Title: Trisha 2009

Hair
Length is 23".  I've been using the Fiorentino soap and the results are good.  Unless I begin to see negative effects, I'll continue to use it.

Well, I'm another year older (yesterday was my 47th birthday).  You know that line from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when Willie Wonka says to young Charlie, "...and you--why, you're just lucky to be here, aren't you?"  That's how I feel.   8-)

With the money my inlaws gave me for Christmas and my birthday, I purchased my first digital camera.  Yay!   :D  Now, among other things, I'll be able to share my hair with you in a more timely fashion.  It's a Kodak, which is ironic because the very first camera my parents bought me way back when was a Kodak 110.   :)

In my last entry of 2008 I talked about my weight, quote:
"I have gained about 10 pounds since the first of this year."
Well, actually, that statement is incorrect.  I dug out my wellness report from the beginning of 2008 and found my weight to be 166.  By the end of the year, I was back down to 166.  So while I certainly did not sustain a weight loss for 2008, neither did I gain.  *shrug*  I'm ok.

Monday I'll return to work...*sigh*  These two weeks seemed like such a long time when I first started and now they're over.  I wish I didn't have to go back, however I did not find a magic lamp containing a genie while I've been on holiday.  So back I go.

My first camera was a 110 as well, I loved that thing!  :)

Happy belated birthday, Trish. :-*

Don't feel bad about breaking even on the weight front. You've a whole new year to make progress.

Congrats on making 23" - you're just an inch away from 2 feet, girlfriend! :D
And congrats on the new digicam too. You're officially more "with it" than I am. ;D

My new avatar photo was taken on my birthday (January 1) with my new digital camera.  Good grief, how did I survive so long without it?!   ;D  Anyway, as Sakina pointed out, I do seem to be regaining length very fast, even with just the usual 1/2" growth every month.  I always forget how much red I have in my hair until I see it in the right light.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, gang.  Much appreciated!   :-*

Today I returned to work.   :(
It really hasn't been too awful; I had about 8 requests for data waiting for me in my email inbox and 7 of those are already completed.  Tomorrow I must begin scoring course evaluations.   :'(  --Can't put those off.  I have...4 groups of them, so far, to "grade" and expect more to trickle in this week.

Have a slight headache but I believe it's from caffeine slack-off.  I indulged in a bit more caffeine than usual while on holiday.

So...walking, yes, must start doing that...now...ok, not now--this afternoon.  What's that old saying?  --Each journey begins with a first step, or something.  Baby steps or heavy hobnail steps...just begin.

Thanks, ladies!  It's really weird, but I almost do not recognize myself in the avatar!  There's always an instant where I think, "Now WHO is that?!  --Oh yeah, it's ME!"   ;D
It's a no-wash day; side part held back with a barrette.  I have some nice night-braid waves going on.

I've just applied to be a freelance writer for our local newspaper.   :o  There was an ad for this position three weeks ago.  I went back and forth with myself about applying, finally convincing myself that I would regret not going for it.  Then the ad reappeared in this past Sunday's edition and I took that as a sign that I had to do it.  *shrug*  So I have!  I mean, the worst that can happen is they'll reject me.  Big whoop!  I've had far worse things happen.   8-)  Of course I'll let you know the outcome.

I started on the small mountain of instructor evaluations for the Fall term.  I've finished one box and have remaining another box and 2 medium size bundles.  More will come, though, either this week or next.  Argh...

How exciting!!!  I can't believe that you didn't apply the first time that you saw the ad, but at least you did it.  There is definitely no harm in trying.  I so hope you get it, good luck! :D

No-wash day; hair is up.  Still using the Italian handsoap and still enjoying the results.

I've finished scoring the boxes of departmental evaluations that have arrived so far, and am awaiting others.  I estimate that another 8-9 departments should be delivering their evals soon.

Have not heard one peep from the newspaper in regards to the freelance job, but I'm not stressing.  Heck, it could be a month or more before I hear back.   :-?

IF (and that's a big "if") stepson is still within his weight limit, he should be shipping off to basic training next Monday, the 12th.  *fingers crossed*  We haven't seen much of him for a month or more, since he's been staying with his mother.  Honestly, it's been kind of nice not having him around; the stress level in the house has dropped considerably.

Yesterday after work, I dusted off my treadmill (literally--yuck) and walked a mile.   :)  Time to stop talking about exercise and do it.

Hair
Wash day, hair will be down all day.  I used up the last of my Pantene Restoratives Breakage Defense conditioner this morning.  Will not buy more, at least not for quite a while, as I now need to use up the big honkin' bottle of Patene Classic Clean condish hubby bought me last month.  I can't use Classic Clean shampoo because of the wax, but the conditioner is fine.  I'm curious as to how long I'll be able to go without buying any shampoo or conditioner in 2009!  I'm equally curious to find out exactly how long a bar of the Italian soap will last; then I'll know how long the entire box will keep me in suds.

Other
Daughter is having a rough time of it lately--man trouble.  I can't give details because I don't want to violate her privacy.  There are many, many extenuating circumstances but the bottom line is that her boyfriend broke it off with her in a letter she received yesterday.  Ironically, this may be a good thing.  I told her he may be trying to do right by her and she knows it's true.  Poor girl will probably be weepy all day.  The funny thing that I reminded her of this morning is that she's talked about breaking up with him many times during the last couple of years!   ::)  Ah, youth.  Still, I'm making light of the situation...I know it hurts.  I remember what it's like...The best thing I can do for her is to love and support her, no matter what.

Walked a mile on my treadmill again yesterday when I got home from work.  The 20 minutes or so it took me to do a mile just seemed to fly by!  Of course I was watching Ellen, which helped pass the time.   :D  She's all right in my book.

Haven't seen or heard anything from the stepson since new year's day.  Monday, the 12th, he's supposed to head up to St. Louis to be officially sworn in, then head out on Tuesday, the 13th, to Fort Jackson in South Carolina.  We'll see...I really, really hope he doesn't screw this up.

Hair
Wash day; hair will remain down for the day.  Bought some foam rollers, size large, and a satin sleep cap on Saturday.  Thought I'd play around with trying to create some loose curls at the bottom of my hair.  First going to try aloe gel as a setting agent, but am not placing bets on how effective it will be.

Other
Hubby will drive his son to the recruiting office this morning where he (stepson) will depart around 10am for St. Louis.  I'm not celebrating, though, until I'm sure they're really going to keep him at Fort Jackson, South Carolina (tomorrow).   ;)

Walked on my treadmill Saturday for 3/4 of a mile.  We had been to Wal Mart earlier and I figure that counted for at least 1/4 of a mile!!   :P  Did not walk yesterday; Sunday will be my day off from exercise.

Daughter is doing very well after her break up.  She told me that she and her former beau had a telephone conversation during which I'm sure she...what shall I say?  --Well, knowing my daughter, she probably let him know she was hurt, but in the long run they'll remain friends of a sort.  She's a survivor, just like her ma.   8-)

Wash day, hair will be loose all day.  I'm taking Friday off as vacation, so I'll probably try my foam rollers then.  As in, will wash my hair Friday evening, set my hair, and wait for the Saturday morning results.

Other
Been busy scoring instructor evaluations this week.   :P  I have several more packets to do, but I HAD to take a break or lose what little mind I have left.   ;)

Walked for 30 minutes on my treadmill yesterday after work.   :)  I'm staying away from the scale on purpose, but I know for certain that I sure feel good.

Stepson is gone!  He telephoned last night to let us know he and his group had arrived safely in Georgia and they would be boarding a bus later for South Carolina.  So technically today will be his first REAL day in the Army.  --What I wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall.   ;D

Hair
No wash day; hair is parted down the middle with sides held back with combs.  Length is down.  I don't know if I can wait until tomorrow night to wash and set my hair (with the sponge rollers)!  --May just do it tonight.  I didn't want to watch Grissom's last episode of CSI with curlers in my hair, but I doubt he would mind.   ;D

Other
Good grief Granny, it's COLD...  Temperature this morning with wind chill factor was around 6.  --That's a shoe size, not a temperature!!!   :o  I'm SO ready for Spring already.

Oh, I found a wonderful forum the other day while doing a search for "Veronica Lake hair".  The search led me to a site called the Fedora Lounge, a place for all things of the Golden Era--the 1920's, 30's and 40's.  Their discussions may extend beyond those years, I don't know.  But my primary interest is the 1940's and there are plenty of topics to keep my peepers busy!!!  In fact I need to ask Drear if she knows about this place.  At least I *think* she's the one who does, um...what is it called?  --Who is into vintage dressing and whatnot.  I'll go check...

I'm taking tomorrow off as a vacation day and the university is closed on Monday for MLKJ day.  So that gives me a 4-day weekend.  WOO hoo!!!   8-)  I may even sleep late tomorrow morning--at least until 5:30 or 6:00!!   ;D

Mon...oops, Tuesday 20 January 2009
Hair
The curlers experiment done on Thursday night turned out tres faboo.  I washed my hair and rolled it on sponge curlers, no conditioner or styling gel.  Tucked my hair into a satin cap and slept on it.  I'll tell you what, unless it's something that one gets used to over time, I don't know HOW those women in the "golden era" slept on curlers all the time.  I kept waking up every time I would roll over or shift my head on the pillow.   :P  But, wow, what curls I had the next morning!  Removed the curlers, finger combed my hair a little and pinned back the sides with a clip.  Surprisingly enough, the curls looked great all day long and held their shape.  I thought that they would be gone by day's end without benefit of styling gel, hair spray or anything.  So despite being a bit uncomfortable for sleep, this is definitely something I will try again.  I think next time I will try twisting the strand of hair before rolling it on the curler.

Other
Stepson has been in the Army for an entire week now and, aside from the traditional "I'm ok" phone call, we haven't heard a peep from him.  We're assuming no news is good news.

I bought 3 new blouses over the weekend, the latest addition in my effort to bring my wardrobe into the realm of classic.  Eventually I want to have more blouses and dressy tops than tees and pullover tops.  I abided by my rule that for every new item of clothing I buy, a similar item must go, i.e., a shirt for a shirt.  So I've started another giveaway bag of clothing that will eventually find its way to Good Will.  I even threw away an older top that was stained and had lost its shape.  Why in heaven's name was I still wearing that?!  (--Even if only at home)

I've also been making an effort to wear mascara and lipstick every day...well, at least every work day.  Today's lipstick is Blue Rose by N.Y.C.  The 4 day weekend messed up my walking schedule, however today I'll get back to it.

Style
I've come to some conclusions and want to share them here.  I made this a separate entry because, well, it's important to me and it deserves its own space.   :)  In a few weeks we'll be coming into some money.  Hubby's disability case has finally been settled and, while it's not a million dollars, it's a goodly size to us.  I had already told him before the settlement decision of my needing new clothes, so I'm sure hubby will let me spend whatever I need.

Now, I want to spend wisely and get some good, classic pieces.  But to that end, I have been thinking very hard this morning about me, about my style, my life, what makes me comfortable and what looks good/bad on me.  For my own notes, here's what I've decided thus far:

The do not's:
1.  I do not look good in a lot of the skirts I own; weed them out.
2.  I do not look good in overly feminine things; no ruffles, no bows, nothing too dainty.
3.  I do not look good in most of the dresses I own; weed them out.
4.  I do not feel comfortable in stockings, pantyhose, knee hi stockings or
    anything else nylon.
5.  I do not feel comfortable in high heels.

The do's:
1.  I do look good in trousers; need to buy more of them.
2.  I do look good in clean cut, classic style blouses; need to buy more.
3.  I do enjoy wearing socks.
4.  I do enjoy wearing loafers and low heeled shoes.

Bottom line...why am I wearing anything in which I'm not totally, completely, 100% comfortable??   :-?

My list so far, of purchases I need to make, includes:
1.  Trousers, at least 5-7 pair
2.  Blouses, at least 5-7 more
3.  Loafers, at least 2 pair
4.  Socks--you can never have too many pair

By the by, my style icon is Katharine Hepburn, who never personally owned a skirt or dress (wow!).

Hair
No wash day.  Length has some waves thanks to night braids.
I must confess something...
I'm having the urge to cut my hair again.   :-/  Why?  *shrug*
So I guess I'm on the 2-week watch and I'll track the urge to cut on a scale from 1 to 10; 1 being "no way" and 10 being "cut now".  Today I'm at a 9.   :(
I'm going right now to read my journal entries from last February/March, when I chopped off most of my length.  Honestly, though, I suspect the weather has a lot to do with this feeling.  The cold temperatures seem to have affected me greatly this year and I think I have cabin fever.   :o

Don't do it!  Think of yr sponge roller curls, all yr time and effort over the past year!  Wait those two weeks, and then two more; wait until it warms up.  Change something else; try a new hairstyle.  Your hair looks great the way it is, and it'll look even better over the next few months as it grows longer.

What's the longest you ever had yr hair, btw?

Hair
--Still long!   :D  Sorry I haven't made an entry since Monday; our area was one the many hit hard by the ice storm.

Anyway...on Monday I was at a 9 on my hair cutting scale.  Tuesday I was still at a 9 and even picked out the cut I wanted.  By Wednesday I was down to a 5 and yesterday, Thursday, the urge was all but gone.  --A prime example of why we wait at least 2 weeks, people, before chopping it all off.   ;)

I suspect the Fiorentino handsoap I had been using the entire month of January was getting my hair TOO clean.  My hair was beginning to look a little drab, with no sheen or luster.  So yesterday, the first day we were able to make our way into town, I bought a bottle of Pantene Ice Shine to try and also picked up a packet of something called Smooth n' Shine.  It's basically a deep moisturizer.  I figured it would be greasy, but the product actually has the consistency of cold cream.  The directions say to leave the product on for a minute and then rinse.  But I slathered it on my hair from top to bottom and left it on all night.  Washed this morning with the Ice Shine, conditioned with Classic Care.  My hair seems to be perking up already, which only tends to confirm my feelings about the soap.

So no fear, Skyfire, I have regained my sanity and will NOT be cutting.   8-)  The longest I've reached is waist length before I had it cut to shoulder length.  Thanks for your caring words.  *hugs*

Other
Monday night we got hit with another ice storm, the second winter in a row.  We received around 3 inches of solid ice that night, then most of Tuesday we had sleet and freezing rain coming down, THEN Tuesday night it switched to snow.   :P  Thankfully, we did not lose power this time, although the counties south of us did--they are still without electricity today.  I hear parts of Kentucky may not regain their power until mid February!   :(  Those people are in my prayers; I certainly remember being without power for 3 days last year.  I can't imagine going without for 3-4 weeks.  The university was closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but reopened today.  Yours truly, however, is taking a vacation day...if our car can't make it back up the hill to our house (which it won't--it's sitting at the bottom of said hill as I type), then there's no way I'm going to work.

The area is still struggling to  dig out from underneath 8 inches of crap (4 inches of ice with 4 inches of snow on top).  Most of the city streets are clear...but I don't live in the city.  At least we were finally able to drive our car back up the hill to the garage yesterday.  Hubby brought me to work today.  Gee whiz, do I hate winter.   :P

Did a wash last night with my Ice Shine, then set my hair on sponge rollers (no conditioner, no lotion or gel).  I gently twisted each section of hair before rolling it, which produced more waviness than actual curls.  My daughter said I was cute wearing my satin sleep cap.   ::)  I have GOT to get one of those travel pillows Sakina mentioned, to save my neck when I sleep on curlers.

Washed this morning with Ice Shine and conditioned with the Smooth n'Shine.  I've noticed that my thin spot (up front) is not noticeable when my hair is clean.  I guess greasy hair tends to separate more than clean hair.  *sigh*
Curse you, thinning hair.   :-[Other
Hubby relayed the message from our accountant about how much our tax returns will be this year.  I said, "Well, there's the money for my new clothes!"   ;)  Of course, we'll first set aside money for the house insurance (not due until May, I think).  But there will still be plenty of money for new clothes.  I was going to wait for hubby's disability settlement to arrive, but it could be two months before we see that money.  I need clothes sooner rather than later.  For weeks now I've been doing some online window shopping; I now understand why some women spend so much time at this.  It's not easy finding good quality clothing that doesn't cost a fortune!

No wash day.  Hair is in a slicked back (high) ponytail.  It took me a few minutes this morning to make sure none of the thinness (sp?) showed through...  My concern is that, eventually--maybe sooner than later, I'll have to start washing my hair every day in order for the thin sections not to show.  When hair is clean and parted on the right side, you cannot see my scalp.  Honestly, deep down I know I'm just delaying the inevitable.  I'm afraid this business of cutting and keeping my hair short(er) is a matter of when and not if.

Sakina, not yet...the thyroid will be tested in this year's annual wellness screening, which happens on the 24th of this month.  You know what?  Hubby and I will be seeing our GP this morning for a routine visit; I believe I'll mention this to him and ask for a hormone check.  Couldn't hurt, eh?   ;)  Thanks for that reminder, dear.  *hugs*

So...wash day with Pantene Ice Shine and conditioned with Classic Clean.  Hair is currently down although, the wind is so fierce today, I may have to put it up as a measure of precaution.

Fashion, dahling
Grey trousers with a top that is difficult to describe...it's a tunic length top with various shades of purple and white small splotches.  Sounds terrible though it's really very attractive.  Um, anyway, I've added a black cinch belt with silver-tone buckle, black flats, and some vintage pale lavendar gem earrings from Avon, circa 1970's.  They used to belong to my sister back in the day, but she never wore them.  Somehow they ended up in my jewelry box long ago and I've been wearing them ever since.  Ahem...   ::)
Two coats of Maybelline Great Lash mascara in blackest black.  On the lips today we have Jordana Pretty Shine luxury gloss in the shade of "gorgeous", a pretty medium red.  Where are all those wolves who used to whistle at a dame as she sauntered by?  I deserve a little howl today!   8-)

ROFL
I'll take it!   ;)

Well, the doctor's visit was sort of good news/bad news.
Hubby and I do NOT have salmonella (our reason for going in the first place).  We were concerned because we do eat the Atkins peanut butter bars and over the weekend we had some...ahem, symptoms, shall we say.  Doc said it was just a bug going around and since we are both better now, nothing to worry about.  Okay, that was the good news.

While I was there, I did ask him about the hormone/thyroid situation.  He basically said, "Of COURSE you're hormone deficient--you had a complete hysterectomy!  We don't need to run tests because we already know your hormone levels are low!"  He used the metaphor of a house being powered by a generator.  The generator powers the house and produces electricity.  Take away the generator and what happens?  No electricity.  So no ovaries?  No estrogen, etc. etc.  Now, if I was a "normal" woman, I could probably be put on HRT (hormone replacement therapy).  But since cancer is a huge factor with me, no doctor in their right mind would even consider HRTs.

Bottom line is, as I suspected...my hair will continue to grow thinner and thinner...
*shrug*  I've said it once and I'll say it again:
I've been bald once and I can do it again if I must.
On the bright side, nowadays there are all kinds of great natural looking wigs.  But a wig purchase is quite a ways down the road...I hope!   :)
I have to say, too, that I'll take being ALIVE and BALD anyday over being dead and having a head full of hair, by golly.   8-)

I'm glad you don't have food poisoning and are feeling better!

Well, I'm glad you're here on LongLocks, hair or not!  Next time I see my Naturopath I'm gonna ask about your situation to see if there's another avenue to pursue.  If I can remember, that is.  :-[  I see her in a month.

This from last night's journal entry:

"I am so depressed right now I could almost cry.  I just took some photos of the top of my hair with the digital camera.  I had no idea it was *that* thin on top!  This came about because (A) I knew my hair was thinning and (B) today I spoke with our GP about hormone deficiency/hair loss.  Because of the cancer factor, no doctor would ever prescribe HRT for me--and rightly so.  I would never, never risk my health for the sake of hair!  On the other hand, I had no idea my hair has gotten so thin on top.  I took the photos to begin documenting the thinning process for my pals at Long Locks.  But seeing how far gone I am is pretty awful.  Now I guess the question becomes..when do I cut, not IF i cut.  *sigh*"

So, yeah...pretty torn up about this.  I went to sleep last night thinking about it and woke up this morning thinking about it.  I realize that my hair does not define me, does not define who I am on the inside.  I will certainly not stop being Trisha if I lose all of my hair.  I know this.  And yet, this hair has been a major factor in my life for the past 6 years, starting from the time when I lost it all to chemo.

Not being one to hold back in matters of health or hair, I want to share this journey with you.  I think I'll make a trip to my local health food store soon (Saturday if not before) and see if anyone there can offer me any options.  Though at this point, I must admit I am extremely doubtful.  I may go ahead today and set up an appointment with my stylist.  *gulp*

Now I understand why women of a certain age have short hair...it's because most women who are post menopausal have lost all of their estrogen and their hair falls out.  It's probably not because they wanted to get it all hacked off, they had no choice.

I never thought about the post menopausal factor and shorter hair.

Do you do scalp massages?  I really like Moonchild's Hair Growth Oil.  She sells it on ebay.

(((hugs))) I wish I had a magic solution for you.

What about soy?  It is a phytoestrogen, do you eat it?  Mmmm...edamame.

I had a friend that had naturally thin hair and she kept it permed to give volume on top and lightened so the scalp wasn't too noticeable.

Of course, you could keep your length and become the queen of beautiful scarves!

Sakina  *hugs*  all good suggestions, but none of those will help.  My hair loss is caused by lack of estrogen.  I adore you for trying to help, though!   8-)

Well, exactly one week from today, I will have a new, shorter 'do.  It's going to be around mid-neck length, so not super short.  If I've got the right style (and I believe I have) then there should still be enough hair for me to play with, as in curling it on rollers, etc.  You know me--I always want to get these things done NOW.   ::)  However next Wednesday is the soonest appt. available with my stylist.

I'm slowly coming to terms with this hair loss issue.  And who knows?  --Maybe *this* is as thin as I'll get.   :-?

Oh, Mom... *hugssss*

My paternal grandmother had naturally thin hair that thinned out even more (like yours) as she got older. She wore hairpieces all the time.

Before you give up and set up a hack job appointment, have you thought about consulting a dermatologist? They might be able to prescribe something that could help.

And just in case they can't, my offer to grow for the both of us still stands. :-*

Hair  (or what's left of it!   ;D  )
*snort*  Oh my...see, I'm already finding the humor in this.   ;)
Angel, my internet daughter, you know I love you and your offer is more appreciated than I can ever say.  But no, my dear.  I want you to grow your hair for yourself and no one else.  Love ya, kiddo!   8-)

Wash day with Pantene Ice Shine (conditioned with Classic Clean).  Once I get The Cut, I'll be adding the Ice Shine volumizing mousse "maximum hold".  I've got my hair put up in a little twist so it's up off my neck.  One good thing about having shorter hair, it should help a little with the hot flashes!

Fashion, dah-ling
I'm to have $500 to spend on my new wardrobe.  Sheesh  :o  that's a lot of money just to spend on ME alone.  But I'm not going to have a problem spending this money because I desperately need new rags.  I did find a great looking site online for shoes that I'll be trying out.  It's called 6pm.com -- has anyone shopped there?  I'm impressed because they have a wide range of widths (I need a wide shoe) but the shoes are still very stylish looking.

Yeah, some of their stuff is whacky but I was able to find several shoes that I like.  In fact, I've already ordered one pair and I hope it fits.

Hair
2 1/2 days until The Cut.  I'm ready...I mean, I feel as if I'm okay with this event.  Who knows, though?  --I may get in the chair and panic!  Anyway, it's a wash day, so hair is down.  Do you want to hear some irony?  I'm juuuuust a centimeter, literally, away from reaching BSL.  And now I'm cutting it off.   ;D  Ain't life a hoot?!   ;)  So, I think this morning may have been the last time I wash my hair before...you know when.  I mean, my stylist is going to wash it anyway before she cuts it, so why do it twice?  Over the weekend I bought some Pantene Volumizing products--the shampoo, conditioner and the mousse.

Fashion, dah-ling
Oh my god.  I spent so much money this past weekend it's insane.  --And I'm not done yet.  ---And my husband is a willing participant!!   ;D
I've never before spent *that* much money in so little time.  But all of the clothes I've bought thus far are good quality items that should last for quite a while.  My husband and daughter helped a great deal because I'm just not real swift at putting together outfits.  Basic stuff, yeah, I'm good.  But when it comes to finding complimentary colors and stuff?  I need all the help I can get.  At one point yesterday I felt  like a barbie doll...I was in a changing room and they were handing me clothes left and right, playing dress up!   ;D  Seriously, though, I bought a TON of new office clothes but I honestly have needed to do this for at least 5 years now.  My daughter said, "Mom, when you said you were going to buy a whole new wardrobe, I didn't think you really meant it!"  I'm still working on the shoe situation, waiting for my orders to arrive.  I hope I don't have to try on any more clothes for a very, very long time!!!

So...new clothes...new hair coming on Wednesday...thankfully, though, same ol' Trisha on the inside.   8-)

It's been quite awhile since I tried the Sheer Volume shampoo, so I don't remember if it left a "coating" or not. This is, of course, a much different coating than the opaque shampoos leave. :P So far as I can recall, Sheer Volume shampoo was just a clear Pantene shampoo. No more, no less.
Sheer Volume conditioner is very light. I have used it as a light conditioner before in CWC routines.
Full & Thick shampoo is clear, but leaves a bit of a coating on the hair to plump it up. It's not waxy or greasy or anything. Just feels a bit strange after washing & rinsing.
The matching conditioner is medium weight. Not the lightest in the range, but certainly not the richest. I did not notice any additional body or fullness when using these products, but they are nice.

Hair
No wash day; hair is in a high ponytail...probably one of the last ponytails I'll ever make with my own hair.  Ugh.   :P  1 1/2 days until The Cut.  Starting to feel a little nervous about tomorrow.  Not in a bad way, though; more of a "let's get this done" nervous.  I'm trying not to engage in too many of the "lasts" because I get a little knot in my stomach...you know, last time I make a ponytail, last time I'll be able to wear this clip, etc., etc.  That type of behavior is too melodramatic and not like me at all.  I refuse to be sucked into feeling sorry for myself.   8-)

CUT DAY

Wednesday 18 February 2009
Hair
About 4 1/2 hours until the big cut happens.  I just threw my hair up in a ponytail this morning; didn't spend a lot of time on it, since it's going away later.  Ugh.  I'm nervous, excited, happy, sad, anxious, hopeful.  You name it, I'm feelin' it.   :P

At least the secretary is back today, so I can hide back in my own little office.  Aahh, I missed you, comfy chair!   :)  Almost time for me to swap the backup tapes (which I do every Wednesday).  I'll sign off for now but will probably give y'all an update after I return from my stylist.

CUT DAY
part dos

Wow.  My hair looks (and feels) amazing.   :)
First let me say that Sheryl at Wanda's Coiffures should have her fingers insured for a million dollars.  Seriously!  She lathered up my hair twice, giving my head a good but gentle scritching.  Good grief, did that ever feel wonderful...  Sometime I wonder if a lot of women don't go to a salon *just* to get their hair washed by someone else.  Magically relaxing!

I showed Sheryl a picture of the cut I wanted (because I'm good like that) and she agreed that it's a great one.  The example in the picture was short, just below the ears, but I asked Sheryl to cut it a bit longer, around mid-neck.  I kept my eyes closed the whole time and really wasn't too stressed when she began snipping.  Well, to my surprise, Sheryl  only cut my hair to collar length.   :o  So I *still* have plenty of hair to play with!!!   8-)  I have to admit, this is a very good length for my face.  I like this style...but, then, the true test will come when I have to wash and style it myself.  Of course I'll post pictures as soon as I can.  Whew!  ...glad that's over with!

Hair
Woke up still loving the cut.   :)  Didn't wash today; just combed it out a little and used a small amount of hairspray.  My hair is even long enough for me to make a ponytail--a small one, but a ponytail nonetheless.  I'm getting lots of compliments on the cut.  Hubby and daughter like it a lot, too, and daughter thinks the new cut makes me look younger.  MUST TAKE PHOTOS for y'all to see!!!

Fashion, dah-ling
So with the new clothes and the new cut, it's amazing how wonderful I feel...simply wonderful.  It's as if I've been refreshed...rebooted with new software or something!   ;D

A couple of hitches in the wardrobe makeover, though:
1)  The shoes I ordered from 6pm.com are too small, so I must return them.  Haven't decided if I'll try a half-size larger or simply try to find some locally.  *sigh*  Curse you, wide feet.
2)  One of the tops from Van Heusen has to be returned; the tiny ruffles on the front frayed quite badly and that's simply not acceptible.  I must say, I was very disappointed in the Van Heusen selection for ladies this trip.  VH has always been my go-to store...but no more.   :(

Hair
First wash day, post-cut.  I am now using the Pantene Volumizing line--shampoo, condish, mousse, and hair spray.  Calm down...I won't be using the mousse and hair spray every day.   ;)  This weekend I need do to a vinegar rinse.  I'll also wash and condition, then let hair air dry so I can find out what this cut looks like with very little fussing.  --Cause you know I'm all about the no fussing where hair is concerned!

You have no idea how happy I am to realize that my hair is still long enough for me to use barettes and clips and combs and make a ponytail with.  CBL (collar bone length) is definitely the perfect length for me.  --Short enough to aid in the disguise of thinning spots, yet long enough to play with.   8-)

Fashion, dah-ling
Wearing a cranberry red corduroy button-down top today with wide leg chinos, grey socks and black loafers.  Casual yet smart looking.  One of the two pair of boots I ordered, the brown pair, has shipped and will hopefully arrive sometime next week.  The other pair, the black boots, are on back order and will not ship until May.
MAY?!   :o  Are you kidding me?  Argh.  Oh well.  By the time they arrive (IF they arrive) I won't need them and I can stash them away for next winter.  Still need to mail back the pair of brown shoes that don't fit...and I have to pay for return postage.  I don't think I like that part of the deal and I'm not sure I'll order anything else from them.

Other
No big plans for the weekend, thank goodness.  Need to do the usual cleaning, laundry, and grocery shopping.  I've been feeling chilly since last Saturday, unusual for me since I'm usually Miss Hot Flash.  So my goal this weekend is to finally warm up!   ;)

(and take photos of my hair!!)

Hair
I still haven't taken any photos of my new hair.   :o  --Must remember to do that...maybe tonight.  I do like this shorter length.  However, knowing that I'll probably never have long hair again makes me a little sad.  It is what it is, though, and I have to roll.
Washed and conditioned this morning with the volumizing line; left the towel wrapped around my hair while I ate breakfast, etc.  Then I used the blow fryer (on low) with a round brush to curl the ends under a bit.  Some hair spray set everythiing and I was ready to go.
My next experiment will be to wash and set it at night, with sponge rollers, to see if I can get some crazy curls going.   ;)

Fashion, dah-ling
Grey pinstripe trousers, slightly darker grey blouse, black pumps.  Thank God I have hips--I know, you don't see that in print every day, huh?!  But seriously...the trousers are too large and my hips are the only thing keeping them from dropping to my ankles!   :o  I guess I need to exchange them but, egads, I hate having to do that.  *sigh*

Other
Hubby and I saw our eye doctor this morning and both of us need new (stronger) lenses.  No surprise there.  This time I will be getting TWO sets of specs; one will be my regular bi-focal prescription and the other will be for reading/computer work only.  This way I won't have to crank my head back to read my pc screen.  Can't wait to get them!

Hair
No wash day; hair is down with the side bobby pinned.  And no, I still haven't taken pictures of my new 'do.   ::)

Fashion, dah-ling
Navy trousers with a rust-red corduroy shirt and black loafers.  The brown boots I ordered are too narrow and have been sent back.  I also cancelled the back-ordered black boots.  No sense in allowing them to arrive in May when I know they're too small.  So that's 3 strikes on shoes.   :P  You know what this means, don't you...?  This means I have to start visiting the *real* shoe stores in town.  --These stores should have a better selection of shoes, and at least offer me the opportunity to order wide width shoes that will fit, but the cost will be higher.  However it's important to have shoes that fit well and that give good arch support, especially as I get older.

Hair
No-wash day; hair is up.  Today I am wearing a light blue plastic barrette that I wore in elementary school.   :o  How cool is that?!  LOL  Actually, I have almost all of that group of barrettes my mother bought for me in...gosh, what year would that have been?  1973 or '74, I think.  There's light blue, pink, white, red, light green and yellow.   :)  I think mom got her money's worth out of those barrettes!!!   ;D

Ok, I'm writing myself a note right now, to remind myself to take pictures of my hair this weekend...sheesh.

Fashion, dah-ling
Dark wash jeans, light blue button front blouse (hence the matching light blue barrette), blue stripey socks and black loafers.  I really must go shoe shopping this weekend, as much as I dread it.

Okay...my husband and inlaws are starting to drive me crazy with this trip to SC for stepson's graduation from basic.  So far the plan is to leave on Wednesday the 25th and come back on Monday the 30th (I think).  My daughter and brother in law will be in charge of taking care of the house and cats; mostly daughter, since BIL may be out on the road.  But things keep getting added to this trip...first, it was just the 4 of us (me, hubby, inlaws) driving to SC for graduation and back home--easy, clean, quick and painless.  Then we find out that stepson's bio mom is also planning to attend graduation (NOT with us--separately).  So we may have to deal with running into her.  Stepson is now wondering if we can drive him to Augusta, GA after graduation, where he'll receive his AIT schooling.  We haven't said, one way or another, but I imagine we'll end up doing it.  So now hubby is talking about renting a van instead of driving the inlaws car.  And would I like to stop in Savannah, GA and try to eat at Paula Deen's restaurant?  And maybe we can stop in Charlotte and have a meal with a half sister of my mother in law?  And, and, and.

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm already at the point where I don't even want to go.  I have such a bad feeling about this trip, I can't even put it into words.  It's nothing specific, like I feel as if we'll die on the highway or anything.  Just a bad feeling in general.  *sigh*  I've told hubby that I just don't want this to turn into a circus.  You know?  Maybe it's just that I/we haven't taken a long trip like this in...gosh, 11 years?  10 at least.  So maybe I'm just out of practice.  Maybe once the packing of bags begins and I actually commit to getting in the vehicle and switch my brain into "road trip!!" mode then I'll feel better.   :-/

Hair
No-wash day; hair is down.  STILL haven't taken hair photos.   :-[  Have written self yet another reminder note.   ::)

Fashion, dah-ling
Did I tell you I finally bought new shoes?  (searches recent journal entries).  I bought 3 pair:  2 pair of SAS loafers, one in dark brown and one in black, and one pair of lighter brown dress heels.  I already have a pair of black dress heels; I also already own 2 pair of dressier flats (black and brown).  I may need to have the new brown SAS loafers stretched a tad more (across the instep--of which mine is high) but otherwise I love 'em.

Other
My daughter received a letter from stepson (her stepbrother) on Monday, dated the 21st of February.  In it he expresses his fear of not being physically able to pass some of the requirements for graduation.  It seems as if a recruit must do a certain number of sit ups, push ups, and run 2 or 3 miles in a certain number of minutes.  And stepson cannot perform those tasks within the time limit.  (He will tell his stepsister this, but not us.)  Now...if he cannot pass those physical tests then the Army cannot advance him to AIT school.  At best, he would be "recycled" for a few weeks to determine whether he can improve.  Or he could receive a general discharge that, hubby says, would turn into an honourable discharge after a few weeks.  So at this point, who knows whether the trip to SC is on or not?  As in the past, when dealing with stepson, we are left hanging, waiting to see what happens.  I hate that.

Hair
Curls!!!   ;D  Washed and set my hair last night; used Pantene ice shine shampoo, no conditioner, no setting gel.  Used my large sponge rollers, put on my satin sleep cap and had curls galore this morning.  Although, since my hair is shortetr, I think I may need to start using the medium size curlers.  With our wind today, I probably should have used hair spray, but oh well.  *shrug*  Posted a photo for y'all to see.    :D

Hair
Washed this morning, since the slept-in curls looked pretty blech.  Allowed hair to air dry; wearing a red barrette.  No mousse, no spray, no heat.

Fashion, dah-ling
Casual Friday...wearing jeans with sparkly things on the back pockets, a white button down shirt, grey socks and black loafers.  That was the best I could manage this morning.   ;D

Aww, thank you, honey.  *hugs*   ;)

Washed this morning with Pantene Volumizing shampoo and conditioner.  Honestly, I cannot tell a difference in the volumizing shampoo and the ther other Pantene lines, as far as my hair appearing fuller.  I will continue to use it because it's not hurting my hair, but it's certainly not helping in that respect.  Live and learn.  *shrug*
I didn't style it either this morning; just allowed it to air dry, then put in a snap barrette.  I guess I should at least use a curling iron on it every now and then, but I have no motivation to do so.  Plus it's hard, living in a house with only one bathroom...  Oh well, not a big deal.

Other
I was talking on Friday to a friend/co-worker about stepson's graduation and the concerns he had about not being able to pass the physical requirements test.  My friend, who was in the Army many years ago, said not to worry.  --That "they" (the Army) had advanced men for a lot less than being unable to pass the tests and if "they" really want him then stepson will pass.  Of course my friend is right...I hadn't thought of it that way.  Stepson telephone yesterday afternoon; he can now do everything on the test but he's about one minute shy on the running part.  So at this point, we're all pretty confident of him graduating, which means the SC trip is on.

Hair
Wash day; after towel drying I used the blow fryer to remove a little more of the wetness.  I only dried it to damp, however, not totally dry.  After eating breakfast and whatnot, I used a large barrell curling iron on the hair.  The bangs of my side part are mildly irritating because they keep wanting to fall into my eyes.  This will not do!  --So once again I'm wearing a small snap barrette.  When my hair was longer I could just tuck that part of my hair behind my ear and viola, no worries.  *sigh*

Need to change my avatar, since my hair is no longer that length, but it makes me a little sad to do so.   :-/  Ah well...c'est le vie.

Finally, finally I have my reading glasses.   :D  Just picked them up this morning--so far, so good.  It's nice being able to see my pc screen without the neck craning!

Having breakfast tomorrow morning with my dear friend LB.   :)  Can't wait!

About 10 days until we leave on vacation.  I know there's plenty of time, but I do not want to wait until the last minute to decide what to take and what not to take.  I am an organizer and a planner, so I like to have these things laid out in my mind ahead of time.  I even ordered a new bathrobe for the trip!  I've needed one for a while now, as my old one was stained, etc.  The new one arrived yesterday, so that's one thing stricken from the list.  I need to get one of my new pair of shoes stretched.  I need to get my new reading glasses adjusted.  Hmm, I may as well start making a list now...

I find it best to make lists before traveling too.  It's also helpful to refer to it when you're packing to come back home, just to make sure you don't leave anything behind.  I had to learn the hard way.  I once left an entire outifit and a cd player behind. :P

Other  Hubby and I had our cholesterol numbers done this morning.  His are fine (of course!) but, according to "industry standards", mine are not (of course!).  When the doc saw that my total cholesterol was 311 I thought he was going to have a heart attack!  Now, I knew my number was high; I also knew the doc would go down that you-must-take-drugs road.  As soon as he started to go that way, I told him in no uncertain terms that I WILL NOT take any kind of statin drugs.  Niacin, yes.  Statins, no.  I've read too many horrible things.  To my surprise, he didn't argue very hard at all.  So I now get to take Niacin and Omega-3 oil.   8-)

Other  6 days until we leave for SC (not counting today).  It's a good thing I started making lists, since it seems as if every day I think, "Oh, I need to remember XYZ before we leave."   :-?  It's pretty sad that I'm looking forward more to the trip being OVER than actually GOING...  I know I would be more excited if it was just me and hubby going on a real vacation.

Other  Secretary is out today, so guess where I am?

I'm getting together with my cancer survivor group at lunch today.

I did indeed have lunch with friend T yesterday.  I bought...I told her it was a belated birthday gift, her birthday being back in October.  But the truth is that I know she doesn't have a lot of money.  She has a crappy job and well, truthfully, she probably doesn't manage her finances as well as she ought.  Even though I was totally worn out afterwards from wandering around a HUGE antique store, I had a good time.  Sometimes it's nice to simply wander around with a buddy.   :)

Not counting today, since it's almost halfway over, there are 3 more days until we leave for SC.  Even with my three lists, I feel very unprepared for this trip.   :-/  There are still too many variables left undecided for my comfort zone.  But all I can do is try my best to have a good time.

So.  We leave for SC tomorrow morning at 7...and we STILL do not know for sure whether stepson will pass his PT and be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony.   >:(  He's scheduled to take the test again today, but warned that he may not have access to a telephone (to let us know one way or the other).  If he does not pass the PT then he will not participate in graduation and will be held over in a training unit.  In which case we'll find something else to do in SC.

I have such a feeling of dread about this trip.   :(   There are just way too many things up in the air to suit me.  I hope once we get on the road I'll start to feel better.  So my friends, this will be the last entry for a while.  I should be back online April 1 and will let y'all know what happened.

Hair  I was supposed to get a trim yesterday, 6 weeks after my cut.  Did I go?  No.   8-)  I cancelled because...well, because I'm just don't want to get my hair cut every 6 weeks.  As much as I admire the skill of my stylist, I hate salons.  My hair looks fine and as you can imagine, it makes me happy to let it grow longer for a while.  So there.   ;D  Aside from that, it's a no-wash day; hair is up.

Other  I'm so happy to be back at home, back in a routine (as is hubby).  I can honestly say that was one of the worst trips I've ever been on.   :(  Unfortunately the bad outweighed the good.  The one bright spot was getting to see and spend time with stepson, who shall herewith be called Army son.   :)  The change in that young man is stunning, just stunning.  He didn't have to say one word; he only had to turn to face us and we could all see the difference.  Before he stood and walked hunched over, as if trying to disappear into himself.  Now he stands tall and proud, full of confidence.  The self esteem fairly oozes from him.   :)  So kudos to the Army!

The trip itself, though, was stressful.  Hubby and I sat in the front of the car, with hubby doing all of the driving (his choice), and his parents rode in the back.  His mother, a former teacher (uh huh, I can see some of you nodding your heads already...) was "helping" give directions and warnings.  I dearly love both of my in-laws but there were several times when I wanted to duct tape her mouth shut.  Then the ex-wife was there, Army son's biological mother.  It's only natural she would want to see her son graduate from basic, we understood this.  And she was behaving herself--we all were for Army son's benefit.  But her very presence makes us tense up.  There were thousands of people on base, milling around, all trying (like us) to collect our soliders and transport them to Fort Gordon, Georgia.  Well, all of that extreme stress caught up with hubby on Friday afternoon late and he had an "episode".  He couldn't get his breath, his lips and fingers began to tingle and he got nauseous.  So he and I got to ride in an ambulance to the Dwight D. Eisenhower on-base hospital!   :(  Shortly after the medics got hubby on some oxygen, though, he started coming around and talking again...I always know he's all right when he talks.   ;)  After many tests, all of which came back normal, the doctor suggested an overnight stay in a different, civilian hospital.  But hubby and I were/are convinced that what he had was a good old fashioned stress-induced anxiety attack.  He signed out AMA and off we finally went to drop numbly into our cheap motel beds.

It rained most of the time we were down there.  The fire alarm went off in the building where graduation was held.  What else?  *sigh*  There were so many little annoyances that I can't remember them all--and don't want to!  We were so fed up with the whole shebang that hubby drove straight through from Augusta, Georgia to Cape Girardeau, Missouri on Sunday.  We started out a little before 8 that morning and arrived home around 9:45, I think.  It was worth the exhaustian to get back home, though.  Hubby and I have vowed to never take another long trip with his parents again.   >:(   And I think it'll be quite a while before we take another "vacation"...   :o

Welcome back, Trisha!  Yay Army Son! ;D  Sorry that your trip didn't go so well.  Although, I'm sure your stepston was happy to see you all there and witness his graduation and transformation.

As I was reading through the list of your husbands symptoms, I immediately thought anxiety.  That's happened to me so many times...all too familiar.  Good thing it was nothing too serious.

Yep, it's been very rainy here in Georgia, still is.  It's a great time for us, as all of the recent rain has brought an end to our 3 year drought, but I suppose it isn't a great time for visitors. :-[

As for your hair, I wouldn't worry about not getting it trimmed every 6 weeks.  As long as it's healthy and still looks good, who cares?  I think stylists sometimes recommend coming in regularly just to keep business up.

Welcome back, Trisha! :)

Good to hear that the Army training has had a positive effect on your stepson. Anti-military as I may be, I have known it to benefit people (ahem, boys) who are in dire need of discipline. Let us hope that your stepson has a rewarding career ahead of him.

I'm sorry about the trip.  Reg. your MIL.  My late paternal grandmother was the same way too. ::)  She did it to grandpa and later she did it to my dad all the time when she rode in the back.  I'm sure all good intentions were there.  I say "did it to" because it really felt that way.

Aww, no need to be nervous. Curlgirl's right - dentistry has come a long way in 30+ years. Fillings are basically a breeze. Last year, I had 2 done in under an hour. No sedation or anything. And they basically had to reconstruct the back of one molar because it had broken off. I was amazed at how quick and easy the entire process was.
You'll do fine. :) Oh! And ask for the white porcelain stuff - it's well worth the price. ;)

Other  Man, you gals aren't kidding about replacing a filling being quick and relatively easy.   :)  My dentist, a great guy, by the way, asked if I wanted to be numbed or not.  I said I didn't know.  Let's try without, he says, and we can always stop if you need [it].  Okee-dokee.  There were a couple of places that gave me reason to curl my fingers into a fist, spots that had decayed underneath the filling.  But the rest was fairly easy and I'm glad I chose not to have the nummy-numbs.   8-)

Oh, I have my office back, thank goodness.  Drear, if I think about it later I'll ask my coworker what scent she was wearing yesterday.   ;)

Pantene Volumizing S&C are lighter than their Classic Clean counterparts. They don't add volume to your hair. They just don't contain as many conditioners so your hair is lighter and more responsive to volumizing products (ie. mousse).

And wooooot! 3 day weekend! :D

Other  On Sunday I noticed I kept feeling colder and colder--VERY unusual for me, as I'm so hot natured anymore.  Hubby noticed that the heat wasn't kicking on.  Long story short:  the heat exchanger on our furnace is cracked.   :(  And that's something which cannot be repaired.   :(  So today we're having a new furnace installed.   :(    :P  But, you know, $2400 is a lot less than what I imagined it would cost.  Hey, at least we have that much in our savings account (just) and the furnace did not die in the dead of winter.  *sigh*  It's always something.

Hubby is interviewing for a temporary job this morning, one that could possibly turn into full-time employment.  He would be the custodian of the church his mother attends and this would be an ideal job for him.  Keep your fingers crossed...

Hair  Wash day, hair is down.  Still haven't trimmed and don't intend to for a long while.  Even though my hair is thin at the crown, I'm still clinging to my long hair dreams.   :(

Other  Hubby's last day of doing custodial work at his mother's church will be tomorrow.  He volunteered his time, rather than getting paid to do the work, so he could leave whenever he wanted to.  --And he will not be applying for the job on a full time basis.  The physical demands (and mental!) of this job are simply too much for his poor old body.  Those church people expect their custodian to get there on Sunday in time to make coffee before the service begins!  Sheesh.

Well, I guess that would sort  of  ::) explain a story that I saw on tv a few weeks ago.

You know those reality tv programs that are filmed in the E.R.?  Well, there was a church in the mid west, where the whole congregation had gotten very sick and all ended up in the ER.  No one knew how everyone could all possibly get sick at the same time.  That is, until the police investigators figured out that it was the church custodian who poisoned everyone by putting arsenic in the coffee.  This was a true story btw.  Everyone survived except for one elderly man.  Pretty sad.

Perhaps the guy got fed up with being the custodian and having to make coffee too? :-/

But to change the subject...have you gotten any hummers yet?  I'm not sure when I should put out my feeder.

Other  La Diosa:  Yep, that would explain a lot!   :o

HUMMERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   :D   ;D   :D   8-)  Yes, they have returned to our area and I'm so excited!  Hubby caught a glimpse of the first one Sunday afternoon, so I put out a feeder.  On Monday I thought a saw the tail end of one zooming past the front window.   Yesterday morning I saw another hummer as it flew away from the feeder.  Then this morning I got to see one actually drinking from the feeder.  So, yes, they are back!  La Diosa, there's no need to put out a feeder until you actually spot a hummer.  They will make their presence known.   8-)

Hair  Washed again this morning.  I think I'm going to play it by ear for a while; if I feel like washing I will, if not then I won't, etc.  In other words, no set schedule.  Need to do a vinegar rinse this weekend.  Posted a pic so everyone here can see me in all of my glory.   ;D  I really like the length I'm at now.

Other  Some things never change...  Army son has been going through money as fast as kernels of wheat fall through a wide-guage sieve.  Granted, it is his money and he's free to be broke if he wants.  But he's supposed to return home on the 27th for his divorce hearing and he MUST buy a round trip airplane ticket to do so.  Sigh.

I sent you a pm.   ;)  And yeah, I know it's his responsibility.  But you see, when Army son left for basic, he asked his dad to handle his checking and savings accounts.  Hubby should have known better than to say yes, but he always tries to help.  Well, as you can imagine, it's been a headache from the get-go.  So when Army son is here on the 27th for his divorce hearing, hubby plans on handing everything back to him--and basically tell him what you said...this is YOUR responsibility and I do not need the
aggravation.   8-)

I am so excited because yesterday I found out that my hummers (sorry Angel!) will eat simple sugar water instead of the expensive store-bought stuff!  YAY!   :D   :D   :D
I tried sugar water last year and the finicky little buggers turned up their noses at it.  But that was halfway through the season, so they had already become accustomed to one sort of food.  They apparently do not like change.  For those interested, the recipe is 1 part white cane sugar (table sugar) to 4 parts water.  Now, I heated up the water a bit to ensure that the sugar completely dissolved.  I'm excited because table sugar is WAY less expensive than the store-bought stuff.  Have I said yay?  YAY!   :D   :D   :D

Thanks for sharing the nectar recipe! :D  I still have half a bottle of the purchased stuff.  I'll try making my own once I run out and see if they go for it.  If not, I'll have to wait until next season.  Do you think it would be safe to add food coloring to it?

Title: Re: Trisha 2009

No, I would not use food coloring, honey.  It is not necessary to do so to attract the little darlings.  There are even some unverified reports of the red dye/food coloring causing tumors, so why take the chance?   ;)

The bottom line, for me anyway, is this product DOES contain some items I'm not 100% sure about.  But it's better than having no protection at all when I don't or can't wear long sleeves and hat.

Hair  No wash day.  Hair is no more greasy than it usually is on no-wash days.  One of the goals for going no 'poo is only washing once a week (or longer than that).  But for now, I'm going to stick with my every other day washing routine, to give my scalp time to adjust to the baking soda.  Also the original recipe calls for one tablespoon of soda, but I'm going to cut back to just a couple of teaspoons at the most.  My hair is so fine that I don't want to risk any damage by using too much baking soda.

Hair  I washed 3 times total with the baking soda recipe, then gave it up.  After each washing my scalp felt tender, almost raw.  Even though baking soda is non-abrasive, it is apparently too much for my sensitive skin to handle.  I'm back to using Pantene Ice Shine shampoo.  However I'm not using commercial conditioner right now, opting instead for vinegar rinses every so often.

Other  I went home sick last Wednesday at noon and didn't return to work until today.   :(  Granted there was a weekend and a holiday in there but still...  I don't know if it was a sinus infection or a very bad cold but, either way, I'm glad it's gone.

Hair  Washed out the last of my pincurls yesterday, which had turned into waves at best.  I can't imagine setting my hair with either pincurls or sponge rollers every night the way women used to do.   :o  It had to be hard on their hair, yes?  But that was the style way back when...  You know, that would be a good experiment, sort of a 'week in the life of' type of thing.  Maybe I'll do that soon for a week, just to find out what it feels like.

Actually, as I understand it, they only washed and set their hair once a week. They would cover it or pin it up while bathing, sleeping, etc. But their hair was very stiff and shellacked into place. :P Kinda takes the glamour out of it, eh? If I may interject just a little...for your sake, of course...I wouldn't recommend getting a mall piercing. They're done with guns, which cannot be totally sterilized, and the jewelry that they use is very cheap, low grade surgical steel. They are done solely for fashion purposes without much consideration for professionalism. I can't even remember how many mall piercings I've had, but my ears rejected all of them.

It's best to visit a specialized shop that only does piercing and uses hollow needles. The environment is much more sanitary (like a doctor's office), the tools are totally sterile and are used only once - on you. The employees are total pros and are much more knowledgeable about the process of piercing and how to care for piercings afterwards.
My last 4 piercings were done this way and I will absolutely never go back to guns. In fact, I recommend avoiding earrings from accessory shops like Claire's, The Icing, etc. because of the cheap grade of their metals. They are notorious for causing infections and allergic reactions. Other jewelry is fine...necklaces, bracelets and so forth because they don't actually go into your body. Just thought I'd share before you end up doing something regrettable. :-*

I agree totally about the piercing guns.  Not only can they not be sterilized, but the trauma of the piercing can cause swelling.  I speak from personal experience there.  My first piercing was done by a doctor.  I had to let the second set heal over because of the trauma and infection from the gun, then had my uncle (a dentist) do it with a hypodermic needle, and put surgical thread loops in until they healed.  Worked like a charm.  Didn't excite my nickel allergy, and now I wear earrings (14k or SS) all the time.

I also agree about Claire's.  Don't buy earrings there.  You are asking for trouble.

I would not get periced at Claires either.  Mind you I had my nose periced at a Faces stall in the mall.  The only reason I let them do it was it was cause it was a East Indian lady who did it and nose pericing is in there culture and I had seen her do other people before.  She used a gun and I did not feel a thing nor did it bleed.  It was a little sore later so I put sea salt in a shot glass of water and put my nose in that! I will be getting my belly button done this summer at Don and Allen's regular tattoo shop, of which is very clean. :)

Hair  Wash day, nothing much else going on.

Other  Re:  mall piercings...  Hmm, well, I'm sorry to hear you gals had trouble with that but, honestly, I've never had a problem.  My very first ear lobe piercings were done by a doctor (and paid for by my big sis--thanks, sis   ;)   )  when I was 16.  When I was 18 I had my second set of lobe piercings done at none other than the local Wal Mart.  That was waaay back in 1980--I remember distinctly because I was pregnant.   :)  Back then, though, it was tough to find good looking *small* earrings that would compliment having two holes in each lobe.  So I let those holes grow closed.  Nowadays, thank goodness, stores sell tons of earrings in graduated sizes, so not a problem.  Then in...gosh, when was it?  Late 80's - early 90's I opted for one secondary hole in the left lobe, giving me a total of three.  Got that one done at Claire's in the local mall.  I've never had a problem with infection, either from the physician piercing or the guns, and I don't suffer from any type of metal allergy.  I'm trying to get this done as cheaply as possible while still maintaining a level of safety, if ya know what I mean.  If I could talk my daughter into doing it I would (as in bringing home a needle from the doctor's office where she works).  But I guess she can't stand the thought of inflicting the slightest amount of pain on her dear old ma.   8-)  I have to wait a few days anyway, to allow the aspirin to work out of my system, so it'll be a while yet before I have this done.  In any case, I appreciate all of the advice, I really do.

I went to a jeweller in a mall in the 80s or rather I dragged my mom there and begged her to give her consent when I was 8 so that was in the 80s and I had little studs put in each ear with a gun.  I thought they looked like real sapphires. ;D  Back then, having the doc do it wasn't an option here in Denmark and I don't think my mom thought of the sanitation or safety. :-[  I had terrible piercing infections and thought I was one of those who could only tolerate the purest of precious metals.  For two years I suffered but refused to let them grow up.  Now I can wear anything.  I guess the experience is individual how your piercing reacts.  Does your daughter have a colleague who wouldn't mind doing it?  I don't know what your laws say regarding this.

...Besides I haven't totally decided that I'm going to repierce the lobe.  I'm starting to second-guess myself.  The bottom line is, as usual, money.  I know another piercing would probably not cost a lot (at least I *think* not...?)  but now I'm thinking of better ways I could spend the money.  --Or SAVE the money.  Do I really need another hole in my head?   ;D  I could use more tops/blouses.  I still need a good pair of winter boots.  Am I only considering another piercing because of boredom?  Yeah, I think that's a good possibility.  *sigh*

Yikes!  Watch out for the boredom!  That led to the biggest chop of my hair, well that and I couldn't afford another tattoo at the time.  Gosh-that was more than 10 years ago and my hair is just now getting back to that original length.

It can be. It seems people become involuntarily self-destructive when bored, but it actually takes a conscious effort (and willpower) to do something productive.
I certainly don't recommend piercing or tattooing out of boredom. You're very likely to do something impulsive that you'll regret later. Spontaneous body art with no thought or meaning behind it is pointless.

Other  On Friday I decided that when I got off work at 3:00 I would get my ear lobe repierced.  I had gone back and forth for a few days, trying to decide if (A) I truly wanted the hole reopened and if (B) I should fritter away the money, spend it more wisely or save it.  In the end it came down to the decision that, yes, I honestly did want the hole opened and it was all right for me to fritter away the money.

I went to Claire's in my local mall, where I had my last piercings done quite a few years ago.  I told the lady at the counter what I wanted and she sent me over to pick out the earrings I wanted.  The lady, whose name is Julie, looked to be my age or a few years older; she had quite a few piercings herself which made me feel good.  But just for safety's sake, I asked her how many piercings she's done.  She said she's been piercing for more than 15 years.  I explained that the hole was only partially closed, which Julie confirmed when she positioned the stud.  One quick click of the gun and the stainless steel stud was in place.  --No pain and no blood.  Marvelous!  The whole she-bang cost me a grand total of $17.82 and took all of about 15 minutes.  In fact it took me longer to fill out the paperwork than anything else!  Something unusual DID happen though...  As soon as the earring was in place, I experienced an extreme sense of balance--of peace and harmony.  In fact, I'm still feeling very balanced.  Is that weird?  Is it only psychological, that I now have 4 earrings instead of 3?  I don't know, but I'm digging this harmonious vibe!   8-)  All in all it was a great experience and I'm glad I did it.

A coworker heard me rocking out to the Shinedown cd and decided I had to give the band Chickenfoot a try.

Don't get me wrong, they're all right but...  I don't know.  First of all, I've never been a big fan of Sammy Hagar and secondly, they sound a bit too mainstream for my taste.  *shrug*

Hair  I've begun washing every day with a diluted solution same as Angel.  (copycat, copycat!   ;D   )  I used tea instead of water for the dilution agent.  I was surprised at how little of the shampoo mixture it takes to make a good later--much less than what I expected.  Coolness   ;)

Got a sample in yesterday's post for the Aveeno Nourish + Volume.  I'll give it a whirl once I dilute the shampoo.

Hair  I need to be more dilligent about vinegar rinses now, since I'm using mousse and hair spray almost every day.  I've discovered that with those two products I don't need to use bobby pins to keep my hair out of my face or need to keep tucking my hair behind my ears.  The mousse also seems to help my hair look fuller on top, where my thin spot is located.  The thin spot doesn't appear to be worsening (thankfully) but I know it will never get better.

Other  We had a quiet and uneventful 4th of July, which is what we hoped
for.   :)  No fireworks for us but there were plenty going off around us.

I seem to be coming down with another UTI.   >:(  It's great having a daughter in the medical field who can just call in a prescription for dear old mom.   :)  She's still going to make me pee in a cup, though, to ensure proper dosage.   ;D  You know, women's bodies just aren't designed well, are they?  I mean, there are too many openings in one location that can cause problems.  --One thing goes wrong and KABLOOEY.   :P  Ah well, such is the life of woman.  I know, stop complaining and be glad I'm alive, eh?   ;)

Have you tried drinking cranberry juice?  If you have a cup of that every day, it often prevents and/or cures UTIs.  I had a few problems that way around the time I was going into menopause, and cranberry juice was the cure.

Hair  Did a vinegar rinse this morning.  I'm still amazed at how soft my hair feels after one of those.  Niiiiice.   :)  Giving my hair a rest today from the mousse and spray.  After all, what's the use of cleansing w/vinegar if you're just going to put product right back on?  Right now I'm using a hair comb to keep my bangs out of my face.  Hmm, I wonder how long my hair is now?  I should measure it, just for the 'ell of it...............   It's about 15 1/2".   :D  --NOT that I'm thinking of growing out my hair again.  I am not thinking of going there.  Am I?  *ahem*  No, no.   :-?

Other  I'm braving dial-up to make this entry; that's how much I love it here at LL.   8-)  It's going to be so delightful having a 4-day weekend.  I've not made any definite plans.  I need to clean the house but will not tear my hair out if it doesn't get done.  Life is too short to worry about dust bunnies.  No, I think I'm just going to enjoy having all of this extra free time by watching old movies, perhaps reading, and tending my hummingbirds.  There must be over 100 of those hungry, hungry hippos and they're draining my 4 feeders twice a day.  Such fascinating little creatures!

Hair  So...I've realized that it's okay for me to exist in the cycle of growing and cutting that I seem to be in.  Some people grow their hair long, never allowing scissors to touch their tresses.  That's okay.  Some grow their hair but get regular trims.  That's okay too.  I seem to do best with a sort of combination of the two...getting my hair cut once or twice a year yet allowing it to grow in between.  Whatever works, eh?

Other  La Diosa, the only red items we have in our yard are the hummingbird feeders.   :)  With hummingbirds, I truly believe it's a word of mouth thing--or in this case word of "beak".  You know, one hummer (apologies Angel) tells another, and they tell two friends, and they tell two friends, and so on and so on.  The first year I too only had one hummingbird.  I think the second year I may have also seen just the one little guy (that was about 6 or 7 years ago).  But every year since then, the numbers seem to double.  I guarantee you, lady, if you keep putting out the feeder eventually you'll see more and more.   8-)

For the next week and a half, Yours Truly will be out front "womanning" the reception area.   :(

Exactly!  It's your hair and it's on your head.  I'm still trying to find out what trimming needs my hair has to remain in top shape though.  I think I'm going to be a regular mini-trimmer every 3 months.

Hair  Washed as usual this morning; am trying to find *just* the right amount of mousse and hairspray to use without hair looking greasy or slicked down.  Will do a vinegar rinse this weekend.

Other  Day 5 of playing secretary; 3 more to follow next week.  Gloria Gaynor's song I Will Survive keeps playing in my head.   ;D  Honestly, it hasn't been overwhelming at all.  It's mostly answering the phone lines and telling people where to go--and I'm an expert at the latter.   8-)

Today ends week 5 of the 6 week healing period of the new piercing.  One more week and I can swap earrings, YAY!   :D

Talked with Army Son last evening over the telephone.  He sounded very happy and excited; his unit has finally been getting some hands-on training rather than just sitting in a classroom.  He'll graduate from AIT in another week or two and will probably deploy overseas sometime in November.

Daughter is doing well; working her two jobs keeps her busy and she's paying off overdue bills left and right.  Even if she wasn't my daughter I'd be proud of her.   :)

Hair  Nothing new to report; still washing (diluted) every day and using mousse/spray.  Still letting it grow for a while.  For how long?  *shrug*  I'll know it when it gets there.   ;)

Other  Two days left (after today) of filling in for the secretary.  You know, in a way I sort of enjoy sitting out front.  I get to see and interact with coworkers that I otherwise don't get a chance to do so.  I surely do miss being holed up in my quiet, peaceful office though!!

I've decided that Friday is soon enough to start switching out earrings in the new piercing.  Technically I should wait until Saturday but one day sooner can't hurt.  --If it ain't healed by then, 24 more hours ain't gonna matter.   8-)  I *almost* did it today but I'm trying to be good.   ::)

Other  Wellllll....I changed my mind about waiting until Thursday to take out my earring from the repiercing.   ::)  I gave in to temptation and did it this morning.   8-)  I mean, c'mon, the dang thing is already healed.  I do need to buy some smaller studs to wear in those holes, though.

I'm cranky today.  I hate feeling cranky but a lot of stupid little stuff has happened this morning, already before 9:00am.  The secretary is still out for today but I can't sit at her desk because, apparently, she's decided to remote in to her work pc from home....which means I cannot use her pc to remote in to MY office pc and do work-type things.   >:(  So I said screw it, I'll just sit in my office (which is within eye- and ear-shot of the front desk).  Harumpf.  My god, I hope this day goes by quickly.

Army Son is now saying he will NOT be deployed in October--he doesn't know exactly when his unit will go but, apparently, it will not be anytime soon.

August is THE worst, with its intense heat and withering humidity.  I long for Autumn and can only wait patiently for its soothing return.  *sigh*   :P

Classes for the fall term will start next Monday, the 24th.  It gets more and more difficult for me to be cheerful at seeing those returning students.

Hair  Nothing new.

Other  Had fun thrift store shopping yesterday afternoon, although next time I'll wait until cooler weather has arrived.  My friend T drove, since her vehicle has a/c.  But I think her system needs to be recharged or something, because the air definitely needed to be cooler.  Anyway, we visited 5 thrift shops and I was surprised to find something in each of them.  I bought one skirt and five tops.  I spent a grand total of $5 and that includes a $1 donation at the Safe Harbor (no-kill) animal shelter's store.   :)  Oh, here's something cool...  One of the thrift stores recycles the tee shirts that don't sell by turning them into tote bags.  The sleeves and neckline are trimmed off, then the bottom of the shirt is sewn shut, and tada!  One tote bag!   8-)

Indeed!  This is a new thing for me; before 2 or 3 years ago I'd never even set foot inside a Good Will store.  Not being snobby or anything, I just wasn't taught to do that by my mother.  I think she was a mild germophobe...
Anyway, I really enjoy doing it now.  I think I want to go again soon and find some cheap jeans to switch over to a skirt.   8-)

Hair  Wash day; no mousse or spray this morning as I wanted to give it a break.  Still letting it grow.

Other  It's been one of those weeks.

On Tuesday I found out that one of my former student workers had died the week before.  He was only 46, one year younger than me.  We had worked together back in the early- to mid-1990s but after he graduated I never heard from him again.  Quite a few of my former student workers keep in touch with me, in one form or another, and I was surprised when he didn't.  From the obituary I learned he had married in 2003, had a three step-children and a daughter of his own.  Apparently he just went to sleep one night and didn't wake up the next morning.  His death in and of itself is bad enough; what's worse is not being able to say goodbye or attend his funeral.   :(  That makes 2 student workers who have preceded me in death.  Strange...

Then on Wednesday my mother in law had hip replacement surgery.  She seems to be doing quite well and believes she'll be discharged from hospital today.  Hubby and I are thinking it will probably be more like tomorrow (Sat.) before she's sprung.

Quite an emotional, stressful week, I must say.  I'm looking forward to my quiet weekend routine of laundry and cleaning...anything that screams of the normal.

Hair  Nothing new, still growing.
I thought I may have found a solution to my thinning hair problem on top here:

http://beauty.hsn.com/toni-brattin-tonis-front-filler-classic_p-3345881_xp.aspx?webm_id=0&web_id=3345881&sf=bs&dept=bs0025&attr=161&ocm=BS|bs0025|161&prev=hp!sf!dept!161&ccm=BS|bs0025|161

But after reading through the reviews, I'm having second thoughts.  There are negative comments about the piece not being fine-hair friendly, which is what mine is, and other negative comments in general.  So I think I'll hang onto my $30 and just bide my time.  Like I've said before... if the thinning hair gets bad enough I'll just shave my head and wear wigs.   8-)

Kiraela (http://www.longlocks.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1177457175/495) has been on my mind a LOT lately and I don't know why...  I hadn't thought of her in months but now suddenly BAM! there she is.  I hope she's all right.  I wish I had some way of contacting her.  Hmm, I believe I'll send an email to the account she has posted here and see if it reaches her.

Hubby has been grumpy for the past few days, which is no fun.  I understand *why* he's grumpy, as he has a lot on his plate right now.  I just wish he wouldn't take it out on me.   >:(  So far I've managed not to succumb to the temptation of responding in kind but it gets more difficult every day to maintain my level of "no big deal"ness.  I'm giving him until the weekend to happy up, or mama's gonna have a little talk with her sugar daddy.   8-)

I hope talking over the weekend will help on the situation and make him aware of how it's been affecting you.  We've got a similar situation that's out of hub's hands yet the responsibility lands on his table and I understand that these things happen and I can take so much of it but if it continues I might have a talk within the next few weekends.

Kiraela responded to the email I sent and everything is fine with her.  I don't think she would mind me telling y'all that she and Paul moved back to the Baton Rouge area after a brief stay in Atlanta.  She's still growing her hair and is trying to find a job.  But in general all is well with her.   :)

Wednesday 9 September 2009 (09/09/09)   8-)

Hair  looks better today.  After washing this morning, I put on some mousse, sort of finger-combed it into place, allowed it to air dry for 30-40 minutes, then used a blow dryer.  After eating breakfast and dressing, I brushed my hair into place and sprayed it, and I have to say, it looks pretty dang good today.  Yesterday I just washed it--didn't use any product, so it was pretty flat and lifeless.  Note to self:  use the mousse!   :)

Hair  is good again today.  I repeated yesterday's steps:  wash, mousse, air dry, blow dry, brush and spray.  So I guess this will be my routine for a while.  I'm curious how my hair will look the next morning if I wear a sleep cap overnight?  Hmm, another experiment coming up...

Other  Hubby officiated at what was technically his last lodge meeting of this year.  The next meeting will be the installation of new officers on October 10, an event family members are encouraged to attend (open lodge).  All he will have to do that night is basically hand over the gavel and sit down--something he's looking forward to doing.   ;D  He'll be attending Grand Lodge in Columbia on the 20th, 21st and 22nd (arriving home on the 22nd) and while he's sort of looking forward to the trip, I know he'll be glad when it's over.

Hubby is also working on helping a friend open a gun and ammo store by October 1.  Well, hubby is the store manager, so of course he's helping.   :)  It'll be nice to be a two-income family once more.  I hope this store succeeds for more than one reason...personally, I'm tired of being poor.

Other  You know, I'm very happy Hubby has a job again, for more than the money reason.  It's giving him a sense of purpose, something to focus on other than his aches and pains (which are daily).  It also gives him a sense of pride in being able to help provide for his family again, which is important to a man's ego.

Hair  I think the Pantene Ice Shine shampoo is not doing a good job of giving my hair what it needs.  So this weekend I'll purchase more of the...what's it called?  Pantene Volume, yeah.  Even diluted, that stuff seemed to be excellent.

Other  Hubby will be busy tomorrow working a MOCHIP even at our local district fair.  http://www.mochip.org/
Then he leaves Sunday morning, along with 2 fellow lodge brothers, for Columbia to attend the Masonic Grand Lodge conference.  He'll return sometime Tuesday evening, so mamma will have to hold down the fort.   8-)

Hair  Standing in Wally World on Saturday morning, comparing Pantene's Volume shampoo with their Full and Thick shampoo.  Same ingredients, hmm... probably just a little more of one ingredient than another.  The F&T shampoo advertises right on the bottle, though, that it's for "thin or thinning" hair.  Hey, that's me!  So that's what I bought.  Was going to dilute the shampoo but realized I needed to experience it full-force to gauge whether or not it will do the job.  As usual, when trying a new product, I did a vinegar rinse first.  And so far...  I'm very pleased with the results.  I used no mousse or spray yesterday, after trying the F&T shampoo for the first time and my hair looked good, really good.  Afraid the nice results were a fluke, I opted again this morning *not* to use mousse or spray.  No blow fryer either--just combed my hair into place and allowed it to air dry.  It really looks great!  I mean, I don't *think* I'm imagining things.  I'm pretty sure I'm not suffering from wishful thinking.  Time will tell -- but I think I've found a new shampoo.  8-)

Other  Hubby left yesterday morning for his trip to grand lodge and will return sometime tomorrow evening.  I must admit...it was nice being able to read whenever I wanted, without having the tv blaring in the background.   :)

Title: Re: Trisha 2009

Hmm...I've tried Full & Thick on occasion and was never impressed with the results. I guess it makes more of a difference if you actually have thinning hair as opposed to just thin hair. :-? What I do like about it is that it's an anti-breakage formula. :)

Re:  TVs, blaring and otherwise...
I usually don't mind watching tv, I really don't.  I guess I just wish we had more quiet time of an evening that didn't involve tv.  Don't get me wrong--I don't think I'm one of those folks who can do away with their tv altogether.

Hubby made it back from Grand Lodge last night around 8:00.  He brought back some goodies, including two free ink pens for moi (yay!) and a very nice "Mrs Mason" pin.  See example here

That's a great idea, sweetie.   8-)  But it wouldn't work at my house.  We have only the one tv upstairs, that the whole fam watches.  And between my brother in law, my husband and myself, I'm usually the one who heads for bed first, around 9:00pm.  That's not to say I couldn't simply remove myself to the bedroom earlier for some quiet time.   ;)

I didn't know you had your b-i-l living with you.  We do have two tv's- one in the living room and one in the guest bedroom.  My hubby goes to bed earlier than I, so instead of reading in bed when he's trying to sleep I started reading out on the couch.  I cannot sleep with a tv close to the bed-it makes a sound and there's a static-y feeling I get that is disturbing.

Do you have a place for a cool, comfy reading chair?  That, a lamp, small table and a boom box and you'd be all set!

If I REALLY wanted, I could certainly carve out a niche for myself in the basement.  Unfortunately, it would take some major doing, involving relocating Army Son's stuff to another corner, among other things, and I'm running out of corners.   8-)  I mean it could definitely be accomplished but...   You've given me something to think about, though, sweetie, thanks.

I'm glad you're loving that shampoo.  Have you considered trying cassia?  W/o acid its a great conditioner and makes your hair feel thicker because the hair shaft swells when you apply it.  For the conditioning treatment you only have to leave it on for an hour, opposed to 3 hours if you wanted some golden color (and that's only if you prepared it with acid to release the dye).

I hope you have a great time with your family!

No, I hadn't considered cassia.  I've seen you (and others) talk about it, but wasn't sure what it did.  I may have to try that!  I'm assuming I can find it at my local health food store...?

You might be able to find cassia at your local health food store.  Make sure its pure Cassia Obovata though, and not mixed with anything else.  If you're up for an exchange, I've got a packet of powder I'll send you for something fun in return.  The packet cost me about $7.

I hope you have perfect weather for your reunion and everyone behaves themselves!  I'm bettin' there's gonna be some gooood pie or cobbler down there.  I sure do miss my grandma's Missouri cookin', particularly the cobbler and pie.  Dang it, my sweet tooth is actin' up.  Oooh, funnel cake, too.  That makes me think of Silver Dollar City.  I better go now.  Been a long time since I visited MO.

Hair  Still letting it grow; today is a no-wash, hair in a claw clip day.

Other  My brother in law told me about a funk band called Here Come the Mummies--love 'em.  Check them out, if you get a chance.

Have I mentioned that I hate standard time?  Give me DST all year long and I'd be so much happier!  This morning as I drove to work, the sunlight was hitting the side of my face and killing my eyes.  Argh.

Hair  No news.  *shrug*

Other  At one of the few other forums I post at, I was asked to post photos of the costume jewelry I inherited from my late Aunt Sylvia when she died in 2004.  I thought you guys would enjoy seeing these pics as well.  Keep in mind these are only a few of the pieces.

The large cuff bracelet and rings belonged to Sylvia's sister in law, Reba, whom I never met.  Inside the cuff of the bracelet there is an inscription reading "Merry Xmas/1946/Love Dean".

Oh wow, aren't those cool?

We have some vintage Christmas ornaments (1920's or '30's, I think) that we take out every year, handed down from when my maternal grandfather was a kid. Always fun to see them.

I kinda dig the star brooches. Do you know when they were made?

Thanks, gals!  I feel very fortunate to have my aunt's pieces (along with some from my grandmother.)  I've got so much costume jewelry I could open a boutique!  Angel, I have no idea when the star brooches were made but they are special, eh?   :)

I scored some new earrings over the weekend.  At Kohls, a card of 3 pairs of sterling silver earrings with CZ gems caught my eye.  --Regularly $35 but I had a $10 gift card plus they were on sale, so I only had to kick in $2.04.  YES!

How funny!  I went to that same Kohl's sale and bought earrings too.  My card was for 15.00 off but I still spent $9 and some change. :P

It's a short week; the university is closed Thursday and Friday, plus I'm taking Wednesday as a vacation day.   :)  Army son will be home for a couple of days, though we're not sure exactly *when*.  On Wednesday I'll do some cleaning and start doing some cooking.  --Make the cornbread for the stuffing, cook the green bean casserole, bake some pies.  *waggles eyebrows*  Good stuff, Maynerd.

The company brother in law works (er, worked) for is now closed.  IRS something-or-other.   :-?  Luckily brother in law has many years of experience and a good driving record, so finding another job shouldn't be a problem.  If he had to lose his job at least this is a better time than 3 years ago, which is when he moved in with us.  --And he'll be home for Thanksgiving, yay!   :)

Hair  Used up the last of the Pantene Thick and Full s+c and I'm glad--it didn't seem to be doing much lately.  So I bought more of the Pantene Volume s+c.

Other  Thanksgiving was fine--too much food as usual.  I'm starting to hate this holiday for just that reason.  Why does everything in our culture revolve around food, for crying out loud?!   >:(   Anyway, Army Son was home, so that was nice.  Everybody was happy and healthy and for that we were thankful.

I sometimes wonder about so much revolving around food too...and shopping.

But most cultures are that way I guess.  At least centralization of food for every holiday or celebration.  We need other customs! ;D

I'm glad you had a good holiday anyway.

Thursday 3 December 2009
Hair  Just made an appointment to get my hair cut next Wednesday.  I was toying with the idea of letting it grow all winter but I know in my heart it looks better shorter (with the thinning problem).  I'm considering having my stylist cut it as short as the original image.  I wish y'all could see the photo.  Well, in the photo, the front layer hits about an inch below the model's ear.  And the back layer hits right at her jawline.  I've been having my stylist cut it longer, at what she calls collar bone length.  I'm fine with that but for some reason, the shortness is calling my name.   :)  I don't think my family has ever seen me with hair that short...  Nope, the last time I had it that short would have been in, gosh--8th grade?  9th grade?  (just a few years ago!  LOL   ;D   )  I think I'm ready for my hair to be *that* short though.  I don't know; we'll see -- I have until 3:00pm next Wednesday to decide.   ::)

Good luck with your decision! :D  It's exciting to play with and try new things with your hair.  And the coolest thing is that no matter what we do to it, eventually it always grows back. :)

Yes, I realize I'm quoting myself; but I have to call idiot where idiot is due.   :)  My family has indeed seen me with hair that short... try 6 years ago after chemo?  Sheesh, how could I have forgotten THAT?!   ;D

Good luck with the hair cut.  If short hair feels right for you it's right.  I hope you like the result of the cut even if it takes a little while to get used to a hair cut.

I'm hating both the food part (not the food, just what it can do to one's shape) and the company or rather the way the company sometimes behaves. ::)

Hair  Thanks girls!  It is nice to forget every now and then.   :)

Hair is short (but not the shortest I've ever had it); the longest layer in the back is chin length.  I plan on taking photos this weekend and will post next week.  I know I've said this before, but my god that woman has GREAT hands.  I'd pay $20 just to have her wash my hair every now and then!!   ;D  Anyway, reaction so far has been positive.  My daughter told me I looked like a little girl!  I'm happy with it, which is all that matters.

Other  What I'm mentally gearing up for in the near future:
Next week is final exams, so my test scoring machine will get a work out.
I need to figure out what to bring for our Xmas luncheon on the 22nd... (or come up w/a good excuse not to attend!).
I need to bake a pan of brownies for my boss' Xmas present.
I need to package up the Xmas present(s) for my student worker.
I need to figure out what to give 3 of my coworkers (who always give me something).

Yep, that's me in all my splendor.   8-)  Still loving the cut.

It's final exam week here at the university, so I'm getting a work out.  Next Tuesday is our annual office Christmas luncheon but I honestly don't know if I'll attend.  I can't or won't eat 99% of the starchy, sugary food that others will most likely bring.  I could bring my own food; I've done that before and nobody has a problem with it.  But I don't know.  It's always noisy and crowded, two items on my "dislike" list.  Next Wednesday is our last working day.  The secretary has asked off for that day so Yours Truly will be filling in out front (rats).

Yesterday's Luncheon
The good:  Amazingly enough, it did not suck.
The bad :  I ended up with the wrong lid for my crock pot.
The ugly:  No one else has noticed that they have the wrong lid.
*sigh*
Surprisingly enough, this has not upset me.  I guess I've finally come to realize what's truly worth getting upset about and what's not.  --Especially what's not.   ;)  My husband is more upset about it than me.

Other
This is my last working day for the year and so I put in my usual disclaimer:  don't panic if you do not hear from me until January 4.   8-)  I'm trying to fight off a sinus infection, so I'm looking forward to resting and drinking hot tea (which I'm already sipping on today), and doing nothing.  Here's hoping that Santa treats you well and that 2010 is a great year for all of us.  *hugs* to you all   :-*

Too bad about the crockpot lid! Does it at least still work with your crockpot?

And I hope your sinus infection is clearing up. When I get a sinus infection, I like to use a nice warm saline rinse with my neti pot to feel better.

Thursday 31 December 2009

I'm braving the dial-up monster to post a last entry for the 2009 journal.  I washed the mystery crock pot lid and took it back to work on the 23rd, our last day of business for the year.  --No takers.  I left it there, in case someone realizes over break that they have the wrong lid.  It's just a smidge too small for my crock pot, otherwise I'd just use it.  I did find a replacement lid at a kitchen wares store.  Technically it's not a crock pot lid, but it'll do.

I've been snotty all during break and feel as if I've been gypped hoodwinked out of my time off.  I don't ache or feel bad; it's just a pain in the caboose having to blow my nose all the time.  I know it's just a sinus issue and not a cold; probably caused by our fluctuating weather.

So.  I was in Wal Mart the other day, picking up a few items.  I was parked at the liquid hand soap area (they were out of the "flavor" we use--imagine that), when I spot a display of Sally Hansen nail polish on an end cap.  I knew I had to buy a bottle.  Keep in mind that I haven't polished my nails in 6 or 7 years...  I don't really remember exactly when the last time was, but I know it was well before cancer.  I used to take great pride in my nails; I always kept them polished.  But cancer scared me away--all those chemicals?  Too scary for me.  Yet that day, standing in front of that display, looking at all those wonderful colors, I knew it was time.  :-)  It's Sally Hansen 'Complete Salon Manicure' with top coat, base coat and color all in one, and I love it.  I chose shade #530, Back to the Fuchsia.  It's a brilliant shade and it makes me happy; I smile every time I look at my nails.  It's only nail polish, I know--but I feel as if I've gotten something back...reclaimed a piece of myself, of the person I was before cancer.  Anyway, I love this polish.  It goes on smoothly, looks shiny (wet AND dry) and there's very little odor, which is great.  Oh, and it dries fast.  Two coats and you're done.  I'm eager to find out how long it lasts, although me sitting around doing nothing is not a good test.  :-)  Still, this week has been a nice trial run.  I'll remove the old coat this weekend and apply a new one before returning to work on Monday.

Tomorrow, kiddies, I turn 48.  I'm proud of that number...the older I get, the prouder I become.  I will never be one of those women who hides from the aging process, who spackles out her wrinkles, who dyes her hair and tries to run away from old age.  Women should embrace maturity with every fiber of their being.  Only when we stop running and turn to face our fears can we truly overcome them.

Here's hoping 2010 brings peace, joy and contentment to us all.

I totally agree, ideally.  However,I can't say for certain that I won't become one of those spakled women (as long as it looks sort of natural and not silly).

Although, how liberating it would be to not care about such things and just be fully happy, no matter what your age or how it alters your looks.  Men have it so much easier. No one expects them to look 20 years old their entire lives. :P
