Title: Frustrating (a lot of questions)
Post by Liebe_Und_Krieg on Sep 12th, 2008 at 12:10am
I have been growing my hair out for the past 3 years.  The hair on the back of my head is a little past my shoulders and my bangs are around my nose. I want to get my hair so that it is all the same length and is down to my scapulas. Now when I get a trim every two months the tips of my hair are dry. I thought I had a good routine going but I guess it just isn’t enough so now I need your help.
-      I have 2 showers a day. (morning and evening) I only use conditioner in the morning and at night I just rinse it with water.
-      I wear a hat almost every time I go out.
-      I don’t put any products in my hair (example hair gel and so on)
-      I let my hair air dry.
-      Every once a month I leave a conditioner in my hair and go to bed(stays in for about 6-8 hours) then I wash it out with shampoo (this is the only time I use shampoo and right after that I put conditioner back in my hair and wash that out again)
-      I eat eggs almost every day (heard that is good for the hair)
-      I drink water all the time
Hmmm…. Can’t think of anything else right now. I will post more when they come to me.
Should I invest in a wide tooth wooden comb?
Any recommendations on a deep conditioner that I can leave in my hair over night?
Are biotin pills worth it?
What do you think I could do that would keep my hair from drying out at the end of every two months? Thanks

Congratulations on deciding to grow your hair long!

Since you get your hair wet twice a day, I think you could benefit from a leave in conditioner.  You would apply this after rinsing out your regular conditioner.

Also, you might want to try doing your deep conditioning treatments 2 times a month.  I don't think you need to leave it in overnight though.  Are you applying this treatment to dry hair?  It is best to wash your hair and then apply the deep treatment.  I leave mine on for an hour or 30 minutes if I'm using a bonnet hairdryer (on low setting) to warm the hair which increases the penetration of the conditioner.  Then rinse out and apply leave in.

It is good to get regular trims.  You could add oiling the ends to your daily routine.  I wash my hair twice a week.  On the days I'm not washing, I divide my hair in two, then take 2 drops of camellia oil and smooth it onto my length (from the ears down) on each side.  I do not have your hair texture, so I'm just sharing what works for me.

Good Luck!!!

I'd also recommend trying either a leave in conditioner on the ends or oiling the ends.  If you don't have any splits and you only have the dry ends, then regular oil or leave in moisture should help a lot.

A wide toothed comb is the only thing I use to comb my hair.  No brushes, just my fingers or my wide toothed combs.  You don't mention if you have split ends.

It might be a good idea to clarify after leaving the conditioner in for that long... build-up can also cause hair to break.

Hello Leibe_Und_Krieg,

Since you posted in this forum, I'm guessing that you have fine hair.
It's common for the ends of fine hair to dry out after 2 months (as I've noticed, being that I have fine hair myself). I usually don't go longer than 3 months between trims.

You should also be deep conditioning at least once a week. If once a month works for you, great, but I personally don't think it's enough.

Also, wearing the same hat every day can cause breakage since it sits on exactly the same place on your hair all the time. Fine hair is the most susceptible to breakage and does not appreciate things being placed on or in it all the time.

If you don't have a seamless comb already, it would definitely be a good investment. A few of the ladies here could recommend good wooden combs, but you may also use bone, cellulose or seamless acrylic.

As for biotin, some people find success with it and some don't. My best advice is to try it out and see what happens. I've heard that it can take 6 months for it to work.

If your hair likes oil, it's easy to do heavy oil treatments overnight and wash them out in the morning. Just be sure to wear a sleep cap when you do this.

Best of luck.  :)

Sorry I haven’t been able to post sooner (swamped at work)

Yeah I forgot to say yes I have really fine hair (everyone says I have baby hair). My hair only gets dry it doesn’t have any split ends.  If I didn’t have to take two showers a day I wouldn’t but my hair looks really greasy in the morning and I take one at night because my job is very dirty.

I will take all of your suggestions into consideration in my endeavour to get long healthy hair.

Thank you all for the help
P.S. I will keep you all posted on how well its going
