Title: Castile Soap
Post by waiting4longlocks on Jun 26th, 2008 at 8:14pm
Just wondering if anyone uses Castile soap instead of shampoo? I have completely cut out sulfates/laureth sulfates and now I ACV rinse and occasionally use an organic shampoo. I still need a way to clean my scalp after long oilings... has anyone ever used Castile soap on their hair?  :o

I myself have not used it, but I've heard that true Castille soap is one of the mildest and most gentle one can use.

If you do use it, I would recommend a vinegar rinse to bring back softness.  I like shampoo bars but I must use a vinegar rinse afterwards (I rinse the vinegar out too).   :)

I tried Dr. Bronners Castile Soap (liquid) for a few weeks. It was a disaster. It left my hair very gunky and greasy and awful. In fact, I ended up just getting a pixie cut afterward! When I went to get the cut, the stylist asked "What the heck is in your hair?" She was really grossed out, poor thing...I felt bad.

However, I didn't do vinegar rinses after each castile shampoo, which apparently makes a big difference. Also, I probably should have diluted it, too, I think.

I have been using castille soap for about the last year or so. I originally had the same gunky, couldn't drag a rake through my hair reaction, but discovered vinegar rinsing, and that solved that problem. I usually add in essential oils though, and sometimes jojoba oil (a tablespoon or so) and mix as well as possible. I've used the soap by itself, but my hair gets really dry and I get very dandruffy when I do that. Overall, I've been happy with it.
