Hair horror stories
Feb 8th, 2003 at 7:49pm

Do you have a hair horror story?

My horror story is actually the reason I grew my hair long the first time.  I was in high school and was growing out my pixie cut for the first time in my life.  I was still swimming competitively, so I needed a style that was easy to manage.  My mother thought a body perm would be the answer, so off we went to the salon.  The first perm did not take, so they processed it again (THE SAME DAY!) with a stronger solution.  The chemical process burned my hair so bad that it broke off at the scalp.  I ended up wearing a wig for a month until it grew out enough to be called a pixie cut again.  I was so afraid to go back to a salon after that, that it was 12 years before I stepped into a salon again.

Oh my god! What a terrible experience. One of my sister´s friends with beautiful hair to her hips went to a salon to perm her hair. The stylist did something wrong und when they rinsed out the perm she lost ALL of her hair. Think you are one of the persons who can imagine  Shocked

Yes, but the horror of losing hair of that length would be much more tramatic than my shoulder length hair at the time.  I have been very leary of chemical processes ever since, as I am sure she is.

I have a hair horror story and though it was *very* scary at the time, it was nothing as dramatic as losing all my hair to a bad chemical treatment.

When I was 19 or 20 or so, I was sitting in a bar listening to friends of mine, who were playing that night.  I was with a girlfriend and we were sitting at the end of the bar by the pool table.  I was just about to light a cigarette (another nasty habit I've since given up) when the guy who was trying to break the rack scratched and the cue ball went flying and hit the bar *hard* right next to my left leg with a huge BANG!  I turned my head quickly to see what had just come flying at me, and in doing so my hair got dragged right across the cigarette lighter and POOF!  A huge flame shot up the side of my head.  It wasn't singed, it was on FIRE!  I grabbed my hair as quickly as I could and just ran my hand down it to put the fire out.  With the motion I ended up with a handful of hair in my hand.  I went screaming into the bathroom and couldn't believe that, even with as much hair that had come out in my hand, you couldn't even tell it had been burned.  It never even occured to me that I could have been burned much worse than just my hair... all I cared about were my locks!  Priorities ;)

Not nearly as long as it is now.  Probably 4 or 5" past my shoulders.  Short enough to swing into the lighter when I turned my head.  I still get paranoid around flame!

lol! I know what you mean though!

My hair horror story was when I was about 5, my hair was hip length (it grows fast!) and I had fallen asleep. My brothers are 4 years older than me and twins and get up to a lot of mischief. Well, they decided to put gum in my hair! And when I woke up I couldn't brush it and I found gum there, since I was trying to brush it, it went all over the place and so I ran to my mother screaming! And the only way I could fix it was to cut it off  Cry, but it was only a little bit and it didn't even look uneven because my hair is so thick and it was in the underside. Actually when I was young I never took care of my hair so I got massive knots and my mother frequently had to cut them out because they were *impossible* to brush out. But thankfully my hair is growing back very healthy!  Cheesy

I had a friend in college that had that same thing happen!  Everyone around her saw the hair go up in flames - she was doused with several "drinks" including soda pop, beer, water and mixed drinks.  She was lucky that the damage was minimal as well.  However, it took quite a bit of work to get all the stickiness out of her hair that night!   ;D

WOW after reading some of your stories my bad perm  doesn't seem so bad and doesn't make a very good story.  I grew my hair out because a very bad perm burnt my hair...no real fire was involved...just a bad perm and hair cut.

I had a good friend in high school that lost some hair to a fire, also, only it was intentionally done by someone behind us on the school bus we were riding in!

My horror story is not as dramatic as the fire as I look back now, but it was then:

My hair is naturally dark brown (maybe I'll have a chance to post a picture some day  Wink ) but I have a "blonde streak" in the back.  It is just a 1" diameter spot on my head that has no pigment (it runs in the family.)  Way back when, Sun-in was used all the time to lighten your hair to appear as if you had golden highlights (it was a spray you put in before going out in the sun)   The same company came out with an actual bleaching kit that was supposed to achieve the same thing.  We decided to use that instead of waiting for the sun to do it's work.  My hair turned a strawberry blonde which i liked.  My Blonde streak appeared very light blonde.  We liked how that looked, too, so we decided to frost my hair to add more "streaks"  Back then, we used a rubber cap with holes that you pull sections of hair through with a crochet hook.  That, in itself, is painful and hard on the hair.  Once all the hair you want to frost is pulled through, you add the chemical.  When we were done and had MOST of my hair back where it belonged (some came out in the cap) my hair was ALL WHITE  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked

We went straight back to the store and got dye to match my natural color and dyed it back. All this in one day!!  If I only knew then what I know now Embarrassed  Soon after, my hair (if you could still call it hair) turned an odd shade of orange and I had to grow it out.  Whew- that was a long one Grin

Oh, the frosting thing sounds terrible!! I am so sorry, and ouch.. your poor hair! All that done in a day! I had red streaks in my hair but i dyed it back to my normal color about a year ago so I'm sure it's all natural now. Well, except for the henna, but you can't even see it since my hair is so dark!

If the red streaks were created using a permanent dye, the damage is permanent, just "covered" by the subsequent dye to return your hair to its more natural color.  Unless you have cut all that hair off, your ends would still have the processing on them.  Good conditioning and oiling can minimize the damage from the chemical processing.

An easy way to figure out if it really is all natural or if there's still some of the processed hair left, is to measure how long your hair is.  Hair grows on an average of a 1/2" a month, or 6" a year.  If the damage occured a year ago, anything longer than the 6" mark would still be processed hair.  This is of course assuming you trim your hair on occasion.  If you don't, then the ends of your hair as far as up as the length of your hair was when you processed it are not virgin hair.

If you should figure out that the ends are processed, you don't really need to worry about cutting them until they show signs of damage, which they likely will eventually.  The thing is that you want to trim them off at the *first* signs of damage so that it doesn't have the opportunity to move up the hair shaft and affect the healthier hair growth.

I used a "wash out" dye to color my slightly grey hair about 5 years ago.  I finally got the courage to follow your advice about unhealthy hair, cut it.

We cut off 8" of hair to finally get rid of the light auburn color that refused to wash out.  My hair feels wonderful and my tiny bun is the same color as the rest of my hair.

I've learned that natural looks better on me and it is so much healthier!

Are you growing your hair back out? How long was it when you cut it?

It's great that you're going all natural. When I stopped blow drying my hair and using products I felt much better about my hair and my looks, it just feels better when it's in it's normal state!

Yes, I'm regrowing it.

I was standing behind a woman with waist length hair and the last 4 or 5 inches were old dyed hair that was in very bad shape.  I felt so sorry for her hair!

Then I took a good look at mine.  That settled it.  I knew I had to cut and cut again if I was going to have healthy hair.

It was between my bra and my waist, now it is just past my shoulders. I'm also growing out my bangs, they almost reach my nose.  My hair still won't be one length so I know I'll have to do it again later, but not so drastically.

Longer hair stays out of your face, and so do short bangs.  I am using a headband for the bangs and a pony tail or bun to keep the rest of it out of my coffee.

My hair grows quickly in the spring so this was the best time to do it, but right now it is driving me crazy!

Love & Prayers,
Linda

I know how it feels to have to cut off a lot of your hair! I'm very sorry but to make you feel better, I'm having to grow my hair back down to my hips also!

I am also growing out my layers and there is a way to do it that is gradual rather than drastic. If you can find someone to cut it for you it would be more helpful than going to a hair dresser. Every few months, or whenever you need a trim, ask someone to cut a bit off *the bottom layer.* If you keep cutting the bottom layer the layers will gradually grow out until it is all one length.  Grin This is my approach and I find it better than having to cut off a lot of hair at once! Hope it helps!

I've heard that your hair grows faster once it is all one length.  Of course it just might *seem* faster because you aren't waiting years to get it that way.

My dear husband has not said a word about my shorter hair.  I think he is ignoring it until it grows long again.  LOL

If my hair grows 6" a year then it will be beautifully long again by next summer  Grin

I use a very small amount of jojoba oil (natural foods and vitamin stores carry it).  I put a drop in the palm of my hand and rub my hands together to spread it on both palms.  I then run my hands through my hair (from the shoulders down).  I try to concentrate most of the oil on the ends of my hair where it is the driest.  I do this until the oil is no longer evident on my hands.  Depending on your hair, the amount of oil will vary, but I recommend starting with very small amounts until you learn how much is necessary for your hair.

I am wearing a bun and hat the next time I go to the movies. And sitting in the very back row. Unreal!

All of the stories, I feel really grateful that mine is just plain silly. Have any of you ever rolled your hair in the automatic car window, and not known it until you almost rip your head off turning to the other side. ROFL. I hadn't thought of this for years.  Grin

I've done that as well as closing a car door an not noticing that the wind had blown my hair and it would be caught in the door frame!  I've also had my hair roll up into the seat belt mechanism.  I've learned to always secure my hair before getting into a car!

LOL!

Luckily this hasn't happened to me. I usually don't wear my hair down when I go out, because it's really hot here and more practical to wear your hair up. But my aunt who has waist length hair and always wears it down will benefit from this advice!

Teacher whose hair set on fire calls for action
Reply #34 - Jul 6th, 2003 at 9:37pm

Teacher whose hair set on fire calls for strong action

03.07.2003 -

A science teacher whose hair was set alight by a student said yesterday that the action was deliberate and strong action was needed to deter others.

Rotorua Girls' High School's Jalaja Balakrishnan was teaching in a laboratory on Wednesday last week when a student set fire to her hair with a taper.

Miss Balakrishnan did not know her hair was on fire until another student alerted her.

She escaped with just singed hair and did not receive any burns. She is back teaching.

"It could have been a lot worse," Miss Balakrishnan said.

The Year 9 student was suspended and her future at the school was to be decided by the school's board of trustees today.

Miss Balakrishnan said the student's action was deliberate and the board needed to take strong action to deter others.

But she said she felt sorry for the girl and believed there was no malice involved. "It's just a teenage prank."

Miss Balakrishnan said the student had a lot of issues, but her future at the school was a matter for the board.

She did not want to report the incident to the police.

Miss Balakrishnan, who has taught at the school for about 18 months, said she had received a lot of support from the school.

Acting principal Barbara Cumming said the incident was being treated very seriously.

On Friday Mrs Cumming and the head of the science department, Jo Ecroyd, went to every class taught by Miss Balakrishnan emphasising the seriousness of what had happened and the need to guarantee safety in a laboratory.

She declined to comment further because of the student's pending appearance before the board.

Board chairwoman Katrina Allison said police would be notified.

Post Primary Teachers Association president Phil Smith said violence of any kind against teachers and students was unacceptable.

The incident was extremely serious and "a timely reminder that schools need policies which protect teachers and students".

"Under the Health and Safety Amendment Act, this student's behaviour would be considered a hazard. Even if she returned to school, teachers would consider her a risk to teach without strong evidence she had modified her behaviour."

Amusement Park Operator Killed in Wash.

.c The Associated Press

LANGLEY, Wash. (AP) - An amusement park operator was killed Saturday when his hair got caught on a roller coaster car, pulling him up as high as 40 feet before he fell, back-first, onto a fence.

Doug McKay, 40, was spraying lubricant on the tracks of the Super Loop 2, a ride at the Island County Fair on Whidbey Island, when his long hair got caught on a car full of fairgoers, sheriff's spokeswoman Jan Smith said.

``It basically scalped him, and he fell and landed on the fence,'' Smith said.

McKay, co-owner of Paradise Amusements, based in Post Falls, Idaho, was pulled between 25 and 40 feet into the air.

Paradise Amusements had set up rides at the Island County Fair, located about 30 miles northwest of Seattle, for the past three years, Smith said.

Smith said grief counselors were on hand but that the fair continued after the incident.

Before you read this, please know that I do not normally advocate the use of violence, and only twice in my life have I felt the need to resort to it.  This was one of those times:

I went to high school in a small, rural western town. Being the new girl was a little difficult when we first moved there, but I adjusted pretty well and started making friends.  Unfortunately, it seems there is always at least one shallow, petty girl with a vicious jealous streak in every institution.

At this time, I was actively growing my hair out, and it was just past bra length.  While leaving school one day, I walked down the hall past the principal's office.  I could hear two girls behind me, and I felt something hit the back of my head.  I knew who they were, and figured out from the mean giggles just who threw it. I figured it was a paper wad, and didn't even look back, sometimes ignoring things is the best.  When I got home and ran a comb through my hair, to my horror, I found out that what they had thrown was a wad of GUM in my hair.  Luckily, I was able to use ice and get a lot of it loosened.  The rest I had to cut out.

The next morning I got to school plenty early, and met the two girls as they got to the main door.  I ignored the "side-kick" and attacked the ringleader, grabbing HER bleachy-streaked 1979 big hairdo in my left hand.  I took a good wrap or two with it and pulled her backward over my knees and held her there, throat up.  I said, "Now I'm not going to beat you up this time, but I want you to understand that I can, anytime I like.  Do you understand?"  When she said "Yes" I let her up and I marched into the vice-principal's office and told him what I had done and why.  He was the football coach and also sufficiently old school enough to approve of my tactics.

Now would somebody please tell the U.N. that sometimes the world just has to work this way? There are times when you must stand up for yourself.

Shocked LillyDale! What a horrible thing to do, putting gum in your hair!

Sometimes I feel like doing something like that to someone who has wronged me. But I find the results are always better to make the person like you, rather than be afraid of you. I have never had something THAT awful happen to me though!

It was a very good thing of you to first of all stick up for yourself, and secondly tell the vice principal about it. I hope you didn't get into much trouble!

No trouble at all!  I would think rather that most of the staff raised celebratory coffee cups in my honor in the teachers' lounge that morning.  This girl had been bad news for some time all around.

I always extend patience and a smile first thing with everyone I come in contact with.  Can't help it, I'm a friendly and (I hope) engaging person (ask Rapunzel).  But I will only be pushed so far, and had already been harassed several times by this individual and had let it go.  There are times when you cannot get someone to accept you or your presence unless you almost literally "bend the knee" to them, and I will not do that for bullies.  One cannot always teach good behavior by example, anymore than one can legislate morality.  Bullies exist, and I think the fact that our society has tolerated them has led to their proliference in recent times.  Organized bullies are called gangs, and we allowed that nonsense to get so far out of hand that they now set fashions in music and clothing.  Our young people look up to drug-pandering murderers because this behavior has been allowed for long enough to actually become acceptable.

'I can't believe I'll never have hair again'

'I can't believe I'll never have hair again'

She has not seen the extent of the damage, but 10-year-old Andrea Katzeff left knows she will never grow her own hair again.

And, after the recent failure of her second skin-graft, she is worried about what will happen next.

Andrea was scalped in a go-kart incident three months ago, when her waist-length hair got caught in the rear axle of the go-kart she was driving.

She has since undergone a number of operations to have her scalp restored and was due to go into theatre at the weekend to have her third skin graft.

'I am angry about what happened and I get upset sometimes'
Speaking to the Cape Times at the family's home in Welgemoed, she said: "I am worried about what will happen if the next skin graft doesn't take either. The last time, the skin had to be removed because of an infection. "

She is reluctant to speak about the accident and changes topics frequently, but said she remembers everything that happened on that Saturday night at the Indoor Grand Prix at Canal Walk.

"I am angry about what happened and I get upset sometimes when I think about it, but I don't hold any grudges."

She said she and the boy, a classmate who, along with his mother, took her to the Indoor Grand Prix without her parents' permission, remained good friends.

But, while Andrea puts on a brave face and tries to overcome the reality that she will never have hair again, her family knows how difficult it has been for her.

'Our lives have been turned upside down'
Andrea's mother, Natalie, said: "When she overheard the doctor telling me that she wouldn't have hair again, she was very upset. She cried and said, 'Mommy, I can't believe I'm never going to have hair again'."

Natalie said she does not want Andrea to see what her scalp really looks like and all she has seen so far are pictures taken shortly after the accident.

Natalie said doctors had shown her how to treat the wound, but when she first removed the bandages after the last unsuccessful skin graft, she was shocked.

"It was very difficult for me to do. I had never seen her scalp without the skin and now there is only a thin layer across her head. It has been a strain on the family, but we can all learn from Andrea who has been very strong throughout this. I know that as a family, we will get through this eventually. It is all about time."

Meanwhile, her father, Neill, said it was very frustrating.

"Initially, we were upbeat because we thought the skin graft would be successful, but at this stage, it is emotional and very hectic for us."

He said Andrea was happiest among her friends, but was not handling things well when she was on her own.

"She keeps asking questions about why this had to happen. She says she wants her hair back. She is very self-conscious about her wounds and chases me out of the room when her mother changes her bandages. Only her mother is allowed to see what she looks like," said Neill.

He said skin had been grafted from her buttocks and the sides of her body, which had been an "incredibly painful procedure" for her.

"Our lives have been turned upside down. It has been a nightmare, but we have to handle it," he said.

Tiger Fascinated By Woman With Big Hair

Casino Owner: Tiger Fascinated By Woman With Big Hair
Vegas TV Station Airs Detailed Account Of Events

POSTED: 10:55 a.m. CDT October 9, 2003
UPDATED: 1:29 p.m. CDT October 9, 2003

Casino owner Steve Wynn told Las Vegas television station KLAS-TV Wednesday that Montecore, the tiger who critically injured Roy Horn during a Siegfried & Roy performance last Friday, had been distracted by a woman in the audience with big hair.

Wynn hired Siegfried & Roy when he built The Mirage in 1990.

Wynn told the station that he believes Montecore was dragging Horn off stage to protect him. He said Horn was saying he wanted nothing to happen to the cat even as he was being dragged by the tiger.

Wynn told the station his version of what happened based on witness accounts. He said that as Horn was leading Montecore onto the stage, the cat became "fascinated" and distracted by a woman with a "big hairdo" who was sitting at the front of the audience.

Instead of following Horn's lead and facing forward, Wynn said, Montecore instead turned sideways toward the woman, got down on all fours, and put his 26-inch head just four inches away from the woman.

Wynn said the woman appeared delighted at the cat's attention and reached out to rub the tiger under his chin. Horn saw this, Wynn said, and reacted by jumping between Montecore and the woman in the audience.

It was then that Horn pulled on Montecore's leash, trying to get his attention, and told the cat to get up. But Wynn said Montecore would not respond.

After Horn continued to command the tiger, Wynn told the station, the tiger "gently" reached up and grabbed Horn's right arm, between the elbow and the wrist, in a "gentle, playful" way. Wynn said Horn was not injured at that point.

Wynn said Horn commanded the cat in a louder voice to release him, then hit him with his microphone to try to get him to release his grip.

According to Wynn, Horn kept pulling on Montecore's leash and fell over the tiger's paw, causing him to fall flat on his back onto the stage.

At that point, Wynn said, four stagehands rushed onto the stage and jumped on the cat -- confusing Montecore. The tiger thought he was supposed to be walking off the stage with Horn, but instead Horn was lying down in front of him.

Wynn reportedly said Montecore reacted by leaning over and picking Horn up by the neck, as if he were a tiger cub -- "a bite, not an attack."

Horn reportedly was injured by a tiger tooth that severed his artery, triggering a stroke.

Wynn said after Montecore picked Horn up, despite all the commotion, he walked off the stage "with perfect blocking," the way the act called for. Wynn said the tiger walked at his regular performance pace, exited the stage at the rehearsed spot and entered his cage, all according to routine -- except he tried to take Horn into the cage with him.

Wynn said stagehands intervened, closed the cage door on the tiger and tended to Horn.

Wynn insisted in his interview with the station that Montecore was trying to protect Horn. He said if he had been trying to hurt him, his instinctive action would have been to snap Horn's neck.

Wynn also told the station that Horn's dog was allowed into his hospital room, and Horn petted the dog.

I'm curious what kind of "big hair" would distract the tiger to that extent.  I know the audience is very close to the stage in that show, but you would think the animals would be accustomed to the audience.

Do you think she might have reminded the tiger of someone?  The tiger seemed to be calm and willing to be pet by the woman.

As for the hair out the window...done it.  I was laying down in the backseat of my dad's van and i fell asleep.   I woke up with my hair out the window and the window shut.  Needless to say, i yelled pretty loudly when i tried to raise up.

Maybe the tiger felt that the creature with the big hair was "puffing up". My cats puff up when they feel threatened. Even when it's by the other cats they live with. It takes very little to startle a cat, big or small. I remember the eighties, I saw and wore some pretty big hair!

That's an interesting theory!  I hadn't thought about the perception of the cat thinking the big hair was "puffing up".

Tiger incident

It is a very valid theory, that the cat may have seen the woman as "puffing" to present herself as larger.   This is common among cats and dogs, and a big cat certainly could have construed it as, if not a threat, then something that needed attention.

We have all been amazed for many years at the incredible training of Seigfried and Roy's animals.  Especially those of us who are cat fans - we know that usually our cats train us more easily than we train them!
The thing is, training cats is a difficult and demanding task, requiring vast amounts of time, patience and persistence.  And once a cat is trained, they do not like variance from what they have come to expect as their routine.  If there happens to be a variance from routine, anything can happen.

Anyone who works professionally with big cats knows that sooner or later there are bound to be incidents. Even those of us with mini-kitties often have the scars to bear this out (I sure do, and have always been thankful that my cats weren't any bigger than they are). Many of these are kept from the media, and sometimes, the media itself doesn't want to release information regarding animal attacks.

Examples of the fact that anything can happen with  even "well-behaved" big cats:  George Adamson, of Born Free fame was mauled several times during his career; in the end his kitties gave him The Big Chop.  Remember the old Lincoln-Mercury Cougar commercials?  The beautiful model featured in those commercials lost her modeling career after the mascot mountain lion turned on her during filming one day.  No one knows what triggered the attack, the cat was familiar with her and the commercial had been thoroughly rehearsed.  Cats can only be predicted so far.

I am just so sorry that the recent incident occured to Roy Horn.  He and his partner are obviously good people and conscientious trainers.  Thank heaven they and their stage crew were able to contain the situation before it went any further.

If anyone is interested in further reading regarding animal attacks, hie off to your public library or used bookstore and seek out a gem entitled MANEATERS, by the late Peter Hathaway Capstick.  Well-researched and masterfully told true stories of big cats, bears and other things that go "Bump!"  Guaranteed to keep you propped up in bed with your cup o'cocoa and graham crackers well into the wee hours!  BRRRRRR!

No arguments from me regarding big cats.  As they say, you can take the animal out of the wild, but you can't take the wild out of the animal.  It is a shame that Roy was injured so badly, and on stage.  (I can't imagine the nightmares some of the audience must be suffering).  But is something good can come out of it, maybe the public is now more aware of the dangers of big cats, and fewer people will try to make them pets.

When I moved here to Arkansas a few years ago, my hair was down to my waist.  I didn't know any hair stylists.  The move was very stressful.  I didn't know anybody, I was trying to find a job and I guess I was feeling kind of insecure.  To cheer myself up I went into a hair salon and asked the woman for a trim, just an inch to cut off the split ends and even out the bottom of my hair.  I was very careful to tell her to cut JUST AN INCH.  Before I realized what happened, the stylist started cutting off a foot of my hair!    Cry   Before I knew it, I glanced down and saw a pile of hair on the floor!  I asked her what she was doing, and she said, "You had a lot of split ends."  She was very gruff and intimidating.  She then had the nerve to charge me for a full hair cut instead of the price of a trim.  I was in such shock that I paid her and left.   I should have been really angry at her, but I was in shock, and I was also kind of intimidated by her.  I began feeling very depressed, and I realized after awhile that a lot of the depression was the anger that I held in at the hair stylist.  I felt really violated somehow.  I probably would have felt much better if I had just freaked out and screamed at her.  After that, I wouldn't go to a hair stylist for a long time.  I got to know a hair stylist at my church for a long time before I let her trim my bangs.

Oh what a nightmare.  I would never have paid her and I would have screamed my way up to management.  Another great example of why you want to be sure you are dealing with a long hair specialist that completely understands your goals whenever you go to a salon.

I hope you've fully recovered from the ordeal!

Eowyn;
I'm so sorry to hear of your experience at the salon.  It is amazing how some hairdressers feel empowered to do whatever they want to do, even when it is not what was requested.  Thank goodness hair does grow back!

And by the way.....WELCOME!

Thank you for all your kind words.  I wish I was much more assertive when it came to hair stylists.  I haven't had a trim in at least a year!  Even my present hair stylist, who I like very much, keeps trying to get me to let her whack my hair off.  She can't see any split ends in my hair (I take pretty good care of it) but she still gets that crazed gleam in her eye.  My mother recently told me that she ordered me this thing called the "split-ender" for Christmas, which is only supposed to trim 1/8 inch off the bottom of your hair.  I'm going to test it on my nephew first (he's only 3 so he doesn't care what his hair looks like!) and maybe my sister, too, before it ever touches my hair.  Grin  I will write a review for you after I try it.

I saw the infomercial on those a couple weeks ago and I have to admit that even I, the skeptic of all time, am intrigued by the device.  I'll be looking forward to your review!  Sure will beat having to do dusting if it works as well as they say it does.

I've also seen ads for the device.  It looks to me like it would take a little bit off all the ends, even those that don't need to be trimmed.  I guess I am just a skeptic.  I look forward to haring about your experience.

I could say that ANY of my haircuts as a boy were horror experiences. I always found it skin-crawlingly uncomfortable and degrading. Now I don't have to do it anymore and that's great.

The worst one had to be when I was 12 years old. This was the 70s so short back& sides were definitely out, even so my hair had got to about shoulder length. We'd moved house; before I'd had the misfortune (so I thought) to have a hairdresser for a neighbour. Now we lived in a strange small village where the hairdresser was rarely open after I got back from school. I thought it was great to have such long hair and was really proud of it. Think of the Rolling Stones circa 1969. I really didn't give a shit about what teachers at school said, or my grandparents, because it looked well cool.

The pressure was on though and I knew I'd have to submit sooner or later. What I never imagined was that my parents would assault me on Christmas Eve, of all days, and cut it off. They knew it was my least favourite thing of all. I thought they were making some kind of bad joke when they said: "Time for your Christmas present - a crewcut!"

I knew it was no joke when my dad barred the way to the back door. My mum had hold of my hair in both hands and was trying to wrench it out of my neck. I wriggled free and tried to get past my dad when I was suddenly reeling backwards with blackness before my eyes - he must have hit me in the face. Hands were back hold of my hair.  I was being shaken around like a rag doll and hit at the same time. I didn't know who was doing what. I was screaming. My sister was screaming for them to stop.

I wasn't a big or strong child, so it stopped when I did. I couldn't beat them. My dad cut it into a really awful lopsided bowl shape, in deathly silence. I was going to be a laughing stock for months with that.
I was ordered up to the bath to "wash that shit".

When they realised what they'd done, I heard my mum asking my dad if they'd done the right thing and he just sneered at her. I couldn't have imagined anything worse. I loved Christmas as much as any child and I couldn't understand why they had done something with such real hate. Only my sister stopped me from drowning myself in the bath.

Nine months later my mum walked out. I now know how bad their marriage had been for some time and I think they took out their frustration on me, easy target.

Why go into all this? Probably because it's nearly Xmas, which has never felt the same again.
As for trying to make me "presentable".... I haven't had a haircut since I left school. I have dreads to my waist and it's not been a barrier to becoming a personal and professional success in my 30s.
I'll still never forget what they did.

Merry Xmas to you all, be cool, be sweet.
Embarrassed

Oh my, what a story, I literally have tears in my eyes.  What a horrible memory that is to live with.  You might want to consider though, that the experience may have contributed a great deal to your mother leaving that horrible man, which is an *excellent* thing.  Lord knows what might have happend if she hadn't.  Perhaps you unwittingly gave your mother the greatest Christmas present of all.

It's amazing how much our hair means to us and how we view it as adults is so affected by our experiences with it as children.  It sounds like both you and I love our long hair in large part because of being forced to wear it short against our wishes when we were kids.

Dear all,
many apologies for killing your thread with my horror story.
Thankfully it's now well into the new year so it ain't on my mind.
It taught me a few lessons about people though.
Keep smiling in the quest to avoid scissor-wielding maniacs!

Whew, my sympathy goes out to each and every one of you with a hair horror story, I've been sitting reading them for a while and my bf just commented on the glazed yet terrified look on my face!

My story can't really compete but it cracks me up when I think back. When I was in my early teens, I had mid-back length hair along with extremely thick bangs. I hated those bangs, and it hadn't occurred to me that I could just grow them out, so I took matters into my own hands. I decided to thin my bangs by cutting off the upper section of them. This created thinner bangs, but also an interesting section of vertical, spiky hair on top of my head.  Shocked

I still refuse to have bangs ever again!

Kate;
Growing out bangs must be the most difficult part of growing out hair.  I'm glad I figured it out real quick when growing out my pixie that I did not want to have those bangs to deal with later.

That is terrible, I often have nightmares about that happening. That is the whole reason I stopped puting chemicals in my hair I am afraid if I put a relaxer in I will go to wash it out and all my hair will come out.  Cry

When I was 16 my hair was about midway down my back. I was getting ready to go on a cruise to the bahamas so I wanted a hair style that would look nice for the trip. I had my aunt do it and she sugested that I get extentions to make it look better or something and so I just agreed cause I figured she knew what she was talking about. Well any I go on the cruise and every time I would get my hair wet the extensions would begin to slide out. I kept having to rebraid them and finally i just said o well if they fall out they just do. I was on my way out of my room this one time and as I was walking this little boy came up and handed me a piece of my hair, I was so embarressed. This also happened while I was on deck and the wind was blowing, an extension just blew out of my head across the deck and into the ocean. Finnally when I got home I went to take them out and discover big clumps of my hair are coming out. Come to find out I didnt wash all the salt out of my hair and it was braking  my hair off. My hair was all uneven and short I have never gone in the ocean since then I am very afraid  Cry

I have many hair horror stories. I have just had a terrible time with my hair all my life. When I was about 4 or 5 my hair was about mid back, and I always wore two pigtails. The teacher at the day care I went to liked to comb my hair, she did it everyday. I ended up getting ringworm and all the hair in the top of my head fell out I was almost bald. I went to the doctor and they gave me this shampoo that changed the grade of my hair it became more thick and course I was so upset. I am very careful about who messes with my hair nowadays.

I don't have a horror story of my own, but I have one that happened to my sister.
When she was young, she had hair about to the bottoms of her shoulder blades. She didn't know how to properly take care of her hair, so she only brushed the front parts. This, surprisingly, resulted in a knot a little bigger than your fist! My mom tried getting it out and couldn't do it, so she took her to a salon. The girl there tried for a while and then just cut the knot off and worked from there. The result was a bowl type of cut that was a little longer than ear lobe length in the front and got shorter in the back!  Shocked It was awful.
The worst part was my sister has a grey spot in the back of her head. You really can't see it, but with short hair it's very obvious! A 10 year old girl with a grey spot. Poor girl. It took quite a while for her to grow it back to a normal length.

So there I am, minding my own business in my own backyard.  Reading the Sunday paper and this yellow jacket keeps buzzing my hair!! Shocked Shocked
Could be the same one that tried to get in my hair yesterday morning by the front door.  Very persistent and scary.  Didn't get stuck, even with me swatting at it to get it away. (dumb thing to do, but I was in a panic mode
Anyone ever get a yellow jacket or bee in your hair?

We did have a yellow jacket nest under the siding by the front door exterminated last week. Angry  I think the yellow jacket is homeless -- but I'm not feeling sorry for it!

I've never had one so persistent about my hair.  I wonder if it is the jojoba oil or something.  I didn't have anything sweet with me either time.

Jojoba oil typically has no real scent of its own, only the scent of what might have been added to it.

Yellow jackets buzzing you can be scarey.  Hope yours finds a new home, far, far away.

Yep. I was talking to a friend on the phone outside, and a bee came right over, hovered around for a few minutes, and went right into my hair. So, trying to stay cool and not freak out my friend I started shaking my hair, turning  in circles and generally making myself look insane to any neighbors watching. I reach up to try and feel to see if it was still there, and squish it. Now I had bug guts in my hair, and it's safe to say that grossed me out. In a fit of panic I started to run down the street to a buddy's house(phone still in one hand and barefoot to boot) to have him dig the bee bits out for me.
Wasn't fun and I felt like an idiot afterwords.

I feel for you all getting bugs in your hair, especially icky bug juices, but what really stands out about your story, Bardic Love, is that you were barefoot to boot! Grin

That is an interesting concept...Barefeet and long hair. I personally cannot stand to wear socks. I always tell people I am "anti-sock". My thoughts come down to this, I pay a lot for my pedicures...I want to show off my pretty toes. lol  Smiley

Ya know, I wondered about that meself because since I started growing my hair long, I've been more and more comfortable in bare feet than in any shoes....mmmm..sounds like survey to me. Smiley ???

I too, am anti-sock. In fact I'm anti-anything-that-covers-my-toes. Around the house I'm barefoot, in public I wear sandals or flipflops. Anything else is just uncomfortable.

BUT, I am not at my target length yet.  And just this summer I got a pair of split-toe Nike Air Rifts (they look like tabi shoes.)  So!  That theory may yet be correct.

I love going barefooted (if that's a word) All through school (I was homeschooled) I didn't wear shoes very often and only wore socks when my feet got cold.
But, since I've come to college, I've had to "conform" to the socks/shoes idea. Embarrassed I still take them off whenever I can.

Yikes! mine are far more tame than that but extremely comfortable for whose trips into a store.

The only reason they are in my car because I prefer driving barefoot as well! Nothing worse then getting out to the car to discover that I've no shoes because I removed them the last time I drove.

And why the picture? If *some* people can show socks, I can show flip-flops.  Grin

Pretty cool looking flip flops you got there.  I'm envious of those of you who can fun around barefoot.  I used to be shoeless all the time when I was younger and wish I could do that again.

BL, I think you'll find the best selection of flipflops at a beach wear store.  Here are a couple of links:

Pacific Sunwear
http://shop.pacsun.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=10001&c...

Becker Surf
http://beckersurf.com/Products.asp?product_subgroup_id=43

I've ordered from both and they have good service.

I have one pair of platform sandals I use for washing dishes because I'm too short.  If I don't have the height I get achy elbows!   Smiley

Don't I wish! Smiley Nope, pooch decided it was time to go outside and woke me up. So it was either go back to bed for 20 or so minutes or stay up. Besides, my neck of the woods while at a different latitude is almost the same longitude.

I most definitely have a hair horror story!! It goes a little something like this...

During the week between my wedding and honeymoon, I decided to dye my waist-length light brown hair and dye it black.

I have coveted long, flowing raven hair from birth, and had dyed it black many times before this instance. So I went to the store to pick up a box of hair colour. But....something was different this time! *dun dun dunnnn.....*

The store that I went to was fresh out of the Level 1 semi-permanent that I usually bought.

So, after walking around a bit, thinking it over, I decided to try the Level 2 demi-permanent black made by the same company. I figured, what would be the harm? It would only last a few weeks longer than the Level 1.....right??

So I rushed home and did what I'd set out to do. Ohhh I loved my new raven tresses at first, and the colour lasted through and well past my honeymoon. Even when the light brown roots showed through, I covered them with yet another dose of Level 2 demi-permanent. This one having a slight indigo tint to it, when added on top of the previous black, gave it absolutely gorgeous dimension!!

But.....the hairdye high was rather short-lived. In the weeks that followed, the new colour began to feel very unnatural to me (and I was beginning to notice how unnatural it looked). The stark indigo-black did not at all compliment my natural Celtic colouring, and I longed to see the fiery embers of red and gold in my own hair once again.

But the Level 2 did not wash out after a month. Nor after 2 months. Nor 3. I came to realize that due to the vast difference between my natural light auburn and this drastic black, that the colour had actually taken permanently!

The roots had surfaced yet again, and this time I did nothing. I refused to keep dying them to match (even with a Level 1) as they grew out. I also refused to go to a salon to have them strip the colour out, and then dye the length to match my natural colour. I had been sufficiently traumatized by unnatural chemical processes, and refused to do it ever again.

So one day, in a fit of desperation and hopelessness, I gathered my long, black hair into a ponytail....and handed my husband (of the time) a pair of scissors. That was a nightmare in itself, and I had to rush to my sister's house so she could even out the horrible hack-job that he had done!  Angry

And that was the end of my longhair days as I knew them. Oh I ran around for 2 years with 2-tone hair. Light brown on top and black on the bottom. That was a really good look!  Undecided

But it forced me to start over from scratch, and I vowed to take care of my new growth from the first. Once my "roots" reached 6 inches in length, I took up little strands of hair, one at a time, and simply cut the black off.

I had to learn the hard way about the negative effects of chemical processing. But to this day, my colour has been au natural and I have worked very hard to give it the best treatment possible.  Smiley

Wow, I'm kind of surprised that the level 2 dye did that to your hair. I thought that type of dye was supposed to wash almost completely out.

I know what you mean about 2 tone hair looking weird; I've had that for the past year. I don't wear my hair loose very much these days so at this point I don't think I care if my hair color  looks funny. Happy

It's true, level 2 dyes can stain the hair.  Some people it does wash out but not eveyone.  If the hair is pores and damaged it will stick even more.   The only thing I know washes out is level 1's like Loving Care.

This is more of a funny story, not so much a horror story...which is good, I guess!  My husband and I were spring cleaning our kitchen, you know, the dreaded 'let's move the fridge, the stove, and anything else really, really heavy that we can find' ordeal.  Well, he has the vacuum running while he gets down on his hands & knees to see under the stove.  He presses his face against the floor, and his mid-back length hair fans out across the floor- I have my back turned doing dishes, mind you.  I hear him saying something, it was hard to hear over the vacuum and water running, I hear him again-a bit more frantic this time, he then begins banging on the floor to get my attention.  I couldn't figure out what his fuss was...I found out shortly, though.  His hair had gotten sucked up the vacuum cleaner and wound around the brush- I am so terrible in situations like this- he is so angry and yelling, and I couldn't help but laugh- very, very hard.  He did NOT delight in my humor.  We were able to remove his head from the great beast quite easily, tears of laughter in my eyes the entire time, him cursing, what a scene!  I suppose if it had been me I wouldn't have been laughing so hard, but it wasn't...so I was...god help me!  Grin  He also has gotten his hair stuck in an ab-roller- he needs some practice if he's going to walk around with long hair!

Interesting. When I tried a "normal" level 2 dye several years ago, I couldn't even see it on my hair and when dye residue stopped showing up when I washed my hair, I assumed all of it had gone away.

Maggie, maybe he needs some LL hairsticks for Christmas Wink

Angel Spun, I have read that red hair and hair with red in it will react oddly to dyes.  And I unfortunately know this from personal experience.  I tried to lighten my hair when I was in my 20s and it came out "splotchy"  also my hair will take dark colors very easily but refuse to let go of the color.

I read so many awful gum stories I wanted to share this with everyone who has/may have one.  Maybe this will help avert a future disaster.

My brother used to get gum in his hair practically daily.  My mother used peanut butter to get the gum out, and it always worked.  No cutting.  She used it on me when my hair was long enough to sit on and my brother put gum into it.  I smelled like peanut butter, but no gum.  She always said it was the oil that removed the gum, so maybe just peanut oil or whatever kind you usually use on your hair would work as well.

Also,  I  noticed some people discussing the 'split ender.'  I bought one and loved it.  I actually opened up the little hair compartment and checked every last little hair in there, and they were all just the split ends.  It did not change my length at all or cut off non-split ends.

It was a much faster way to get all the split ends.  The only problem with it was that it is very cheaply made. My thick, wavy hair made short work of it and I broke it the fourth or fifth time I used it.  Sad

I noticed a difference the first time I used it.  My hair was much sleeker, since the splits werent trying to fly all around.  If you buy one, and I will get another, I just recommend that you follow the directions and use a very small section of hair at each pass.  It will take a while if your hair is really long or thick, but the mechanism that holds the hair is just thin plastic and can't take a large section of hair.

Hope someone finds that helpful. Smiley

Sasha--Peanut butter is what my mom used too, that and egg I think.  I never suffered through it, but (and it was accidental from what I remember) I put a tube of tubble bubble in sisters waist length hair when I was 5.  She didn't have to cut her hair, but since my mom and aunt worked on her hair while I got to go swimming with my dad, she hoped I drowned.  I still don't think she's forgiving me for it.

LOL maggie!!!! OMG that's hilarious. Hope your hubby (and his hair) are ok. That rather sounds like something that would've happened to my former husband. *snicker* Oy vey...

Lisabelle: Loving Care was what I used to use in high school. It always washed out within a fortnight. The level 2 which ruined my hair was Natural Instincts.

Chilipepper: That is too weird! I definitely have a good deal of red in my hair (every strand has a red tint, actually). I have never heard that before. lol I wish I could have known that at the time!!

*shrug* I have learned a lot since the disaster. Hindsight and all...

Yes, after all of his incidents, he still has his long hair!  I cringe at the way he cares for it...VO5, Aquanet, ripping thru it while it's wet to try to comb it, twirling it, ripping knots out....all that and it looks fine.  Go figure! Tongue

Oh this is terrible (terribly funny, that is) he'd be spittin' nickels if he knew he was the topic of convo. here!  But, oh yes, there was an ab-roller incident as well (...she types while laughing...), here goes:

I think most of us should be familiar with what an ab roller looks like, right?  You lay on your back, head resting on the cushion, hands above you on the bar.  OK well, he gets into position (hair once again not pulled back BTW), he lays back, rests his head...but not with his hair underneath him and against the headrest, but, he flings it out so that it is not under his head, but fanned out on the floor.  (He must like fanning his hair!) So he does his first sit up, lifting his head and his knees, me watching all-the-while, and he comes back down.  He proceeds to <attempt> to do another crunch...but wait, he can't lift his head...he's stuck!  His hair went from being fanned out behind him, to being underneath the head-rest- actually between the rest and the floor and under his back.  So now he can't raise his head, he can't move the roller, he can't do anything except lie there asking for help!  Well, he began laughing, then I started laughing (of course!), soon we're both weak with laughter and tears in our eyes...and between whimpers he's asking for help, but I cannot yet catch my breath enough to get up and help him.  Our laughing awakens the "almighty" (...or lazy) sleeping dog, and she moseys over to see whats up, she walks over and affectionately licks his face, and again, and again, and again....and there's nothing he could do!  He just lay there totally helpless, pup kissing away, crying out "help, stop it..megan, help..stop licking...MEGAN!"   Oh, how priceless!  It's the small things in life...

Yes, I did eventually help him out, I'm not that evil!

...So, that's the "ab-roller incident", let that be a lesson to us all to carefully secure our hair in the proper manner before attempting the use of this contraption (or any contraption, for that matter)!  He truly is a pioneer!

Hehehe, what haven't all of you been through...  Shocked
Still not old enough to have been having toooo many hair traumas, I wasn't to happy when my hair stuck in one of those nasty styling brushes. My (eeevil) curiousity made me go "oooOOOooo, what's this?" on such a brush, and the bloody thing stuck in my hair! My hair wasn't as long as now nor did I care as much, but it stinged quite  bit when I had to cut of all that was stuck... At the roots!!!  Cry

Have a lovely day!

When I was in high school and right out of high school, I used to dye my hair jet black (I was a heavy metal chick  Grin). When I got to be around 20, I was sick of the Josie and the Pussycats look, so I attempted to bleach out the black hair dye. To my surprise (horror), my roots turned a very light orange, and the rest of my hair was still jet black. I had to grow it out some and cut it off into a short bob.

The stupid part was a few years later, I dyed it black again! Roll Eyes

Re: Black hair dye
When i was younger i dyed my bra length brown hair black, permenant black (i was a punk lol not metal) when i got sick of it i let it grow out for a bit, but then my graduation came up, and it had only grown out 4 inches, so my hairdresser put foiles thru my hair, the top being black and the bottom of them brown, it looked like i had black hair with brown highlights. maybe next time you could try this too.

i have two bad hair stories, but i'll end on the good one.

first, last weekend i went to get my bra length hair trimed, and coloured, brown with red highlights. i was very precise when i told the stylist what i wanted. first thing she tried to do was put big chunks of red thru my hair!
i told her i wanted 4 inches of layering, cos i hate it too layered, my bangs trimmed and the colour done. first she burnt my head with the hair dryer, then she layered my beautiful hair to such a point that there is 8 inches between where the top layer ends and the bottom of my hair is, she cut my bangs really short and took a good 3 inches of my length, the red has faded (its been 5 days, and 2 washes) so its a copper colour, and i need to blow dry my hair to give it body, because she has left me with a third of the hair i had before. i came home and cried my eyes out, and my room mate took me back down and demanded my money back. she only gave me half what i paid.

i hate it, and i found this site whilst looking for tips on how to help it grow out faster,
your stories have helped my see i'm not alone, and that most stylist are scissor whielding maniacs, who only want to hack off our locks!!!

and for the nice story

when i was about 10 i got one of those round brushes caught in my waist length hair. it got rolled in up to my shoulder and i couldn't get it out, my mum tried but it was too knoted, she was about to take me to get it cut out when my brother walked in (he was 16) with his pocket knife.
he sat behind me and snapped the prush in half, with his bare hands, and then started cutting of the bristles of the brush with his knife. he sat there for 3 hours cuting and snapping the brush into 1inch pieces and untangling it.
when he was done, i had only lost an inch of length. it is the most patient thing i have ever seen him done, and till this day i am very grateful.

Thanks for ur stories, i feel less alone in my bad haircut misery!

Hi Coin,
Welcome aboard!  That story about your brother is truly a good one! Smiley  As for the other stories of the hairdressers who  got insane with those scissors........it's no wonder so many of us are always so particular about who touches our hair and we are even more picky about who is going to trim or cut!  Why is it so hard to find someone who will just trim when we say just trim or listen to the instructions about how we want our hair done??? Roll Eyes  Maybe the teachers and instuctors in "Beauty School" will give a class on paying attention to the client and what the client is saying.........

What a wonderful brother you have.  I don't know many people who would have had that patience.  I know what a nightmare that is when you get a brush tangled in your hair.  I've had it happen myself and have since sworn off brushes.  Cool

After reading some of these horror stories, i feel fortunate that my bad haircut is all that im going through.

I had someone thin my hair. It was already thin. I wanted it layered. My hairdresser took a razor comb and thinned my hair instead. I dont know what they were thinking--maybe a quick an easy way to "layer".

She just brushed it through my baby fine hair and in moments my hair was ruined and thinner than ever before. It was awful and I still have emotional distress from it.

I'm currently trying to grow it all to one length but this is going to take a long time. Its been over a year and my hair is still only above my shoulders and a million  different lengths.   Sad

I just want more than anything for my hair to grow to one length and at least be healthy. Undecided  I'm just trying to be patient.

My wife and I went to great clips and I was going to get a hair cut and my wife was planning to get just a trim.

I got done first and then my wife was done not too long after.

But, the look on her face was not good Huh

The lady doing the trim said my wife had lots of split ends so 7" were cut off Angry  She went from about waist length to 7" shorter Cry
I was not too happy but I told my wife that her hair would eventually grow back and it has Cool

That was about five years ago or more.  And we do not plan to go there ever again.

I don't have a hair trauma story but I do have a barefoot story.  I used to love going barefoot but I can't do it much anymore because the lab I go to a lot you do NOT want to be walking around in barefoot (I build robots there, which is why I'm there a lot)

ANYWAYS, I had to run a timed mile at the beginning of the school year for Fitness Testing.  At this time I didn't have proper running shoes that kept my ankles from being sprained (they turn inwards when I run so I've sprained on 7 times and the other 5 times) so I decided to run it barefoot.  This was on a very hot day on one of those funny rubber tracks, and it was so hot I got huge (1-2 inches in diameter) blisters on the bottoms of my feet.  I was lucky it was Friday so I could go home and sit around all weekend. The funny thing was that I got my best time ever because by the 3rd lap it hurt so much I just wanted to finish!
