Title: frazzled hair
Post by Debr on Mar 9th, 2007 at 2:25pm
While looking at my hair this morning, I discovered a section that is dry and frazzled looking  :'(. It is probably damage from the sun and my hairfryer(I air dry now). Could I put just 2-3 drops of olive oil in my hands and then run my hands along the section of hair that is frazzled? Would that make that section of hair look oily? Also, if I were to oil my hair b4 going to bed, how much oil would I use?  The section of hair that is frazzled is close to scalp.  Would applying the oil help to keep new damage from appearing? How often would I do this. Thanks.

Sorry for your distressed tresses, Debr. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to "reverse" damage, but oiling will certainly help it look and feel a bit better, as well as moisturize the new growth.

The best suggestion I could offer would be to experiment with how much oil you can put into the strand without having it look greasy. Start out with probably 1 or 2 and move up to 3 or more if you need it. Also, if it's just one small section, it shouldn't matter that much if it gets a little greasy.

How much oil you use overnight is entirely up to you. I tend to load my hair up with EVOO for overnight and just wash it out in the morning. I wouldn't recommend applying oil directly to the scalp as this can cause breakouts. Your scalp produced sebum, which moisturizes new hairs as they grow out.

Try to be patient and get regular trims. Hopefully new growth will replace the fried strand soon. God bless.  :)

Jojoba oil is very close to the sebum our bodies make, you might want to use a couple of drops of that on this area (less of an oily look) and then put evoo on your ends or continue to the ends with the jojoba.  I have textured hair like you -all curlies and wavies- our hair can be really dry.  Personally I like coconut oil best, and sesame, which is really lubricating but my scalp is dry and that's mostly where I use that, along with my whole body because all of my skin is dry.

Yes you can do this, but it would just coat it rather than moisturise it, i would suggest shea butter or leave in conditioner

Would that make that section of hair look oily?

Yes very oily i only use 2 drops for my whole head

Also, if I were to oil my hair b4 going to bed, how much oil would I use?

A drop for every 10 inches of hair you have

The section of hair that is frazzled is close to scalp.  Would applying the oil help to keep new damage from appearing?

Yes it would as it protects the hair from wear and tear, however you would need to team this with other good hair habits for best results

How often would I do this.

After a full hair wash apply 2 drops on dry hair, then each day apply half a drop on the ends if your hair is very long, or dry.

WOW!!!  Thank you all of you for the wonderful suggestions  ;D ;D.  Part of the problem with that section of hair is damage, but also my hair is getting older, there is some kinky grey hair, some silky white straight hair, and then my natural hair color.  It seems as tho they are all fighting for dominance right now  :(.  I am not sure what to do with it tho cuz the natural hair is close to the scalp, adding more oil mite make it oiler, but I am sure the grey & white hairs would be ok w/oil.  I dusted the area yesterday & I'll wash it in the morning.  Perhaps I will add 1-3 drops evoo tonite.  Again thanks

Good Morning all  ;D.  The sun is shining, the birds are singing, not a cloud in the sky.  What a glorious day!!  I was looking at my frazzled area of hair last nite and realized the hair barretts I am using could be a lot of my problem also.  Sooooo, for church I braided my bangs back since that is the section of hair I was using the barretts for.  I had to braid it 3 times to get it down the middle and still looked fairly wonky, but I gotta learn sometime.  So today my hair is totally down.  Where can I find some hair safe barretts?  I am on the west coast.  Kmart, Walmart, Costco, any of those are cheap but not safe for me.

Thanks, Debr
