Title: summer tips
Post by Debr on May 15th, 2007 at 4:45pm
OK, summer is coming on quickly here.  As we know, my hair is thigh length, growing rapidly, and very thick and heavy.  I tried putting it in bun this morning, but I started to get a headache after about 15 min of it being up.  Sooo-do any of you know another type hairdo to get it off of my neck for summer heat?  In order to braid my hair, I need a third arm with a very large hand to handle it.  I have been looking(lurking) on other sites but I didnt see any suggestions there.  I really dont want to live on asprin all summer.  Any kind of suggestion at all would helpful.

Thanks
Debr

Have you tried putting it in a ponytail, and then adding more scrunchies or bands down the length to keep it contained?

Your headache could be due to making your bun too tight.  Either you have twisted it too tight or when you put the pins/sticks in, you used too much tension.  Try doing it with less tension.

Your hair sounds absolutely wonderful!  I can't imagine having the problems you have...long thick, and heavy hair!  Mine is thin and fine although waistlength.  I would so desire to have thick hair like yours!  Please post a picture for us sometime....I don't remember ever seeing you hair pic on here.  A ponytail should help with your problem of heavy hair in my humble opinion!

You could try two low buns.  It will keep your hair off your neck and will divide the weight of your hair.

Good Luck!

No experience of buns of course :) but just a thought from distant schooldays and boring physics' classes as far as sticky summer heat goes. Something to do with conduction and evaporation (?) of heat I think.

When it gets really bad I’ve always got around most of the irritation by wetting with water all exposed skin areas, especially my hands, arms, face and the back of my neck (!) every hour or so until dry, or until it starts getting too hot and sticky again. Most important of all the inside of one's wrists as this is the most exposed area on the whole body where major blood flow systems are closest to the skin !

Depending on the situation and subject to each individual’s reactions of course (chills or stiff necks ?) the greater amounts of surface water left on to begin with the longer lasting the benefits. So for a classroom perhaps it might be worth trying the idea out with a wet sponge and lightly dampening the underside of the bun closest to the neck every hour or two, especially as this area always takes ages to dry anyway ? Then again if it’s really hot how about a backless dress and damp hair !!  ;D

Imagine doing this in winter and (shiver !!) you’ll soon realise what I mean ! It never fails, in fact I’ve actually had to warm up on several occasions I got so cold !

Hope this helps  :)

Thanks for the suggestions.  I tried a differant type of bun last nite and it hurt.  So, I am not sure if I am twisting a hair or two wrong.  It seems like the more I have been trying to get it to go up, the more headache I have been getting. The only bun style that doesnt give me a headache right now is putting all of my hair on the top of my head.  That puts all of the weight right on top, but I have duck real low to get into my car  ;D.    But I think I might try the ponytail with scrunchie things going down the length.  That just might work.  Although, I also need a "do" for church.  Even tho the air conditioner is on, it still gets to hot in the building.  My hair is almost one length now, so as it continues to grow, hairstyles may become difficult.   I wish I was more coordinated and could braid, then it wouldnt matter how my hair looked.  Maybe I am being just too picky.

Arcadian is right about the wrists.  I get great relief with ice or cold water on my wrists due to the heat causing major problems with my MS.  Just an fyi, don't forget the backs of the knees.  Those are the biggest pulse points in the body.  Ponytail at the nap of the neck or higher and then scrunchie down every couple of inches is how I do it when it's not ultra hot.

The summer styles I do generally do involve braids unfortunately - either I have two of them so they can hang over each shoulder, or I have just the one which I can now wrap around my head and then pin (it's described on here when discussing a European politician, but can't currently find it).  Mine is about the same relative length as yours from what you say - you can get hair pins easily enough fron Claire's Accessories.

Thanks for the suggestions.  My headaches have stopped.  I think I was twisting a couple of hairs wrong or getting them caught in hair clamp thingy.  Anyways, now that all of the abuse is gone, and my hair is thick all the way to the ends, my ability to keep my hair in a bun is harder.  The weight pulls the bun out.  So, since I lost my job today, I now have some time to experiment with braids.
