Title: questions I'm curious about
Post by Jilayne75 on Nov 1st, 2008 at 8:12pm
So here are two random questions I have always been curious about but never have gotten around to asking!.(Oh, and keep in mind that the questions aren't really like in-desperate-need-for-an-answer questions, so it's not a big deal if you can't answer them. I was just wondering.):P  :)

1. Why do people's hair change colours when its wet? (mine does anyways) My hair is blonde, so when it is wet it turns brown. Even my eyebrows go darker! I know some people whos hair just stays the same, but their hair is already brown. Who's hair here changes colours when its wet?

2. My eyebrows are actually light brownish, even though my hair is blonde. I know alot of people who are like this naturally also, like me. Does this mean that when I get older (I'm 13) my hair will be the same colour as my eyebrows? Does this always happen naturally to everyone with different colour eyebrows? I have a friend who has red hair, but her eyebrows are so blonde that they are barely visible. But my hair also does get streaked  lighter from the sun a little too.

Thank you!

Good questions!

Wet hair looks darker because wet hair repels light and weighs down your hair.. once the water evaporates the colou of your hair gets lighter because it reflects light. When its wet light takes a longer time to penetrate through your hair, thus leading in a darker color.. until it drys.

As for eyebrow color..... hmmmm, I don't have a scientific answer.  However, I can tell you that as a child, my eyebrows were darker than my hair color until I was in my late teens.  Then my they matched.  Now my eyebrows are lighter than my hair - and, if I am remembering correctly, I think my eyebrows are lighter than they were when I was younger.  I was a white blonde as a small child and as with many blondes, my hair has darkened with age.  It is now a dark blonde or light brown (with a healthy amount of gray).  I'll keep looking around for more info on eyebrow color and let you know if I find anything more.

Things that absorb water usually get darker when wet. Clothes, sponges, rocks, hair...pretty much anything porous. Moisture saturates and brings out colour (look at the world around you the next time it rains).
My hair is light brown when dry and very dark brown when wet.

As for eyebrows, it's all in the genes. It's not uncommon for natural blondes to have slightly darker eyebrows. Especially those with ash blonde properties (which you have). It does not mean that your hair will turn dark as you get older. No worries.

I don't know why eyebrows are a different color from hair..... It would seem that they should be the same.  I have dark brown hair and my eyebrows are almost black.  It looked kinda strange when my hair faded from medium brown to blonde and I had these dark eyebrows.

Then, of course, you have the people who bleach their hair blonde and leave their eyebrows be.  I don't know why they don't realize how odd that looks.

Okay! I have another question!

Here it goes: Howcome after people dye their hair, crimp it, curl it, or straighten it, it feels so healthy and soft, and looks super shiny? Even when all of us here know that it's not healthy at all?  :-? What does it do that makes it look and feel healthy, but actually is bad?  :-?

 hehe. Just curious.  :)

Some people have a more resilient hair type than others. Fine hair, for example, is much softer than coarse hair and will survive harsh processing (such as highlighting, perming, relaxing, etc.) better.

People who seem to have healthy hair in spite of much styling/processing probably don't process it that often (perhaps you're seeing them after their very first chemical process). Or it could be that they're using a ton of shine sprays, serums, leave-in's etc. so their hair only seems shiny & soft when it's actually quite unhealthy.
I can promise you that subjecting any kind of hair to styling and processing over time will cause serious damage.
