Title: there is a reason why you shouldn't terp henna!!
Post by Curlgirl64 on May 30th, 2007 at 9:53pm
Well my fiasco of henna and indigo was today!!! ;D  I got a headache from the weight of all the goop on my head and slightly nauseous from terping the henna to boot!! :-?  I used 100 grams of henna and 300 grams of indigo.  I used distilled white vinegar with the henna, waited for dye release overnight. I then mixed the indigo with hot water, alot of it,too!!!  Dye release happened within 10 minutes.  There was alot of mixing too.  Added hot water to the henna to get it like a smooth yogurt consistency.  I then added 5 drops of lavender,5 drops of rosemary,5 drops of clove,5 drops of tea tree essential oils.  Mix it all up,then added the henna to the indigo.  I prepared the bathroom floor with newspaper, combed out my hair and sectioned it into 4 quarters. Put on the old tee shirt, towel(which fell off anyway),cape and gloves.  I use a tinting brush and my hands to get all my hair covered.  I started at 8 am,all covered by 10am.  I wrapped my head with saran wrap, put on a plastic shower cap and finally a turbie towel.  I had added CMG to the indigo to thicken it up so I wouldn't have alot of dripping, but I continuously had to shove cotton balls under the turbie towel to stop the dripping down my face!! ::)  So much for CMG and me waiting for the beauty coil I bought on ebay!!!
I left this on from 10 am til about 1:15pm.  I couldn't take the weight anymore.  I had a headache and felt sick from the terping!!!!  Don't terp, you'll be better off!!!!  The first time I terped I felt lightheaded and dizzy. This time sick >:(  No more terping,I'll put up with the smell!
Took me over an hour to get this out of my hair.  I used alot of conditioner, about 16 ounces of it and I watered some of it down, too.  I now sit here with my hair braided and an deep black!  Let's see what it looks like after it oxidies over the next few days.  I probably won't wash my hair tomorrow.  I oiled it with camellia oil so it feels good and I think all the grey is covered.  Hippee!!!!  Let's hope that it will still be that way for my cousin's wedding 7/07.
So all in all, don't terp henna for your hair!  Terp away for henna for body art though ;) :)

Eeeeekk!  The clove oil alone is bad for you, mixed with the others...oh my :-X.  I hope your feeling better now.  I used to burn cloves over charcoal and hold my freshly henned hands over the censer to make darker stains...but I did it outside and wore a bandana and dust mask over my face as it's toxic.  I hope your hair turns out really nice after all that ;).  Thinking of henna, its a real hot night so I did my left hand and am typing with my right! ::)

Yikes!  That sounds rough, Curlgirl64.  I hope your results are as desired and they last a really long time so you don't have to do it again too soon!!!

thanks everybody!  Yes, I am happy with the results!  It was woth it!   Since I rinsed like crazy, all the residules are out so I was dripping lear water from my braid.  No stains anywhere, thank god!!
I will take a pic as soon as it oxidizes, but take one now and then after to see if there is any change.  If I figure how to post them here I will definately show them to all of you! :)  If came out alot blacker than I anticipated, but all the grey as far as I can see is covered.  I am hoping that the next time I do this is either in August or Sept.  We shall see!!!

Curlgirl,

You have to tell what "terp" means.  I have no idea.  Is your hair jet black now all over?  Sounds exciting!!!  Can't wait to see the pics.  I once used red henna on my blonde hair and became a bright carrot-top redhead.  I loved the color, but my hair was quite short back then.

oops!  Terping is when you add things like essential oils to your henna to make it smell better.  Sometimes it's really  just better to terp the henna you're going to use for body art. Next time I'll deal with the wet hay smell!!

Ouch, sounds like you did not have a lot of fun.  I really hope that you are feeling better and that it lasts for a long time.  Looking forward to seeing a photo!!

Thanks!  It wasn't too bad all in all.  I was more organized this time and really mixed the henna till is was smooth.  I papered down the bathroom floor went slow to make sure I got all my hair right down to the scalp.  It went better than I anticipated!!!  lol
I am feeling back to my old self!!  It took a couple of hours after I rinsed everything out before I felt fine.  Still haven't washed my hair yet.  Another thing is it is harder than I thought to take a pic of your hair yourself!!!
I've got to catch my brother tomorrow morning to take a pic of it before I get to the final color.  So a pic is coming soon and then I'll post one after a wash!!! :)
