Title: Superstitious about hair
Post by GreyMare on May 29th, 2008 at 5:19am
Hi to everyone,

I'm new to the site and this is my first post.

I am 49 years old and have very long gray hair. I returned to college this past year and spend many hours late at nite working on my thesis. This site is a nice break from my research and I look forward to spending some time with like minded long hair people.

I would like to start a topic about superstitions. I'll go first. I have saved all of the ponytails that I have cut-off since becoming an adult. The ponytails range from 6-8" to 2.5-4 feet. (I seem to cut my hair off once it gets to my rear.) I only cut/trm my hair on the new moon and have to burn the lose hair immediately. I have a Samson like fear of losing something precious if my hair falls into another's hands and gaurd my 17 feet of amputated ponytails with love. My habits/beliefs were started by my hippie mom in the late 1960's. My ponytails range from youthful drk brown to salt and pepper.

A little strange, but I sooooo own it. Anyone else feel superstitious about their long hair?

No superstitions, really.  But there is a very direct correlation betweeen how I feel about my hair and my general mood.  So much so that my husband has said, "You need to get your hair done."  This virtually stopped when I grew my hair long.

Hello GreyMare,

Your hair sounds absolutely wonderful to me!  I think long grey hair is just beautiful and is so very rare!  I would love to see a picture of your hair.  I am about your age and have a long blonde ponytail.  I have never cut off a long tail...just trims for the past eight years.  Hold on to those tails, and let your hair grow really long!  You actually cut off a four foot ponytail?  WOW!  Love to see your picture sometime.

Welcome to our little corner of the net!

No superstitions or saved tails here.  I did sell my tail once - I was ready for short hair and wanted nothing more to do with my long hair.

What is your thesis about?

I have never had a pony tail cut off that I can remember.  There was one time I went from BSLish to chin but I don't remember her making a ponytail to do it.

Anyway, I have been careful about leaving my hair brush or nail clippings around when I had roommates in college.  Was your mom Wiccan/Pagan?  Hair and nail clippings can be ingredients in spells intended to harm the person they belong to.

How do you store your pony tails?

Nope. I'm not a superstitious person.

Hope all goes well with the thesis. I know what a drag those can be.  :P

Thanks for the replies,

Yes I have actually cut a 4 foot ponytail, chin to back of knees; I used to be 6'1", now I'm 6'. I cut all my own ponytails before going to the salon and I store them in tissue in my cedar chest.

My husband claims that I am Pagan, but that is because we have differing ideologies; his is accusatory.

I believe that I was given a special gift; my hair grows about 14-15 inches a year. So, when I decide to grow my hair to my rear it only takes 3 years to do so.

I would love to submit a photo of my hair, I'll get on that as soon as I meet a research deadline of 6/11. I'm afraid my hair has been neglected during my last semester, so it needs a little TLC before coming out.

BikerBraid: My thesis is on the Recovery Model aka Harm Reduction.  Treating the dual diagnosis of substance abuse and mental illness. Starting where the client is instead of requiring the client to jump through hoops to get treatment and/or aid.

I returned to school after a carreer in Human Resources. I have raised my kids and saved for retirement, now I'm pointed in the direction of self actualization through a personal relationship with the conditions of being human and celebrating diversity. I lived the first half of my life for me; I choose to live the second half for us.

Enough of the sappy stuff. You all have a wonderful day!

Your thesis sounds interesting.  In my prior carrer I worked with adults with mental illness and/or brain injury.  A challenging group to work with.  Good luck with your research.

Welcome to LongLocks!

As for hair superstitions... once I played around with the idea of making a hair-doll from the strands that fall out, but the ideas of all the bad hoodoo that could be done with that kind of put me off the whole thing  :-/

I remember the first trim I got after deciding to grow it out--I must have been in the 3rd grade, and I hadn't trimmed since kindergarten.  I insisted on keeping the inch that was cut off because I liked the really shiny gold it turned in the light and thought it was pretty.

For the record, it really was gold- however, it didn't stay that color.  It also wasn't very important to me after I got it off my head and I threw it away about 2 weeks later. ;D
