Title: New here! Have some questions
Post by LongBlackLocks on Sep 14th, 2008 at 6:29pm
Hello everyone!  :)

My name is Alaina, I have been reading the messages on this site for alittle while now, so I thought I should join! This site is awsome, and I have found some great tips!

Ive started taking a hair vitamin, and extra biotin, contioning only my length for most washes, and using a smooth wide-toothed comb only. I never use heat on my hair and never brush it! Also, I have started using a leave-in conditioner.

Once every 6-7 months I color my hair my natural color (black) to cover some glimmering greys that I have on the sides ( maybe 10 on each side) but because my hair is black it is noticable when up. Also, I have found that coloring it every so often boosts my colors luster and richness.

My question is, since I last dyed my hair ( roughly a month ago ) Im not sure if my hair has grown 1/2" its hard to tell by roots since I dye it my natural color. Im terribly afraid my hair has stopped growing! I tried to measure it, and if Im doing it correctly it's 27". Is it possible that it wont grow more?? Help!  :-/

Hi Alaina! Welcome to Longlocks! (Your hair looks very pretty in the avatar :)

I'm sure the other people here will comment also, but since I don't know too much about this, but I will tell you what I do know. Most peoples hair grows in stages, and usually takes a break once in a while for a couple of months and either grows very little or not at all.  (the other ladies here can correct me if I'm wrong about that). You're probably not at terminal length by looking at your avatar because that would probably be too short for a terminal length on most people. Also, hair usually slows down a bit when it is too damaged to grow (I'm not saying your hair is damaged, just telling all the reasons why a persons hair growth could slow or stop).
If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it. Your hair is probably just taking a rest for a little bit and will start back up again soon, most likely within a couple of months. Good luck! ;D

Jilayne- Thank you for your reply! My hair is wet in that pic, I may take another one when it drys, but thank you very much! I dont think my hair is damaged, I take very good care of it, and have no split ends  :) I'm hoping it does continue to grow, or like you said maybe its a cycle of slow growth.

I also do deep conditioning treatments often and just switched to Pantene Pro V for long hair!

My hair was stuck at about 25" dry ( 31 wet) for a few months.  I wouldn't worry about it, especially if your hair is not damaged.  It seems to happen to people starting when their hair is around 27 or 28 inches, and some people get worried (I was).  But it is very unlikely that it is your terminal length.  Just keep being nice to it and it will probably start growing again eventually.

Callisto- That makes me feel better!!  :)   How do you properly measure your hair?

Hello Alaina,

Your hair is fabulous!  :D  Really, you have the sort of hair I have always dreamed of!

To properly measure your hair, find a fabric tape measure and place the end of it on your forehead where your hairline starts. Bring the tape measure up over your head and down your length. Where your hair ends is your measurement.

Also, I have heard that hair can go through resting phases where it doesn't grow at all. Mine doesn't do this, but I've heard a lot of other people talk about it. Perhaps this is what your hair is doing. If so, then just have patience - it will grow again.

Anyway, nice to have another Pantene addict on the boards.  ;)

Angel Spun- Thank you soooo much!! I appriciate the compliment!  :-*
I just switched to Pantene Beautiful Lengths shampoo and conditioner, and the Classic Clean shampoo for when I need to remove hair product build-up. I love the smell and my hair needs the cones LOL! What Pantene do you use?

Hey Alaina! :)
though your question was for Angel Spun, just wanted to pop in and say that i use the exact same shampoo and conditioner as you do. I'm currently trying to grow my hair out from its measly 14.5 ish/15'', so thats why I chose It. I also use Pantene pro v nourishing deep conditioner. Works pretty good. What kind of deep conditioner are you using?

Jilayne- That's quite alright! I use Ion effective care treatment from Sally's (I love Sally's) Its $1.99 per packet and soooooo good! My hair feels awsome after. I shampoo in the shower, rinse then put the whole packet in my hair (more so on the length) then put a shower cap on and heat with a blow dryer for a few mins. Leave it on for 15-20 mins, rinse. I condition only my hair twice a week, and also use HASK henna and placenta once a month.  ;)

Right now, I'm using the Restoratives Time Renewal line even though it's not my fave. My hair loves cones as well.  :)

Hi Alaine,  I don't really know what to add but your hair is really beautiful!  My hair loves cones too but it's not any where near as long as yours so I'm not sure if my recommendations are good for anything.

I usually use Pantene or Schwarzkopf Gliss products.  Gliss has a line for longer hair.  I'm using the Repair Shampoo simply because it's better for porous hair like mine and the Color Treatment conditioner because it has UV filter which I like even though my hair isn't dyed right now.  I would like to dye my hair a "true" black shade but my hair usually becomes weakened when dyed.  I'll suffer more split ends.  My hair likes the 1 minute Gliss deep conditioners as well.  In the winter I can use them daily if it's cold and dry enough in the air.

Have you been able to grow your hair longer than this in the past?  Then it's probably just a resting period.  If you haven't tried this before, there's no saying whether it's a resting period, general slowing down in growth or if you perhaps you have to accept that this may be your terminal length.  I'm not trying to discourage you.   :)

Drear- Thank you very much! I had very long hair when I was a young teenager, but then after that I kept cutting it, not short but BSL. I dont remember how long I had grown it before that. I havent cut my hair at all in 15 months. When I had cut it last, I had it just above BSL.
