Title: Need advise...
Post by Isabeau on Mar 12th, 2009 at 6:45pm
Hi Ladies,

Okay here's the thing.  Don's sons' mother is dying.  Poor thing has brain cancer and had a stroke lastnight.  We know it only a matter of time and she will pass away.  Don will be going to the funeral even thought his relationship with the lady is long over ( this was 24 years ago). Thing is should I be there too?  I want to be there to comfort his son but there just might be a war as the ladies sister hates Don with a passion.  His son's mother took Chris away from him when the boy was three and would not allow him to see him.  Last year was the first time they met in 20 years.  Now there realtionship is rekindled and doing well.  So my question is...do I go?

Thanks in advance
Lisa

If it were me, and I never had a relationship with the woman, I would not attend.

You can support Don before and after the funeral, but funerals are for family and friends.  Don's attendance would be optional since he is the father of their son.  If he attends, he should be descrete and stay only for the service.

I support bikerbraid's advice.  I really think that is the safest and most considerate way to handle this.  This way you also avoid any awkwardness and if Don leaves right after the service, there's less chance of him having a confrontation with his ex-SIL.  That would be a shame for everyone else, Don and actually also for his ex-SIL.

Thank you Robin and Drear. Lastnight we spoke on this and we also agreed that I should stay away.  There still will be hell from the ladies sister. BTW Don and her never married.  I told Don that whatever happenes I just want Chris to know that I support him. :-*
