Title: How long does it usually take...
Post by korinstuff on Feb 3rd, 2009 at 7:29pm
How long does it usually take for hair to adjust to being silicone-free?  Like how long after quitting 'cones will you be able to tell if it is working for you or not?  I know it's probably different from person to person, but what is a good average?

Thanks in advance.  ;D

My suggestion is to do an ACV rinse to remove any build up on your hair first of all.  You should be able to tell a difference after that.  As to whether you hair "likes" being silicone free, well you'll see it,feel it and knows if your hair is behaving differently than when you used silicone products.

Thanks for your reply!

I've only used my silicone-free conditioner once and so far I don't really see a big difference.  I've heard people say that when they stopped using silicones, their hair was crazy-looking for a couple weeks or whatever, and then it started to behave and looked great.

I was just wondering if everybody goes through such a big adjustment phase or what.  I wasn't sure how long I should wait before deciding if my hair is better off or if I should try another way.

I agree with Curlgirl about doing a vinegar rinse.  Typically, anytime you make a change in products, it takes anywhere from 2-3 weeks to see a real change.  I'm one of those with hair that likes cones.   :)

Thanks Trisha.  :)  I will probably try using my new products until the bottles are empty and then decide if I want to stick with them or try something else.

Thanks both of you.  ;D

My hair depends on cones, so if I go without them, I notice a difference immediately. One use is all it takes. But that's just me. ::)

I go off the cones for the summer, and then bring them back for the cold winter. I feel the difference within weeks!  :o

I'm cone dependent too but I've been wondering about people with our type of hair in the past; Did they always have "bad" hair? :-?

It depends on how far "in the past" you mean. But yeah, for the most part...either "bad," tangled, greasy, very short or all of the above. ::)

I used to think Asian hair was an evil creation.

I have been cone free for so many months now that I forget when I stopped using them.  The only way I can tell that it works for me is because if I get in a pinch and use a cone-shampoo or conditioner my hair is IMMEDIATELY dry and brittle like raw spaghetti (which is why I stopped using them).  So that's how I can tell.

I've tried with cones and without, and while I liked the without cones better for overall hair health, it seemed like I needed to wash my hair more often without cones-maybe because the lather wasn't stripping all my scalp's oils.  I've used both and have learned (at least for my hair) never say "never". (except for bleaching and straightening, which i won't do.)
