Title: Houseplant Talk :)
Post by Isabelle on Aug 26th, 2009 at 4:22pm
I started this thread so we can nitter about our plants! :)  At one time I owned over 100 houseplants at once!  Talk about a jungle.

Here's a little comic to kick it all off! ::)

That's a cute comic! :D

I just threw out one of my ivy plants that was outside in an urn because it died.  I had one on each side of the door.  However, the one got too much light.  That always happens with the plants that I put out there.  I try to put out matching plants but only one ever survives because one side of the door is low light and the other is high light. :P

LD, have you considered maybe switching the plants on each side of your door once a week?  Or are they too heavy?  Not that I'm one to give advise, since I kill everything I buy!  :)

I was writing a list of the different plants I have had over the years and this is what I came up with:

African Violet
Aloe Vera
Boston Fern
Bromeliads
Chinese Evergreens
Dieffenbachia (Dumb Cane)
Goldfish Plant
Heart-Leaf Philodendron
Jade Plants
Maidenhair Fern
Miniature Rose
Norfolk Island Pine
Peace Lily
Poinsettias
Polka Dot Plant
Ponytail Palms
Prayer Plants
Shamrock Plants
Snake Plants
Spider Plants
Split Leafed Philodendron
Wandering Jew
Purple passion
Coconut palm
String of pearls
Lucky bamboo
All sorts of Cacti
Colius
A Terrarium I had for 17 years.

And god knows how many more!  ;D

Outside I have had:
Orenago
Basil
Rosemary
Lavender
Lemon balm
Rue
Catnip
Juniper Bonsai
Morning glory
Sunflowers
Tomatoes
Fava bean
Pepperment
Onions
Potatoes
Sage

I've been called the "Green Lady", "Green Witch", Green Thumbs" and "Jungle Women" LOL!!

No, it's actually a good idea. :)  I have thought about it.  They're not too heavy.  It's just that it was so hot that the sun was actually baking the plants and I would've probably had to deal with moving them and dealing with them more often than I cared to.  So it was more a thing of me being lazy. :P  Plus, I'd sometimes forget about them since I rarely go in or out through the front door anyway.

I think my best bet would be to buy a high light plant and a low light plant that look similar or just good together.

Lisa, do you have any plant tips?  Do you use plant foods or do anything extra for your plants to keep them healthy?

Omg!  I don't recognize the names of 99% on that list.  That's impressive! :)

Okay this is what I do.  I use Miracle-gro all purpose liquid houseplant food 8-7-6. I add ten drops to a half gallon watering can.  I use this everytime I water. I also use Miracle grow potting soil as well. When I repota plant I use some gravel on the bottom to provide good drainage.  I just take it off the drive way (yeah I am cheap! lol!)  I have a spray bottle and mist everyday too.  But I do not mist pants like my Jade or Snake plant.  I read up on each plant to make sure I have it in the right light and all.  I also play music for my plants.  They do best on hard rock music! LOL!!! I keep fast growers pruned back so they do not get all leggy...um that's all I can think of right now. ;)

Thanks Drear :)  I just got some new plants yesterday.  I got a Dieffenbachia (Dumb Cane)  and a Cyclamen.  The Dieff is a very small one and i hope will grow nice and big.  The Cyclamen is just so pretty...but they are a pain in the butt to grow as they need to be cold all the time.  I figure I can enjoy it for a few months before it goes dormant.

Those are some great tips, thanks! :D

I have a few plants that I'd prefer didn't grow too fast because I have them on small shelves, but the Miracle grow will be great on the others.  I use Miracle grow on my outdoor plants and flowers.

I will pass on the hard rock though.  My plants will just have to make with the new age music that I have playing most of the time. ;D

If you can think of any more tips, please let us know. :)

My next tip would be make sure when you water that the water comes out the bottom and drains, then empty the saucer.  This prevents root rot. :)

This is the next plant I want, a Staghorn Fern.

I have only ever seen one so the quest is on!  Got a cute little Hoya yesterday, I use to have a huge one that was half albino, alas I had to leave it at the old house...   I like starting my plants as babies as it cheaper and lots of fun watching them grow :)

I got to go to the plant show at the Ex and brought home a air plant :)
it was only 3 bucks!  The man had a huge basket of all different types.  The base did not come with it.  I learned a neat thing about these plants...they should be soaked in water overnight if there all curled up as this means there dehydrated.  Mine was curled up so I did just that and its all happy now! :)

Oh, Lisa... :D

I have a stupid question for you.  I have one of those cocount fiber baskets and I don't know if I'm suppose to take the plant out of the pot and put it in there or do I keep it in the pot.  I believe, that I'm supposed to take it out but not sure.

I like your air plant.  I only first heard about those a few months ago.  I saw some online grown out of hollow branches.

Here's a tip:  Today while I was vaccuming I accidentally sucked up a English ivy vine in my hose! :'(  After saving the poor thing I took a clean mostache sissors and timmed the broken vine. This prevents browning of the vine.

Oh my lord someone slap me! ;D  I got an african violet the other day!  This is one plant I totaly suck at growing.  But, I could not resist the cute pink frilly flowers. Don's father has a whole collection of them at his house. I should ask him how he does it.  I saw a orchid at No Frills for 20 bucks, poor things pot was frozen!  >:(  I wanted to get it but I did not have the cash, next time!

Title: Re: Houseplant Talk :)
Post by la diosa on Sep 18th, 2009 at 12:37pm
Yeah, why not ask him?

I replanted my fittonias because they outgrew thier little pots.

So, I got another pot from Lowes (they had them on sale) and I put them both together in the larger pot.  Then, placed them upstairs in my meditation/workout room.

I also cut up a plastic pot, the kind with the holes in the bottom.  I turned the bottom part of the pot upsidedown and placed it in the planter that way, for better drainage.

Well, I watered my African Violet for the frist time yesterday.  I watered from the bottom and crossed my fingers.  I hate fussy plants...but there so cute!  I need to get AV (african violet) plant food.  It a rainly damp day so for those who have Peace Lilies do not mist them - tip of the day! :)  http://freesmileyface.net/smiley/Nature/garderner-011.gif

I'm glad that you like me re potting job.  :)

I can't have fussy plant's, neither of my thumbs are that green. :-[

I know that this is a "house" plant thread but check this out.

I planted an assortment of green, yellow and red bell peppers but some have sprouted black.  I'm assuming (since I never planted them before) that the black ones will lighten up and turn red like my flowers sometimes do.  I think it's pretty cool though. :D

I've never seen purple peppers before, not even in the store.  However, since I ordered a mixture of seeds, I wouldn't be suprised if they threw some other kinds in there.  The same thing happened with the sunflowers that I planted in the spring.  I feel like Forrest Gump...I never know what I'm gonna git. ;D

I think my son must've misunderstood some care instructions from his grandpa.  I don't think they're both supposed to stay in direct sun.  I've moved one to a half shaded area and given it a few drops of water.  I'm going to give it 6 months to revive.  I've seen cactuses do that in the past.  I've sometimes wondered why someone wanted someone else's seemingly death cactuses and then been surprised when the cactus was "resurected".

It's the autistic oldest one and he won't accept that it's death and maybe he's right; maybe it's really poorly but not really death.  He cares a lot about plants and animals.

Time for a Tip :)

Now that the weathers turning cold and the heat is on it is time to mist your plants more often.  Also the use of a humidifer will help them (along with your hair and skin!)  This is also the time when cacti are watered less or not at all until the spring.

Ooo, I can give some tips for African violets!  --I'm actually quite good at growing them (amazingly enough!)

African violets should be kept in indirect sunlight.  They do not like to be moved, so pick a spot and leave them alone.  It doesn't matter which direction you water from  (the top or the bottom), just be sure to NOT get water on the leaves, as it causes the leaf to wither and die.  Also never touch the leaves with your hands; the natural oil on human skin causes damage to the plant.    :)

Today, I had to repot two philodendons that had outgrown their pots.  I combined them and put them together one larger one.

Currently, I'm looking for 2 plants to put in my cat's bathroom.  There are no windows in there so my search has come up with no results so far.  If any of you ladies have any advice... :)

Trisha, that is an awesome plant!  Thanks for the tips on the African Violets.  I had a plant at my desk at work a while back.  It seemed healthy, but after it lost the flowers that were on it when I bought it, it never flowered again.  It was definitely growing, and I occasionally would pinch off older leaves when they got too big for the pot.  It was in a window, but it had exterior shades over it, so while the light was bright there, it was indirect.  The leaves would grow in the direction of the window, and I would occasionally just rotate the pot so that it got light more evenly.  Eventually, I moved desks and the plant stayed in the window to continue getting light, but I forgot to water it, so it died.  :(  Do you know why it wouldn't grow new flowers?

Michelle, thanks for mentioning that you pinch off the older (and usually) dead flowers and leaves, as I'd forgotten about that.   :)   I don't have an African violet right now but mine did the same as yours--stopped blooming.  I believe they *need* African violet food in order to continue producing blooms.  There's probably an enzyme or something missing from regular potting soil that the food adds back in.  But then I think there is also potting soil designed especially for the African violets and it most likely contains that sump'n-sump'n that they crave.  Gee, now I want one!!!  LOL   ;)

La diosa,

I'm not entirely sure what you mean about your "cat's bathroom," but if it is what it sounds like, be careful about what plants you put in there.  Cats are notorious for chewing on plants (mine sure does), and many, many plants are toxic to cats and dogs.  You can find lists of toxic plants online.

You could always plant cat grass or catnip in there.  Catnip's a pretty plant, and a lot of cats love it fresh rather than dried.  I don't know about the sun requirements, though.  You might have to check on that one.

You might already know all this, but I wanted to give you a heads-up just in case.   ;)

Yesitsreal, your quite right!  Most houseplants are toxic.  It think the cat nip inder a light is a good idea.

Let's see...what is new.  I repotted the Orchid Don gave me.  I really do not know what all the fuss is about doing this.  I read about all these things you have to do - silly!  It beens weeks and its still doing well. I got some more bark (it does not live in soil)  and plan to put it in soon.  Okay this is too funny!  I was on a plant board when a women posted a pic of a plant that here grandson had left at her house when he was livinge before going to college.  She wanted to know how to care for it for him...ummmm...we told her to get rid of it as it was pot!  Poor thing!  We told her to put it in a bag and throw it in the dumpster....the damn thing was three feet tall! ;D

I have catnip growing outside and they barely notice it.  It seems to me that the odor isn't apparent unless it's picked.

OMG, that story is soooo funny, Lisa! ;D

I found this little tidbit today in Body&Soul magazine.  A 2008 study shows that hospital patients with plants in their rooms had less anxiety and lower blood pressure than patients with no greenery.
I'm certain that those facts would be true about greenery in the home too.  Having plants around just make for a more cheery environment. :)

La Diosa - Heheh!  Poor Granny!!

Yes its true!  Plants do cheer people up and lower blood pressure.  Plants like the Snake Plant also produce oxyen, I have one in the bedroom along with 10 more plants and we notice we sleep better too :)
