Title: wavies
Post by strawberryfine on Feb 18th, 2008 at 5:02am
Hi,
I am a 2a, wavy and I was wondering where the other wavies post the most.  I feel like we are different in some ways from the straighties and the curlies and would love to hear from other wavies, what your problems are, any great solutions you may use, just wavy info in general.
TIA
strawberryfine

Hi there,

I'm a wavy too!  Soz it has taken me so long to respond - have only just seen this post  ::)

I was actually looking through the Curls Room now to get some advice - like you I feel like I'm a bit of an 'in-betweener'...neither straight nor curly (I would LOVE to have gorgeous curly hair!!).  My hair is quite unusual - if I brush it (which I rarely do now) it goes wavy (like my picture) but if I leave it to dry without touching it, it forms a mixture of ringlets and straight hair...quite messy actually.

So I was hoping to get some advice on what to do - do I try and encourage my waves/curls by using socks/curlers etc?  I have tried plaiting my hair when wet and leaving to dry but it always turns out very limp, flat and frizzy  :-[  I think it's because my hair is fine!

Any advice much appreciated!

My fine hair likes to be rolled around a heavy cotton sock(s).  I get wonderful waves that last a long time.  Braids can be a bit too much wave/curl if I braid when wet, but a damp braid does nicely.

Bikerbraid--where do you position the sock curls when you sleep?  They always seem in the way when I try them.

If I have just one sock, I will have it just behind one ear - that allows me to sleep on my back or side.  I try to alternate sides so that I don't have too much tension on the hair by always pulling it to one side.  If I have two socks, then each one is behind an ear.

I find the socks/hair are soft enough that you can sleep on them without any trouble.

Hey Bikerbraid,
I want to give your sock idea a try - could you tell me a bit more...
Do I need to start with wet or damp hair?  Do I use a rolled up sock to begin with (like a hair roller/curler) and then just take a section of hair and wrap it around the rolled up sock?
Thanks  :)

I roll my hair either dry (and still get great long-lasting curls) or slightly damp.  Sometimes just a light misting of the hair while rolling dry hair is enough to make the curls last much longer.

I take me sock and fold it in half length-wise, then start wrapping the hair around the middle of the length, until I reach the scalp, then take the ends of the sock (toe and cuff) and tie them.

If you want more of a spiral curl, use a knee-high type tube sock and start the wrap at one end, and spiral the hair around the sock to the other end.  Just be sure to leave enough end to tie.  This can take some experimenting until you get the right starting point and how to place the spiral wraps, but the results are worth it.

bb-i never thought of using a sock!  :o that's a great idea. for smaller curls, i (very occasionally) use strips of a soft cotton bandana that i cut up. then i roll the hair around the strip when the hair is damp and tie it in a small bow on top of my head.
i also have wavy hair-much wavier in humidity, but it can be pretty straight if i brush it straight for a while with a boar bristle brush.

Thanks Bikerbraid.  I tried this for the first time last night and it has made my hair quite curly.  I think I'll need to continue experimenting so that I can get the curl just right!  It also made my hair super soft...I'm wondering if that is because I went to bed with slighty damp hair, rolled around the socks, therefore I didn't touch my hair as it was drying.  Usually I wash my hair in the morning and keep touching it until it is dry...hmmmm  :-?

My hair is usually very soft when I sock roll it.  My theory is that the sock protects the hair from a lot of the normal friction during the night and therefore my hair is nice and smooth and soft in the morning.  It is quite common for me to roll slightly damp hair at night which gives me wonderful, long lasting curls in the morning.  (To be truthful, when I bike to work, I don't unroll my hair until I get to work, leaving me we great curls for the day!!)

Hello Strawberryfine!  Where have you been?  I've been looking for you.  Have you been to naturallycurly.com?  There is a wavy section there.

Strawberryfine popped in here last April, but we haven't heard from her since.  You might try a PM if you need to get a hold of her.
