Title: 5 Foot cut!
Post by Enna on Feb 22nd, 2010 at 12:15pm
I cannot believe it! A woman on Rachael Ray just let them cut off 5 feet of her hair!  :(
This is actually the second time this has happened on this show but at least neither of them said they were going to donate it to LOL.

Edit at 9:40:

I went to RR website message board about this show and a number of people were saying "Why not donate to LOL?" I posted the following:

Locks of Love is a scam. They do not GIVE wigs to anyone. Most of the hair they receive is sold and not used for wigs at all. They have also been slammed by the Better Business Bureau for poor business practices. Please do NOT ever donate your hair (or encourage anyone else) to donate to Locks of Love. There are many other worthwhile charities out there.
Unfortunately, I found out about them AFTER I had donated my hair in support of my sister who was losing her hair during chemo. At that time (January 2003) they were only selling the wigs to children with alopecia who had to go through their stringent selection process and still have to pay for a wig.
NO Locks of Love - ever.

I just hope the woman truly wanted this change.  I don't know why people are fascinated by these makeovers.

I think a lot of the women just finally give in to the pressure of people telling them to cut.

That is a lot of hair to have cut at one time. I could never to that. I am going in for my 3-month trim next Thursday and any more than a half inch is too much for me.

Good for you telling them about what really goes on behind the scenes. You are right there are many other charities people can donate their locks without worry about it not going to people who can actually benefit from your kind donation. Sometimes it makes me wonder if we (long hair sites) should start our own charity where we take the hair and give to the one who need it most. I just think we could do much good with all the wonderful people on these sites.

I never watch these makeover shows. Mostly I do not watch television. I do not actually have cable, cannot afford it. Even if I could those shows are not entertainments to me. What does keep my interest are those shows which bring on the hot male dancers!  ;D

I hate makeover shows for this very reason....she may very well have wanted the cut, or thought she did at the time but when they cut someones loooong hair, I always feel they're going to regret it later. :(
Plus, I'm always a little disturbed by how utterly happy those people are with cutting off someones long, grown out in love hair! I never do understand why they're so anxious to cut someones hair off and into a pixie cut or something.....

Each time I watch one of those shows, it just makes me sick. The intensity of the audience is just... sickening.
Honestly, I think that it's a bygone energy from days when people would cheer during beheadings or hangings. Since we are more "civilized" these days, we can't cheer at beheadings or other maimings, but I think since hair will theoretically "grow back" that people feel okay being morbidly fascinated with watching that particular body part get hacked off.  >:(

And the Rachel Ray show just did it again on Friday - only it was a 34 year old guy who hadn't cut his hair since 1988. His initial cut was 2 feet and they were going to donate it to Locks of Love.  >:(

Just a thought, why don't you write into the Rachael Ray show and tell them that Locks Of Love is a scam. You're preaching to the choir here, my dear.

It's rather difficult for me personally to sympathize with people who go on national television, most especially a makeover show, expecting anything but humiliation.
In these people's cases, they usually haven't cut their hair in over 10 years and it looks godawful. If their hair was truly important to them, they would have a.) taken care of it rather than ignoring it for so many years, and b.) refused the makeover. It's all for attention and ratings - not hard to figure out.

Moreover, I think that if someone blindly donates to a charity without researching it first, they deserve to be duped. Just my two cents. ::)

Oh, I did post on her show's web site when I saw the 5foot cut show. So did a few others. But unfortunately, most people tend to plug Locks of Love and now there is even a link to their website.
When Ann Curry did the same thing on the Today show, I wrote in as well. Since she was an "investigative reporter" I suggested she look into Locks of Love but no dice.
I guess a "charity" really has to scam people very badly for someone to do anything about it. Maybe the fact that people are donating hair and not money makes it not so important or worth looking into.
Just something I guess I have to learn to ignore.

One of my students last year did an informative speech on LOL that said just what you said, and she documented her facts.

I don't understand it either.  If someone posts photos of a youtube video of long hair there's always someone who posts that they'd love to see it cut off.  Why?!

Why does it bother some people to see someone with very long hair?

If someone really wants to cut off their long hair for themselves, by all means do so.  It's your hair and your happiness that matters in the end but to pressure someone into it is "sick" for lack of better wording.

Hi melusine,

That's interesting, what age was your student? What kind of reaction did the speech get?
