Title: I will never get it !!!
Post by denisem on Dec 11th, 2008 at 1:25pm
Is it just me or what?  I still cannot do a french braid on myself. I am going on 2 months now of practicing every night and I just can't get it. I'm about to give up. I can do reg braids, herringbone, ropes & buns on my own hair but that's it. Any tips will be most welcomed !!!

I know that frustration well I think I tried for two years. And then I tried one day and it worked. I can do both french and dutch on my own hair, along with, rope, herringbone, english, and french twist. My only tip would be to walk away from it for awhile. Don't try for two weeks or even two months. Then look over your instructions again and try then. You'll get the hang of it.  8-) I'm not even remotely ambidextrous and I somehow got it to work.  ;D

You just need to keep practicing- it's incredibly disorienting working on your own head.  I'd been able to french braid on dolls and my friends for years before I could get it right on myself.

There are tricks that make it easier- I find that sometimes during the process (picking up a new section) I need to look in a mirror to make it neat, but other times (crossing the sections) looking in a mirror is just disorienting.  You WILL get it, though.

Also, to make it easier on yourself, make sure your hair is tangle-free before you start.  Once, I tried to do an upside-down (starts at top of the neck and works up to a bun at the crown) french braid on incredibly tangled hair- it was so frustrating I just gave up.
But keep at it!  You will get it!

Thanks. Maybe I will take a break from it for a while...and go back and try, try again. I have so many different articles with pics & instructions, but I have yet to find the easiest set of instructions for a french braid. Maybe someday !!

Can you french braid on someone else?  Sometimes it helps to at least be able to do it when you can see what you are doing.

I find using a mirror too confusing when doing a french braid.  I try to do it only by touch and in my mind "see" what I am doing.

There are some braiding aids out there that you can buy (or at least there used to be!).  They help keep the sections separated so that your fingers don't have to do all the work.  That can be helpful until your hands/fingers learn the process.

ME TOO!  I have been trying literally my entire life and I STILL can not do a french braid on myself to save my life.  I gave up trying hehe, I am going to teach the hubby to do it instead :P
