Title: oiling your hair
Post by Jilayne75 on Aug 16th, 2008 at 1:33pm
Hi everyone! :D

I have never oiled my hair before. I would like to start, but I'm not really sure what I am supposed to use on it and how I am supposed to go about doing it. I have read some of the other posts on oil treatments, but I still have some questions. Is there a difference between normal oil treatments and hot oil treatments? What kind of oil am I supposed to use? How often am i supposed to do this, and how long do i leave the oil in for?

Any helpful comments would be very much appreciated! ;D

Hi!  Depending on what texture your hair is,is the amount of oil that you'll use.  If it is very dry,you might want to oil in the am and the pm.  Take no more than 4 drops in the palm of your hand and rub your hands together.  Run your hands down the length of your hair, especially on the ends.  Viola!  You've oiled your hair!
You can experiment with the oils to see what your hair likes.  Try Jojoba oil,Sweet Almond oil,Olive oil(if you've got dry hair)Your hair will let you know what it likes and doesn't.
The hot oil treatments can be done weekly. Read the directions on the box for guidelines.  There are many out there.  I've used VO5 hot oil treatment and it's ok.  I personally love Ojon Restorative Treatment.  It's expensive, but well worth it.  My hair drinks it up faster than I can put it on!  lol
See what you like and ask any questions!  Hope that helps!

If you're just oiling the ends of your hair because they look dry you leave it in just like any other kind of leave in. If you doing an intensive treatment you can leave it on, 30 mins, an hour, or even overnight it's up to you.

When I put gel in my wet hair, I add 4 drops of camellia oil.  Then, the on the second day I finger comb my curls, divide my hair in half and apply 2 drops per half to the ends and then the mid shaft from the ears down.  This stays in all day, and sometimes I'll oil the ends on the next day, too.  I wash my hair 2x a week.
Once every two weeks I go to my local salon and get a scalp massage w/sunflower oil.  I leave that on at least for an hour, or sometimes overnight.

Okay, I promise this is my last question about oiling. Do you put the oil on when your hair is wet or dry? Does it matter?

Thanks! :D

Hair absorbs oil better if it's applied while hair is wet.

And Sakina and Angel Spun have just proven that it really comes down to which way you think you're hair likes it better. So I say try both and see what works for you.

I've just decided to add my question on to this post instead of starting a new one.

I've recently bought some hot oil treatment, and it says to only leave the oil on for "UP TO ONE MINUTE" i've tried that and i feel that it doesnt really do anything for my hair. How long do you ladies leave the oil treatments on for? Do you think it would matter if i disregard the directions and just leave it on for longer?

I leave hot oil treatments in for at least an hour. Sometimes overnight.  ::)

I've used those before. They didn't seem to do anything.  :P Perhaps it was because I only left them in for the minute.  :-?

I usually leave a hot oil treatment in for 15 - 20 minutes.  I takes me more than a minute to just get it applied to all of my hair!  ;D

I have found that organic hair shining oils such as  jojoba,  grapeseed, coconut, broccoli seed oil, and even olive oil are great for oiling your hair and bringing it back to its natural state.

http://www.yves-rocher.dk/control/product/~category_id=4550/~categoryFilterType=ByBrand/~categoryFilterBy=Mono_de_tahiti/~product_id=86628/~hbxSrc=

I bought it to use as a moisturizer but 3.38oz./100ml doesn't go a long way but in the description it says it can also be used for your hair.  So after my shower, I towel dried my hair, turned the bottle upside-down in my palm, then poured it all back into the bottle and only rubbed the remainder in my hand between my palms then worked it into my hair, mainly the ends but I didn't expect much and actually feared it would dry to something crunchy or greasy.

No such thing happened.  It's just unbelievably shiny and soft.  The oil is much better for my hair than my skin.  Disclaimer:  I have impossible to please skin.

This could be a very economic way to oil my hair and I love the coconut fragrance.

I've used the Tahiti Monoi oil before, it does smell really good.  I use it on my skin in the summer.  I'm glad you like the result.

Sorry about your impossible to please skin.

I ended up using the oil on my skin while my skin is still damp right out of the shower.  I have a bit left.  It's gone a much longer way than I thought it would.  Will definitely buy it again if Yves Rocher still stocks it when I come by a bit of money.

My mom gave me a tiny bottle of apricot oil for cuticles and face it says.  I wouldn't dare use it on my face.  Used it before pushing my cuticles down today and that was fine.  Has anyone tried apricot or other fruit oils on their hair?

In my experience, it is all about experimenting. What works for some may not work for you. It is good to have a start point. For example, you may want to research different oils and see what types of hair they work with best. So if your hair is dry then look up oils for dry hair. I hope this helps. :)

You can make your own oil treatments too..i just used olive oil and saran wrap with a shower cap over it. i left it on over night. if you can stand to have plastic on your head all night, it works wonders!

Oiling hair proper treatment which would mean a massage with oils,Having good hair oil is not enough, eating the right kind of food, massaging and oiling of your hair stimulates the blood circulation, which in return helps your hair, due to the oil your hair is protected from the strong and hot sun rays, the oil also gives your hair that extra shine.
