Title: Curlers?  Rollers?
Post by Tara on Jun 24th, 2008 at 11:46am
To start, I will tell you that my hair is pin straight with absolutely no natural wave at all.

As far as I can remember my hair has never held a curl, it will hold a slight wave from an overnight braid, especially if my hair was wet, but I remember trying to curl it for dances years back in high school and they would fall after an hour or two.

Well, lately I have been wanting to play with a little bit of curl in my hair, just for fancier updo's when I go out, and I have been contemplating getting some curlers.

I absolutely NEVER use any kind of heat appliance on my hair, no curling irons, no straight irons, and NO blow dryers, and I have never used curlers before either.

Does anyone know of a safe curler that works well but does not damage the hair?
If such a thing doesn't exist I will just forget about it since I am only playing with new hairstyles anyway, it's not a huge deal.

SO if you use rollers or curlers to curl your  hair, any suggestions would be great!  Thanks!

I've heard that the pink spongy curles are pretty good for being hair-safe.
I know somewhere here one of us mentioned them not too long ago.

The pink sponge rollers can work.  I also find that sock or rag curlers  work well when used on damp hair or hair that has some aloe vera gel as a "setting lotion".

yeah I was thinking some kind of sponge might be ok, I might have to get some.

How do you put the socks in your hair?  I mean is the sock bundled up and you wrap your hair around?

I like to use a heavy cotton crew or tube sock.  I just start wrapping the hair around the middle of the sock, roll it up towards the scalp, then tie the ends of the sock to hold the hair in place.  Very easy to do and even reasonable to sleep on.

hmmm, I think I might try that before I buy curlers! Thanks!

I've used rag curlers before, and they worked really well. Like when I woke up and took them out my hair was amazingly curly and kinda unmanageable at first! I did grow to like them, but I didn't like the long process of putting in the rags.

Usually when I want my hair to get texture I just put it in two braids when it's wet. It gives it a very pretty wave, and if you did more than 2 you'd probably get tighter waves that are more on the curly side. This would be more casual though, and probably look better if you left it down.
