I have layers in my hair, and I was wondering if doing my own dusting and S&D is going to make my ends look really weird?  I go to the stylist regularly to have split end trims, but I'm kind of afraid of doing it myself.  Should I just get my layers cut out?  It seems like a lot of people here are anti-layering.  :P  I don't want to sacrifice a lot of my length right now.  Can I still have layered hair and have it healthy?

While everyone has an opinion about layering,I'm sure everyone would agree that hair at any length, as long as it's healthy is a must.
If you feel uncomfortable with dusting your own hair,then as long as you trust your stylist,have him or her do it!
The choice is yours when it comes down to it. ;)

What is dusting?  And S&D?  Have only been a member for a few days and can't figure these out.  Thanx

Dusting and S&D (search and destroy) are terms used when a person trims just the damaged part of a hair strand.  This is a tedious process done by sectioning the hair into small groups, looking at all the end and using a very sharp scissor to cut any splits, bursts, or knots off the hair strand.  "Dusting" comes from the trimmings when doing this - you will have a light dusting of hair that was trimmed off.

Probably long layers. I had a lot of layers put in a few months ago and my hair looks skimpier than ever :( so now I have to grow it out. I plan to have hubby carefully trim (straight across the bottom) 1/4 to 1/2 an inch off every other month to help out...
