Title: to trim or not to trim?
Post by pvtteeny on Apr 2nd, 2009 at 10:34pm
Hey all,
Long time no speak, but I'm always here at heart! So to recap, when I joined a couple of years ago, I thought I'd never get my hair to grow beyond my waist. Figured out I was washing too often, through much trial and error, settled on a routine and reached my classic length goal. Now I'm stuck again. My hair is fine and as such I don't leave it down much as it tangles when I do. I don't really want to cut my hair, but to me it's not really as nice as I would like it to be because it's fine. I don't think it's scraggly yet, the ends are even and not too horribly split. I've debated back and forth about trimming. I periodically start getting a lot of split ends, and cut off the last couple of inches, but when it gets back to where it was it starts again. Any ideas?

Hi  :)  Just my opinion, but if you're getting split ends and/or the ends look scraggly then it's time for a trim.  On hair your length, getting a trim of an inch would hardly be noticed.

If yr happy with yr length, you may want to schedule regular trims, trimming at about yr growth rate.  If yr growth averages 1/2 inch a month, you'd get a 1 inch trim every 2 months, or 1.5 inch every three months.  That way you keep the split ends from forming in the first place.  If classic is yr terminal length, this will improve the quality of those last few inches, and if it's not, it may enable you to reduce your breakage and grow a little more after a while.

Hi, I get my hair trimmed every 4 wks, when I touch up my color.  My hairdresser cuts off barely 1/8".  I have fine, wavy/curly hair and being outside on a breezy day is enough to give me split ends.  It hasn't made much of a difference in my hair growth, and I think preventative trims have helped keep my hair healthy.

You know best what works for you. :)  I've stopped dying because it gave me split ends within 3 weeks of each new dye job and there was nothing I could do to prevent it.  When my hair isn't dyed, it isn't prone to split ends.  All Fall and Winter I kept my hair under my jacket and I still do so on windy days.  I've noticed that my hair is softer on days where I've had it gathered up some way or another.  I do what I can to protect my hair.  Last time I had a trim after 6 months, I didn't really need it I was just itching to be pampered.  ;)

After all I have read here, I have been re-thinking the color, but it's so much darker than my natural, the growing out process would be awful.  I would look like a skunk, and I am not willing to give up 4 yrs of growth, nor am I willing  to go gray.  I know stripping the color would be disastrous, so I guess I am stuck between a rock and hard place.  At least, I'm not doing a double process.  I will ask my hairdresser what she thinks.  Have you got any suggestions?

You might consider reverse coloring/frosting going to your natural color, grey or otherwise. Then gradually frost more til your frosted is more than your formerly colored hair and more like your natural hair.  I have a friend who did it and it looked good all along the way to getting her natural color all grown in.
Good Luck with whatever you decide.
