Title: terminal length at 27"
Post by strawberryfine on Feb 10th, 2008 at 11:04am
How long is your hair and do you think you have reached terminal length yet?

I am asking because I have been "stuck" at 27" for several months now and am beginning to think this may be terminal length for me.  If it is, that will be okay although I really would love to have 2-3 more inches so it will be really waist length.  It's almost waist length now.  I'm short.

I take hair vitamins, (GNC), use good quality hair tools, am gentle with my hair and do scalp massage.  I oil the ends with jojoba and shampoo twice a week and condition with a good cone-free conditioner.

Just curious if anyone else has terminal length this "short"?

TIA,

strawberryfine

The last time I measured, my hair was 25¾" and I know for a fact that I have not reached terminal length. My hair has been waist length before and right now, it's at BSL.

Hair can sometimes go through "resting" stages where it just doesn't grow at all for awhile. I have never personally experienced this, but many other members here have. A good friend of mine here named Maggie was stuck at 26" for a long time before her hair finally started to grow again.

So my advice would be to just hang in there. I've never heard of anyone reaching terminal length at 27". Just keep treating your hair well and it should wake up and start moving again eventually.  :)

i agree with Angel Spun that our hair can stop growing for a period of time then start back up again when we least expect it. my hair seemed to grow steadily for a while until it reached 24". i then noticed my hair did not grow after that. then after a few months my hair began to grow again. slowly, but it was growing. i then had a trim last month and it has just started to grow again.

also i have read from other longhairs that have knee length and longer that when our hair reaches longer lengths there tends to be a longer "resting stage" for our hair. so maybe your hair has gotten to a length ehere it needs more time for rest tha for growing.

either way i think that you havn't reached "terminal length yet.  just give it time and try not worry and within a few months you should notice some growth. :)

take care. i hope this helps :)

Your hair reaching a certain length and stopping for good is genetic related.

But as the others said, hair does go thru resting stages and that could be it too. My hair will not grow past about 3 inchs below my bra line. Drives me crazy loll.

i would just recommend to tie your hair back and forget it. My hair goes through a resting period every march until May, this is just the norm for me. i try to just concentrate on what yearly growth i get not monthly, my hair speeds up in summer so it all turns out ok in the end! this will probably be the same for you, i doubt very much you are terminal length at 27" good luck you will reach your goals, thats what makes long hair so special because we put a lot of time and effort into it but the results are so worth it xxx

Thank to everyone soooo much!

I have been not measuring for about 2 months now and am tempted to check it again.  I really hope this is just a resting phase for my hair but if this is it I will just try to take the very best care of what I have and be happy with it.

Okay, I broke down and measured today and I'm still at 27".  So I think I will try waiting for six months before I measure again and just try to be super careful with the hair I've got.  Thanks to everyone for your encouragement!

Now that it's July...how's it going?
What does BSL mean?and where does 27 fall on you?

BSL is short for bra strap length- basically mid back.  I think that 27 inches is quite short to be at terminal length, although I suppose it is possible... I think the resting stage hypothesis is more likely-- mine seems to be doing the same thing although I know it cannot be at terminal length because I've had it longer before.

Curly hair seems to have a shorter terminal length than straight hair.  However, I have seen curly hair at classic length, so I know that is possible.

Check the hair that you are shedding.  Does it have the folicle bulb on the end?  Has that hair ever been trimmed?  An uncut hair will have a more rounded end, a cut hair will usually be blunt.  If you are finding many hair with the bulb and uncut, that could be indicating that you are at your terminal length.  To try to increase your hair cycle, you could try taking a good multi-vitamin.

I've been at 26" for a couple months now... I will measure again in the beginning of August. My longest was somewhere around 27-28" before I cut quite a bit off, so I know this isn't my terminal length... just hoping 28" isn't my terminal length... still a wee bit too short. Well my great grandmother did have very long hair, hope she passed it on.

bikerbraid how would find hairs with the bulb and that are uncut? If you get regular trims wouldn't all the hairs be cut at the ends?  :-? *starts checking hairbrush*

If you have trims more than every 3 months or so, you probably would not find any un-trimmed hair.  Hair that you lose when you shampoo is the least likely to be broken hair and therefore would be hair lost due to it being at the end of its growing cycle.   But even with trims, if you are trying to gain length, and are trimming less than your growth, you could/should have some un-trimmed hair.

If you hair grows at 1/2" per month, you would want to make sure you are trimming less then 1/2" each month, or else you would never gain any length.  I've heard it recommended that you never trim more than 1/2 your average growth if you want length.  1/4" monthly trims would allow some length and still have nice ends.

Ok, got it. So far so good  :) I typically get whatever looks damaged trimmed off, I don't really get why I would want to leave the damaged hair if it's not part of the length being trimmed, because I always worry about the damage working up my length before I can trim it again, so I guess I do damage control.  ;D
