I just bought some coconut oil and thought I'd google it, and I came up with this website which was RAVING about the oil and acv.  Since I know a lot of people here have one or both of those things on hand, thought you might enjoy this.

Hi,

I am on a lot of meds that toast my hair and saw this.  I know coconut is a good oil in food and cannot see why it would not be good on hair...but what is ACV?  Pls fill me in.  Always busting my a** to keep up with the affects of my meds.

ACV = apple cider vinegar

Coconut oil can work well to moisturize hair.  Common oils used are jojoba oil, olive oil and coconut oil.

Where do you buy and how do you use the oil? I love coconut, and we always have olive oil in the house. My 91 yr.old m-i-l uses olive oil on her short hair (rub it in, plastic bag it over night, then wash in the morning). My hair is to my waist. Do I follow the same procedure? Do I use the oil from the scapl or just on the ends? I use a conditioner when I shampoo, but I keep feeling like I need something else.

Donna,

FYI, that font is REALLY hard to read!!

You can get coconut oil at health food stores and I have read on this forum before that you can get it at Walmart.  I just oil the ends for the most part.  Different people do different things depending on thier hair.  Others will tell you how they do it, this is just my way...which may not be right for you.

Good luck.

lol, my eyes were about crossed trying to read that!
i used olive oil to begin with, and it really softened my hair, but it tends to be a lot heavier than coconut or jojoba oils.  i use coconut now, and just on the ends.  it's best to start with just a few drops and see how much is right for your hair and how much it can absorb.
i found coconut right at my local grocer, but i know a lot of people have to order it or go to a health food store.
another easy thing to try is really dousing your hair with your favorite conditioner, put it in a braid or bun, and sleep with it overnight.

Stacy, I am curious.  You say that you use a couple of 'drops' of coconut oil.  Is it liquid what you use?  I ask because mine is solid.  They say it is cold compressed so it is better for cooking with because instead of empty calories you get good nutrition with it since, other  than cold compressed, nutrients are lost in the processing.

If you use liquid, I wonder if anyone can tell us which is better for the hair, if either.

I just find the liquid more convenient to use.  I use it for my hair, making lip balm, lotions and as an ingredient in body butters.  Just my preference, ladies! :)

Curly, I saw your comment and understand that the oil is probably a little easier.

I did read the sites that Stacyp put up and found that individuals claimed that the cold pressed was better.  I really cannot see why it would make a difference for hair, and of course they are not just talking about hair.

Having read the sites that Stacyp posted, I did try using it on my body skin (not my face) and it did not absorb after 15 minutes (I gave it 1 hour) so then I showered with a gentle soap.  I have to admit...while I could not put clothes on or sit for the hour, my skin does feel much softer and in better condition.  I have not looked after myself while I have been sick.  So, yes, it is greasy, but my first experience is good overall.  I will try it again in a day or so and let you know if I feel the same.   FYI, my feet are REALLY dry so I have put oil on them and proper moisture socks for the night to see how that goes.  I would do my hand, but I cannot find the gloves to do them overnight.

So, now I am signing off and going to try sitting with EVCO on my hands for an hour before I go to bed.  I doubt it will work (me doing it I mean) since I cannot sit without using my hands for an hour!!

Oh, I forgot to mention, apparently animals love coconut oil...They keep trying to lick it off me!!!  And in case people did not know...coconut milk and oil are great laxatives so I don't want my animals licking it off me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol..my dog gets all googly eyed when i use coconut oil on myself.  he acts like i rubbed myself down with a raw steak. weird.
mine's cold compressed (the oil, not the dog), and when i buy it it's solid, but if i set on my dresser it's liquid within an hour.  i read about people who talk about the solid and i guess maybe because i live in a warm climate and abhor air conditioning, mine won't stay a solid?  i don't eat it, as a habit, like the people on the site do, (something about voluntarily injesting all that fat makes me uneasy, even though it is a good fat), i just have extra virgin cold compressed because it's the only stuff i could find that was pure coconut oil.
i have a problem with it absorbing too, unless i'm right out of the shower it takes a while.  which i kind of like because it makes me all glisten-y and makes my legs and shoulders look like they've been photoshopped.
does it make you feel hot when you put it on?

Stacyp,  oils are more complicated than most people think...and I am not an expert on this but I do know that oils contain nutrients that will break down at high temperatures...subsequently, different oils are good at different temperatures.  I know that while EEVO is one of the best at room temp...it is awful for cooking if you are looking for maintaining the nutrients.

As for the coconut oil, they say it should be kept in the fridge...that said...I need a chisel to get any when I need it when it is chilled!!!  Kind of a pain.

Coconut oil is good at low temps, so I use it instead of butter on my aspargus but that is a taste thing and I happen to love cocount!!!

I have a chart from a health food store about what oils are good for which temperatures (as I said, this is not my area of expertise but I have done a little research on it).  I will ask my husband if he can scan it and I can put it on a site for people to look at it should they be interested.  I remember that peanut oil is good for deep frying or woking.  Other than that...drawing a blank.  I will see if I can find the chart and get hubby to put it up for me.  He is away right now...and I cannot think where the chart is...so it could take a while.

And remember Stacyp (and this does fall into my work area), some fat is needed in the diet...but being picky about getting good nutrients and 'good' cholesterol is important.  I see you are :D

Sorry this is a little vague, but I do not want to say something that is not right...and I do know what I have said at this point is correct.

Oh ya, any fat you eat in the form of an oil should in theory be cold pressed so that the nutrients are not toasted during the processing phase.  That said, I do not pretend to do that, since it is expensive....not the stuff you buy for $5 in the grocery store.  Oh ya, and light will damage good oils so you should wrap them in tin foil if they are in a clear container...even in the fridge.

Hubby said he would scan...I will just have to check for a copyright on it.  It is a really nice chart....will I still have to find.   ::)  But if it helps, I hope people will enjoy it.

Sorry, me again.  I said a couple of days ago that on the body or hair  I doubt if the oil needs to be cold compressed or to have all the nutrients that  you might want in food.  I said that because, while in food we want nutrients for our calories, if coconut, cocoa (OMG I love what this does for my hair once I rinse the greasiness from it) and jojoba oil (and probabably more that I do not know about yet) are the right molecular size to combine with our hair...since hair is dead...go for it, cold compressed or not.  We don't need to pay the extra if the molecules work since the nutrients preserved by cold compressed will not really matter.

i never thought about it being damaged by warmth.  i wonder if it matters though, when you're using it as moisturizer, instead of using it on food.

god, i heard my mom say ONE more time how i NEED fat in my diet and explain good fats vs. bad fats i was going to strangle myself.  it just kind of grosses me out to think of swallowing a spoonful of oil everyday.

I don't think it will make a difference if you have the cold compressed stuff or noot for topical use.

I could never eat a spoonfuled as suggest in the site you posted above.  As I said, I get it on my asparagus, butter on my bread, etc.  Many veggies like avacado (and of course then there are the meats, fishes and dairy products) contain all the fat you need in a day.

I've been reading your posts, and if it is ok, I'll put my 2 cents in!
Why not use flax seed oil if you are going to ingest oil?  You can either put it in your salad, smoothie, oatmeal etc.  You just don't drink it,it won't do anything for you.  You'd have to mix it with something in order for it to have benefit.  I've used it on my salads, vegan smoothies etc.  Why not give it a try?  It does have to be refridgerated  though and used within the exp. date or it goes rancid.  Alittle pricey, but well worth it!

As I recall, flax seed contains a lot of protein (the actual seed, not the oil)...that could be wrong, but anyway, I do use it in my smoothies, but now when I cook, I find the flavour too strong...but that is just me.

I use coconut oil on my ends when they feel dry. It's also a good oil to use when you want to put strength back into your hair. :)

i love coconut oil, i eat 3 tablespoons full a day, i use it as a moisturiser, i deep and light oil with it too on my hair.

All organic oil solidifies, i put mine on my radiator to get it to an oil, never microwave as it takes the goodness out.

I love it!!

you never put coconut oil in the fridge, theres no need it has a shelf life of 4 years...no wonder you needed a chisel!! some do freeze it though to use on top of ice cream, that doesn't appeal to me though i like it better on toast or in a jacket potato much nicer

Joanne,

Sorry to disagree with you but you should refidgerate coconut oil if it is a good quality.  ALL oils should say "cold pressed' on them if they are of good quality.  If they are not cold pressed (which is the process by which they extract the oil from...in this case the coconut) then a whole lot of nutrients have already been toasted and you might as well leave it on a shelf.  Yes, even with the cold pressed it does have a long shelf life but that does not mean that leaving it out will maintain the nutrients.

Here is another thought for you all.  Have you ever noticed that the cheap bulk oils sold in a store are in clear glass?  There is a reason for this.  The more expensive ones are kept in dark glass to shield them from light which prevents them from losing nutrients.  Many people actually put tin foil around the bottles to further seal the light out even if they are in a dark bottle.

This all said, I don't keep my coconut oil in the fridge during the winter as I tend not to use it orally, just topically.  Perhaps this is a mistake on my part.  I don't really know.  I do know, it is a pain in the rear end to use it when it has been in the fridge.  You really do need a chisel!!

JD

Old topic, I know but it is pertinent to my situation. I quoted this person just to say my 2 cents about coconut oil: When it is cool or cold,it turns to a solid. At a certain level of heat, it will be an oil (staring at my bottle of coconut oil that is right now very solid, but over the whole summer it was very much a liquid!) Any "oil" that stays in liquid form when the temperature is low isn't really coconut oil or must have a ton of some other ingredient in it....
ANyway I have used coconut oil as my facial moisturizer for the past 2 years. It saved my skin. It's so exfoliating yet moisturizing and just.. amazing.
Anyway... back on topic haha. I am starting to oil my scalp again with coconut oil every other night or so in the winter to prevent dandruff (my skin dries easily). Just a tip to anyone that might want to try it. Coconut oil really is a wonder oil!!

Peace~

I got all excited about coconut oil a year or so ago. I'm hypothyroid and some websites claim that it can treat that condition. I took myself off my thyroid pills and tried it for about four months, using it instead of margarine and for cooking. As much as I wanted it to work, it didn't, and my health suffered until I went back on the pills. I still use it instead of other oils sometimes because I believe that it is a healthy oil, but only the organic, cold-pressed oil (when it's hydrogenated it's just as bad as hydrogenated palm and any others -- BTW, organic palm is also a healthy oil.)

I use organic expeller-pressed coconut oil in my 82% organic hemp oil soap & shampoo bar (Smallbones: described under the Burt's Bees discussion). It is a liquid above 76F degrees and solidifies below that. I also use it on my skin, just a bit rubbed in every night. It feels a little greasy for a while, but absorbs relatively quickly and doesn't leave grease marks on my pillowcase. If you do a web search for organic coconut oil, you'll find quite a few suppliers. I haven't used it on its own on my hair, but now I'll try it on the ends as recommended by others here!
