Hair color causes fight
By: Jessica Schneider

School's out, but the fight for Danielle Intelisano is just beginning. Her fluorescent locks have sparked controversy in Gloversville. The hair dye that took just minutes to apply got her booted from the 8th grade graduation ceremony.

Danielle Intelisano said, "It's not like I did this to cause trouble or anything, cause I didn't know."

But that excuse wasn't good enough for the middle school's vice principal. When he saw Intelisano prepping for the commencement on June 24, he called her and her family right into his office to tell them such a vibrant hair style would not be allowed.

Frank Intelisano, Danielle's Father, said, "According to him it was going to create mayhem and chaos in the audience, which is just absurd. I've never heard of such a thing."

Superintendent Dan Connor and Vice Principal James Flint both chose not to speak with Capital News 9, but the middle school's code of conduct does reference "hair style and color" as part of its dress code, noting it must be appropriate and must not interfere with the learning process.

Danielle said, "We weren't learning. It was a graduation. No one was learning anything."

But middle school parent Victoria Yusko said she's not too surprised. She thinks the dress code parameters are much too strict. She said kids need the freedom to be themselves.

Yusko said, "It's not like she had spikes coming out of her head. She was just expressing her originality. In today's society, children are subjected to fashion, and I really don't think it was a big deal. I think they went overboard."

In the meantime, the Intelisano family has hired a lawyer. They're asking for a formal apology from the school district, and they plan on suing if their demands aren't met.

Vanessa Olivarez is scheduled to perform at the same school that kicked Danielle Intelisano out of graduation for her pink hair...what's up with that?!  The front page of the local paper says that Vanessa  is " bringing her funky-colored hair to the stage of Gloversville Middle School!!"  I don't know these girls or any of their family but how is it any different.... from what I understand Danielle is a good student that was due to get an award that evening in Social Studies...Vanessa has posed naked!!!!  Guess it's a case of the usual "it's who you know" that counts!

That is so discriminatory!  If what you say is true, I think Danielle has grounds for a lawsuit or at least a public appology.  Shocked

something similar happened here in england...though not exactly as the girl was allowed to have her bright pink hair (cool in my opinion  Grin ) for the school photo...but when she got her copy of it...she found that the school had used a computer to make her hair brown in the photo!! without telling her, may i add! it makes me angry when people do such things....like pink hair in a photo would cause outrage!?

I remember.. back in the day, a few from my old high school had "unconventional" hair. Boys with green "Static X" spikes were popular and well-liked while their female counterparts were often teased or given strange looks. Now I attend a Jesuit university with roughly 2-4 people on campus having strange hair--none of them female. Odd how that goes.
