's in my family history.  It took a couple of days after I quit taking the drugs for the tremors to go away.  Hopefully your hubby's will as well.  Glad to hear he is headed for his PT.  It will be a slow but steady progress - make sure he does his exercises!!  :D

Hair
3rd day hair (2nd no-wash day); length is in a low ponytail.  I would have worn a giant claw clip (French Twist) again today, but didn't want to make the back of my head sore.  There's always tomorrow.   :)

Other
The result of my CA125 test is a 6.4--Normal is any number between 0 and 30.  So yay-rah for me!   8-)  Thanks, all, for the continued prayers.
It's been almost one week since hubby stopped taking the muscle relaxers, but he still has the tremors.  Last night he was shaking badly all over, from head to foot.  That episode lasted for about, I don't know...maybe 20-30 minutes.  But, then, he had been taking those pills since January.  Maybe the longer one takes them, the longer they take to leave the body?  *sigh*
Daughter had a job interview in the Memphis area yesterday, and it sounds promising.  She should know by Friday if she got the job.   :)

Good for you, Trish!  :)  I'll continue to pray for your husband. I've never taken any kind of muscle relaxers, but I know that some medications can take a long time to leave your system. Their effects can last for years.  :P

Hair
Still haven't washed my hair (since Monday).  Fingers crossed that I can last until next Monday morning!  Length is "clipped" into a french twist.  By golly, this could be my every-day-style...it's simple and terribly comfy.  But first the back of my head must become accustomed to the claws of the clip.  So, at first, I'll be wearing this style every other day.

Other
Dear daughter had a very promising interview on Tuesday at a 7-doctor OB GYN practice somewhere in Memphis, TN.  She had a 2nd interview, by telephone, this morning, and should know by tomorrow if the job is hers.  She's trying not to get too excited, but I have a really good feeling about it.

Hubby begins physical therapy tomorrow afternoon.  He's already making noises about thinking he doesn't need PT, but everyone is telling him "GO!  --it will be good for you!!"  And so, he'll go.   ;D  Also in my unprofessional estimation, the tremors in hubby's hands seem to have lessened.  I was trying to pay close attention last night at supper, but didn't want him to notice me staring.  Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part but I honestly think the shaking is gradually subsiding.

I have NOT been walking every evening as planned.  I get home from work and supper must be taken care of, and whatever other items that need to be addressed, etc., and by the time I remember I'm supposed to be walking it's too late and I'm too tired.  :(  I know it takes a while (what is it--30 days?) to form a new habit, and so I'll simply keep at it.  Maybe I need to write myself a reminder note!   ;D

Other
I'm trying now to make some changes in my life that have a positive impact on Mother Earth (i.e. trying to use less paper, trying to reuse whatever I can).  A couple of months ago hubby and I switched our house from incandescent (sp?) to fluroscent bulbs.  I figure if there are some changes that I, as an individual, can make to help, then I should do so.  Sad to say, for the past few years we've been really bad about using paper plates for every meal.   :-/  But the silverware and cookware have to be washed anyway, so what's a few more pieces (plates) to wash?  Yeah, definitely some changes to be made...  8-)

How old is your husband?  The reason I ask is, about 3 years ago my husband developed benign essential tremors.  They are not Parkinson's, but are caused by an absence of dopamine in the brain as Parkinson's is.

Essential tremors are common in those over 60.  They are the reason old people shake.  They are not common in men who are 40.  His have gradually worsened, but are still more of a nuisance than a handicap.  Hopefully by the time they get too bad someone will have come up with a more effective treatment than what he has now.

texian.traveler, my hubby is 46.   :(  I guess I'm still hoping that these tremors are a result of one or both of the pain meds he was taking post-surgery.  --Or even a thyroid problem would be good at this point!  He's scheduled to see his doctor this Friday at which time the results of some tests should be make known.  But who knows what's going on?  --Only God and He ain't talking.  I'm sorry to hear your hubby has essential tremors.  I can only imagine how aggravating they must be to live with.  I wish you both the best in coping with this.

I purchased a supply of plain white cloth napkins to use at meals instead of paper towels or paper napkins.
I purchased a supply of 11-ounce plastic tumblers to replace our disposable bathroom cups (We will probably keep disposable cups on hand for guests).
I've been using china plates instead of paper.
I've also been trying to utilize natural sunlight at home instead of flicking on lights every couple of minutes.

Washed this morning--wanted fresh hair for a meeting I had to attend.  I'm fighting the urge to run to the health food store to buy either Aubrey Organics or Kiss My Face s+c, but don't know if I can hold out much longer!   ;D  I'm kind of waiting to find out if my daughter gets a job soon in the Memphis area.  If she does, then I'm sending the Tre Semme products with her and then, naturally, I'll have to buy replacement products!   8-)  Or I could give in to temptation and just buy the dang stuff now.  *sigh*  Decisions, decisions...

I'm going to do all I can to help the environment, but I'm not going to get all rabid about it.  I'm not going to panic if somebody wants to use a paper towl to wipe their chins instead of a cloth napkin.  And I'm not gong to knock the paper plate out of their hands and replace it with a china one.  I will do my part, but I do not want to be consumed with it.

Beware the ides of March!! bwahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!

Hair
Back to my no-wash schedule after washing out of turn, so to speak, yesterday.  I'll probably wait 'til the weekend to wash again.  And...I caved a little yesterday, in the shampoo arena.  After work I made a little visit to the health food store to check out the shampoo/conditioner section.  I badly wanted to buy some Aubrey Organics s+c, but I simply could not bring myself to shell out the money right then and there.  So I compromised, purchasing a 2 oz. bottle of the chamomile (i think) shampoo.  This way, it suited my immediate budget and the bottle is small enough that I won't feel bad if I happen to dislike the product.  Somehow, though, I doubt I will hate it.   ::)

Last week I received an email from a lady who had stumbled across my name/address on a genealogy site.  She gave some preliminary information, which led me to reply with some information of my own.  We're still not sure, but think there's a possibility of us being "cousins".   :)  I'm hoping hard for this to be true, because she seems to have a lot more data about a particular line than I do.  At the very least, she seems a tremendously nice lady with whom I would like to continue discussions.  Of course, all of this has thrown me back into ancestor-search mode.   8-)  I feel another trip to the church cemetery coming on!  LOL

Wash day.  This was the second washing using Aubrey Organics Camomile Luxurious Volumizing Shampoo.  --Don't like it.  The product itself is fine; cleans well, doesn't seem to dry out my hair.  But I've finally come to conclusion that I HATE the smell of chamomile.  Love it in tea; HATE it in my hair care products.   :(  And as wonderfully "organic" as their products are, they're out of my price limit.  So I will not be purchasing them again.

My friend, T, had surgery yesterday of a feminine nature--'nuff said.  I was filling in for the secretary, and couldn't see her until after work.  She was in a LOT of pain, poor thing.  For whatever reason, her morphine pump hadn't been started immediately after surgery...they waited until she was in a room.  Well, by that time her pain level was already at a 10, and the morphine was, unsuccessfully, trying to play catch-up.  *sigh*  I had to leave around 7:15pm and I sure hope she got some relief last night.

One of my husband's uncles passed away Sunday night, and the viewing is tonight from 4-8pm.  Hubby wasn't especially close to this guy but, out of respect, we'll be at the viewing tonight (for a little while).  Then we'll visit with my friend in hospital.

Tomorrow is the official start of Spring.   :)  I still have not been able to start and maintain a successcul walking program, and I know it ain't gonna happen this week either.   :P  I guess when it's supposed to happen I'll find the time and the energy!

My husband's initial "diagnosis" for the hand tremors is benign essential tremors.  At least I assume that's what the doctor said, since I wasn't there in person.  Hubby related that the doctor said "...benign something-or-other".  He may still end up seeing a specialist, who knows.

My newfound "cousin" sent me this morning a gedcom file with several names of our ancestors.   :)  It will take plenty of time to wade through them.  At this point, neither of us is certain of being able to connect our lineage.  But I believe we're both pretty sure of being related somehow, someway.

I have a comment to make about shopping at Wal Mart...but I've decided to wait 24 hours to see how I feel tomorrow.

I just purchased a bookcase from Walmart just last week.  I know about their products coming from overseas and the conditions of the workers, but the bookcase was 50% cheaper than the same ones I saw elsewhere.  I'm pretty conflicted about the whole Walmart thing. :-/  What are your thoughts?

What made you decide to do an ancestor search?
My dads cousin from his mothers side contacted us last year.  My dads mother died when he was very young so no one knew much about her family.  Anyway, she wants to meet and the whole bit but I'm pretty indifferent, I'm not quite sure why.  Although, it was interesting to get some info about that side of the family though.

Okay, I've waited my self-imposed 24 hours and this topic is still heavy on my mind.  So I'm going to write about it.

This thing I'm going to write about Wal Mart stems from another thread at this site.  I mentioned finding a certain product at Wal Mart, which prompted a few members to express their dislike of that store.

First let me say that I am not offended by their remarks.  Well, maybe I'm a leeeetle offended, otherwise I guess I wouldn't be writing this.   :)  But none of it was personal, or directed towards me; I understand this.  They were expressing an opinion, something to which we are all entitled.  It should be understood that the following piece is likewise not intended to offend anyone, or to pick a fight.  I simply feel the need to defend my position, and possibly the position of a few others who are in the same (small) boat as I.  That being said...

I shop at Wal Mart.

Yes, I know Wal Mart is an evil giant that has destroyed countless small businesses in countless towns across this nation.  And now they've set their sights on Europe, I believe.  I understand that by spending money at this store I am, of sorts, an "enabler".  I know about the sweat shops, and the unfair working conditions, and the whole crappy situation in general.  To those of you who choose to shop elsewhere and, in essence, boycott Wal Mart I applaud your efforts.  I wish I could do the same.  But I cannot afford that luxury.  You see, my husband and I must make ends meet on one income--mine.  He has been unable to work for the last three years, due to a physical limitation.  We are still trying to obtain disability benefits and, so, yes, we exist on my meager salary.  That means I must do the best for my family, within severe budget restrictions, and shop as frugally as I can.  Unfortunately, for us, that means shopping at Wal Mart.  I don't like it, but I don't have a choice.

So to all of you who can afford to choose, keep shopping elsewhere.  I applaud your efforts and, if possible, will join you in the future.  However, if the money situation does not ever improve for me and my family, I cannot afford to feel guilty for shopping at Wal Mart.
(end of discourse)

I've been doing family research, on and off, for...oh, gosh, it must be at least 10 years now.  It's funny, but I don't remember exactly why I started.  I just have this needful desire to know where I come from.  I mean, I know my granny's people were German.  It's her mother, my great-grandmother, that I'm most interested in at this point.  I have a photograph of her, aged approx. 30-40 yrs, sitting on a sunny porch in her dress and apron, holding a kitten in each hand, and I know her name was Mollie.  I know she was 19 when she gave birth to my grandmother, and I know her husband was a farmer.

But I want to know more...was she happy?  Was she born in Germany or America?  Did she migrate with her parents?  Were they farmers?  So many questions... I also have to accept the fact that I may never know an answer to any of these.  Unfortunately she was born at a time when birth, marriage, and death certificates were not completed with any regularity.

So, La Diosa, if you want my opinion (I'm gonna give it to you whether you want it
or not!   ;D  ), meet with your "cousin".  Find out everything you can about your grandmother.  Even if you're not interested in genealogy, her medical history could be of importance to you later on.  And who knows?  Once you find out about your grandmother, you may recognize yourself in those genes.   ;)  *hugs*

lol We don't hate you, Trish. *hugzzzz*

Actually, I have a guilty little Wal*Mart secret of my own: I get my prescription meds there.  :o  :-X  Granted, that's only because the pharmacy where I usually shop doesn't offer my prescription or even its generic counterpart, so off to Wally World I go.  :(  And they're still printing my married name (which I've not used in over 3 years now) on the receipts to mention.  >:(

Fortunately, it's only a quarterly trip now.

Well, if this person turns out to be your cousin, would they have this information about your great grandmother or know anyone who can perhaps answer your questions?

Thanks for your advice Trisha! ;D  Maybe I will find out more.  I did get the names of my great grandparents from her and she told me a little about what they were like and what they looked like. I guess it could be interesting to find out more.  She gave me the phone number (which I lost, so I'll have to get it again) of another cousin who apparently knows everything about our family.  She's very old though so I guess I should do it because I may regret it later if I don't.  I really regret not knowing to ask my mothers father (who was very much like a father to me growing up) more about his life which strikes me as very interesting now.  He was bi racial (which of course was not a common thing back then) and spent his childhood in boarding school.  I would've loved to know more about that stuff, the dirt so to speak. :P

I shop at Walmart too... :-/
See thats the thing about Walmart.  Even if you do have the extra cash, the price gap is too large to ignore in my opinion.  I mean, there aren't very many people in this country who can afford to pay hundreds of dollars more for products just out of principal.  The bookcase I purchased was 42.00.  I saw it elsewhere for 110.00, thats a big difference.  I purchased a flat screen tv last summer from Walmart for 100.00 less than it was selling in other stores.  I know it's morally wrong I suppose, but again it's hard for most people to pass up savings to that degree.

I've washed 2 days in a row; yesterday because it was time, and today because I was meeting a group of ladies for lunch.  It's time to buy a new straw hat to protect my hair (and my face) while I cut the grass.

Other
The "meeting" at lunch today is, I hope, the beginning of a new club, so to speak.  It's for women who are connected to the university in some way, who have or had cancer.  A group of survivors, if you will, to encourage and support one another.  There were only 4 of us today but as word spreads I'm hopeful more will join us.  I've never started anything like this before, but it feels so good that I'm wondering why I didn't do it sooner?!   :)

Well, unfortunately, no, I don't think she has that kind of information about my great-grandmother.  But I'm not sure--we've only been in touch for a short while, so she may have more than I think she does.  I'm convinced in my heart, though, that she and I come from the same family.  I hope it's not just wishful thinking on my part...I don't believe it is, though.  A little more digging on my part and we should be able to connect the dots.   ;)

No wash day.  For today's style I redid my night braids (starting close behind each ear), secured each end, then pulled each braid to the back of my neck and secured them together with my faux leopard print clip.  Rather cute, if I do say so myself.   :)

Other
An exciting, astounding leap forward in my genealogy research:  I now know the names of my family from my great-great grandmother's line.   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]  The process went something like this...

At the county archive center I was able to find the name of one of my great-grandmother, Mollie's, sisters (Julia).  I then was lucky enough to find online a death certificate for Julia, which lists the names of her parents, Peter and Caroline.  --Nice names, aren't they?   :)  I never knew their names before.  Then I checked at the Roots Web site (www.rootsweb.com) for *their* names and, lo and behold, found a distant relative had posted a wonderfully extensive family history on the Bedford line, the surname of my great-great grandmother.  This line goes back to the mid 1600's!!   :o  I have sent an email to the new-found "cousin" and hope she writes me back soon.  *fingers crossed*   There are still a lot of lines to research, though, and so I have plenty to keep me busy for years to come.

My daughter has a job!   :)  As of yesterday she is now gainfully employed at the 7-doctor OB GYN clinic in Menphis (one of these days I'll learn the name of the clinic).  Yay-rah for her!   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]  So she'll be gone within 2 weeks, as soon as she finds an apartment (which her boyfriend is helping her do).  After training, she'll most likely be the front receptionist for the office, answering calls and such.  As most mothers would be, I am joyful for her yet a little sad for me.   :-?  This is a tremendous opportunity for her; new town, new job, new friends, new life.  What causes me a little sadness is the fact of not getting to see her sweet face each and every day.  Ah well, Memphis is only 3 1/2 hours away.  All the more reason for a road trip!   ;)

So the stepson has moved out.  The daughter is moving out.  All that's left is the brother-in-law, and he's only around about 50% of the time.   8-)  Life is good.

Still researching family history, back to working on the line of my great-grandfather (the Niedlings).  I'd like to make another trip to the county archive center tomorrow, but don't know if time will permit.

Not much new in the land of Trisha's tresses.  Still using TreSemme shampoo and conditioner.  Still using the conditioner on my ends as an after-wash leave-in.  I have jojoba oil at the ready, though, should the conditioner prove too heavy for summertime.  I haven't measured in a while and have no intention to do so until May or June.

My daughter is now a Memphis-onian, or whatever the term is.   :)  She moved most of her things this past weekend, and began her new job this morning (Monday).  This is not the first time she's been out on her own; in fact, this is #3.  Yet, I find myself peeking in her now vacant bedroom, shuffling away and sighing heavily.   :-/  Believe me, it's not that I'm sad...I'm estatic that she's embarked on an exciting new adventure.  --And I'm happy to have the extra space in the bathroom closet.   ;D  I suppose it's simply a normal motherly response.   8-)  I had a feeling that 2007 would bring about great change for everyone and I was not wrong.

Hair
No-wash day.  Lately I've been thinking about thinning hair.  After chemo in 2003 I was lucky to have a full head of hair grow back.  But there is a small patch of thinner hair at the front of my hairline, a little to the right side of my head.  Plus I've heard that some women's hair thins as they go through menopause.  Now the small patch is not visible because of the way I wear my hair.  But what I've been thinking about is this:  if my hair grew terribly thin--I mean to where my scalp showed through--would I keep my long hair, or would I cut it off?  I hope I don't have to make that decision any time soon.  Or ever.   :P

Other
My daughter's first day at her new job went very well.  She said the clinic has a 10-line telephone system.  At her old job they had only 3 lines!   ;D  Luckily she's not the only person answering calls.

This cold weather snap we've been in for over a week now has delayed the hummingbirds from returning to our area.   :(  If memory serves, by this time last year I had already been feeding the little dah-lings for a few weeks.  Oh well...they know when it's time.

Hopefully, you won't have to worry about your hair thinning any further but if it does I wouldn't give up hope.  There are products out there like womens Rogain, that can be used for thinning hair.  You'll be fine. ;)

Thanks *hugs* and, yeah, I know I'll be fine.  It's just one of those errant thoughts that plow through my mind every now and then.   ;D  I think if I  started going bald I would just pull a Sinead O'Conner and be done with it.  I've been bald once, by golly, and I could do it again!   8-)

Hubby had a second follow-up visit with his doctor/surgeon this morning, and everything looks great.  I think he's actually a little ahead of schedule as far as healing is concerned.  Hubby also broached the subject of next dealing with the bad discs in his neck area (i.e. another surgery), as in getting it done THIS year while the deductibles are already paid, and the doctor agreed.  So an MRI will be scheduled soon, and we'll see what happens.  Neither one of us is looking forward to another surgery, either as a participant or a caretaker, but we agree that NOW is the time to do it.

Our telephone lines are down at the university today.   :(   :)  Something about a water main break, blah, blah, blah.  This is one instance where having a cell phone would certainly come in handy (no, I don't have one).  We've had cell phones in the past but decided about 3 years ago that we could survive without that luxury.  But lately...I don't know.  I keep going back and forth about it...do I NEED one, or do I only WANT one?  But as I said, today I could very much use one.

hehehe Trish. I don't have a cell phone right now and it's killing me! No one can get ahold of me in an emergency, and that's not cool at all. Plus, I'm in sort of a long-distance relationship now, so my guy and I rely on cell phones to help us stay in touch. Not having one really sux!  :(

Hope the lines get back up and running soon. And good luck with your husband's MRI. I know that back and neck surgeries can be scary as heck.

Most of us who were affected by yesterday's telephone outtage STILL don't have service.  At least our department's main line is active so, if need be, we can be reached.  Personally, I don't expect service to be 100% restored until tomorrow.

Spoke with my daughter last night.  She's still happy with the job, though she remarked that the 10-line phone system is "kicking my butt".   ;D  She may come home this weekend for some maintenance on her car, but as of last night she wasn't certain.  I know she's been gone for only one week, but Mamma's ready for a visit!   ::)  Of course, I didn't tell her that--no pressure.   ;)

hehe Trish. I can sympathize with your daughter in feeling overwhelmed by the 10-line. I operate an 8-line at my current job and had absolutely no front office/switchboard experience prior to it. Needless to say, it was pretty daunting when I first started. 2 years later it can still be pretty crazy at times, but you do get used to it. I have practically everyone's extensions memorized.  ;D

I have on western boots today.  This will be the absolute last time I wear them.  After today they're going to Good Will.  Don't get me wrong:  I love western boots.  I love the way they look on me and I love the way they look on others.  But this particular pair have NEVER fitted properly.  I've owned them for...oh, about 6 years now.  And I've probably worn them a total of 12 times over that period.  Simply put, they're just darned uncomfortable.  It's ridiculous for me to hang onto something that hurts (shoes, in this instance).  So out they go.  In fact, that's my new short term goal, to rid my closet of ill-fitting shoes.   >:(

Daughter did indeed come home over the weekend.  She spent Friday night with us (said it was the first good night's sleep she's had since moving!   ;D  ) and, after spending some time with friends, headed back to Memphis Saturday night.  As always, it was reviving to see her smiling face.   :)

Hair
Today shouldn't have been a wash-day for me, but I did it anyhow.  Sometimes I can go 4 days or longer without washing and my hair looks fine (to me).  But this was one of those times when I simply could not bear the look of greasy hair.  *shrug*  I obey the commands of my hair; what can I say?!   ;D
I'm having an urge to get my hair trimmed.   :-?  Not sure where that's coming from.  I mean, I don't have any splits ends or damage of any kind.  Originally, I wanted to make waist length before trimming.  Scissors (or razors or anything else) haven't touched my hair in 2 years.  But all of a sudden, it's heavy on my mind.  So I don't know.... Now the good thing is that I would not have to set foot in a salon.  No offense to anyone, anywhere, but I HATE styling salons.  Even when I had short hair, I HATED going.  Anyway, since my hair is straight, my hubby can trim it straight across like he used to years ago.  I wouldn't need to lose much; just like, maybe 1/4 - 1/2 inch...maybe at the most a whole inch.  Still that would put me back either right at, or just a little above BSL.  Basically I'd be starting over again from where I was in October of last year.   :-/   I think if the urge is still present over the weekend I'll go ahead and do it.

Other
A co-worker and I have started walking at noon.  He and I are good buddies and very comfortable with each other (otherwise I wouldn't be walking with him!).   :)  It's nice to get outside and breathe in the fresh air.  I'm sure it helps my attitude, also, to get the heck out of my office for a while!   ;D

Washed today instead of waiting for Friday.  It just looked like it needed a sudsing.  Probably because I'm sweating a little more lately.

Other
...And I'm sweating a little more lately because a coworker and I have been walking at noon.   :)  He figures we walk about 2 miles (though I'm not convinced of his figures).  At any rate, the route we've chosen takes us anywhere from 30-45 minutes, depending upon how old we feel that day.   ;D  --Today we felt pretty dang old!  Oh, and yes, I do wear a hat during our walks to (1) protect my face from the sun, and (2) protect my hair from the sun.  I'm also slathering on sunscreen every morning to help protect my arms and neck.  I'm trying to be a good girl...at least in THAT respect.   8-)

I think (and it's a pretty big "maybe") I may have found a line of my great-grandmother's people extending back to around 1560.  As usual, I find myself waiting on a return email from the owner of the list.  I'm trying to be patient; this guy lives in France, and I know people have lives outside of the genealogy world  :o  ...but it's difficult.  I don't mind waiting, as long as he eventually replies.  If he doesn't, though, I'll have to take the long road to actual documentation that these are, indeed, my ancestors.

I'm still waiting for the guy in France to email me back regarding family history.  I need to get back over to the Archive Center.
Work has been terribly slow of late, but I'm not complaining.  The free time allows me to accomplish internet research for the genealogy.

Wow! 1560:o  You're going really far back!  I'm a bit confused though.  I was under the impression that the records archive only had local information but apparently it doesn't.  How does the process  work? Do you know if all cities have genealogy archives?

Sorry, dear, I haven't been clearly documenting my findings.

1.  The 2 different family lines I have spoken of in this journal were NOT found at the local Archive Center.  Both of them I discovered at online websites I frequent while researching.
Here are two of the best sites that I use almost every day.
http://www.rootsweb.com
and
http://www.familysearch.org
Also, since a lot of my family were born and or died in Missouri, this site has also been a huge help:  http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/ordb.asp

2.  Not all cities have archive centers.  I think (but I'm not 100% sure, so don't quote me)that most cities store their records at their county seat, in some format or another.  I'm simply lucky that the county seat for my area is the town next door.   :)  There are TONS of records (birth, death, marriage, etc.) in each county of the nation that have not yet been digitized and/or made accessible online.  I find that frustrating, and yet I realize it's a costly, time consuming process.  However, a person may always request documents from a state's Vital Records department.  A small fee is usually required and it usually requires waiting several weeks to receive the photocopy.

I hope that wasn't too confusing!  Sometimes I drone on about a subject and never really get to the point of what I wanted to say.   ;D  Just let me know if you have any other questions about family history researching and I'll try to help.

LOL! No, it wasn't confusing.  I thought about doing the vital records thing years ago but never got around to it.  I think that if I wanted to find out more about my family tree (my mothers side) I'd have to go that route because my grandparents were born in different states.

Thanks for the info. :)

The last hard cold snap we had a few weeks back killed off a LOT of plants and shrubs in our area, including the mums in front of our house.  I've given them some time to spring back and start greening up, but I just don't think they survived.  So I've decided to plant daisys in that spot instead.  I like daisys better than mums anyway.   :)

Daughter got a part-time job, just so she'll have some extra money coming in.  Now in addition to being a receptionist for an OB GYN practice, she's also a cashier in an "upscale" grocery store.  She'll work the second job Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays...which means she won't be able to come home for a while.   :(  But that's all right; I'd much rather see her earning some extra cash than trying to come home every other weekend.

My "stone-age" sister, 7 years my senior, has finally gotten herself connected to the internet--email and everything!   :)  So we've been emailing back and forth for a couple of weeks now.  It's great!

Today I received my 25-year pin from the University where I work.  Every April there's a little ceremony held on a Sunday afternoon for employees who have worked here 10, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years.  For various reasons, I do not attend.  Someone from HR always delivers the pins to me, and today was that day.   :)  It's actually an attractive pendant, 10K gold with 3-5pt diamonds, and can be worn either as a brooch or on a chain as a necklace.  So in my collection I now possess 3 blue sapphires, 3 rubies and the 3 diamonds.  --One of these days I figure I'll have a fancy-schmancy ring made from all these stones.  If I work here 40 years I'll have a bunch of diamonds...but I don't know if I can last that long!   ;D

Congrats on your pin, it sounds pretty nice!

My family is pretty stone aged as well.  I actually prefer doing the email/im thing than talking on the phone, but no one in my family has internet access :o which is very shocking to me because I couldn't live a day without mine.

(no hair news today)
This morning hubby's doctor/surgeon confirmed what we have known all along:  he does need surgery to repair a disc in his neck.  The right side of the C-5 disc is pressing against the nerve, and will not get better left alone.  So next Thursday the doc will replace the bad disc with a "spacer" and a small titanium plate & screws (much like the back surgery he went through in January), and baring complications hubby should be home the next day.  The doctor called this procedure a "piece of cake" compared to the other surgery.  Let's hope he's right!   :)  This surgery should cure those nasty headaches hubby has endured for years, and also get rid of the burning sensation he's been experiencing between his shoulder blades.

I really need to ask hubby to measure my length for May before he has the neck surgery and can't look down for at least 6 weeks.   ;D  Although that wouldn't be too much of a delay in measuring--June.  Still I'm curious as to what my current length is, because it looks really long in the mirror...

Thanks, La Diosa; I'm sure he'll be fine, too.  At this point, we're both looking forward to having this over and done with.
It's final exams week here at the university, so I'll be scoring tests for professors through Wednesday.  Then my trusty assistant will take over the test-grading Thursday and Friday when I'm out.  Ironically, the last surgery hubby had was also scheduled during finals week, and I was out on Thursday and Friday of *that* week, too...hmmm!

I'm getting ready to try homemade shampoo again.  I believe my last experiment failed, not due to the HM shampoo itself but, from lack of using any type of conditioner.  I cannot do without conditioner.  So I'm thinking I'll try aloe vera gel after shampooing and towel drying.  I don't know; I'm still mulling things about in my head.

Hubby did well with the surgery.  The procedure was done on Friday, late morning, and he was released Saturday morning.  There is some swelling, due to the breathing tube and the incision being on the front of his neck, which is causing him difficulty in swallowing.  But he's dealing as best as he can.  Hopefully by tomorrow, the swelling will be down enough for him to eat and drink normally again.

Much appreciated.

Sunscreen...*sigh*  I hate it.  It feels terrible.  It smells terrible (even the supposedly unscented ones).  It gets everywhere.  However it's summertime in Missouri, and I am terribly fairskinned.  So I have 3 choices.
1.  I slather on the much hated sunscreen every day.
2.  I cover up (long sleeves and a hat) in order to avoid the sunscreen.
3.  I never leave my house again.
As appealing as #3 is somedays, it ain't gonna happen.  Which leaves me to choose between choices 1 and 2.  I'm seriously leaning toward option #2.  It would be SO much easier, and maybe healthier, to simply wear protective clothing.  The biggest problem period is the time when I'm driving home in the afternoon, with the sun beating me to near death.  Today on the drive home I'll wear a hat to see if I find relief.  *Fingers crossed*

Stay indoors as much as possible, run the a/c in your house, car, whatever...use fans and drink lots of water. If you absolutely must go outside during daylight hours (ugh!), do protect your skin and hair with whatever means possible. Hats, parasols, umbrellas, clothing...heck, grab a towel or blanket and throw it over yourself while running from a building to your car. Just, ya know, make sure you can still see. lol  ;D

Wearing the hat during the drive home yesterday worked like a charm.  I also happened to have brought along a long sleeve shirt, and wore that on the drive home as well.  Felt much better than enduring searing flesh.  I remember some time last year Angel talking about "driving gloves" and I'm wondering if I can find a pair...at least I *think* it was Angel.  Arcadian, if I had the money I'd probably have been in England a LONG time ago!   ;D

Spirituality
I hesitate even to bring up this subject (faith, religion--call it whatever).  Those few of you who read my journal have seen me flip flop back and forth so many times.  I'm sure you're sick of seeing me talk about it.  Honestly, I'm getting a bit tired of trying to hash it out myself!   ;D  But hash it out I will.  I must get in touch with what I believe, not what I think I ought to believe.  It's wrong to hide in a dark, dank dungeon simply because you're used to the smell and the feel of it.  Perhaps a good place to start would be to determine what I believe...and yet, I find it easier to list what I do NOT believe, rather than what I do.  Maybe I should start there.  Maybe there is no label for who I am.  Nothing wrong with being label-less.   :)  Maybe the spiritual walker should not focus so much on reaching the end of the journey, but the journey itself.  Okay, I'm making my brain hurt--off to explore.  *hugs*

Hope you don't mind a quick thought on this ? For what it's worth I found I was never interested in spirituality at all, a very casual Church of England goer but that was about it. But I've always loved the outdoors to bits and a few years ago stumbled upon something called pantheism which meant nothing and still doesn't ! lol !  :D

But the very lightest Mother Nature sides of it all suits me just fine.... The times I've wrapped up, got a flask of hot coffee and just sat outside alone in the garden, sometimes with a powerful set of binoculars, looking at the Milky Way. Feeling the Universe. The odd meteorite.... It's breathtaking, humbling and puts everything into perspective every single time.  :)

And hope you manage England one day too especially the Celtic parts of Cornwall which I adore and visit whenever I can :)

Yep, that was me. As a lady who values youth and pallor in the flesh, I often wear gloves while driving in order to prevent sun damage. I have them in 3 separate lengths: wrist, elbow and opera, according to the length of my sleeves that day. And when I get where I'm going, I can simply take them off and not have to worry about the slimy, sticky feel of sunblock, which my skin is allergic to anyway.  :P
You can find them at any teenage accessory store, like Claire's or The Icing, and that's actually where mine came from. lol  :-[  ;D

As for spirituality, it's a very personal thing. But I remember an old quote that says you've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything. Hang in there.

Saturday I mixed up a batch of homemade shampoo, and used it yesterday.  NICE!  The recipe called for "herbal" water, so I brewed up what amounted to peppermint tea.  Hey, peppermint is an herb!   :)  For the soap ingredient, I used Dr. Bronner's peppermint liquid castille soap.  I lathered once, did a vinegar rinse, then lathered once again for good measure.  After towel drying, I applied a dollop of aloe vera gel to the ends as a leave-in.  Hair felt amazingly sleek after it dried.  The only drawback that may occur by using the homemade shampoo is the need to wash more often.  Since this gentle soap shampoo isn't as drying as the commercial detergent ones, my natural oils may not know what to do for a while.   :)  Oh, I'll also need to do the vinegar rinses more often, to restore the acidity level of my hair.  But I realize it takes about 3 weeks of use to discover true results, so I'll withhold absolute judgement until mid June.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed, though, because I like this solution very much!

Angel and Sakina, thanks ladies for the tips on gloves.  I think that'll be my next purchase in the sun prevention quest.   ;)  The hat and long sleeves are working super!  --Much better than that nasty ol' sunscreen.  Blech!

Oh great and thanks !  Nice you feel inclined a little that way too :)  Keeping it short (!) I think for me the beauty of it all was that there was little or nothing to study in the first place, rather how anything of Mother Nature seemed to affect me at any given moment.

I guess at the bottom of it all is how deeply every one of one’s senses is eventually capable of becoming 100% aware, feeling and resonating with Nature. Not necessarily running round embracing and chatting ecstatically to trees etc., so much as unwinding until you begin to feel a part of Her. It's hard to explain so I know this might sound a bit odd (!) but I love it when She always seems to physically or emotionally "come" to you rather than you trying to find or study something about Her, consequently I've always disliked anything that became too deep or esoteric. It's so laboured and makes you feel uncomfortable. In other words it was what I slowly discovered suited me, rather than perhaps what I felt I "had” or was “most compelled” by others to feel most suited to.

Perhaps that's how it all started with the Ancients as well (and the Celts !) when there was just the sun and moon and the stars and Nature ? And how anyone I believe can eventually sense in exactly the same way to "feel the universe", though that does take a bit more time - coupled with the odd bout of flu !  :)

As I suspected, I needed to wash my hair this morning due to greasy-looking locks.  I don't think I'll mind shampooing more often, though, since I know this formula is utterly healthy for me.  It's a good feeling to know what all the ingredients in one's shampoo are!  With the next batch I make, I may cut down on the amount of glycerin to discover if a lesser amount helps with the greasiness.  If not, oh well--I'll continue to shampoo more frequently.   :)

Other
Kiraela, I'm a peppermint freak, too!!   8-)  When I'm using the homemade shampoo in the shower, I'm in peppermint heaven.  But the smell doesn't last past the drying point.  Right now my hair simply smells like...well, hair.  That's all right, though...I'll just enjoy my pepperminty shampoo time.  Although, I just had a thought.  The recipe calls for any sort of essential oil one desires.  This step is optional and since I currently don't have peppermint essential oil, I left it out.  But now I'm wondering, had I added peppermint essential oil would the minty fresh smell last??  Hmmm....   ::)

Pantheism, yes!  It seems to suit most of what I feel and believe.  I like the idea of being able of making it my own, rather than having to (try to) stuff myself into someone or something else's idea of spirituality.

Second day hair, which doesn't look bad at all.  I was prepared to wear it up today, but after combing out the night braids my tresses looked fine being left down.  So that's I did.  Since beginning (re-beginning?) the homemade shampoo experiment, my hair looks really good--healthy and shiny.  It feels...how do I describe it?  Well, it feels coated.  I know that sounds like a negative, but it's actually a good feeling.  My tresses now have heft and a sort of thickness they didn't have before.  Anyway, so far the homemade shampoo gets a B+.  Why not an A, you ask?  Well, coming from a lifetime of using thick, soapy commercial stuff, the thinness of this mix takes some getting used to.

Still using the homemade shampoo, though not entirely happy with the results.  Even on wash days (as today was) the length appears a bit greasy.  Perhaps if less glycerin was used in the mix?  I guess I'll have to experiment with the experiment.   ;)  My daughter, who was home for a visit over the weekend, commented on how long my hair has grown.   :)  She, on the other hand, has gotten her hair cut short.   :o  It looks good on her, though, due to her natural curliness, she has to use a flat iron every time she washes.  Seems like a lot of work to me... :)

A.  Mix up a new batch of shampoo and decrease the amount of glycerin, which I suspect to be the culprit   :-?
or
B.  Switch back to commercial shampoo   :(
Hmm, I don't know.  I'll keep mulling.

Well, LaD, she was actually a long hair for quite some time.   :)  She kept her hair long through most of her school years, until just about a year or so ago.  Then she cut it to shoulder length, and now short-short.  So I'm sure she was overdue for a change!   ;)  My daughter is one of those lucky ducks who looks good in all lengths.

Work is very quiet right now but, then, summers for me usually are less chaotic.  I haven't even worked on my genealogy projects in two weeks.  I'm waiting on more copies of death certificates anyway, and so can't progress much further until I see those.
Spirituality...Pantheism, after some research, I'm discovering, is close but still not spot-on.  It certainly acknowledges the love of nature I feel, but doesn't address my need to define my God further than I have in the past.  If I HAD to give name to my set of beliefs, I suppose Unitarian Universalism would come closest (at least from what I read of them online).  I keep reminding myself of my earlier statement:

Maybe there is no label for who I am.  Nothing wrong with being label-less.     Maybe the spiritual walker should not focus so much on reaching the end of the journey, but the journey itself.

I do not enjoy attending church services.  I feel more in tune with God by simply walking out into my back yard, or the field beside our house.  I do not feel the need of formal religion, yet enjoy exercising faith.   :)  So the more I remind myself of this, the more I feel it is correct...there is nothing wrong with being unlabeled.  I believe in a Divine Presence and I choose to call that entity God.  My God probably does not fit precisely into the mold of the Christian God.  But, then, it's MY God, and it doesn't HAVE TO.   [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]
Be blessed!

Many people feel that way. I'm not a fan of organized religion either. There's no way that it can cater to individual beliefs, so in this day and age, many churches try a broader, more generalized approach, leaving the specifics up to the individual. But you still end up with one particular denomination's version of the truth.
What is the truth? I think only you can decide that in a way that satisfies you. There isn't going to be one organized denomination that preaches your ideas exactly. Believe what makes sense to you. Everything else will fall into place with time.

All pretty close to most of how I feel too  :)

Though the lightest sides of Pantheism, i.e. Nature alone, will always be spot on for me I do go a little way down the road of faith too. Perhaps we all need some form of security I don't know but when I do think about it, which isn't that often, I have to accept the fact that only God could have created Nature in the first place. So I do see God as being part of Nature as well....

I think I'm happy with that nowadays !  :)

I couldn't stand the grease anymore, so this morning I washed and conditioned with "store bought" shampoo.  Aah, immensely better.  Hair is once again squeaky clean and soft.  I wonder how it would work if I shampooed once a week with commercial shampoo and then used homemade the rest of the week?   :-?

I looked again at Annie B's book, found a variation on the original shampoo recipe, and decided to give it a try.  I mixed together 2 ounces of aloe vera gel, 1 ounce of liquid castille soap, and 1/8 cup of glycerin.  The concoction still looked pretty thin in my view, but I decided to use it anyway.  I like the initial results but, then, I also liked the initial results of the first formula.   :(  --Until the greasies attacked, that is.  I'm hoping the lower amount of glycerin will help.  *fingers crossed*  Only time will tell.

My length is now 29.5 inches   [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]  Right on schedule with my projected growth chart.  At this rate I think I should reach waist length around December or January.   :)

Thanks La Diosa.   ;)
Washed this morning with homemade shampoo formula #2.  Still liking this variation.  Plenty of suds to clean both the scalp and the length.  Smells good, feels good, no greasiness yet.  So far, so good.  *fingers crossed*  I also did a vinegar rinse this morning.

I've been realizing lately how much I miss having an old movie channel.  About a year ago, we decided to cut some of our expenses and lowered our dish programming package.  Unfortunately this meant I lost AMC and Turner Classic Movie channels.   :(  I dearly love watching old black and white movies.  I suppose I could start buying DVDs and build my own collection.  *shrug*

Also on my "list" (of things I would like to do) is to update my wardrobe.  Now, I'm not talking about throwing away all of my current clothing.  But there are items that no longer fit me well since I've lost weight (woo hoo!).  They're still in pretty good shape, so I can donate those to Good Will or whoever.  Then as I can afford to do so, I would like to update and upgrade my clothing.  I'd rather own a few very stylish pieces that will mix and match into several outfits, rather than having a lot of single pieces that don't really go together.  In the past I've been truly guilty of doing the latter.  Seeing a top, for instance, that I liked and buying it.  Well, first I should have stopped and thought--does this match anything in my closet?  But it all breaks down to money, so this will be an ongoing project.

Hmmm...really nothing new.  It's mind-numbingly boring at work these days.  I should get some books to read.  The other day I printed off the Time magazine list of 100 greatest novels and would like to start reading those.  I think my first read will be Gone With The Wind.  I've seen the movie but have never read the book.  --Of course, that list is only Time's opinion of greatest novels and may not jive with my idea of greatness.   8-)

Hope your shampoo works out. :)

I've never read Gone With The Wind either because I love the movie so much.  I read a bit of the book when I was in middle school, but it just seemed too different from the movie to me.  I did read Scarlet though and I really liked it a lot but I refuse to watch that movie.  It wouldn't be the same without Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable.

Didn't wash all weekend, so that was...5 days without washing--is that correct?  (rereads journal for clues)  Yep, I washed last Tuesday and again this morning (Monday).  5 days.  Wow.  And the hair didn't look bad at all; not terribly greasy.  Of course, I've been primarily using a comb on my tresses instead of a brush.  I think that makes a big difference in greasiness.

But over the weekend I started thinking (which is usually dangerous)...if Dr. Bronner's liquid castille soap is as gentle as they claim, then why shouldn't I use it straight up as a shampoo instead of mixing it with other ingredients??   :-?  Why not indeed.  I checked their website this morning and, sure enough, one of the uses is as a shampoo.  The site warns people with long, straight hair that uber-sudsing may occur.  But a vinegar rinse should compensate, they state.  Well, cool!!  I'll use it straight out of the bottle then!!   :D

Oh, I hate it when the operating system crashes! That happened one night at my old job and they weren't letting anyone leave, so my entire department just sat there, talked to each other, flipped through fashion catalogues, had chair races and dug out their cell phones to explain to their loved ones that they would be late. This went on for 2 freaking hours until the system finally came back on. What a bloody waste...  :P

Thanks for the comments, ladies.  I know I should not complain, and most of the time I find something to occupy my time (internet, as Angel said).  I know there are millions of people who would kill to have a job like mine.  I mean, where else could I come to work, sit around on my keister most of the day doing nothing, and still get paid?!  I guess I just feel like my time and my talents are being wasted.  But I'm scared of leaving this department because everyone is super good to me.  --They're all like second family.

I've returned to using commercial shampoo.  I had used the last of the homemade mixture, went to the bathroom closet to get the Dr. Bronner's for another batch, and saw 2 big bottles of Tre Semme shampoo sitting there, along with a big bottle of the conditioner.  And suddenly I was hit with a feeling of needing to tie up loose ends.  So I decided before I continue with the Dr. Bronner's, I will work my way through the Tre Semme my daughter left behind.  The TS works well for me and I should stop "product hopping".........at least for a little while.  :)

My night braids looked so cool with today's outfit that I simply rebraided and came to work!  One of my coworkers called me "Pipi'   ;D  but he did so in a loving manner, so I didn't mind.  Besides, hubby calls me Pipi all the time!   :)  The bad thing about wearing braids to work is that I can't seem to keep my hands off them!  --I just caught myself fiddling with them again.   ;D  Tomorrow I think I'll not wash and wear a high ponytail.  Then I'll maybe wash Wednesday (oops, tomorrow IS Wednesday) Thursday or Friday.  One thing I've noticed from the braids, though, is I have a lot of different lengths to my hair.  Not layers, lengths; as in the way one's hair grows at different speeds.  So I think I may ask hubby to give me a trim soon.

When I got home from work yesterday, our power was off. A line of severe thunder storms was moving through the area, and knocked out our grid. Nothing unusual but, being summer time, no electricity can become a real concern.

At least we have a gas stove, and were able to heat up leftovers in one of our trusty iron skillets.  Hubby headed off to a lodge meeting, leaving brother in law (BIL) and me to fend for ourselves.  BIL, who arrived home just as everything shut down, did a lot of reading on the front porch, while I read my bible in my ol' rocking chair. It got to be around 7:30pm and the power still wasn't restored. We had opened some windows, hoping for a good breeze, but it was pretty warm, I have to admit. --Could have been a lot worse, though, had the humidity been higher, or if the rain had not cooled us off a bit. Anyway, around 7:30pm I gave up, laid down on the bed, and ended up dozing off until around 9:00, when Hubby got back home. Guess I needed a little nap! We did the best we could, trying to rest without benefit of air conditioning or fans. Thankfully, the power was finally restored right around midnight!

You know, it seems as if we lose power at least once every summer and, I'll tell you what--it never ceases to make me thankful for modern conveniences. I grew up in an old farm house with no running water and no central air or heat. So when I hear folks talk about the "good old days" and wishing they could live the way our pioneer ancestors did, I do my best not to look at 'em like they're crazy. I think the "good old days" are sort of like the Gobi Desert--it'd be nice to visit, but I sure don't want to live there!

Had the mammogram this morning.   :)  You know, with this new digital technology the hospitals are using nowadays, the process really doesn't hurt the way it used to.  Oh, don't get me wrong, it's still a bit uncomfortable.  But nothing compares to the pain those old "vise grips" used to cause!   ;D  I think I passed the test, but my report card won't show up for about a week.

So...tomorrow is Independence Day (yay!), but we have no big plans...which is fine with both of us.  My inlaws will be over for a meal, and that's all.  My daughter is coming home on Thursday, and will probably leave on Saturday, I imagine.  She begins a new job on Monday, the 9th.  Stepson is trying to join the National Guard, but no one has heard from him.  So we don't know whether or not he passed the physical exam.  Hubby had his 6 week follow-up exam for his neck yesterday, and was given the okay to take off the neck brace.  He was so happy!   :D  The only time the neck brace must be worn is when Hubby is a passenger in a moving vehicle (but not when he's driving, which I don't understand).  He'll go back in another 6 weeks, in September.  Both fusions are healing fine and the doctor is happy with the progress.

Wash day; did a vinegar rinse this morning and still using the Tre Semme s+c.  Using the Tre Semme condish as a leave-in, and it's been working better for me than the previously used aloe gel.  I left my hair down to dry until I got to work, and had planned on leaving it down all day.  But my  tresses were making me hot so up into a bun they went.  I usually can't do anything with too-clean hair except leave it down.  But apparently I caught it this morning at just the right amount of dampness and making the bun was no problem.

July in Missouri...UGH.  I can't wait for Autumn.   :(
The university where I work has a nice little policy of buying back vacation hours from employees, and I always take advantage of that program.  We can only sell back a maximum of 40 vacation hours in one year's time.  So I've put in my request and on the 20th of this month, along with my normal pay, should receive a goodly "bonus" in my check.  I'm going to use the majority of the money for new clothes.

I need some new, er, undergarments  ;)  for the "upper story".   ;D

As to the boots, I love the look of the western style wedding boots.  But the boots I end up purchasing must fit within certain criteria...the heel must not be above 2 1/2 inches (preferably 2).  It must be cut in a wide width.  No platform soles.  The cost must not exceed $100 (with tax).  They cannot be suede.
Basically, I've been searching for a practical boot that is also fashionable.  I'm looking ahead to Winter where I will most likely wear the boots almost every day.  I think these (at the Boot Barn) will fit the bill.  *fingers crossed*   :)  Now I just have to choose between the colours of "Brandy" or "Antique Saddle".  I have a lot of browns in my wardrobe, as its one of my favourite colours.  I'm leaning toward "Brandy", though, as I'm afraid the "Saddle" would almost be too light.   :-?

Hair
Slept with my hair down last night.  I don't do that too often because, like this morning, I end up with some pretty good knots in the length.   :o  Shame on moi.  No-wash day; length in a high ponytail.

I love wearing skirts, even in cooler weather.  But I stopped wearing pantyhose a long time ago, because of their eevilness, and I recently stopped wearing thigh high hose because the elastic kills my skin.   >:(  Thank goodness for internet shopping!  I found a good garter belt and quality made stockings, suitable for everyday wear.  And the total price for my purchase was very reasonable.  I chose a 6-strap belt (the more belts, the smoother the stocking), and Italian-made stockings (only $9 a pair).  I placed my order last Friday morning and received the package in Monday's post.  How's that for fast!  --The only problem is my stockings are on back order, so I received only one pair.   :(  Patience, Trisha.  I have worn "real" stockings before, but the cheapo belt I had did them no justice.  So I'm excited about getting into that habit.

Oh my!  Garter belted stockings!  Boy does that bring back some really old memories!  Pantyhose did not exist when I started wearing stockings.  How I hated that garter belt!  Of course I also hate pantyhose.  I only wear hand knit socks or nothing at all!  I'm working on some kneehighs to wear with skirts this winter.  But good for you for deciding what will work for you and going for it!

In yesterday's post, I received a sample of Pantene "Brunette Expressions Daily Color Enhancing" shampoo and conditioner, and used them this morning.  Wow...I like!!    [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Both products seem rich and thick and smooth and creamy.  Now I want to purchase bottles of both, to try them for an extended length of time.  Even though I don't colour my hair, the extra moisturizing compounds couldn't hurt.  Tre Semme, you may have a rival!   8-)

I have one word for my garter belt and stockings:  COMFY
I'm so happy to have found what seems to be a perfect match for my needs and sense of style.  Yay!

I have another word for the stockings and garter belt look: SEXY! Woohoo!  ;D
I used to wear them in high school and actually found them to be quite uncomfortable and switched to the conventional pantyhose...well, and fishnets (goth, remember).  ;)  Isn't it funny how one person's nightmare can be a haven for someone else?

Please let us know how you like the Brunette Expressions S&C. I've been thinking of trying them for quite sometime now (my grandmother, rest her soul, even used them before she passed...and my mother uses the formula for redheads).

Made a trip to Wally World before work this morning to buy the Pantene products.  I imagine Angel is shedding a tear of joy at the thought of my possible Pantene conversion!   ;D
Anyway, I chose Pantene Pro-V Brunette Expressions, Daily Color Enhancing, Intense Hydration, Nutmeg to Dark Chocolate s+c.  Sheesh, what a mouthful to type!   :o  I can't wait to begin using them tomorrow and find out how they work for my hair.  Keep your fingers crossed.

Nah, I just hope it works great for you and makes you (and your hair) happy. Or that you find something else that does.

It sounds like you have the kind of hair colour that I covet. hehe I'm in the Toffee to Almond range.  ::)

What do you think was my first thought upon awakening this morning?  Was it, "Yippee, it's Friday"?  Or "Oh, what a beautiful morning"?  No.  How about, "I get to start using my new Pantene products today, WOO HOO!!!"   ;D  What a hair freak am I.

The Pantene products, Brunette Expressions, feel and look wonderful.  Thick, rich and creamy...sounds like a good dessert, doesn't it?!   ;D

I shampooed first (tons of lather), and then did a vinegar rinse.  Every time I change s+c I do a vinegar rinse, regardless of whether I've already done it that week or not.  Clean slate and all that.  Of course I ended with conditioner.  I especially like the conditioner; it's thick enough to stay put in the palm of one's hand.  I detest thin, runny conditioner.  The products have a nice, light, clean smell--very enjoyable.  My hair feels soft, had very few tangles upon combing out, and doesn't look frizzy or flyaway, which had been a small problem this week and last.  I plan on using Pantene for at least a month or until I run out, whichever comes first.  Then I'll reevaluate.

I've used the Pantene Brunette Expressions s+c twice now, and both times have been happy with the results.  Hair is soft, shiny, less prone to tangles...yep, so far, so good.  I'll see how I feel at the end of a month, though, before passing absolute judgement.

I've been making a point of writing every day--journal entries do not count.  I want to develop creative writing as a habit, even if it's only for 15 minutes at a time.  Right now I'm working on what's called a "cozy" mystery.  Before last week I didn't even know that's what those types of mysteries were called!   ;D  I always enjoyed reading what I call the "kinder, gentler" sorts of mysteries--just didn't know they had their own genre!

Hair
Pantene's Brunette Expressions again this morning.  For a while, I've decided to shampoo and condition every other day, instead of attempting to go 3-4 days without cleansing.  No particular reason except that I enjoy the look of my hair clean as opposed to slightly greasy.

So this morning makes, what?  Three washes with the Pantene products.  I'm still lovin' it, though I'll know better at the end of August whether or not I'm totally converted.

The writing goes well.  Disciplining myself to write every day seems to be working for me.
With the garter belt, I ordered 5 pairs of stockings.  I received only one pair, the rest being back ordered.   >:(  If the other 4 pairs do not arrive in today's post, I intend to call the company to see if they can tell me an approximate shipping date.  I can make do with having only one pair of stockings, but really shouldn't have to.

LOVING the Pantene Brunette Expressions   8-)  Last week I thought it was only my imagination when I began to notice subtle changes in the color of my tresses, as in I could see clear defintion between the brown tones and the reddish tones.  But then a coworker from another department remarked upon the "pretty, natural highlights" in my hair.   ::)  It's GOT to be the Pantene, because nothing else has changed!

I adore how the Pantene makes my hair feel...smooth, silky, soft.  It makes my hair look glossy and shiny and super "brunettey".   ;D  I believe I've found myself a new favorite shampoo/conditioner!

Other
I called the stocking store this morning to find out if they had any news of my back-ordered stockings.  A nice lady told me their latest shipment should be arriving at the store by the end of this week and I will hopefully receive my stockings next week.  *patient sigh*   :(

We are currently in the throes of a typical Missouri August, i.e., hell.  The humidity is oppresive, even to those with a healthy respiratory system.  I tend to think of August as the last hurrah of Summer, and the only thing that gets me through this period is holding onto the knowledge that Autumn is not far away.

Tuesday I took a much needed day off from work and went on a little road trip with my husband and his parents.  We left the house around 8 that morning and got back close to 3:30 that afternoon.  We shopped, we ate lunch, and it was friggin' fantastic simply being out and about.   :)
Today and tomorrow I'm filling in out front for our receptionist, who has also decided to play hooky from work.  She works hard; she deserves some time off, too.
As mentioned before, Missourians are lucky to experience all four seasons and, even as much as I hate summer, I relish all of them.  I can't imagine having the same sort of weather 12 months a year...although I can see how wardrobe planning would be a whole lot easier!   ;)

I'm wearing my hair today in this octopus-type clip:

I'm glad I ordered the large one because already my hair is barely fitting in the bowl of the clip!!   :o
Still very happy with the Pantene products...I don't even need leave-ins any more.  Just shampoo, condition, and go.  I'm still doing a vinegar rinse once a week, but that's all.

We're still enduring our annual heat wave; 102 today, which will likely be this week's average temperature.  At least the humidity is low--that's our only saving grace right now.
Classes at the elementary school near my home start this Thursday.  The fall term here at the university where I work begins next Monday, the 20th.  I can't believe it's already that time.
Finally, finally received the remaining 4 pairs of back-ordered stockings last week.  Yay!
Still working on my writing, although I did not write anything yesterday--but that's the first day I've missed in, what?  2 weeks.  For me, that's excellent.  Let's see...anything else?  I can't think of anything.  Family and friends are doing relatively well in the health and happiness departments.   :)

During a recent conversation following a post I made about a hair dream, my eyes have been opened to the fact that I am under stress.  I know that sounds odd; as if I hadn't known I was under stress.  Well, I really didn't!   :)  I googled the word stress and after reading several articles feel I should clarify my current situation.

Yes, I have several stressors happening in my life.  Some of these stressors have been ongoing for a few years.  Some will get resolved and disappear.  Some will not.  But, honestly, I do not feel stressed even with these stressors hanging over me.  It's not that I'm hiding my head in the sand, hoping they'll go away on their own.  It's simply a matter of knowing that, one way or another, these situations will get resolved.  --They always do.  You see, I've learned over the years not to worry about things over which I have no control.  Stressing and fretting over that which we have no control only eats up precious time and energy.  I prefer to focus on the positive aspect of life (whenever possible).   8-)

Hair
No-wash day; length is braided.  Layers   :P  Two and a half years ago, when I first joined LL, my hair was super short.  Of course, to achieve the sassy look of the cut, my stylist had to incorporate some layers.  I've always had a sort of unspoken agreement with my layers; I would ignore them if they behaved themselves, until I reached waist length.  Well, my longest strands have pretty much reached waist length.  And I've been thinking of cutting my hair to a length where all of the layers would be gone.  Now, this would involve a loss of...oh, at least 2, maybe 3 inches.   :o  A major cut, I know.  But at least my tresses would be one length.  Cutting that much hair, though...*cringe*  --Would put me back up above BSL again.  I know...It's just hair, and it does grow back.  I do want the layers gone from my hair, so really it's only a question of doing it now or waiting until after December.   [smiley=undecided.gif]  Opinions are most welcome.   8-)

My "baby" is coming home today!  *boogies around the room*  Feel free to dance amongst yourselves   ;D  She's considering taking an 8-month course to become a pharmacy tech.  oooOOOooo!  That would be a good profession, eh?   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]  Nothing definite yet, so I won't hold my breath.  I'm very proud of her, though, for all she's accomplishing this year.

Hair
I trimmed my own tresses this weekend.   :o
I wet my hair during my shower (but did not wash it), left on the towel, got dressed and went outside (didn't want a mess in the bathroom).  I bent over, combed my hair out (upside down) and proceeded to snip off about an inch to an inch and a half, just straight across.  Of course, straight across when one is upside down translates into layers once one returns to right side up!   ::)  Obviously, I didn't think about that consequence.  But, you know, I already had layers in my hair from the original short cut in 2004.  My length is still in a soft "V" shape, and the layers seem intentional--and they look fine, if I do say so myself.
My shortest layer, my front (bangs, if you will), is 13 inches long; the longest point (the bottom of the V), is 31 inches long.  For a while I considered having my daughter cut the entire length even with the 13 inch mark.  In the back of my mind I'm still considering that move.  It's doubtful, however, to happen because...well, I really love my long hair.  It's taken me 2 1/2 years to achieve waist length.  I'm not sure I'm ready to start all over again.  --At least not for a while.   8-)

Hair
I've been using Pantene now for...how long?  (searches back thru journal)  Let's see...27th of July means almost 4 weeks.  One negative attribute I've been able to detect is that my hair seems to get oilier quicker.  While using TreSemme I was able to go three, sometimes four, days without washing.  Granted, I had to wear it up (either in a bun or a ponytail), but it still looked decent.  The bottom line is that Pantene Brunette Expressions seems to be an all right product; but I don't believe it to be anything special.  The TreSemme has a livlier, slightly stronger, better smell.  So in the end, the Pantene is fine, however I may just end up returning to TreSemme.  I haven't compared them pricewise, and that's usually a big tie breaker for me.   :)

Other
I'm in a really good mood today, and for no good reason.  I love days like today...I like the skin I'm in, I feel like I look good, I feel emotionally strong, and not even the hot temperatures of August can get me down.   :D

The left front strap on my garter belt will NOT stay fastened.  I've tried lengthening the strap, shortening the strap, different positions on the stocking--no luck.  The right strap often comes unfastened, too, but not as much as the left one.  Thank god there are two more straps on either side to hold up the stocking, or I'd be in trouble.  It's annoying enough as it is, because I know that darn strap has come loose and it makes my OCD kick in.   >:(  I guess I'll have to try squeezing together the hook juuuust a smidge.  Now I know why some women give up on wearing skirts and dresses.

Title: Re: Trisha's Tresses 2007

Not to be funny or sarcastic, but there are thigh highs with elastic grip at the top that will not cut off your circulation!

Title: Re: Trisha's Tresses 2007
Post by Trisha on Aug 24th, 2007 at 9:19am
Well, it's not so much that the thigh highs cut off circulation.  The elastic wreaks havoc on my skin.  The day after wearing thigh highs, I suffer red welps.   :(  A little corn starch patted on the site pre stocking helps.  But then it's a game of too much or too little.  Too little and the welps appear; too much and the stockings won't stay up!   :o  So the next step in the Great Garter Belt Adventure is to use pliers to GENTLY squeeze that holder together just a smidge.  If that doesn't work, then my next alternative is crotchless pantyhose.  I don't know why I didn't think of those before now.  I mean, the reason for avoiding regular pantyhose is their single-piece design holds in heat and moisture which is bad for the nether regions (ahem).  But if there's no crotch in the pantyhose, then problem solved, eh?  Jeepers, I never thought I'd be talking about crotchless pantyhose online!!!  LOL   ;D

Cutting my hair to one (shorter) length is still heavy on my mind.  The shorter layers are annoying, as it's like having to start over again.  They're too short now to fit into clips and buns.   >:(  And worst of all, it's my own bleeping fault.  To repeat myself, the layers don't look bad; when my length is down, they're unnoticeable.  But I know they exist and it's starting to drive me bonkers.  I must either be patient and wait for the shorties to regain their length, which will take at least another year.  Or I can cut the major part of my length to better match the shorties.  *faint*   :P  Crap.

Tomorrow brings a full moon; I include this from the Farmers Almanac:
• Full Sturgeon Moon - August The fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

Next Monday brings us to Labor Day weekend.  I think I'll take Tuesday off as vacation, which will give me a 4-day weekend...yeah, that sounds good.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Not much going on right now.  I'm waiting on consistently cool weather so I can feel human again.   ;D  I'm going to order some bulbs for Fall planting, or at least I'd like to.  *shrug*  Once again it comes down to money.

My first day back to work after my 4-day weekend so I washed, even though I washed yesterday too.  The problem with freshly laundered hair is it's too clean to do anything with, so today it's hanging down.

As Angel mentioned in her journal I, too, have been thinking of cutting off all of my hair.   :o  Part of this urge is coming from my new student worker, who has a cute short cut.  Or maybe the entire urge is coming from that area; I don't know.  But, you know, the changing seasons also seem to have an influence over me.  It's almost as if I want to change my physical appearance when the earth changes hers.  Does that make sense?   :P  Well, I guess I'll wait a couple of weeks and see how I feel then.

Hi Trisha, hope you enjoyed your long weekend! :D

I get what you're saying.  I always look at the changing of the seasons as a way of starting over or a new beginning.  I guess changing your look with the season would be a way of starting fresh.  I've been thinking the same thing but in reverse.  I've been looking forward to the fall with excitement knowing that my hair will lengthen as the days and months go on.

I know that cute short cuts can be tempting but that's too easy, anyone can have a short cut in an instant.  I think that long hair, with the time and patience it takes to grow it out and care for it makes it more rewarding. ;)

Very true, LD, about the instant temptation of cute, short cuts.  This is why I abide by the 2-week rule.  In fact, after only 24 hours, I'm already waffling about wanting short hair again.   :D  If I do decide to cut, I believe I would only go as short as shoulder length, which would give me plenty of hair to play with.  Thanks for replying--it's good to have you back!   8-)

The annual family reunion for my mother's family happens during the first weekend in October; already I'm halfway dreading it.  The only good parts will be (a) getting to visit with my sister who will flying in, and (b) visiting with my Aunt Marvil who lives in Florida.  *sigh*  I intensely dislike family reunions.  I stopped attending them when I was about 18, avoiding them religiously for several years.  Then in 2003, after the cancer ordeal, I guess I was feeling sentimental or something, so I went.  Big mistake, because now my presence is expected every year, and I get grilled by the local aunts if I don't show.  *sigh*  So I guess I'd better start now trying to psyche myself up for this stinkin' reunion.  I will have a good time, I will have a good time, I will have a good time (how long before it starts working??)........   :P

It starts working after about the second glass of wine! ;D  I intensely dislike them, too!  That's why usually in my family you get to see everyone either at weddings or funerals......nuff said.

I've never been to a family reunion... I guess I'm lucky?

And curlgirl? Your family is quite close knit compared to mine! Half the time we don't show up for weddings or funerals either, because quite frankly, most of my mom's side either hates each other, or hasn't met.

Family reunions, yeah...  :(  It's like, once I get there, I'm all right--I enjoy talking to my aunts and uncles who live far away.  They're all elderly now, of course (the youngest is 60), so I know these reunions are my only avenue to visit with them.  I could care less about my cousins, honestly--I know that sounds awful, but it's true.  Oh, there are some I like and enjoy talking with, namely the "local bunch" (as I think of them).  The rest?  I have nothing in common with them and have no desire to keep in touch.  *shrug*  I'm quite content to live my life and am happy to let them do the same.
But since my sister is making a special trip to attend this year's gathering, I know the aunts and uncles would love to see both of us there together (it's usually only one of us in attendance).  *sigh*  So I'll go...but maybe I'll take a flask with me!   :o

Hair
Washed this morning after going...how many days?  Er...3 days w/out.  My tresses were decidedly greasy; well, the crown was anyway.  That's one negative on the Pantene--I can't seem to go as long w/out washing as with TreSemme.  I mean I CAN, physically, hold off on washing.  But I would look like a grease pit.  If I was a stay-at-home-wife (wistful sigh) I probably wouldn't wash my hair more than once a week.  As it is, though, I have a certain reputation to uphold and I do care what others think of my tresses.

Ahhh, Autumn...finally you've arrived!!   :D  Oh, I know you're official entrance isn't scheduled until the 23rd of this month.  But this morning's wonderfully chilly temperature tells me otherwise.  I actually had to dig out a jacket to wear this morning!  *giddy laugh*

I'm not much of a family reunion person myself.  I just feel that if families were actually  interested  in each other, they would meet more or at least talk on the phone, sort of eliminating the need for an "official" reunion.  I'm bascially more about my immediate family that I know and love and have great times with than meeting with strangers who have noting in common other than being a part of the same family.

Although Trishia, you mybe interested to know that I've gone against type and did a little poking aroung on ancestors.com.  I found some information on my paternal grandfather, even finding out the name and birth location of his mother. :)  I found that a bit cool, like putting together a puzzle or doing detective work.:D

Autumn...I'm quite aware that it is slowly creeping up on us as well.  I thought I was looking forward to it but as a person who completely dislikes the cold, I supposed the most I can do is put on a happy face and simply accept the inevitable colder days to come. Also focusing on (as I'd mentioned before)the fact that by the time the colder wether is over my hair will be longer,  helps my transition into fall.

I am glad you're genuinely enjoying it though! :D

Good for you, sweetie!   :)  See, wasn't that fun?  I get so much of a rush when I solve a "history mystery" I've been stumped on for a while.  Love it!

To be honest I've pretty much decided against attending the family reunion in October, unless something miraculous happens between now and then.  It kind of hearkens back to what La Diosa said...if I cared about them--if THEY cared about ME, wouldn't we be in contact more than once a year??  I hate pretending.  And I hate doing things out of a sense of obligation.  I'm 45 years old, for crying out loud, and if I do NOT want to attend the stinkin' family reunion then I WON'T.   >:(  harumpf!  Besides, it's not as if I sit around on my arse every weekend doing nothing.  I have a life, gosh darnit, and a major part of that involves taking care of my family!  double harumpf!

Juuuuust a thought, but your relatives, no matter how distant, are still your family. They won't be around forever. As a woman who traces her family history, would it not interest you to hear the stories of family members who are still alive to tell you about them? I'm sure that if you had the opportunity to talk to any of the distant relations you've been reading up on, you would seize it in a heartbeat.

Families don't always have time to get together. Heck, I live with 3 immediate family members and usually, not a one of us is home at the same time. Does that make them any less family? Of course not. I also have relatives - immediate, distant and surrogate - scattered all across the country, many of whom I've not seen in several years. Does that break our bond as family? No.

Of course, I also have a few relatives whom I cannot stand and would rather have nothing to do with whatsoever. Everybody has those, I think. And if that's how you feel about each and every person that will be attending the reunion, then yes, you should probably avoid it, and no one could blame you.
I think what it really comes down to is whether or not you really care...not them. If you decide to go and totally hate it, there aren't any laws that require you to stay there, nor are there any chains holding you down.

Please don't be angry with me - I'm certainly not trying to pursuade an opinion or anything because it's none of my business. Just thought I should mention, as a person who has lost a great deal of family members, that these people won't always be there. You don't want to find yourself looking back with regret. Do what you feel is right.  ;)

Oh, I'm not mad at you sweetie.  Our friendship is too strong.   :)  And I agree with most of what you said.  But the genealogy I'm working on isn't my mother's side; that family history was done years ago by an uncle of mine.  I'm working on filling in the gaps of my father's ancestors and, unfortunately, those folks are long gone.  Honestly, I always feel out of place among my mother's siblings + their families.  They don't say or do anything specific, it's a vibe I pick up on.  Or maybe I'm simply super insecure, I don't know.  I didn't have time this morning, but I need to find my handwritten journal from last year and see what my thoughts were about the 2006 reunion.  I just always remember thinking, "Thank God that's over!"  The bottom line is I have about 3 weeks to decide and, even then, there could be a last minute change.  Thanks for your thoughts, though, really--I honestly appreciate it.

Hair
Washed today with my old stand-by TreSemme.  I'm not sure why...I simply had an urge to pass on the Pantene this morning.  *shrug*  Since it's wash day, the tresses are down; I can't do much with my hair when it's super clean.

Other
Yesterday when I got home from work I dug out my journal from last year, to reread my thoughts about last year's family reunion.  Do you know what I found?  --Nothing!   ::)  Oh, I found the journal, and I found several entries around that time of the year (the reunion is always held during the first weekend in October).  But I made absolutely positively no mention of it.  Hmmm!  ...So later I asked my hubby.  "Do you remember -- Did we go to last year's reunion?"  :-?  "No," he says, "You said you didn't want to go."  Hmmm!!  In fact, he went on to remind me, you haven't been to a family reunion in 2 or 3 years.   :o  Hmmm!!!  --And here I thought I had only skipped 1 year!

Quote:

Amen to that, La Diosa.

There are a lot of little factors in this decision, not the least of which is distance.  It takes a good hour of driving time to get from our house to the reunion site.  That's an hours worth of gasoline gone from our budget.  My sister is coming home for the reunion and to be honest, I'm not looking forward to seeing her.  I'm quite ticked at her right now for reasons I don't want to go into just yet.  And those are just a few issues....*sigh*  Oh, I don't know.  This year I'll probably play the part of the good little niece and have hubby drive me down there--that way we can leave when we want.  My daughter is also coming home that weekend so we can celebrate her birthday early.  I suppose we could arrive around 9:30 or 10, do the visiting thing, and then leave by noon.  Hubby and I are still living our low carb lifestyle, so we can't really stay for lunch anyway.

All right, ladies, mucho thanks for all the thoughts you've given me.  *group hug*  :-*

Hair
Washed yesterday and did a vinegar rinse, so today is 2nd-day hair up in a bun.  I'm trying to decide how I want to do my hair for the family reunion on Saturday.  On the one hand I'd like for it to be freshly washed and leave it down for everyone to notice.  On the other hand my hair looks really good in a bun.  *shrug*  I'll simply have to wait and find out what mood strikes me on Saturday morning.

Other
Yeah, so, the family reunion is this Saturday.  As far as I know, my sister and her husband will be arriving sometime on Thursday.  I don't know for certain, you see, because the last time I talked to her was when I telephoned last Sunday (the 16th).  Her tone then was very curt and short, and the conversation was very brief.  I don't know what's going on with her, but she doesn't need to take it out on me.   >:(  Enough about her.  My daughter will also be home this weekend  :)  and we'll be celebrating her birthday early while she's here.  I need to do some serious cleaning before Thursday, so every day after work I plan on completing a task or two.  But if the house isn't dust free from top to bottom, who cares?  The important thing is that we all get to spend some time together.   8-)

Oh Trish, you sound like such a cool mom!
My mother would probably never put forth that much effort if I were coming to visit. And if she did, she would likely freak out trying to get it all done in one day, turning everyone else in the house into her slaves. lol

Angel: Awwww, thanks so much!  My daughter is one of the best things in my life.   :)  I feel blessed to have her.

LaDiosa:  Actually, there's a lot of allowable foods on a low carb diet.  You've given up meat?  Okay...well, let's start with something easy:  green salads.  Salads are the staple of our meals.  Start with just plain ol' lettuce, add whatever kinds of veggies you like that are low in carbs (peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes, cukes...), add some cheese (most hard cheeses are low carb), a low carb dressing (which usually translates to low- or no-sugar), and there's your meal.  Hubby and I pattern our eating habits after the Atkins plan, and I'm including a link to the Atkins site's carb counter page.
http://www.atkins.com/carb-counter
We go by the "net" carb figures which is the total amount of carbs minus any fiber.  It's a good site to look around, although it's not geared toward vegetarian leanings.  Also a good mutli vitamin is important if you're not already on a regimen.
Just let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to help if I can.

Hair:  Wash day with Pantene Brunette Expressions.  Nothing else new.  *shrug*  *sigh*

Other:  My sister and brother in law should be arriving sometime tomorrow (I guess; who knows?).  Last night I dusted.  Tonight after work I need to mow the grass and vacuum.  Saturday, of course, is the family reunion.  I will survive...it's only for a couple of hours...*cleansing breath in*   :-?  *exhale bad stuff*   :)

I'll throw in a comment about salads.  Iceberg lettuce has almost NO nutritional value - it is primarily water with a little fiber.  If you are eating a lot of salads make sure that you are getting a variety of greens.

Hair:  No-wash today.  I washed on Saturday morning for the family reunion and left the hair down.  Mine was definitely among the longest of hair at the reunion, possibly even THE longest (of any age group).   8-)  I saw plenty of "bad" hair in that crowd (including my own sister's)--bad dye jobs, damaged ends, too much product, blow-fried, bobbed, neglected...argh.   :o  I do not believe long hair is suitable for everyone.  But, for heaven's sake, take good care of the hair you have, no matter the length.

Other:  As to the family reunion on Saturday, I admit freely and honestly that I had a good time.  *I* had a good time at a family reunion...  ::)  It blew my mind!  I actually wouldn't have minded staying longer than the 2 1/2 hours we were there, but we had thngs to accomplish.  I don't know exactly what was different this time that resulted in me having a good time...the planets aligned...I felt good and I knew I looked good.  Maybe it's simply a result of growing older and wiser, and finally finally feeling confident in my own skin.   8-)

Thanks for the info on the carbs.  I still haven't checked out the Atkins site but I will soon.  I eat lots of vegetables and salads (Yes Bikerbraid, leafy green ones, preferably spinach ;))  The only thing is I like to eat lots of pastas in creamy sauces and potatoes and things like that, to feel that I'm eating something substantial.  Do you ever feel that way?  I like tofu as a meat substitution but I really need to find some recipes.

The first couple of weeks of low carb are the worst.  This is when your body is basically detoxing from the sugars and starches.  Your transition is compounded with being a vegetarian.  It's just going to take some time for everything to fall into place because your body is used to the heavy carby starchy things (pasta, potatoes, sugar).  Tofu sounds like a good alternative for your lifestyle.  Here are some websites I found by doing a search for "low carb vegetarian".  Hope they help.   :)

I for one, would like to say that I'd love to read some of the things you've written. If you ever want a  (completely untrained) editor, proofreader, or simply... an avid audience... let me know!  *hopes*

I would like to mention the story of Alexandra Erin, an author I am a major fan of... All of her (so far released) writing is done online...  as of Jan. 1, she plans to quit her job and live full time as an author, just off donations from fans of her stories. She did a donation drive to collect 3000$ (enough to live for at least a few months, I gather) and reached the goal within a month... And people still keep giving. And the only publishing she's had, is self-releasing the first two 'books' of a webstory.

Just a bit of encouragement... You can be a famous author without ever being published! (I'd still love to read your work, btw)

I'm still writing, working on a couple of stories at the same time, and doing a little family history research at the same time.  Whew, my poor brain is in a tizzy but I'm really having fun!   :o    8-)

OK, you and Bikerbraid are officially making me sick. lol While you enjoy your rain and your clean, cool air and your healthy crops, remember to say a prayer for your westerly neighbours who are currently engulfed in flames.  ::)  :P

don't worry Angel Spun - I am saying my prayers for everyone that might be affected by the fires in CA and the draught in the SE USA.  I wish I could have sent some of our rain to the areas that could have benefited.

Believe me, honey, BB and I both would gladly send your area rain if it was in our power to do so!  *hugs*

Friday 26 October 2007
Hair:Washed this morning, although I probably could have gone one more day in a segmented ponytail.  I just felt like having clean hair today.  *shrug*

Other:I haven't written in two days.  Sometimes I just have to not write and let my brain rest.  You know?  I'm sure a lot of people think writing fiction is easy but, let me tell you, it's darned hard work.  So yesterday, instead of writing, I worked on the family history research.  I wanted to visit the church cemetery near my house last evening.  But other things needed doing.  Besides, I'll have more time to visit the dead this weekend, when the weather promises to be nice.

*hugs to Trish and BB* Someone must have taken your sympathies to heart because SoCal should soon be receiving rain. Not enough (it never is - that's why we have all of these durn fires!), but we'll take anything.

Hair:I washed last Friday, didn't wash on Saturday, Sunday or Monday, then washed this morning.  The segmented ponytail is still the current favorite.

Other:  I haven't written in a few days, so it's about time to get back to work.  I followed some family history leads during my break from writing, but didn't get very far.  On Saturday afternoon I walked through two cemeteries.  One I pass by every day on my way to work, just outside the city limits, and the other is the Lutheran church cemetery close to my house where a lot of my family is buried.
I know a lot of people are uncomfortable in cemeteries, even in broad daylight.  Call me a freak (here's your chance!), but I find cemeteries somehow peaceful and comforting.  *shrug*   ::)
I started today gathering low carb recipes for Thanksgiving.  I found some good possibilities here  http://www.fabulousfoods.com/fitfab/articles/lcholiday2.html
and I'm very excited to try the low carb sage dressing.  *fingers crossed*  Perhaps a trial batch is called for, no?   ;)
Blessings to all of you.

Yeah, you knew I was gonna comment on this one.  ;)  I am totally not going to call you a freak (boy, would that be hypocritical!). Cemeteries are one of the safest places in the world to be (at least during the day) because everyone's dead.  ;)
But seriously, I know what you mean about feeling peaceful there. Especially in a lot where your family is buried. It's kind of comforting and interesting at the same time to walk through a place where history comes to rest. Not to mention acknowledging the people who have lived in your area before you. I'm sure that they appreciate being remembered.

In my bedroom, there are several pictures of people and pets who have passed on and I don't find it the least bit creepy. Looking at them every day reminds me to be grateful that they were part of my life...and still are.  :)

I am another cemetery person!  I love just going there and relaxing.  I also took photo's there as well and tombstone rubbings.  The cemeteries in my area have stones as far back as the 1800"s. One has a really neat crypt too! :)  If I ever find the pictures I took I put them up.

Hair:Washed and conditioned this morning with Pantene Brunette Expressions.  I had gone back to TreSemme for a couple of wash cyles.  But my hair was beginning to look a little...washed out, I guess I would say.  I must admit, the Brunette Expressions makes my natural hair color pop, and seems to bring up the highlights.  Why fight it, eh?  I asked hubby to measure my hair this morning, and my longest point is 32 1/2".  Wow.   :)
Other:I'm counting down the weeks until December 14, which will be my last working day of 2007.  The university will be closed beginning December 24, a Monday, and I asked off for the preceeding week.  Including weekend and holidays, I will be off for a total of 18 days.   :o
Hope everybody has a safe and pleasant weekend!   :-*

Hair:Yes, I must admit that Pantene has done right by me.   ::)

Another admission I must make is that I've been thinking again about whacking off my hair.   >:(  Why am I having these distubing urges?  I'm happy with my long hair, really I am.  At least I think I am.  Am I not?  *searches hair soul*  Hmm....maybe I'm projecting the boredom I feel about my life in general  onto my hair.   :-?  Change the hair, change the life, right? Hmm...psychology 101 sure comes in handy some days.   ;)

Other:Eh...  :P  Haven't been writing, haven't been working on the genealogy.  I'm simply slogging through the days, going through the motions of life.

Title: Re: Trisha's Tresses 2007

*sneaks up and hides the scissors again*  ;)

Psychology is bunk. Life will be what you make of it, no matter what your hair looks like. You've worked hard to grow your hair to its current length. If you absolutely must cut, don't take off more than a few inches. That way, it won't take long to recover.

Those periods of "blah" are kinda sucky. Like you're kind of passing through a hazy blur of work, home and the usual crapola. My typical solution is to go out and spend money (on things that I sincerely want, of course), but sometimes that doesn't help much.  ::) I'm not going to leave you with the "hang in there" cliché. Everyone has their own methods of breaking through the "blah" but usually it just works itself out. Peace.  :)

Tuesday 6 November 2007
Hair:Wash day, yay!  Hair is parted down the middle.  My hair looks so good when it's clean that seeing it makes me happy.   :)  The urge to chop off all of my length has once again subsided.  Maybe I simply need to wash it more often?  --Something to consider.

Other:Hubby and I had our annual dental check up this morning, and both passed with flying toothbrushes.  Flying toothbrushes instead of flying colors, get it?   ;D  Ahem.   :-?  Then next Tuesday, the 13th, I'll have my annual check up with my gynecological doctor.
We're gearing up for Thanksgiving, on the 22nd of this month, making up a menu and grocery list.  My daughter will be coming home for 4-5 days.   :)  It's challenging, yet not impossible, to fix dishes for both the regular eaters and us low carb folks.  Hubby, brother in law, and I are the low carbers.  The other 5 people at the Thanksgiving table are regular eaters.  I've been finding some good recipes here:
http://www.fabulousfoods.com/fitfab/articles/lcholiday2.html
and here:
http://www.lowcarbfriends.com/recipereview/index.php

I prefer recipes that are simple yet tasty, involving ingredients that I am likely to keep on hand all of the time.  It's usually cheaper that way, too.   ::)
The weather here in Missouri is cold and clear, with temperatures set to drop into the 20s tonight.   :o  You'd best believe Yours Truly will be stoking up the fire this evening!
Peace and love, everybody   :-*

Hair:  I think I'm going to try washing every other day instead of going so long in between shampoos.  So since I washed yesterday today is a no-wash day.  The top still looks good, though, with very little grease, so I'm wearing my hair down today.  The back/length is slightly wavy from night braids.

Other:It was COLD this morning, around 24 degrees.   :o  And I wore a skirt to work.   :D  Why is it that the cold weather makes me want to wear skirts and dresses, eh?   :-?  The word daft comes to mind...
This Saturday evening is the installation of officers ceremony at St. Mark's #93 Masonic Lodge.  Hubby will be installed as Junior Warden, which means he gets to cook for the guys next year.   :)  Family members are welcome at the ceremony, so Yours Truly will be present.  I plan on wearing a long black velour skirt with a slit up one side topped by a sheer white ruffly blouse.   :)

Yeah, perhaps if you do the long coat you won't have to worry about the draft.  I personally prefer wearing dresses and skirts all of the time but I've yet to find a way to wear them in colder weather without a long coat or tights.

Other:  Whew, sorry I've been gone for a while.  Last Thursday and Friday I was out sick with a UTI   >:(   My lower back was aching, so I figured something was up.  But I saw a doctor Friday morning, who confirmed my self diagnosis   ;)  and he prescribed a lurvley antibiotic that's clearing everything up.  Then today I had my pap test and annual exam with my gyno (the same doctor who performed my surgery in 2003).  He, the gyno, asked, "How long has it been?"  (since the whole hysterectomy/cancer thing).  Four years, says I.  "Four years...you know it's very, very, very unlikely that the cancer will return at this point," he says, smiling.  I think so, too, says I, giving him a return smile.   :)  And yes, he used the word 'very' three times.  I had blood drawn for a CA125 and I'll get the results of that test within a couple of days.  Life is good.   8-)

Thanksgiving is next week, can you friggin' believe it?!   :o

Our department secretary is going on vacation starting tomorrow, and will not return until Monday the 26th.  Which means Yours Truly will be stuck out front most of the time.  Entries may be sporadic at best, but you know I'll be thinking about y'all.   :-*

Wednesday 14 November 2007
Hair:  Wash day, hair is down.  A coworker just said, "Man, your hair is REALLY long."   :)

Other:  So, yeah, I'm sitting out front, womaning the reception area.  It's terribly quiet and pretty darn boring.  The phone isn't even ringing a lot.  *shrug*  Oh well, who am I to complain.  I'm reading a book loaned to me by our division VP, who also enjoys writing.  The book is called "Hooked" and was written by Les Edgerton.  It's about "writing fiction that grabs readers at page one and never lets them go"   :)  I'm only on page 9, but I've already learned some good tips.  I haven't written in a few days, but hiatuses are normal for me.
I woke up yesterday to find one of the toes on my left foot slightly swollen and achy in the joint.  It's still swollen and achy today.  This has never happened before and, no, I didn't stub it.  Arthritis?  Possibly.  Strange that it's only affecting one toe, though.  Then this morning I woke up to find I have developed a fever blister in the left corner of my mouth!   >:(  I haven't had a fever blister in years!  First the UTI, then the toe, and now the fever blister.  What the heck?!   :-?

Hair:  No wash day; hair is in a segmented ponytail.

Other:I have a feeling my "maladies" were side effects of the antibiotic I was taking for the UTI.  I have now finished that course of pills and hopefully my body will return to normal soon.  Like now.   :)
Three days down covering for the secretary, three more to go.  Things have been very quiet, knock wood, and they'd darned well better stay that way.
I, well, hubby and I found out today that his mother has invited a guest to our house for Thanksgiving.   :o  It's not so much that she invited someone, it's the fact that she didn't bother to ask us if it was all right to do so.  It's not like her to not alert us first, and it's not as if we would have said "no".  Still...this means a serious bout of cleaning must happen between now and Thursday morning instead of the "good enough" swiping I was going to do.   :(  Oh well  *shrug*  The guest is an elderly lady who lives alone, so chances are her eyesight is less than perfect!   ;D
I'm so glad it's Friday.  Hubby has already done most of the laundry (what a sweetie) and I'll be able to focus on getting a lot of the cleaning done.  Y'all have a good weekend and be safe.  *hugs*

Hang in there Trisha.  Although you are worried about how your house will look, I would bet the guest of your mother's will be happy to share your Thanksgiving dinner, regardless of the condition of your house.  My mother is one of those elderly widows that is grateful for a Thanksgiving invite (and I'm glad people invite her - it reduces my guilt!).  So, try to think more about sharing your table, house and friendliness and not worry so much about the dust bunnies!

Amen to that, BB   ;)

Hair:  Wash day with Pantene's Brilliant Brunette.  Also did a vinegar rinse.

Other:  I was a busy bee Saturday.  I had the house to myself; hubby was gone to a lodge meeting in St. Louis and Brother In Law was on a run.  So I stacked a couple of wheelbarrows of firewood closer to the back door, changed out the kitty litter, did some dusting, did the laundry, vacuumed, cleaned the bathroom, and Swiffer-mopped the floors.  Whew!   [smiley=shocked.gif] It felt good, though, to get things done on MY time and not have to work around everybody else's schedules and plans.  Wednesday evening, or Thursday morning, I'll do another light cleaning, if nothing else, for the bathroom.  I always feel like the entire house is clean when the bathroom is clean!   :)

We have a 3-day week here at the university, as we'll be closed on Thursday and Friday.  I'm still womaning the front desk, and expect things to remain calm and quiet.  I haven't been writing because there are too many interruptions when I'm out front.  But it's acceptible that I'm not writing because, using what I've learned from the how-to book, Hooked, I have a lot of revisions to make...as in, EVERYthing needs revising.  That's okay, though, because it's a learning process.  It's progress.  It's evolution.  And my writing continues to evolve.   :)

Hair:No-wash day.  Hair is up in a bun.  I'll probably wash tomorrow just for the hey of it.

Other:I got my Secret Santa assignment yesterday--YAY!   :)  I can't wait to get started.
One and a half more days of womaning the front desk for our secretary.  I'll be so happy to return to my little office.  One coworker has been monopolizing my time for hours today.  This morning he talked for a good hour and when he returned from lunch he talked for at least an hour and a half.  He won't shut up!!   >:(  He's a nice guy, but for the love of Mike, SHUT UP ALREADY!  It would be different if the topics were interesting, but they're not.  Now I know why our secretary is half crazed by the end of each day.
As usual, tomorrow the university will dismiss all "non-essential" personnel early.  It makes the president look good and there would be a riot of biblical proportions if we didn't dismiss early.   :)  Yours Truly will be staying behind, as I volunteered to do, until my boss shoos me outta here.

Hair:Broke routine with a shampoo + condition this morning.  Haven't decided how I'm going to wear my hair tomorrow.  It's funny...the decision used to be what clothes I would wear.  Now it's which hairstyle.   :)  Priorities change, as they should, over time.  Of course the smart thing for tomorrow would be to wear the hair up and out of the way, since we'll be busy cooking, etc.  I'm thinking a segmented ponytail.

Other:Last day of womaning the front desk--I did it!   :)  To be honest, I wasn't certain I could handle 6 days in The Chair.  Thank you, God, for keeping things quiet.  Well, tomorrow is Thanksgiving, a day of feasting and celebration.  I'm thankful for a lot of things, too many to list here.  I will mention a few, though...first on the list comes my health.  I'm tremendously thankful for being given a second chance at life.  It could so easily have gone the other way...I'm thankful for my family and friends (not the least of which are my LL family--because I *do* consider all of you family).  I'm thankful that I live in a country that allows me to speak my mind and pursue just about any dream I can think up.  What are you thankful for?   8-)

I'm also thankful to have all you LL people, since you're really the only people I talk to every day(except those I share a house with)... I think you ladies and lords are keeping me sane. Hair:No-wash day.  Tried a new style this morning and I'm really loving it.  I  braided my hair in two plaits on either side of my head, right behind my ears, securing the ends with colorful bands.  Then I twisted the two braids together into a bun of sorts, fixing it into place with my "french bun clip"  http://www.vermontcountrystore.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=32424&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=729&iSubCat=795&iProductID=32424

Other:My daughter left for Memphis yesterday evening, so the house is once again quiet.  At least she remembered this time to call when she arrived, to let her old mother know she arrived safely.  The last visit, she forgot to call and it was two days before I heard from her.   ;D  Oh, that whacky kid of mine!
It was very cold and foggy this morning as I drove to work.  At one point during the drive the fog was so bad that I had to drop my speed down to 35 mph (on a state highway) because I could barely see 10 feet in front of me.   :o  Luckily no deer ran out in front of me...that would have been catastrophic.

Other:  Did I tell y'all about the vintage Argus camera my father in law gave me?  I don't think I did...well, back in the winter of 1958 my father in law was stationed temporarily in Goose Bay, at the air base in Labrador (Canada) and he bought an Argus 35mm C3 Rangefinder.  He used it for years and eventually just quit using it.  He and my mother in law were doing some cleaning earlier this year and the Argus was discovered.  He presented it to me (he lurves me, can ya tell?!) and I put it in my closet for safe keeping.  Just a few weeks ago I remembered I had it (duh), and printed from the internet a super-complete instruction manual.  A coworker, a camera buff, found out I have the Argus and gave me 4 rolls of 35mm film to "blow".  She wasn't going to use the film because to her it's old (she got it last year for Christmas), but to us average everyday photogs the film is still very usable.  So, with the help of the manual, I taught myself how to load this thing and how to shoot pictures.  It's just tremendously cool using this old Argus--very satisfying.  I've shot about 2/3 of the current roll, just scenery mostly, and need to finish it up so I can have the film developed.  I'm dying to know if I'm shooting correctly and/or if the camera is still in top notch condition.

Aren't vintage cameras cool? The first one I used as a photo student was an old '70's (I think) Canon...I like that old *clack!* sound that they make when the shutter closes.  8-)

Hair:I washed last Sunday, the 25th, and again this morning.  I probably could have avoided washing this morning by wearing a ponytail or a bun, but the top part of my hair was icky greasy.  So today it's clean and hanging down.  Yesterday I again wore the "braid bun", as I'm calling it, and I'm really loving that style.

Other:After today I have 10 more working days until my Christmas vacation.  EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!     :D   :D   :D   Ahem...Okay, I'm calm again.    I can't believe tomorrow is the first day of December.  Where the heck did the rest of the year go?!   :-?
The cold air and dry heat combination is taking its toll on my skin, and I'm having to slather on lotion or aloe gel every time I think about it.  Of course, as we age our bodies tend to get drier by the year anyway, so that's not helping.
Plans for the weekend include a little grocery shopping, getting together the rest of the package for my secret santa, laundry, and as much R&R as I can get away with.  Oh, that reminds me...do I have a box in which to ship the goodies to my SS?  Hmm....
Y'all have a good one!   :)

Monday 3 December 2007

Hair:Today is the last in a no-wash cycle.  For three days my style of choice has been the braid bun.  Love it!  It's functional, yet stylish.  Tomorrow should be wash day, unless the crown isn't greasy.

Other:Old brownie, my faithful car, is in the shop.  She sprung an anti freeze leak and hubby is hoping it's only a cracked hose (i.e., an inexpensive fix).  I told him the car could simply sit for a while, if the repair is going to be costly.  He can always chauffer me to work and back.  --Like I ever complain about being the drivee instead of the driver.   :)
9 days until my Christmas vacation begins...   ::)  I want badly to do some sewing (long skirts) while I'm off from work.  But fabric has gotten so expensive I don't know if we can afford it.  I guess it won't hurt to look...

That is interesting how people give names to their vehicles ;)

I have only owned four cars in my life so far and I have never even thought of giving them a personal name ::)
The closest I ever came to that was the 1975/1976 (everything was 1975 but the engine)  Firebird I bought from my older brother.  I got personalized plates for it which was 76BIRD.

Here's hoping it's an inexpensive fix, Trish.
Believe me, I know what a nightmare costly auto repair bills can be!  :o

I know--people are bad about trying to humanize everything within their grasp.  I usually don't name my vehicles.  But this is a dark brown 1984 Chevy Citation II with so much character that it simply begged to be named!   ;D

Tuesday 4 December 2007

Hair:  I washed this morning, even though I probably could have gone one more day without doing so.  Since I wear my hair down when it's clean, I thought it could use a break from being worn up for three days in a row.
At another forum (on frugality), I ran across a link to this interesting article:
http://babyslime.livejournal.com/174054.html?page=1#why
I'll also post this link in the general chit chat area because, as damaging as it is to my ego, I realize that not everyone reads my journal.   ::)  Anyway, I find the concept fascinating of using only baking soda in water to clean hair.  And I'm already using the vinegar rinses, so that's not a giant leap.  I don't know for sure yet, but I think I may try it.

Other:  8 more days until my Christmas vacation.   :)
Old Brownie has been repaired and is waiting faithfully for me to collect her after work today.  The problem turned out to be a broken water pump, resulting in a bill of $202.  Not too cheap, but certainly not the most expensive vehicular bill we've been handed.  *shrug*  What are ya gonna do?
It's about time to buy a new spiral bound notebook to serve as my handwritten journal.  Yep, I still do it the old fashioned way.   :)  To me there's nothing better than putting pen to paper and watching the ink flow onto the pages.
I hesitate to mention this next item, for several reasons, but...oh what the hey.  I'm in the midst of a self-imposed skirt challenge.  I did this back in October and, except for one day, was successful.  The challenge is to wear skirts or dresses every day for a month--no pants/shorts.  I began on Saturday, the first of December and, if successful, will finish on December 31.......unless I decide to go skirts-only in 2008.  I have to admit, I absolutely enjoy wearing skirts all the time.  I feel so different when I'm wearing skirts, more feminine, and my attitude generally improves.  Now for me, I can't wear just any skirt.  I prefer longer lengths, at the very least mid-calf or lower.  And I am very capable of sewing my own simple skirts but, to repeat myself, I may have to wait for our financial situation to improve.  That's okay, though...Lord knows I'm nothing if not patient.   ;)
P.S. Suddenly I'm at the level of "stardust"--how awesome!!   8-)

Other than pajama pants, I'm a skirt only girl too.  I have to agree it feels far better, Well, to be fair, the summer does come with sweat and chafing, but that can be fixed by bloomers, shorts underneath, or hose.

My theory on skirts is, 'if I don't have to lift the hem to safely go up stairs, they're not long enough'... Which probably gives some sort of view into the mind of the K.  ::)

oh yes, happy Stardusting. ;)

Glad to hear that the repair bill wasn't too steep. Heck, regular maintenance for my car is more than that. But sucky that it has to happen right before Christmas. Ugh...  :P  One can never have enough $$$ this time of year, can they?

As for baking soda...I tried using it in my hair once and not only is it bloody near impossible to rinse out, it dried the #%&$ out of my poor hair.  :(  That and I refuse to put an abrasive substance anywhere near my hair. Egad...do be careful if you decide to do this, Trish!

BTW...welcome to the Stardust circle.  8-)

Wednesday 5 December 2007

Hair: No wash day; back to the braid bun.  Well, I've read and reread the article on cleaning one's hair with baking soda in warm water, thus eliminating the need for commercial shampoo.  It SEEMS as if this method will work effectively but...I don't know.  It almost seems too good to be true.  I'm still undecided about giving this method a try.   :-?

Other: It's a very wintery day here in Southeast Missouri.  There's a cold wind blowing and the sky looks like snow.  And I'm still wearing a skirt.   :)  Day 5 of the skirts-only challenge.  Granted, it's a long skirt but that's the sort I prefer.  I'm wearing knee socks with tall boots to keep me warm.
7 more days until Christmas vacation!  :)

Thursday 6 December 2007

Hair:  Another no-wash day; sides are slightly greasy and are held back with barettes today.  The length is hanging down my back.  I need to ask hubby for another hair photo.  I had one taken at the beginning of this year; I should have another to show year end progress.  Still haven't decided on the no shampoo (diluted baking soda) method of hair cleansing.  While I'm on vacation I may give it a whirl, so if my hair gets messed up I don't have to be seen in public!

Other:  Cold again today but the sun is out in full force.  Tomorrow or Saturday the temperatures will begin to rise, thus bringing the area some rain.  Whew, I sound like a weather girl...   :)
I'm doing very well with my month long skirt challenge.  Loving it, in fact.  I've been praying for enough money on my next paycheck to buy fabric for at least two skirts.  It should take about 8 yards total, 4 yards per skirt, in order to make the hems long the way I want them.  If I can find some fabric with a good price (read:  cheap) this shouldn't cost over $25.  Obviously I'm not about to put us in a bind budget wise in order to satisfy one of my personal urges.  I *really* want to wear skirts more often, possibly even all of the time.  But there are certain conditions that have to be met.  I want the skirts long enough so that in the wintertime, like now, I can wear knee socks and boots, and in the warmer times I can wear sandals or loafers.  Honestly, it's a pain in the caboose fiddling with stockings or hosiery of any kind.  I already have banned pantyhose from my life a looooooooooooong time ago.  They are EVIL, period.  Knee hi hosiery and trouser socks are fine, as long as my hem is long enough to hide the evidence.  Thigh hi stockings are painful to my skin.  So, yes, hemlines are key here.  *sigh*  This is an exercise in patience for Yours Truly.   8-)  It's driving me a little crazy not being able to simply "go and do".   But it's all right...if God wants me to do this, then HE WILL provide a way.
Hubby's gone to a lodge meeting this evening, so I think after work today I'll finish my Secret Santa shopping.  I have some ideas as to the finishing goodies but nothing definite.  I'll just know it/them when I see it/them.   ;)
6 more days until Christmas vacation.   ::)

You're right pantyhose are evil!  I can't even remember the last time I've worn a pair.
Good luck with the baking soda experiment and the skirt situation.  Long skirts and dresses are so comfortable and heavenly. :D

If you get your husband to take a hair pic will you post it?  I'd love to see your progress.

I know, pantyhose are a pain :P  Have you ever tryed a nice soft pair of tights? I use to wear skirts at my old job and found that tights that were one size bigger then my normal size wear very comforable.  Plus they hid the tattoos on my legs. 8-)

Title: Re: Trisha's Tresses 2007
Post by La Diosa on Dec 7th, 2007 at 4:35pm
Thats a good suggestion Lisabelle! :D  I sometimes wear "soft" tights as well.  They are more comfy than pantyhose and they help keep warm when wearing skirts.

Monday 10 December 2007

Hair:  Washed Saturday (with Zest soap, of all things!) and did a vinegar rinse.  It's an experiment to find out if I can give up commercial shampoo and conditioner.

Other:  On the subject of tights vs pantyhose...I haven't worn tights since elementary school.   :)  I guess I've been under the assumption that tights fit as close to the body as pantyhose, presenting a similar EVIL.  The bad aspect of pantyhose is that they're so tight they tend to not allow breathing in a certain area of the body (ahem), thus contributing to all sorts of infections and bacteria, etc.  But if tights fit more loosely than pantyhose, then perhaps I should give them a try.   ::)
Poor Old Brownie...  :-/  Now the brakes aren't working properly.  Hubby thinks it's a leak in the line.  Our mechanic estimates it should take less than $100 to fix, but that's money we don't have right now.  So she'll take a little break until my next payday on the 21st.  It's always something...   :)
My secret santa package is finally going out today.  I received my goodies on Friday.  Thanks again, Lisabelle!   ;)  *hugs*
4 more days until Christmas vacation!!!!

Aw c'mon, gals, what do you think shampoo is made of...?  --Soap or detergent.  Those are the bases for the majority of commercial shampoos on the market today.   :)  Zest is just shampoo in a solid state!   ;D  What do you suppose the people back in the 1800s and early 1900s used to clean their hair?  Soap--probably their own homemade lye soap.  *shrug*  Ain't no big thing, sisters.   8-)  Besides, this is only an experiment.  If I find the soap to be somehow damaging for my hair then I'll return to the bottled stuff.

Hair:  I asked hubby to measure my length this morning and came up with 33 inches.  Not bad, when I started out the year with 27--a 6 inch gain for 2007.   :)

Other:  This is what's happening in my little corner of the world:
http://www.semissourian.com/story/1296657.html

Five unsolved murders in my hometown solved, in one fell swoop, like a Christmas miracle.  Un-friggin-believable...the whole area is in a state of grateful disbelief.  Thank God that these families finally have some measure of closure.

Answer: Free will. The thing that allows some people to do good allows others to do evil. This is how our souls are measured. As for "humane" executions, there really is no such thing. Civil as the government tries to make it, you're still taking another person's life. I say if you really want justice, let the victims' families have their way with the criminals! Um, EXcluding the trim, which only took off about an inch, I think.   :)

Other:  This is day 12 of my skirts-only challenge for the month of December.  Thus far I have not been even tempted to wear pants.  There are some various articles of clothing and footwear that I could definitely use, but those will have to wait.
Oh!  I have to tell you about my new suit!!  Yesterday the secretary for my department presented me with a brand spankin' new suit, a classy black jacket and skirt, tags still on and everything.  A friend of her mother's had died recently and they were helping to clean out her closet.  This lady was a shopaholic who never bought cheap stuff.  By the pricetags, this is a $100 suit.   :o  And she gave it to ME...I was so floored, I almost started to cry.   :)

Hair:  Eh, I washed this morning.  For my last working day of 2007, I wanted to leave everyone with an impression of clean hair.   :)  (Just for Angel and Lisa, I used regular shampoo/conditioner!)   ;D

Other:  This is my 14th day of skirts-only and I'm still loving it.

It's terribly cold here today with a snow/ice prediction for later tonight (midnight perhaps).  Old Man Winter can do his worst...as long as he waits until after I get home this evening!   ;D

Well, here it is...my last day of work for 2007.  When I first requested this time off it seemed so far away.  Yet here it is; only 4 hours left and counting.   :)
When I'm away from my high speed computer at work, I tend not to log on (at home).  So don't be surprised if y'all don't see another entry from me until 2008.  I wish each of you a safe and happy holiday season, and a blessed new year.

You see how much I love all of you?  I'm braving the agony of dial-up just to visit.   ;D  Actually response time isn't too terrible, although I can't figure out how to access my regular Yahoo mail account.  *sigh*  Oh well.

Hair:  Monday morning I washed with Zest soap (top of the head only) and rinsed with diluted vinegar.  No problems yet from using simple soap.

Other:  While I'm on vacation, hubby and I are cleaning/straightening/rearranging the basement.  Oy vey, what a chore.  The problem is that this house has become a repository for several different people, over several different generations.  Not only is our stuff stored here, but so too is some of my daughter's, my stepson's, and my sister's things.  AND I have also inherited the job of keeper for the "handed down" things; items that once belonged to my parents, my grandparents (on both sides) and even sone great- and great-great grandparental posessions.  A lot of those items are antiques (dishes, etc.) that I would never part with.  But we've been condensing the stuff into boxes and have found lots of extra space.  We're about halfway through the (full size) basement and will continue the cleaning process today.  I plan on tackling my closet tomorrow and am almost dreading that chore more than the entire basement!!   ;D

I put up my Christmas tree yesterday...it took me about 5 minutes.  Well, before you think me Superwoman, the entire tree is about half a foot high.   ;D  It's a miniature tree lit with fiber optics and it fits perfectly on top of the tv.  Sorry, but that's the best I can do this year.  I simply couldn't face having to rearrange furniture, drag the heavy tree up the basement stairs, drag upstairs two boxes of lights and ornaments, erect the tree and decorate it, and then try to keep the cats from scaling the thing.  Sorry--no way.

Well, it's a little after 9 o'clock in the morning.  I've already showered and eaten breakfast, and had better get dressed.  I'll check in another day, if the dial-up gods allow.   :)  Be safe!

I've got a mini tree too. about a foot tall, fiberoptic... It's actually rather nice having a christmas tree that fits on top of my computer. I've got a black rose hair pin that I'm using for the star on top of the tree, and in place of ornaments, I've got blue roses. :D

Good luck on cleaning out the closet, Trish... I know even for me, who doesn't have much extra clothing... it wouldn't be easy.
