Title: Stylist: "Oil is bad for your hair"
Post by yaku on Aug 23rd, 2008 at 2:14am
My stylist says water is good for my hair, and oil is not. Her reasoning is that oil and water are opposites, and since water is moisturizing, oil is not. She fooled me once, but come on!
Now i've read enough of your hair journals and seen enough advice to know this is not true, but she very strongly believes this. She is the one that got me the Deva Curl product OneCondition and LoPoo, but refuses to let me try any oil at all! Deva Curl is the main reason I cut my hair all off (growing it back again...), as my hair looked and felt better before it, with some jojoba oil and aloe vera every once in awhile, and a little bit of Burts Bees conditioner. (not all together)
ANyway, is this true? Or is it true for straight haired people and not for curlies?? (I'm curly)

thanks, Discuss!

I'd probly agree with you, yaku.  :)I mean, your hair makes natural oils that are very good for it, right? and washing your hair too much can lead it to be very dry? I am aware that this is partly because of the shampoo though. What condition is your stylists hair in?

I think your stylist is mistaken.

Dry=no oil
Dehydrated=no water

We need both!  Curly hair tends to be Dry, so we must have oil!!

I also think she is wrong. I have curly hair and use oil, and have no problem. One thing I remember reding about curly hair is that is is harder for the natural oils from the sclp to travel down to the tips of your hair. I only use oil on my ends to mid way to my scalp. This lets my ends enjoy the same benefits the rest of my hair gets from oil.

Egad, I would switch stylists if I were you, Yaku...or better yet, forego stylists altogether. This one obviously has no idea what she's talking about.  :o

My hair has been so much better since I've started using oils.  I've even begun to use them as a leave-in since I hate using gel on my hair.  So now I oil my palms and run them over my hair when it's wet.  It really helps with dry bits and flyaways.

You know, I to find that if I use oil instead of, or maybe a little gel with, my curls are much more defined, smooth and glossy!

She "refuses to let you try oil at all." ??????  :-?

That comment struck me as unusual.    :P

Yeah, that sentence made me go, "Excuse me?!"
I would simply stop telling the stylist everything that you're doing to your hair (in terms of products), or find another stylist.

Moisture is what keeps the hair pliable.  The "oil and water don't mix" statement is a bit of a misnomer here.  The oil will help keep the water in the hair shaft.  The trick is the size of the oil molecule.  This is why some hair likes olive oil and other hair doesn't.  If your hair is more course, the larger oil molecule of olive oil will be able to penetrate the cuticle and do the most good.  Jojoba oil is a much smaller molecule and therefore works well on fine hair.  Your body creates sebum - a type of oil that is specifically produced to keep your hair soft and manageable.  (FYI, jojoba oil is most like sebum).

Alot of good replies! :)
When I said "she refuses to let me use oil", I guess that just came out. Not like she is in control of me or anything, she's just my stylist.
She's just the only person in the area that doesnt cut curly hair when it's wet and knows stuff about curly hair (except for the whole oil vs water thing.)

Maybe i can keep having her cut my hair but I will be the one to decide products in it.

well, i went with my mom when she got her hair cut, and her she told her stylist about my new hair care routine, but the only thing she really knew about is that i had been oiling it.  and her stylist said that hair care product brands don't like people using oils because they are too simple and can't be marketed and sold that well.  it's something that people use on their hair that is out of the control of hair companies.  so maybe that's why she said it.

Yaku,

I read on the internet that olive oil is bad for the hair. This was not from a study so I do not know if it is true. If I were you I would research this and find out. Maybe she is right on some level, maybe not.

I do agree with the others that oils are wonderful for the hair. I use oils and my hair loves it. It could be because I am naturally curly and have dry hair.

In my expereince, if a stylist refuses you to do what you want to your own hair then it's probably time to re-evaluate if she is right for you. My stylist has never told me I cannot do something. I will ask her about things and she gives me her opinion and then I make a decision.

I hope everything works out. Best of luck.
