Title: Question: Am I going about this right
Post by EdenRayn on Aug 3rd, 2008 at 6:23pm
I used to have really long hair however for the past few years I cut it short.  Right now it at about chin length maybe a little past and I am going to grow it out to about my waist I think.  I am trying to get this length by October of 2009 last time I grew it out from this length it took only a year (my hair was 100% natural at the time).  I don't know if this is still possible however my hair still grows pretty fast.

About the hairs present condition:  My hair is extremely damaged to put it lightly I used to dye it black and it took three bleach sessions to get that color out and a permeant dye job to get my natural color back in.  Note I am not going to dye it again to its waist length (I like it at medium brown and my natural is light and I wont use permeant i think).  I am using Dumb Blonde shampoo and conditioner as well as tresemme anti frizz.  I was wondering is their anything else I can do for my hair.

On a good note I have not used heat on my hair in over 6 years though I kinda blue that good point with the dying.

Thanks and any help or info into what I can do to help the damage grow out will be great!

Hi EdenRayn, welcome to LL!
I am a rookie at this, but you might try a good deep conditioner, and some oil.

Hi and welcome!

Regular deep conditioning and nightly oiling will help, but only cutting will eliminate the damage that is already there.

I hope i am going about this right, I just had my hair trimmed to take off all the damaged length. So now I have about a bit longer than chin length hair.
I am trying to figure out what to do to start getting it really nice and healthy.
At the moment I use Garnier Nutriese hair products, and I haven't looked at the ingredients in them yet. I spent most of yesterday reading the boards here.
I have thin and curly hair. I have been coloring it a red, so looking into a henna rinse.
The questions I have are:
1. What is best way to shampoo without having to use bought products?
2. Where do I find Henna formulas for hair color?
3. Other than a diet good in fruits and veggies, with a bit of meat, what is the best diet to be on?
4. Is there any recommendations for Diabetics when growing out your hair?
I am planning on letting it grow to about hip length or longer. The past few years I have had issues with hair due to undiagnosed Diabetes, but I have that under control now.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Welcome to LongLocks, rosegardenfibers.

You're off to a good start getting the damage off.  Its best not to color at all.  Henna is probably your best choice if you plan to continue to color.  I don't have any suggestions there, since I don't color my hair.

To answer your questions:
1. I have no idea.  I use Devacurl products for curly hair and I buy them at Ulta stores.
2. Sorry, no help there.
3. Add a multivitamin and that should be good.
4. I don't know, you'll probably need to ask your doc.

Since your hair is curly you'll want to do a weekly or bi-weekly deep conditioner as curly hair tends to be dry and your coloring dries it, too.

Thank you so very much. I am still learning it all again.
My Daughter is 11 and her hair is bsl at moment. we will both be learning alot I think on here.
She has straight hair, mine is just thin and curly. We just had an Alta shop open last year here so I guess I shall make a trip there this week.
Thanks again.

Hi Edenrayn! :)

i think that you and I are in the same boat In terms of our hair growth goals. I started growing my chin length hair out in June, and my long term goal is to get it to my waist.  If you want to lessen the damage on your hair, I would suggest deep conditioning, and  oiling. But ultimately, to have really healthy hair you would need to cut the damaged parts away.
Don't worry, In no time you will have long, beautiful hair ! ;D
